Obaseki to PDP: You are ignorant on security matters

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was ignorant on issues of providing security in the state.

Governor Obaseki who was responding to accusation by the PDP that his refusal to spend part of security votes to relevant agencies was responsible for crime waves in the state said ‘We don’t listen to ignorant talk.’

Obaseki spoke Thursday when he visited the Edo State Police Command to inspect available facilities with a view to know how much support to provide for the take – off of the new security architecture.

He said the new security architecture would be unveiled on December 1 and a bill was being prepared to give legal backing to the Security Trust Fund launched by his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Governor Obaseki stated that the need to improve the operational capability of the police in the state led to the deployment of a new Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kakumo.

Obaseki said his administration have been reviewing several proposals to know which equipment and technology to procure for the security of the state.

His words, “We have always placed high priority on security. You have witnessed the security situation in Edo. We are working on a new security architecture in the state and we have done quite a bit of work and we expect that by December 1, the new security architecture will be unveiled.

“What do you expect of the PDP who do not know anything. They are ignorance, they ran the state down.  You saw the turnout at the Alaghodaro Investment Summit. Underlining all of the conversation is that we should give assurance to people who want to come and invest in this state that their lives and investment will be safe.

“The Security Trust Fund was not backed by law. Under the new arrangement, we are having law in place to back the Security Trust Fund. As part of the review, we are looking at the law establishing the Neighbourhood Watch.”

Kakumo described the synergy between the state government and the police as perfect.

He stated that the support provided by Governor Obaseki has led to better service delivery to the people of the state.

  • Ijaw warns Obaseki against arresting Edo monarch

Ijaw warns Obaseki against arresting Edo monarch

An Ijaw religious group, the Order of Egbesu Brotherhood (OEB), has warned of consequences if the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, failed to withdraw his order to arrest the King of Olodiama Kingdom, HRM Godwin Oguyenbo.

The brotherhood in a statement, Thursday, said the Ijaw would consider any attempt to arrest the monarch as a desecration and abuse of its traditional stool.

The statement, which was signed by the Coordinator of OEB, Mr. Bodmass Kemepadei, said the governor was only acting the scripts of the Oba of Benin, who earlier declared the coronation of Oguyenbo as unlawful.

“We wish to inform the governor that we are aware that he is only carrying out the directive of the Oba of Benin. We are, therefore, surprised why on earth an Ijaw affair will be giving the Bini people a sleepless night to the extent that they had to usurp the state power against us”, the OEB said.

The foremost Ijaw traditional religious group faulted Obaseki’s claim that the ijaw community in the area was nonexistent, describing it as a clear display of sheer ignorance.

The group said the ijaw people had proved with historical fact that they were the aborigines of those lands adding that the second-class treatment they suffered in the hands of the Benin Kingdom.

The OEB said: “The ijaws deemed it necessary to have a monarch that would be significant for the growth and development of the people and lands. Besides this is not the first time the Kingdom is having a King.

“We also deduce that though it is the voice of Obaseki, but the words of the royal father of Benin Kingdom is behind the order of arrest issued, simply because they want to annex Olodiama kingdom into Benin Kingdom, because of the oil and seaport sited there.

“We therefore call on Obaseki to desist from actions that are capable of causing acrimony between Binis and Ijaws. Obaseki as the administrative head of the state should rather be concerned about moves that will bring peace.

“He should not brew another crisis in the face of the already-existing tension created by militants groups. The Ijaws are not at war with binis, but we are also not afraid to defend our territory if the need arises.

“We have been living in peace and we would continue to maintain it, but obaseki should thread with caution, let him stop beating the drums of war. The governor should not allow himself to be used as a tool of instigating violence and causing unrest. He has no right to order for the arrest of a well-recognised King who has flouted no law”.

The group called on the Federal Government to call Obaseki to order to avert a possible inter-tribal war in the state.

It urged the government to stop security agencies from carrying out the order of the governor and look for other means of resolving the issue.

“Arresting an Ijaw king is a sacrilege and will be resisted by Ijaws. We restate once again that Ijaws are committed to peace. This, we have displayed by supporting federal government peace effort. But we will not accept any action aimed at desecrating our sacred institutions”.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Osinbajo said the industrial park will create 170, 000 direct and indirect jobs and would contribute significantly to the country’s manufacturing sector.

