PDP to NBA, others: Call Oshiomhole to order

The People’s Democratic Party in Edo State has urged the Nigeria Bar Association and the international community to call Governor Adams Oshiomhole to order.

It said the will of Edo people should be allowed to be freely expressed and the outcome of Wednesday governorship election accepted by all.

The PDP also call on all promoters of democracy to impress on the federal government to direct all organs responsible for the conduct of the Edo election to ensure that the election is not compromised directly or indirectly, before, during and after.

A letter to the President of NBA and copied to several international organizations, the PDP urged the federal government to demonstrate good sportsmanship, having recently been a beneficiary of an election conducted by an incumbent administration.

The letter signed by State Publicity Secretary of the party, Chris Nehikhare accused Oshiomhole of deploying the police, the Attorney-General’s Office, and the State Revenue Service to harass, arrest and persecution of leaders of the PDP.

Nehikhare alleged that Oshiomhole opted to deploy the state agencies having realized that it had not perfected its plan to rig against its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

He said the state government has dragged the State PDP to court over non-payment of tax by staff of the PDP Secretariat.

His words, “The State Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, who apparently is the prime target of the litigation is mentioned as the defendant. The APC led government wants Chief Orbih remanded in prison custody during the remaining period of the campaign and on Election Day.

“We see the disingenuous attack on Chief Orbih as a calculated attempt to throw the PDP in disarray and to manipulate the minds of our teeming supporters who are in the majority among the Edo electorate. We know that this resort is an exercise in futility.

“The grand design of the APC is to subvert the will of the people and if this is not checked it may spell grave consequences for the state.”

Edo poll: REC threatens to resign

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Edo State, Mr. Sam Olumekun, has threatened to resign if there was any proof that he compromised Wednesday governorship election.

Mr. Olumekun insisted that the electoral body postponed the election because there was no security cover for electoral officials.

He spoke at a stakeholders meeting in Benin City.

The Edo REC denied allegations that the electoral body was out to do the bidding of a particularly and urged political parties to go out and convince people to vote for them.

He opined that the election should not made politicians turned the state into a war zone.

Olumekun informed the political parties that the commission would on Monday September 26, begin distribution of sensitive materials for the conduct of the Edo election.

He urged political parties to send their agents to the Central Bank of Nigeria in Benin City to monitor the distribution of the materials.

Olumekun noted that the presence of party agents at the distribution venue was to make sure that the ballot papers were not tampered with.

The Edo REC warned that those authorized to be at CBN were security operatives, party agents and collation officers.

His words, “For those politicians saying we postpone election, will you allow me to send your children to conduct election without security?

“Go and convince the people to vote for your party. INEC will not do anybody’s bidding. We are interested on who Edo people will choose as their leader.”

The newly Police Commissioner in Edo, Mr Haliru Abubakar Gwandu, debunked PDP allegations that he was in the state to do the biddings of a political party.

Gwandu promised to provide a level playing field for all political parties and
appealed to political parties to eschew violence and intimidation of electoral officials and ad-hoc staff.

He urged the people to stop seeing election as a do-or-die affair, adding that those who wants to invite thugs from neighbouring state should shun that act as security men are on ground.

Group lambasts Wike, Okowa over Edo poll

A sociology-political group, the Niger-Delta Alliance for Good Governance (NDAFGG) has vowed not to resist alleged plots by Governors Nyesome Wike and Ifeanyi Okowa of Rivers and Delta states to rig the September 28 governorship election in Edo state.

It said Edo would not return to the days of People’s Democratic Party where the state was rule from Okada Avenue and the state wealth shared among cronies.

The group noted that it was disheartening that both Governors Wike and Okowa could not pay workers’ salaries but doled out  N2bn to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to bribe voters.

President of the Group, Mr. Nosa Omorogie, in a press statement said the NDAFGG has received reports about plans to rig the Edo state governorship election in favour of the PDP candidate.

Omorogie stated that it was painful that rather than for Wike and Okowa to face their state’s businesses, they have resorted to fighting Edo people by making Edo election do or die just as they did in their states.

“We know that they are yet to get over their failed plans as a result of postponement of the election which they had already perfected to rig with the importation of militants.

“We also received reports that there are plans by the PDP to disrupt with heavy armed men polling units where the All Progressives Congress, APC have strongholds across the state and create chaos.

“Edo people must reject them. Edo is not like Delta or River state where the governors have refused to pay workers even with the huge resources they receive from both internally Generated Revenues and the Federal allocation.

“Edo is working, the people can attest to it. Any attempt by people in guise of governors to cause mayhem in a state they know nothing of will be opposed.

“We urge all Edo citizens to be wise as the likes of Governor Wike and Okowa mean no well for the development of the state at large and its people”.

