  • APC disowns protesting youths

The Edo State chapter of the All Progressive Congress has disowned some members of the party who threatened not to work for the victory of the party in future elections in the state.

It said the members consisting mainly youths were dissident members of the party.

Some members of the APC led by Comrade Tony Kabaka had said that the APC risk losing Edo to the PDP in 2019 if Governor Godwin Obaseki did not change his style of governance.

Kabaka accused Obaseki of abandoning the youths and party leaders that worked for his victory in 2016.

But State Youth Leader of the APC, Mr. Valentine Asuen, who spoke at a press briefing described allegations by Kabaka as false and misleading.

Asuen said youths in the state have been involved in every policy initiative and programme of Obaseki through various organs of the APC.

He said the state government would no longer allow harassment of market women and drivers in the guise of collecting revenue by private contractors.

According to him, “The governor established EdoJobs portal, through which thousands of Edo youths have been gainfully employed while others have been trained on several skills.

“The Edo APC government ensured that all political appointees, namely; Commissioners, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistants, among others, were nominated by the party structures in the 192 wards in the state.

“So, I do not know where Kabaka, perhaps, after waking up from the wrong side of the bed, got the information that Edo youths are not carried along by the Governor.

“The youths with the right skills and qualifications are being employed and trained daily through Edo Jobs portal and the Edo Innovation Hub, without knowing people in government.

“Thousands of the youths have been engaged through the Public Works Volunteer Scheme and the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA), who are adding value to governance on a daily basis.”

Asuen noted that the Obaseki led government is a sticker to the rule of law and would not be intimidated into succumbing to cheap blackmail by people whose interest is nothing but themselves.

“Never again will we allow the harassment, intimidation and assault of our market women and men in the name of revenue collection, more so, when technology-based revenue collection systems abound,” he said.

  • Fayose’s fall is a signal to Wike, says Edo APC

The All Progressive Congress in Edo State has said that the failure of Ayodele Fayose in last Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State was a signal to Governor Nyesom Wike and other PDP governors in the South South region.

It said it would take the lead in next year’s general elections for all the South South states come under the APC.

State Secretary of the APC, Mr. Lawrence Okah, who stated this in a chat with newsmen urged Nigerians to stop believing what he termed rumors and lies the PDP posted on the social media during the conduct of Ekiti governorship polls.

Okah stated that the victory of the APC in Ekiti was a signal that the party is ready to win other states in the South South region.

According to him, “The APC is the party to beat in any election. We went to Ekiti to defect an incumbent. With Ekiti victory, we have taken over the South West. Our next journey is the South South.

“All those things you hear from the social media will not stop the APC to ensuring that the right thing is done.

“Only a mental person could do what Fayose has done to announce election results. Any sane pêrson knows that only INEC has the powers to announce election result. The FG should send Fayose to a psychiatrist.”

Chief of Staff to Governor Godwin Obaseki, Mr. Taiwo Akerele, said the people of Ekiti have demonstrated that they were deceived by Fayose’s stomach infrastructure.

“You recall that four years ago, this same man was cheated by the ruling PDP out of power and he didn’t complain, he accepted and he moved on but today, the people of Ekiti state have realised that they were cheated and deceived by stomach infrastructure and they have come back and re-elected the man because they have confidence in him.”

  • Human Trafficking: Obaseki advocates skills-based migration

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that Edo indigenes migrating to other parts of the world stand a better chance at life if they are equipped with on-demand skills to make them globally competitive.

Governor Obaseki, who said this during a town hall meeting with indigenes of Edo under the aegis of Great Benin Origins (GBO) Worldwide, in Brussels, Belgium, noted that the state government is already working out modalities for Edo youth to develop these skills in the state.

He kicked against the activities of human traffickers, who have given the state a bad name, noting that the state government is firming arrangements with local and international partners to train youth in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), so that they can be globally competitive.

“Instead of all these people coming in to take money from these children, you can come, we will register you, we will train you, we will certify you and give you visas to go and work abroad. That is how it is done in other countries.

“Our people are very important, and I am calling on you to join me in laying the foundation for the future,” he said.

He lauded the group for working assiduously in sustaining the Benin identity, calling for a united front in the quest to develop the state.

According to him, “Let us not make ourselves sub-minorities. Let us show unity and strength in numbers. So, we must make sure we come together, and reach out to others as Edo people.

“We are doing other things in the area of infrastructure. That is the one you will see. We are rebuilding our road networks. Thank God we have a well-planned like city”

President, Great Benin Origins (GBO) Worldwide, Engr. Isaac Igbinosun, lauded the governor for his leadership style, commitment to attracting investment to the state and initiatives on youth development.

“We are proud of you, we are proud of your achievement since you took over the leadership of governing our state, Edo. We feel safe each time we look at what you are doing. We are solidly behind you and anytime we are called upon, we will be there to contribute our quota back home. It is always said that no matter where you go, home is home. We are very proud of you, we encourage you to continue,” Igbinosun said.

The Great Benin Origin (GBO) is a social cultural organization that seeks to bring all Edo indigenes in diaspora under one umbrella with the purpose of restoring the lost glory of the great Benin Kingdom, promoting the Edo culture and tradition and assisting the economic development of the state.