He commended the Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, for the huge public-private investment initiative and said: “This is what the country has been waiting for to take us to the height that we desire. Several other countries have embarked on this line of industry and succeeded. If we put in the same effort as them, we will also excel.”

The Vice President further said, “This strategy has been adopted in some Asian countries and they have achieved economic growth, diversified their economy, and are now exporters of consumer goods.”

He expressed optimism that the industrial park would not only lead to job creation but bring down the cost of goods and services in the state and country at large, change the face of the Nigerian economy and unleash its industrial potential.

He assured of the federal government’s readiness to support the project and see to its completion.

Earlier, Governor Obaseki said the industrial park at Iyanomo is the first in the series of parks his administration intends to establish in the state to make Edo an Industrial hub.

The governor said that the park, which is a public-private partnership initiative was designed by Mahindra Engineering and would conform to 21st Century standard.

“I promised that if I become the governor of Edo State I will create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive and improve the quality of lives of our people. Our goal to industrialise Edo is already yielding results and our hope is to create employment for thousands of people in the state.”

He said that the gas that will power the industrial park already exists within the park’s location and assured that the park would be built within 12 months.

The governor commended the Federal Government for its relentless commitment to the industrialisation of Edo, saying that the private sector would contribute about 74 percent share of investments to the industrial park.

The event was chaired by the Benin Monarch, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.

Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Cooperatives and Employment, Emmanuel Usoh, said the development of the industrial park would assist in the formation of industrial clusters that will serve as incubation centres for new businesses.

…new skills centers for Igueben, Ubiaja

The governor made the disclosure at Igueben, the administrative headquarters of the council, during his thank-you-tour of some local government areas in Edo Central senatorial district.

Obaseki said, “My administration will support the Edo College of Education in Igueben, to get all its programmes accredited and ensure the execution of projects in the institution. We intend to reposition the school and ensure a smooth take-off of the institution and make it one of the best.”

Governor Obaseki also pledged to set up a vocational centre to impart youth with skills needed to be employable, adding, “We have promised to create jobs for our youths and to prepare them for the employment opportunities that our government will provide. We will set up skills acquisition centre here in Igueben to train and provide them with the necessary skills they need for the jobs.”

Obaseki said he could not have been governor today if not for the commitment, determination, courage of members of the party who made it possible. As such, he pledged to work with the party to transform the state. He solicited their support, stating that it will be difficult to achieve results if the party members fail to cooperate with his administration.

“I rely on vital information from you to help govern the state. We have to meet regularly for you to hear from us what we are doing as a government while we listen to you to solve the challenges confronting you,” he said.

He revealed that his administration has awarded contract for construction of Igu-Amahor road, noting that there was a brief delay because the contractor is waiting for the dry season to move to site.

Earlier, the APC chairman in Igueben, Mr. Sunday Iredia, commended the governor’s achievements since assuming office, noting that the state has seen improvement in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and prudent management of the state’s funds. He appealed to the governor to address the deplorable state of some roads in the council.

At Ubiaja in Esan South East, Obaseki promised an agricultural processing zone at Ilushin in addition to a vocational centre that will provide the necessary skills for the youths of the area, to prepare them for the jobs his administration will provide for them.

He equally assured them that roads in the council area will not be forgotten, adding “I have stationed a contractor in Edo Central Senatorial District to ensure that a number of roads are constructed, we are only waiting for the dry season to commence work”.

The APC chairman in Esan South East, Mr. Chris Aghughu, said he was delighted that Obaseki made history by appointing the first female commissioner from the area and his recent donations to Industrial Training Fund (ITF) trainees. He further urged the governor to reactivate Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) Relay Station at Ivue, Uromi, so that they could follow his programmes on television.

At Obaseki’s thank-you-tour at Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area, calls were made on the party faithful to join hands with his administration to change the face of politics by making the people believe in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He assured the people that his administration will respect the supremacy of the party and work to transform the state for the people to have a better life.

The governor, during the thank-your-tours, continued rewarding wards that performed best at the ballot during the governorship election that brought him to power.

At Igueben, Ubiaja and Uromi, the governor received defectors from other political parties in the state to the APC fold. Among them are Dickson Idemudia and his supporters at Igueben and Alhaji Musa Isiwele at Uromi. Obaseki urged the new party members to work hard for the party and ensure that all those they left behind in their former parties are won over to the APC.