  • Edo will be a model to other states, says Obaseki

Edo will be a model to other states, says Obaseki

The Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Godwin Obaseki, said that he would make Edo, a model to be emulated by other states, in terms of development.

The Edo APC guber candidate for the Sept. 28 Governorship election, made the promise at a meeting with the Association of Salon Operators on Friday in Benin.

He said the transformation of the state which had already started under the Adams Oshiomhole-led APC government would be taken to a greater level when he is elected governor.

He said his government would not only continue with roads construction, the revolution in the educational sector and agricultural sector but will also seek ways to increase wealth creation in the state.

“We must emulate Lagos State to be a mega state. This has already started but will be move to a logical level where the state will also become a reference point to other states in the country.

“Lagos did not become what is today without hard work and consistency in governance. It has been consistent with progressives’ governors.

“Here in Edo, we want to be a able to continue from where Oshiomhole’s government will stop.

“Oshiomhole has done his best; it is left for us to carry on from where he will stop.

“As a governor, I will not be learning the rope, as I have been part of the success story of the government but we will be taking it further through human empowerment.

“Our next phase is to increase and create wealth,’’ Obaseki said.

The governorship candidate said his administration would have a human face.

He said that irrespective of party divide, his government would be for the generality of the people.

“We will be changing the face of government, where the government will simply be more responsive to the needs, yearnings and aspirations of the greater number of the people,’’ Obaseki said.

  • APGA State Executives, others defect to APC in Edo

The Publicity Secretary and Chieftain of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Edo State, Hon (Chief) Pius Okolie, with over 1,000 of his supporters, including executive members and chieftains have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Those who defected with him included, the Organising Secretary, Mr Chidi Eze; Ikpoba Okha Ward 1 Chairman, Festus Agbonlahor; Ward 2 Chairman, Uchenna Ogugba; Ward 7 Youth Leader, Pastor Peter Akeredolu; Woman Leader, Mrs Blessing Aikharaekpen; Uhunmwode Youth Leader, Godfrey Ogbarate and Chief Raymond Okpara, Ex-Officio.

Okolie, a former aspirant for House of Representatives for Oredo Constituency and House of Assembly, Ikpoba-Okha Constituency who spoke with newsmen in Benin City said his action was based on his conviction that only an APC government led by Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Hon Philip Shaibu can sustain the good works already started by the Oshiomhole’s led government.

According to him, “I believe Obaseki will consolidate on Oshiomhole’s good works and even do better.”

Okolie said the pedigree of Obaseki will live up to expectations.

He disclosed that his defection to APC would enable him contribute his quota more to the development of the state where he had lived for over 40 years.

Assuring his Igbo kinsmen that under the Godwin Obaseki led government, the enabling environment would be created for their businesses to grow, he said there would a review of the tax regime with a view to making it more people friendly.

He also assured his kinsmen that Obaseki led government would build more markets for their businesses to flourish, while urging them to vote APC during the election.

  • Leadership skills, vital in Edo election says Obaseki

Leadership skills, vital in Edo election says Obaseki

Mr Godwin Obaseki, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC has said leadership skills of individuals vying for the governorship seat of Edo state is vital in the September 28 election.

Obaseki stated this at a tour to the Benin Technical College in Benin City which he noted was donated by the Canadian government to train and produce qualified technicians in the state.

According to him, “When we got to the Benin technical college, I almost shed tears because my father used to run a furniture workshop at that place and he used to go there in the evening to take the students on practical. That school was donated by the Canadian government as a grant to Edo state in the 1970s.

“The technical college is supposed to be a place where you will be trained and taught what you are doing today. That was the idea years ago so that when modern technology comes, you will go back and improve on what you have learnt.

Obaseki recalled those days during the PDP administration where armed robbery were incessant as a result of the leadership noting that, “Leadership is very important, that is the key issue in this election. Who do we give power to, what is his background, what has he done before especially if he has been in power, what are his achievements? We must ask these questions because a leopard doesn’t changes its spot. So it is important this election is not going to be about money but our future. In the last eight years the leadership of the state has started something that the people can see. Why do we want to change what is already working?

“I know there are personal complains about the government but at least we agree that government can do roads, with time, by the grace of God, all the roads will be done.

“As the next governor, we know how to build roads, schools, we know how many we have done and those we have not done and we already have a plan over a period to ensure that the works continue.

He said aside building infrastructures across the 3 senatorial district of the state, “We want to focus now on the people; at least 65 percent is under the age of 30, we have to teach them a skill and employ more just as we have done in the last years. For us as government, we will support and ensure that the little money you make is enough to put food on your table and feed your extended family.”