Igbinosun noted that some of the programmes of the group in promoting the preservation of Edo cultures include sponsorship of Edo culture and language competitions, award of scholarships to primary and secondary schools’ students as well as organising a diaspora state workers’ programme for the youth.

He urged the state government to continue with the reforms on the ease of doing business, as members of the group are interested in investing in various aspects of the state’s economy with focus on agriculture and food security.

The group also applauded the governor on his initiatives to improve the security architecture and guarantees on the sanctity of contracts, noting that these would endear the state to investors.

  • Edo, NEMA partner on Emergency Ambulance Bay

The Edo State Government has concluded plans to partner the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the construction of an Emergency Ambulance Bay at Irrua, in Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State.

Speaking during a visit to the proposed site for the bay at Irrua, Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Mr. Yakubu Gowon, said the state government was ready to provide structures for first responders to do their job without hinderance.

Gowon said the state government was keen on the execution of the project and was ready to provide all the necessary support, noting, “The initiative for the site was borne a month ago and a proposal was sent to NEMA for its execution.

“We are expecting the facility to be built in a few months from now and are optimistic it will take care of emergencies along the Irrua axis of Benin -Auchi Expressway, going by the high vehicular traffic on the corridor.”

Director General (DG), NEMA, represented by the Agency’s Director, Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Akugbe Iyamu, said the facility would help reduce incidence of death recorded from road accidents along the Irrua axis of Benin -Auchi Expressway.

He noted that the facility would have a Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) with medical personnel, who will provide care at the shortest time before referral to the hospital, adding, “We got a proposal from the Edo State Government for NEMA to establish a response facility in the state.”

“The agency is passionate about the initiative and have come to inspect the proposed site for us to replicate the MICU models we have in Abuja, here in the state,” he said.

According to the DG, the site for the project was strategic for a response facility considering its proximity to the Irrua Specialist Hospital.

The Chairman, Esan Central Local Government Council, Dr. Edokpa Waziri, commended the state government for the proactive decision, noting, the Ewu axis of the Benin-Auchi Road had recorded series of road crashes that had claimed lives and property.

Waziri said the land for the facility was provided by the council, adding that the council will continue to support the effort of the state government in provision of essential amenities.

  • Oshiomhole: Only mercenaries are leaving APC

Says PDP members still occupying top positions in government to go soon

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday described those leaving the party as mercenaries who joined the party for personal gains, assuring party members all PDP members still holding sensitive positions in the current government will soon be flushed out.

Oshiomhole who spoke while inaugurating the non-NWC members of the party leadership elected at its recently concluded national convention said while he is ready to go to any length to persuade and appeal to genuine people who are aggrieved, he will not intimidated by any coalition against the party.

He said the formation of the Coalition of United Political Parties led by the PDP was a clear admittance by the main opposition and other political parties that they don’t have what it takes to unseat the current government.

He said the party was “aware that even as at today, we still have a lot of PDP people occupying very important positions in federal agencies. We will do everything possible to purge these elements out of the system because we are a party of change.

“They are the conservative right-wing party. We cannot entrust to conservative forces an agenda for change. Government is not in the Villa. Villa is the head of government. Government is in the agencies – what they do, how they do it, the quality of service delivery and the style of that service delivery.

“That is how the ordinary man interfaces with power and if these agencies are in the hands of those who do not believe in our change agenda, then we cannot expect miracles from them.

“And for those who are aggrieved as to how certain things are done, those who question that they do not seem to see the difference because substantially, PDP is still managing these agencies, we have a duty to convince the federal executive that this government has no business with any PDP in sensitive federal agencies and using their old tactics in service delivery. That, I believe is a task that all of us must pursue.

“I believe that we now must work consciously to ensure that in replacing, we replace sinners with believers. Believers are those who are card-carrying members of our party and before we go outside the party family, we must convince ourselves that the persons we are taking, we are taking him because we do not have that particular expertise within the family.

“But even so, he must first take the card and demonstrate loyalty because if you do not believe in a process, you cannot be entrusted with the management of that process. It is not because we are hungry to let our people have jobs, but because I have no confidence that PDP appointees can drive the changes that APC promised.

“APC promises must be kept by APC activists at managerial level, at board level and at political level. That, we must all work to achieve. But while we are working on that, I will ask you to have patience because some people give up too early in life.

“If you work with conviction, and you didn’t get exactly what you expected, that is not a reason to look the other way. I think the most fundamental purpose that brought the APC into being was to save Nigerians from the misrule of the PDP. That has been achieved, but the second challenge is now to take advantage of our being in office to work hard to deliver to Nigerians, first, before ourselves”

Speaking on the R-APC, the former Edo State Governor said “We will do everything possible to assuage those who have genuine grievances who simply want fairness and justice. I believe on your behalf, I can give them all the assurance that there will be justice, there will be fairness.

“However, for the mercenaries, who mistakenly joined the party because of what they can gain personally, not for the good of the country, not for the good of the party; they came in purely for greener pastures and they have found that they have had to work hard to plant the grass, to wet it, nourish it for it to become green and they cannot wait, they want to run, not because we have wronged them but because we just cannot satisfy a mercenary, for those ones, we will not only open the door, we are ready to open even the windows.

