Obaseki meets Ijaw leaders, preaches peace

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, on Friday, said without the rule of law, peace and order, there would be no progress and the realisation of individual and collective ambition in any society.

Obaseki made this disclosure at the Government House when he met with the elders and leaders of thought and the leadership of the Ijaw National Congress, Edo chapter in Benin.

The governor said that the meeting, which held at his instance, was to interact with the Ijaw leaders on their basic needs in their communities.

Obaseki said that the State Government had not marginalised any group in the state.

He said the government was ready to provide the needed amenities but he would not embark on a project that would be hindered by any crisis.

Obaseki tasked the leaders to shun unnecessary sentiments, which was capable of hindering the development of the marine area of the state.

He enjoined the leaders to sheath their swords and assured them that his administration would attend to their needs.

Mr Edmond Doyah-Tiemo, who read an address on behalf of the Ijaw leaders, complained of alleged marginalisation, oppression and balkanisation of the Ijaw people, which he said, had hampered their existence as a people.

He lauded Obaseki for his efforts to open up the area, especially through the proposed Gelegele Seaport and assured him of their support.

Edo PDP threatens legal action over defection of Rep

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State Thursday threatened to institute legal action against Hon Ehiozuwa Agbonnayima over his defection to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Hon Agbonnayima who is representing Ikpoba-Okha/Egor in the House of Representatives announced his defection to the APC and resignation from the PDP during plenary.

The PDP however described Agbonnayima action as unlawful even if he is free to associate with any political association of his choosing.

A statement signed by state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Chris Nehikhare, said the PDP frowned at Agbonnayima’s decision not to resign his membership of the House of Representatives before moving to his new political abode.

Nehikhare noted that Agbonnayima was elected under the platform of PDP and as such the mandate belonged to the PDP.

According to the statement, “His conduct is in breach of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria and it is only right, proper and mandatory that his seat is declared vacant.

“You will agree with me that PDP has no division or faction. Consequently, Hon EJ Agbonayima’s seat should be declared vacant. Edo PDP will approach the courts to so declare.”

Edo shuts disputed Obu mine site in Okpella

The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate shutdown of the disputed Obu Mine site in Okpella community, Edo State, following a directive from the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and to avoid the breakdown of law and order in the community.

The State government directed security operatives in the state to ensure there are no operations in the mine site until the outcome of the suit, or pending further instructions from the supervisory ministry, which is the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel.

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki gave the order on Monday, when leaders of Okpella community paid a courtesy call at the Government House, in Benin City, to express their concern about the deteriorating security situation in the community.

“I am very concerned, particularly because of the security implication of this impasse on Okpella community. The issues are clear; two entities cannot own the same asset, particularly in an industry like mining with international best practices and processes for determining ownership rights. I don’t believe that Nigeria is different. And when there is a dispute as per ownership, there are also laid down globally accepted ways of resolving these disputes. People cannot resort to self-help in a country where there is rule of law.

“I understand that the matter of the ownership of Obu mines is in the court and parties are waiting the declaration by the court. Therefore, Edo State Government, today, following what we have received from the Federal Ministry of Mines will close down Obu mines until the determination of the suit currently pending in at the Federal High Court. Whoever the Court says owns the mines, becomes the bona fide owner after the judgement has been delivered. But between now and the outcome of the court, we do not want to see anybody – I mean anybody – in that property.”

He directed the Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr. Johnson Kokumo and other security operatives to make sure that there are no operations at the mine site “until the outcome of the suit, or pending further instructions from the supervisory ministry which is the Federal Ministry of Mines.”

Noting that the state government is not taking any sides on the matter because the issue in contention doesn’t fall within the jurisdiction of the state as mining is on the exclusive list, he said, “I want to state clearly that it is in the interest of all parties to ensure that there is the rule of law, because that is the only way they can protect their investments.

“Please note, effective today, everybody must move out of Obu mines, which is to be shut until the declaration of the suit which is currently at the court.”