  • Breastfeeding: Nutritionist advises employers to provide crèches

Breastfeeding: Nutritionist advises employers to provide crèches

A nutritionist, Prof. Ignatius Onimawo, has advised employers to provide crèches in their work places to support nursing mothers to practise exclusive breastfeeding for six months.

Onimawo, the Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo state, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said employers should look at the international policy on crèches and implement same in the country.

“The international policy says any employer that has more than 50 people should provide a crèche where a woman can always take care of the child and breastfeed him or her on demand.

“All these come to play if we want to improve breastfeeding rate in the country,’’ the expert said.

Onimawo, who is also a former President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, said awareness on breastfeeding was not enough in the country.

He advised medical workers to educate nursing mothers on the need to embrace exclusive breastfeeding for their babies.

“Some nursing mothers give excuse that they are career women but that should not be an excuse for not breastfeeding because there are ways of doing it.

“Breast milk can be expressed even if it is not stored in the fridge; it is healthy, so people need to know that breast milk can be expressed while the mother is at work.

“Mothers need to know that breast milk contains more than 80 per cent water. The child doesn’t need water while being breastfed,’’ he said.

Onimawo said there were a lot of advantages of practising exclusive breastfeeding for the baby and the mother.

“Exclusive breastfeeding will make the child to be healthy and he or she will be more intelligent.

“ The mother of the child will visit clinic less because the health of the mother will improve and the mother is not likely to develop loop that can lead to breast cancer.

“So, there are so many advantages and when the mother knows about this; on her own, she will begin to practise it,’’ he said.

In addition, Onimawo urged Nigerians to eat balanced diet.

“Our diets are heavily carbohydrate and too much of it is not good for human nutrition.

“We should include vegetables and fruits in our diets to increase our nutrients,’’ he said.

  • Ondo professionals to Mimiko: Account for N3trn

Ondo professionals to Mimiko: Account for N3trn

The League of Ondo Professionals in Edo State has urged Governor Olusegun Mimiko to explain how his administration expended N3trn collected from the federation account since 2008.

It said there was no meaningful development in Ondo State despite the huge resources that accrued to the state.

The group also hailed the election of Rotimi Akeredolu as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress.

It said its decision to support Akeredolu was because of the belief that that he has the capacity to deliver the people of Ondo State from the miserable and lamentable life they found themselves under the People’s Democratic Party.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of its quarterly meeting h
Ed in Benin City and signed by the group Chairman and Secretary, Dr. Ibikunle Falana and Mr. Francis Oke respectively.

The communique reads in parts, “The present Mimiko government had no vision to create jobs or empower the jobless youths who are now posing security risk to their own people.

“The present administration squandered all the federal allocations without any meaningful developments.”

The Ondo Professionals praised APC delegates for shunning monetary inducement by voting for Akeredolu who it said could turn situation of things around in the state.

  • Need for continuity in Edo State

The people of Edo State will go to the polls to choose Adam Oshiomhole’s successor on September 10,2016. The campaigns have reached a crescendo as the two major candidates, Obaseki and Iyamu are selling their parties.

Edo people don’t need to search far before making up their minds on who among the candidates to vote for.

Apart from the fact that  Godwin Obaseki who is flying the banner of the APC has a good head start because Oshiomhole  has given him a lot to market in terms of achievements, the electorates are not sure who the authentic candidate of the  PDP is between Pastor Ize Iyamu of the Markarfi led faction and Matthew Iduoriyekemwen of the Ali Modu Sheriff faction. Only the courts could decide and this is enough reason for the electorates to vote for the candidate whose candidacy is sure, and whose party has transformed the state in the last seven years.

Considering the antecedents of the two parties in the state, there is no gain saying the fact that Edo State should borrow a leaf from Lagos where an unbroken chain of progressive governments  make it the most economically viable state in Nigeria, increasing her IGR from a meagre N600 million in 1999 to an average of N23 billion in 2016 with a plan to hit N30billion monthly in 2017 and 50billion in 2018.

The governor of Edo State in 1999, Lucky Igbinedion spent two terms and left the state in ruins. When Lucky’s father, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion  was campaigning for the re-election of his son in 2003, Edo people told him point blank that his son didn’t do well in office but the Senior Igbinedion told them in pidgin, Pickin wey no do well for one class must repeat that class’ meaning if a child fails in one class, that child must repeat the class so he wanted his son to be re-elected despite his woeful performance in office. Lucky was re-elected through the usual PDP magic and Edo State was the worse for it. Professor  Oserheimen Osunbor succeeded Lucky Igbinedion after rigging out Adams Oshiomhole in 2007 but the Court of Appeal overturned his victory and declared Oshiomhole the actual winner on November 12, 2008.