Anyaoku, Obaseki give conditions for Nigeria’s restructuring

Former Secretary General of the Common Wealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, says that Nigeria will fare better if the on-going call to restructure the country into regions is adhered to.

Anyaoku gave this view yesterday, shortly after paying a courtesy visit to Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, at Government House, Benin City.

He said that Nigeria’s economy was more viable and rate of development faster when it operated a regional system of government.

He described governor Obaseki as a visionary governor and Edo State is fortunate to have him.

Responding, Obaseki said that given the cost of governance at the centre, restructuring is inevitable if Nigeria must make progress as a country.

He extolled the leadership quality of Chief Anyaoku, stressing that the former top scribe of the Commonwealth stands for good governance and part of the generation that did the nation proud while in office. “He is an international personality who stands for good governance and diplomatic skills,” Obaseki said.

  • Edo to revamp housing sector, targets new investments

Edo to revamp housing sector, targets new investments

…As new Executive Chairman, Isoken Omo takes charge

The Edo State Government has concluded plans to reform its real estate sector with a new roadmap that provides for re-certification of estate owners, repossession of abandoned properties and development of new estates across the state.

The new Executive Chairman of the Edo Development and Property Authority, (EDPA) Isoken Omo, disclosed this at the Government House, Benin City, on Thursday.

Omo explained that the state’s new housing roadmap is already being implemented with the perennial issues of debt, encroachment and undocumented occupation receiving the desired attention.

She said that the state’s housing sector now falls under EDPA’s purview and the new management of the agency plans not only to remodel estate management in the state, but to also attract investments to the sector.

She added that efforts are being put in place to revamp the agency to bridge the state’s housing gaps as well as reposition it to attract investments in real estate, especially as the state is now poised to be a major industrial and economic hub.

According to her, “We discovered that many of the original occupants of the houses have left the estate. Some of the housing units in the estate were built when we were Bendel State. So, when Delta was carved out of Edo, some people, who had apartments in these estates, left to live in Warri and other places.

“We are launching an aggressive campaign to recertify the owners of the houses. This is not to witch-hunt anyone. We just want to have an authentic database that would be as updated regularly.”

Noting that some housing estates in the state were neglected in the past, which gave way for illegal occupation and debt, she said there are targeted, well-laid-out efforts to reform housing.

She said the EDPA would hold a sensitisation campaign to inform the people on the new policies and initiatives guarding the housing sector, noting “part of our campaign is also to repossess buildings that may have been abandoned or illegally occupied.”

Omo was recently appointed to chair the EDPA by the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki. She has over 25 years of real estate and property development experience in Nigeria and the United Kingdom (UK). She attended the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port-Harcourt, where she bagged a degree in Estate Management, and obtained a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 1999 from the University of Hull, United Kingdom. She has since assumed office.

Edo will not negotiate with criminals – Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said the state will not be forced by criminal elements and organised crime overlords to the negotiation table, stressing that law and order, as well as the liberty of the ordinary law-abiding Edo citizens and residents, are not for sale.

Obaseki, who called on Edo people to remain calm but vigilant, noted that an elaborate scheme was being finalised to rein in the orchestrators of the recent violence, bring them to justice and restore sustainable peace and safety in the state.

According to Obaseki, “Edo people, the majority of whom are law-abiding, should be rest assured that the promise to restore sanity to the state have been fulfilled. The state government would never return to the old order. The oppressive actions of different groups who had been fattened over the years by extorting honest and hardworking people in the name of revenue collection have been curbed. No matter the amount of pushback from perpetrators, they remain dislodged and would not have any reason to harass honest traders, citizens, and other residents.”

He said it was regrettable that the perpetrators of criminal activities had lived on the proceeds of crime, oppression, and extortion so much so that they have forgotten how to earn a living through honest means, noting that the state government intends to teach them how to do honest work and earn a living in the process.

“We are opening up various sectors of the economy to ensure that jobs are available to both the skilled, semi-skilled and even the unskilled. We are also building vocational and technical training institutions where these people will be directed and trained for free in order to reintegrate them into the society where people live off the fruit of their daily labour in legitimate enterprises,” the governor said.

Be patient with Buhari – Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has urged Nigerians to be patient with the federal government of Nigeria as President Mohammadu Buhari tries to salvage the country destroyed by the past leadership of the country.

