Four-horse race as NWFL Premiership Super Six ends today

Nasarawa Amazons, Edo Queens, Bayelsa Queens and Remo Stars Ladies all have realistic chances of lifting the women’s league title as the NWFL Premiership Super Six  climaxes today in Ikenne, writes  TUNDE LIADI

Curtain will fall on the 2024-25 NWFL Premiership Super Six with three games to decide who will be the outgoing season’s champions.

Reigning champions, Edo Queens, started the Super Six with a 1-0 loss to Remo Stars Ladies but have kicked on from that unfortunate result to record two wins and a draw and are second with seven points ahead of the final day of hostilities today where they will confront leaders, Nasarawa Amazons who have eight points.

Edo Queens need an outright win and praying that Bayelsa Queens or Remo Stars Ladies do not surpass their result in case both teams win their games too. Both teams are also on seven points.

Nasarawa Amazons’  victory over Edo Queens will nullify results from other venues as they will move to 11 points and unattainable by any of the chasing packs who can only finish with 10 points.

In another tie, 2022 Champions, Bayelsa Queens could lift the league title for the second time in the past three seasons if they beat Naija Ratels by wide margins and Nasarawa Amazons are unable to beat Edo Queens.

It looks like a possibility with Naija Ratels unable to pick a point yet after four games losing all four games to Nasarawa Amazons, Remo Stars Ladies, Edo Queens and Rivers Angels.

Bayelsa Queens were in vantage position after they dislodged Remo Stars Ladies 2-0 in the third game but they were given reality check when Edo Queens dazed them 1-0 through Emem Essien’s goal on Thursday.

Remo Stars Ladies will face Rivers Angels in the last game hoping to be first time lucky winner of the title as they currently have seven points just like Edo Queens and Bayelsa Queens but are fourth on the log because of inferior goals difference.

The host of the Super Six will become maiden champions if they beat Rivers Angels by more than three goals and results from the remaining two centres favour them.

It will be a frenetic end to the NWFL Premiership Super Six and with the game to be played simultaneously, purists of women’s football will have a lot to reflect on for the entire 90 minutes across the three centres until the final blast of the referees’ whistle.

Three teams remain unbeaten heading into  Matchday 11. They are Edo Queens, Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels but these teams face serious battle to keep their unbeaten record with key fixtures across both groups.

In Group A, Ikenne will be literally being on fire when Remo Stars Ladies and Edo Queens square off in a high-stakes top-of-the-table clash with Super Six implications. This will be their fourth meeting in the topflight, with both sides eyeing a firm grip on playoff qualification.

Remo Stars, second on the log, lost their unbeaten streak to Nasarawa Amazons in their penultimate game 1-0 in Lafia but boast a perfect home record (5/5) this season.

Edo Queens remain the only unbeaten side in Group A with 26 points and are eager to extend their slender one-point lead. Their last meeting ended 1-1 in Benin, following home wins by each side last season.

In another Group A duel, Dannaz Ladies and Ekiti Queens head into this tie in dire need of a turnaround having suffered loss of form in their recent games. Dannaz Ladies are winless in their last eight (D3, L5), while Ekiti Queens have suffered five straight defeats.

The Lagos-based Dannaz have just one home win this term, while the Queens from Ekiti have lost all five of their away fixtures.

Ekiti claimed a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture in Ado Ekiti and hope for a season double that will boost their survival hope too.

Abia Angels look to tighten their grip on a playoff spot as they welcome struggling Heartland Queens in an Oriental derby in Umuahia in a Group A fixture.

The Umuahia-based side have won four of five at home, with their only loss coming against leaders Edo Queens.

Heartland Queens, yet to earn a point on the road, are desperate to avoid a sixth straight away defeat.

Interestingly, they completed a double over Abia Angels last season.

In Lagos, FC Robo Queens welcome high-flying Rivers Angels in a battle of contrasting momentum.

FC Robo have been  rejuvenated with back-to-back wins after three straight losses. At home, they’ve picked up 10 points from a possible 15.

Rivers Angels remain unbeaten in 10 games (W8, D2), with four away wins and a draw but they still play second fiddle to Bayelsa Queens who only lead by virtue of better goals difference.

The Port Harcourt side lead the head-to-head with four wins in seven, including a 4-2 triumph in their last clash.

Benue Queens, still searching for their first league win, take on Bayelsa Queens after managing to halt their losing streak with a draw against Delta Queens last midweek.

Bayelsa, meanwhile, have impressed on the road with three wins and two draws.

The Prosperity Girls routed Benue Queens 5-1 in the reverse fixture in Lafia and will look to complete the double to remain on top the table.

In Uyo, Ibom Angels face Naija Ratels in a crucial contest.

Ratels, seeking a second Super Six appearance after their 2021/22 debut, have four wins, four draws, and two losses so far—sharing the league’s highest draw rate.

Ibom Angels have picked  three wins and a draw at home but lost their fortress status in Matchday 9 after a 1-0 defeat to Rivers Angels.