Noting that the state government was committed to the protection of lives and property, even as it seeks for investors, he added, “We want to assure that as a government, we are committed to the protection of lives and property. No amount is worth any life. Yes, we want investors and investment, but people must be alive to benefit from this investment. We feel that that it is rather unfortunate that this matter has degenerated to this extent, but as a responsible government, we will do whatever is necessary to ensure that we remedy the situation. We hope that the contending parties will do what is right and in their own interest, follow due process.”

Legal counsel to the Okpella community, Dr. Ayuba Giwa said that the people of Okpella are happy about the governor’s investment drive as well as his infrastructural strides in his first year in office.

Noting that the visit was to submit a copy of the letter sent to the presidency on the lingering issue between Dangote Group Plc and BUA International Limited over the ownership of Obu Mines in their community, Giwa said that above all else, the community wants peace to reign, as they are ready to accommodate all investors.

He condemned the use of youth militias to protect perceived rights to solid minerals, pleading with the state government to constitute a technical team to resolve the issue.

In the letter, the community appealed to the Presidency to do justice to all parties on the matter including and particularly Okpella, “where the host community of Komunio belongs and in accordance with the Ministry of Mines and Steel’s new template for processing of consent for the acquisition of minerals rights/titles in Nigeria, the mandatory requirements of Community Development Agreements (CDAs) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (EISAs) as pre-requisites to legal operations in the solid mineral regime in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Corps member helps 129 indigent pupils

Teachers and less privileged pupils of Ogiemwanbor and Akugbe Primary Schools, Oka, Ikpoba Local Government Council Area of Edo State will remain grateful to a National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) member, Ibrahim Yusuff, for donating stationeries for their use.

The 2016 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps member donated hundreds of educational materials such as  exercise notebooks, biros, pencils and rulers to 129 less privileged pupils of the schools.

Each of the beneficiaries, who were selected by their class teachers from primary one to six, received five copies of 80-leave notebooks, biro, pencil and a ruler from the corps member.

Yusuff, a graduate of English Studies from the University of Lagos, said the gesture was his personal community development service to his host community to contribute to the educational pursuit of less privileged children in the community.

He said what he saw during his first visit to the school inspired him to give.

“The first time I came to this school, I was deeply touched by the pathetic condition of some pupils here. I saw some sitting on the bare floor to receive classes. I saw some wearing tattered uniforms while some did not even have writing materials. Therefore, I took it upon myself to see how I could assist these pupils before completing my national service.

“Today, I feel fulfilled for achieving this goal. I want to implore you to make proper use of these materials and also assist the needy in the society whenever you have the opportunity to do so,” he said.

Praising the gesture, Head Teacher of Ogiemwanbor Primary School, Mrs Veronica Isege, described Yusuf as God-sent. The joyous school head, urged other corps members in the state to emulate him.

“As you have decided to support these children with these instructional materials, May the Almighty God also bless you. None of us including the pupils know you from anywhere. You came and after seeing the condition of some of the children, you decided to assist them. This is the first time a corps member would do this in this school. Many corps members have served in this state but none has done a project like this in this school, so we really thank and appreciate you for your kind gesture. As you finish your service may you get a good job.” She said.

On her part, the Head Teacher of Akugbe Primary School Oka, Mrs Doris Ugowe said Yussuff’s gesture reflected his passion for education.

Mass defection looms in Edo PDP

Some members of the People’s Democratic Party in Edo State have opted to leave the PDP over selection of delegates that voted at the just concluded elective congress of the party where Uche Secondus emerged as the National Chairman of the party.

The grouse of the members is the manner delegates from the state were allegedly selected without their inputs.

A leader of the PDP in Akoko-Edo local government and former Federal Commissioner in the Public Complaints Commission, Chief Oladele Bankole-Balogun took the lead on Monday when he announced his resignation from the PDP.

In a letter addressed to State Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, Chief Bankole-Balogun said he realised that his status in the party was made lip service.

He stated that as he watched the convention, he saw the level of lack of recognition for the efforts, contribution and personal sacrifices he made for the party.