Governor Obaseki spoke at the 24th convocation ceremony of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State where a total of 18,010 graduands for the award of Post Higher Diploma, Higher National Diploma.

Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu, Governor Obaseki said his administration understands the importance of technical education as the bed rock of any developed countries.

This, he noted, was the reason the present administration is investing more in revamping moribund technical colleges across the state.

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, urged tertiary institutions in the country to focus more on technical and  entrepreneurial courses in their institutions for job creation.

Mallam Adamu who was represented by Mr. Ekpenyong Ekpenyong, Director, Physical Planning and Development, National Board for Technical Education, said youths in né country must be encouraged to key into entrepreneurial study rather than seeking for the scarce white collar jobs.

Adamu admonished the various institutions of learnings to embark on more research that will turn the fortune of the country around.

State Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Emmanuel Kachukwu, said it was difficult for the present administration to meet job demands in the county because past administration plunged the country into hardship as result of poor management and embezzlement of public funds making it.

He said, “I have seen a lot of money taken away by the past administration and because of this, the present administration is trying to revive the economy.

“There is no money to establish industries to absorb them. Our youths are now roaming the streets. And when they do, we are not safe. We must engage the youth and for we to overcome all these challenges, our institution of learnings must incorporate entrepreneurial and technical courses in their curriculum”, he said.

On the part of the former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh, while blaming the past administration for failing to save for the future, charged the graduands to cultivate the culture of saving for the future to avoid the mistakes of the past governments.

“The youth in Nigeria today, they lack understanding, for instance, when the last administration was there, we have to save money for the rainy day but we failed to do so. We ate the future in the present. Now you know, the present is today but yesterday, was the present. So yesterday, looking at today, we are looking at the future. All of you here, all your entitlements, you sat down and ate it.

“All of you who were growing up, what we should have done to empower you, we did not do. Today, you are deprived. Obasanjo left money, Yar’ Adua left money and Jonathan inherited the money but unfortunately by the time he left, we have eaten the money and not Jonathan that ate the money but people ate the money”, he said.

The event climaxed with the conferment of Auchi Polytechnic Fellowship Awards on the Hon. Minister of Petroleum (State), Dr. Ibe Emmanuel Kachukwu and the Hon Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amenchi.

Edo prioritises improved security to attract investments

…To decongest prisons, reduce number of inmates awaiting trial by 50%

To address the myriad of security challenges facing the state, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has vowed to work with relevant security agencies to reduce the incidence of crime and engender a friendly environment for investment.

Obaseki said this in his keynote address at the quarterly Federal and State Security Administrators’ Meeting (FSSAM) holding between September 14 and 15 at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Benin City, Edo State.

Narrowing down to reoccurring clashes between farmers and herdsmen, the governor said it was wrong to politicise the incidents, noting that the possession of arms by the herdsmen called for increased security measures as “the herdsmen we knew in the past were only concerned about their cows, and had no business with maps. But with what we now witness, it has become imperative to seek the support of security agencies for a safe and secure business climate.”

Obaseki also said that the proliferation of hate speeches has become a national concern that must be nipped in the bud, as it portends unsavoury implications not just for the people but also for attracting investment.

Noting that the state is committed to ensuring a safe environment for business, he said “we are revamping the Operation Thunderstorm in the state, a security initiative that was set up by my predecessor, former governor Comrade Adams Oshiomole. We intend on improving the security infrastructure in the state. In this regard, we need the cooperation of members of security services who are in Edo State, including the Military, The Nigeria Police, and all others.”

He said that as the gateway state to the South-South section of the country, the state was committed to attracting investment and creating jobs, hence it would not take matters of security and law enforcement with levity.

On the state of the prisons in the state, governor Obaseki said that the state was working on decongesting the state prisons, adding, “We want to decongest the prisons.  We are working to reduce the number of persons in the prisons. We want to reduce the number of inmates by 50 percent. We want to relocate the prison at Sapele road by expanding Oko prisons.”

Mrs. Emi Ogunboye, who represented the Permanent Secretary, Special Services at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Amb. Aminu Nabegu, said that the federal government was worried about the recent resort to hate speeches by secessionist agitators. Speaking on the imperative of national security, unity and the need to avoid divisive tendencies, she noted, “The pro-Biafra group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has heightened its secessionist campaign. This has caused other youth groups in the North and South West to issue ultimatum for Igbos to leave their areas. The Federal government cautions groups and individuals involved in spreading hate to desist from the act. The continued existence of this country in our best interest.”