“But I am ready to go to any length to persuade and appeal to genuine people who are aggrieved. But like I have said, I am not intimidated; I am not frightened, I am not impaired and I want to urge everyone of you individually and collectively that we cannot be intimidated.

“And if any of us had doubts, from what we saw the other day, it is a collection of old coaches searching frantically for new ideas. The more they search, the more they get old players, not even the best of them, but the worst of old players and I do not think Nigerians can be fooled by a coalition of that.

“If you harness the energy of one million snails and transform it into one snail to run, it cannot catch up with an Antelope. So, when we were told 50 political parties had merged to confront us towards 2019, I was excited because first, that is a clear admission that as things stand today, neither the one we defeated before, the PDP, nor the new one that claim they have formed has what it takes.

“They are now saying to Nigerians that ‘we want to capture power even though we are different, but for the purpose of capturing power, we will unite’, and I do not think Nigerians need any further explanation that enough of this opportunistic politicking”.

Speaking on the various options available to party to curtail money politics, he said “We have a lot of options in our constitution. We have the option of direct primaries. By direct primaries, you remove the power away from delegates to the party members and so if you think that you can compromise the delegates and undermine the wishes of majority of our members, we will call our members to do the voting.

“So, all those options are open. If we ask you to do consensus, you refuse to do consensus and you want to do a one man show, we knowing that one man cannot do election, we will neutralize those abuse of privileges by allowing direct membership participation.

“This leadership cannot be compromised. We will not be intimidated and we will not misuse our privileges to deny any one of our member’s appropriate opportunities to contests and have the opportunity to serve the country”.

Speaking on this weekend’s governorship election in Ekiti, Oshiomhole said “You saw our outing yesterday (Tuesday) in spite of all the crude misuse of limited state power which Gov. Fayose chose to do. But our superior commitment to progress and to overcome challenges explains the huge crowd that you saw.

“I was happy today that he was talking about crowd that was hired. If we can hire crowd, right, that is nice because he had demobilize the movement facility by paying off all the taxi drivers, bus drivers and Okada riders to make sure that there was no local transportation.

“But like I said, you can demobilize all of those. But what you cannot demobilize is the will of the people to do what they believe in. And we saw a stadium that was packed full as if Fayose was not in town.

“I was excited and I feel proud that our members in Ekiti know that for us to overcome and to win the forthcoming election against a man who has had to rely on instrument of violence not only to win but to retain power that they need to be one inch ahead of him. That point was made on Wednesday and I am sure it will be proven by the special grace of God on Saturday.”

According to him, “Rising from an emergency meeting today, we wish to respectfully remind Edo State Governor that Benin youths are worried over their exclusion from the amnesty program.

“Our counterparts in Niger Delta are enjoying skill acquisition and scholarship programs of the amnesty office under the National Security Adviser, and our youths are completely excluded because our people have not shown inclination and tenacity in armed militancy.

“Our senatorial district is host to the largest gas terminal in West Africa, oil and gas pipelines transverses our seven Local Government Areas, and oil and has have been discovered in very large proportions in six out of seven LGAs of our areas.

“We are appealing to the coordinator of the Amnesty program Prof. Charles Dokubor not to succumb to the antics of his predecessors who undermined peaceful ethnic nationalities and dealt only with warring communities.”

  • Police begins manhunt for ritual killers in Edo

Edo State Police Command has commence search for alleged ritual killers operating along the Upper Siluko axis in Egor local government area.

In January this year, commercial bike riders had protested the killing of their colleagues inside a forest located in a boundary between Ogheghe and Egbaen villages.

The protest by the Okada rider was occasioned by the discovery of a dead body inside the bush and the miraculous escape of one bike rider from his killers.

It was gathered that the recent search for the alleged ritual killers followed a fella audio message that has gone viral narrating how the wife of her nephew escaped from the ritual killers.

The female who did not state her name accused policemen at the Evbuotubu Police station of not showing any seriousness in pursuing the killers.

She said the victim boarded a bus from Ekenwan barracks to Ring Road and was touched by white handkerchief by two supposed passengers in the bus after which she became unconscious.

The voice said the woman was later rescued at the Upper Siluko axis after missing for five days.

She said the victim told them that the ritual killers took two of them inside the bus to a bush and tied them down after shaving the hair on their head.

“My brother’s wife said the people killed two women in her presence by cutting their neck. She said they were stark naked.

“She told us that she was released from the camp naked after their supposed leader asked that she should be released.

“Some people she met on the way thought she was a mad woman because she was naked. It was a old woman she met at a farm that gave her clothes and took her to where she made calls to the sister of her husband.

“The husband reported to the police but the police have gone to see the woman at the hospital. The IPO said the woman should come to give statement after she has recovered.”

Edo State Police Commissioner, Babatunde Kokumo, could not be reached for comments but a top police source said a team has been set up to unravel the ritual killers.

The source,”We are aware of the audio message. Our team are working on it to verify the claims. We will let the world know about our findings.”