Chief Balogun said he still made huge financial contributions to the 2016 governorship elections in the state despite the party’s absence in his struggles at the law court to reclaim his mandate.

His words, “I consider it outrageous to have to find out that a National delegate to a convention is taken from my area without my input. This singular act brings into question my relevance within the party.

“I have therefore come to the decision to resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect.”

But Chief Orbih who rejected the resignation of Chief Balogun said the PDP looked forward to a robust relationship with him.

Orbih’s reply reads, “I received a text message from you on the 9th of Dec.2017 informing me of your resignation from the party as a result of your non-participation in the process that led to the election of a national delegate from your Local government Area. I am informed that at the time of the delegates’ election you were not home because of some urgent personal issues that required your attention.

“The Party appreciates your contribution to our efforts in building a strong membership in AkokoEdo LGA and here by reject your resignation notification.”

  • DPR seals four petrol stations for price hike

DPR seals four petrol stations for price hike

Officials of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has sealed up four filling stations in Edo State for selling premium motor spirit otherwise known as fuel above government official approved prices of N145 per litre.

The sealing of the filing stations followed outcry by members of the public that most filling stations were dispensing fuel at prices as much as N160 per litre.

Affected filling stations were Foadal Oil at Airport road, St Taye Oil and Gas at New Benin, Asoline at Sapele road, Raptor oil and NIPCO Oil both at Upper Mission road.

Mr Enelama Victor, Head of Downstream, DPR Benin Zone who led the operation around parts of Benin City; the Edo state capital said the current hike in prices of PMS was due to the unwholesome activities of racketeers and middlemen hoarding the products so as to tarnish the image of the federal government.

Enelama said the federal government has not increase the price of fuel and that the distribution chain of the products by DPR was still being maintained.

He added that fuel is still being loaded to all the depots across the country.

The Benin DPR boss stated that his department was tackling the menace of racketeers and middlemen merchants in the industry which included the withdrawal of licences from marketers who engage in product hoarding and other unwholesome practices.

He assured that government would ensure that the distribution chain of petroleum products were not altered by marketers and cautioned motorists and other consumers not to engage in panic buying.

  • Omorotionmwan’s futile efforts to wrestle against Obaseki’s achievements

Omorotionmwan’s futile efforts to wrestle against Obaseki’s achievements

Our attention has been drawn to the rendition of falsehood by a certain Josef Omorotionmwan, which was published on page 31 of the Vanguard Newspaper of Thursday November 30, 2017, with the title ‘The Obaseki Administration: Wake and See What?’

While Omorotionmwan’s insidious motive to turn truth is on its head is evident right from his faulty start, we are compelled to correct his tirade that was designed to misinform the good people of Nigeria and Edo State and cast aspersions on Governor Godwin Obaseki.

To begin with, Omorotionmwan’s intemperate criticism of an administration that has been adjudged transparent, goal-oriented and committed to the welfare of the downtrodden shows a clear lack of capacity to appreciate the hallmarks of good governance.

His philosophy of good governance must have been formed in the era when public good was subordinated to the interests of a few individuals that converged to exploit the majority of Edo people and shared our common patrimony that ought to have been used to build enduring infra and superstructures for robust socio-economic growth and development.

For the first time in the history of party politics in Nigeria, Governor Godwin Obaseki appointed his 192 Special Assistants from the 192 wards in the state and they were all nominated by their respective wards and screened by the All Progressives Congress (APC) party structure in the state.

Today, the 192 aides are integral part of the decision making and execution machinery of the APC-led government of Edo State. So one would wonder what Omorotionmwan meant by the expression ‘leaving the party behind and planning to buy them at the appropriate time’ in his article. It is either his memory has been held hostage by senile forces or he derives pleasure in dispensing falsehood.

It is ridiculous to even contemplate that APC as presently constituted in Edo State can be bought by anyone. Against all odds, including the deep pockets of the People’s Democratic (PDP), members of the APC dislodged PDP from Edo State, not for bread or butter, but because we were committed to the redemption of Edo people from a cabal that foisted poverty on our people  due to their excellent skills for grand looting.