While agreeing that the period Osunbor spent as governor of Edo State (May 29, 2007 to Nov 12, 2008) was so short for proper assessment, the fact remains that no meaningful achievement would have been recorded by his administration even if it had not been terminated by a judicial hammer. As Prof. Osunbor noted on why he left the PDP, “PDP has no interest in what becomes of the state and the people, but their pockets. This was why they said I was not loyal because I refused to share the money meant to develop the state while I was the governor. That was why they started fighting me”. Osunbor meant well for Edo people but the hawks who surrounded him in his party wouldn’t have allowed him to work. It was the same Mafia that the comrade governor fought to a stand-still before he could rescue Edo state from the jaws of these vampires!

There is no need for further proof that the PDP as a party never meant well for the state. Edo State should not lose her opportunity of voting for continuity as they have tested both parties and can conclude which party had actually done better in terms of human capital development and infrastructure. Yorubas would say “oti gbepo wo, oti gbomi wo, o ti mon eyi to wuwo ju” (you have lifted water and you have also lifted palm oil so you know which is heavier)Edo people should  know by now that any break from the present progressive government will spell doom for the state.

What has Oshiomhole done in eight years to make continuity in Edo imperative? Oshiomhole inherited a state in ruins and total infrastructure collapse in November 2008. The rot was especially visible in the education sector, with the reign of miracle centres known for awarding undeserved grades to students for a fee. Oshiomhole embarked on surgical operation of the education sector and it was successful because the state that used to be graded 30th position in performance at national examinations has now moved to the 2nd position. Edo is tuition free for both primary and secondary school students while buses were provided for school children. This has encouraged school enrolment and learning.

Oshiomhole excelled in massive construction of roads  in the state capital and all the major towns down to the remotest village in Benin. It is obvious even to the blind, that road network in Benin and other parts of the state has greatly improved. Oshiomhole created a conducive environment for investment such that Edo state became a haven for investors. The budgeting system was remodelled such that capital expenditure was given priority unlike in the past when recurrent expenditure was higher. The result of this are the projects spread across the state.

This has attracted many other businesses such as the bamboo wood furniture company in Anegbete, ceramics tiles company in Benin City and Yongxing steel company which have recruited and trained  over 1,500 youths who are now gainfully employed. In the area of sports, the  Okpekpe road race became an international event recognised by the International Athletics Federation. This has boosted the economy of local residents each time the event was hosted.

Oshiomhole transformed the Ambrose Alli University at Ekpoma and made it a true citadel of learning. He  built and commissioned three lecture theatres, two world class laboratories for medical and sciences students, completion of the moot court that was abandoned in 1991,  the agriculture extension services department, the Fine and Applied Arts department, and the Building department while a European Union sponsored dam that was abandoned was resuscitated.  The monthly subvention of the University was increased from N100m to N250m even as many projects are still ongoing in the University. He equally increased the monthly subvention of other higher institutions in the state.

When other oil producing states are owing workers salaries running into six months, Oshiomhole is not only paying salaries promptly, but he has almost completed building a brand new Edo State University located at Iyamo which can compete with any other university in the world. The administration supported the security agencies with funds, gadgets and vehicles to enable them discharge their functions properly and this drastically reduced crime rate in the state. There is massive transformation in the health sector as hospitals were upgraded and rehabilitated across the state while the multi million naira Central Hospital along Sapele Road in Benin is of international standard.

Water has been provided all over Edo State through boreholes and this has greatly reduced water borne diseases. To ensure a solid foundation for strong institutions, the Bureau of Internal Revenue was strengthened, the Public Procurement Law was enacted and there was criminal justice reforms. In a bid to take as many unemployed youths as possible off the street through commercial agriculture, about 150 hectares of land was given to private investors to undertake commercial farming. The private investors who the government is monitoring as they do soil test, area mappping and clearing, will in turn employ Edo youths and train them in many areas of commercial farming. They will also man the tractors. This is the more reason why there should be continuity as this great idea should not be allowed to die if there is a change of government. This is what Ekiti State is suffering today when a hard-working and visionary governor was voted out.

There is thus enough reasons why the electorate should ensure that Oshiomhole good works in the state continue through Obaseki who had been the head of the economic team in the last seven years attracting funds to the state while his running mate, Shuaibu a member of the House of Representatives representing Etsako Federal Constituency was a member of the Edo State House of Assembly who had  helped the government to stabilise the House of Assembly as the Majority Leader.

Obaseki’s choice as a successor comes handy in this period of economic recession as he combines political value with the capacity  to manage resources in difficult times. This combination is good for continuity and there is no doubt that Edo people will be the gainers if they vote APC on September 10.