The Secretary to the Edo State government, Mr. Osarodion Ogie Esq., said the state was honoured to be hosting the event, stressing that he hoped that the participants would make recommendations that would help the government in maintaining law and order.

He said, “Edo state is a critical link for connecting different parts of the state. There is a connection between security and economic growth. We want to ensure that Edo state provides the right atmosphere that guarantees that investors not only come with investments, but that their investment is secure.”

Osinbajo opens 60, 000 Metric Tonnes Fertilizer Plant in Edo

…Hails Obaseki’s effort at improving business environment

The Vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has inaugurated the Edo Fertilizer Plant and Chemical Company Limited, a public, private venture which has the capacity to produce about 60,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer per annum.

The Vice president who was accompanied by the ministers of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh; and Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, commended the foresight of the Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, for creating the enabling business environment which saw to the revitalization of the fertilizer plant which had been non-functional for about 14 years.

Osinbajo expressed delight at the 500 direct jobs that have been created by the investment, stressing that much more employment opportunities would result from the ancillary economic activities that would be generated by the fertilizer plant.

Commending the governor for having the right attitude to development, he called on leaders across the country in different areas to dedicate themselves to activities that will improve the lot of their people.

“The President Buhari administration is committed to making it easy for investors to do business in the country. We want to achieve this through the promotion of transparency and efficiency. We want every state to be involved in this drive and create the enabling environment for business to thrive in their domain,” Osinbajo said.

He said the revitalization of fertilizer blending plants across the country was the direct consequence of the presidential initiative to diversify the economy from crude oil, boost farming activities as well as develop the agriculture value chain.

He added that agricultural activities in the country could be enhanced significantly if there was improved access to inputs, hence the drive to make fertilizer which is a major farm input, easily available and accessible to farmers in Nigeria.

Osinbajo explained that the blending plant would also complement Governor Obaseki’s agricultural development initiative which is aimed at improving investment in agriculture via public, private partnership as well as creating jobs for youths across the three senatorial districts of the state.

In his remarks, Governor Obaseki said the commissioning of the fertilizer plant signified a milestone in his administration as the facility was never operated for a day after it was fraudulently launched by the opposition party about 14 years ago.

He said what the opposition could not do for nearly a decade, his government, with the support of Edo people, has done in only about nine months.

He said: “The aim of revitalizing this plant is to make the state self-sufficient in food production and enable farmers get fertilizer at affordable prices. We in Edo State are determined to make food available in the country.”

He added the facility would go a long way in providing fertilizer for neighbouring states such as Kogi, Delta, Ondo and Anambra among others as it was the only blending plant in the region.

Obaseki commended the leadership role played by the Federal Government in the execution of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative as well as the management of WACOT for partnering with the Edo State government in revamping the plant.

“This achievement is an open call to other investors to bring in new technology, create more jobs and expand our economic opportunities,” he said.

The governor called on the Otaru of Auchi, the community where the plant is located, to ensure the protection of the facility against vandalism as it creates a large range of opportunities for businesses in the community and the state.

Also speaking the Group Managing Director of WACOT, Mr. Rahul Savara, commended the Vice President for commissioning the plant and governor Godwin Obaseki for fostering the partnership between the state and his company.

He said the presidential Fertilizer initiative has made local production feasible and sustainable in the country, assuring that the Edo Fertilizer and Chemical Company would be made up of 95 per cent indigenous workers.

Speaking of the numerous benefits of having a fertilizer blending plant in the state, the Deputy Governor of Edo, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu said: “Many jobs will be created, it will boost business activities, farmers will no longer go through undue hardship before they get fertilizer to buy and productivity will increase. We are keying into the federal government policy to make fertilizer affordable and available in the country.”

In his remark, the Otaru of Auchi, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Aliru H. Momoh, Ikelebe the III, said the commissioning of the plant demonstrates Governor Obaseki’s zeal to improve the economy as well as industrialize the state.

“The governor brought in people to revamp this plant and told us at the palace that within three months, it will become functional, we taught it was a joke, but thanks to Allah that we are here to witness the commissioning of the plant,” the traditional ruler said.