All the organs of the All Progressives Congress-led administration in Edo State are working together daily, to deliver the real dividends of democracy to Edo People.

When Omorotionmwan claimed in his article that: “In scoring Obaseki’s administration abysmally low, we are not unmindful of the fact that all the feats recorded in its favour are easily achievable by any of the 18 local government councils in Edo State,”  it is unclear what achievements he was referring to.

The ‘Wake and See’ sobriquet of Obaseki was coined by the Edo people who still marvel at the pace at which road and other developmental projects are being delivered across Edo State. Could the local council have embarked on a N200billion Benin Industrial Park project? Could the councils have embarked on a 60,000 metric tonnes Fertiliser and Chemical Plant?

Omorotionmwan’s reasoning is pure treachery to say the least, which must not stand, amongst right thinking men and women.

He claimed that The Government House has become a trade post for Obaseki’s friends from Lagos and elsewhere. Omorotionmwan surely hates Edo State and her people so much, that he wishes we do not make progress through collaborations and partnerships with the private sector, bilateral and multilateral institutions that are driving economic growth in other climes.

He wants the OBSERVER Newspapers to remain as it is even when he does not buy copies of the newspaper himself. He abhors the planned reforms for Edo Broadcasting Service that will transform the media house into a world-class institution that will make it compete with the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) in educating and mobilising our people towards growth and development. It is his desire that we retain near moribund enterprises as they are, without injecting a lease of life into them.

Omorotionmwan does not have to turn himself into an uninvited interloper in the relationship between the former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Governor Obaseki, over the Central Hospital project in Benin City. Such old tactics of inciting people against themselves does not work even for low intelligent people, how much more, clear headed and visionary leaders like the governor and his predecessor. Oshiomhole has reiterated times without number that both leaders (himself and governor Obaseki) are one, share same vision to transform Edo State, though their leadership styles may be different.

Obaseki’s rising profile locally and internationally was earned through hard work and dedication to duty as well as his respect for constituted authority.

That he is an astute manager of men and material resources has been acknowledged even by members of the opposition political parties who have in many fora, owned up to the fact that only an efficient manager like Obaseki could have steered the state safely through the turbulent condition created by the terrible recession from which the country is now emerging and still embark on delivering ambitious developmental projects like he has done in the last one year.

We are however not entirely at sea as to what would have driven Omorotionmwan to such desperate measures of dispensing outright falsehood just to get the attention of Obaseki’s government. He may, like some other indolent actors in the polity, have been hugely disappointed by Obaseki who as a matter of policy does not distribute Edo people’s collective patrimony to the kinds of ‘politicians’ who Omorotionmwan suggested in his piece to have been shut out of Government House.

For the umpteenth time, we wish to remind Omorotionmwan that being a politician does not render anyone incapacitated and unable to earn an honest living through hard work.

If Omorotionmwan will only acknowledge Obaseki’s sterling performance when he is paid money that he has not worked for, then Obaseki is willing to make do with the approval of the over  four million other Edo people who toil daily for their livelihoods.

For the records, Governor Obaseki, in one year, has done what several governors could not do in eight years. He has delivered several road projects across the state, the Edo Fertiliser and Chemical Company is up and running, he has flagged off the construction of the Benin Industrial Park, the Benin Science and Technical College, 75 mass transit buses have been procured to change the face of intra-state transportation in the state and thousands of jobs have been created in the various sectors.

The Edo Development and Property Authority has commenced the implementation of reforms that will restore sanity in the state-owned housing estates while several public schools are in the process of being reconstructed in the coming months. The design of the 20 new mini stadia in Edo State has been done and on completion, will serve as platforms for discovering and developing sporting talent across the state. Space will constrain me to mention several other developmental efforts for which Obaseki is now fondly called the Wake and See Governor by his people.

Edo creates 30,000 jobs in one year

Edo State Government said it has created 30,000 jobs in the last one year.

It said beneficiaries of the jobs were drawn from the over 190,000 unemployed persons registered under the Edo Jobs Initiative.
