Buhari wades into Edo APC crisis

There were indications Thursday that President Muhammadu Buhari may have directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir David Lawal to interface with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Edo state with a view to resolving the crisis in the party.

Sources close to the party told journalists that the President has asked the SGF to meet with all the aspirants in the last governorship primaries and other stakeholders within 24 hours.

The Edo State APC governorship primaries which was held on June 18 and won by Mr. Godwin Obaseki is being challenged by two of the aspirants who alleged irregularities in the conduct of the primary.

In his petitions to the Appeals Committee, Ogiemwonyi alleged over voting at the primaries, while Imansuagbon claimed that the primary was rigged electronically.

It was gathered that the two aggrieved aspirants have threatened to drag the party to court if they fail to nullify the primary.

The source said, “The two aggrieved aspirants are waiting the recommendation of the Committee, threatening to go to court and work against the party in the event of any last minutes endorsement”.

Chairman of the Primary Committee and  governor of Katsina, Aminu Bello Masari who was invited to appear before the committee was said to have been represented by a Director at the National Secretariat of the party.

Chairman of the Appeal Committee, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele stated that the committee was compiling its recommendations, adding that all the stakeholders invited met with the Committee members and made oral presentations of the primaries.

He however deny knowledge of the proposed meeting between the aspirants and the SGF.

  • Edo APC primaries: We’ll be fair to all —Masari

Edo APC primaries: We’ll be fair to all —Masari

Governor Amiu Mansari, Chairman of the Committee deployed in Edo State by the national body of the All Progressives Congress to conduct the June 18 gubernatorial election of the party in the State has promised that it will be fair to all aspirants in the election.

On his part, Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State called on the Committee to ensure that the same rules which produced a successful primary election in Kogi State are used in the Edo APC primary election.

Speaking yesterday during a courtesy visit of the Committee to Governor Oshiomhole in his office, Alhaji Masari said “we are here to conduct primaries for those who are contesting to be the next governor of Edo State. We will abide by the guidelines of the party, and we also assure all aspirants that we will be just and fair to all. We are not angels, but certainly we hope, that by the time we finish, the appeal committee will have no work because if truly the candidates are interested in the state, in the party and in the country, we assure them that the outcome will be an outcome that will stand the test of time. I hope that all they are doing is in the interest of Edo State, and they know that out of the twelve, only one must emerge.

“So, the process has been laid down, and I hope they will comply with the process as well. And we assure them that we will do justice to all. We hope they will cooperate in the best interest of the people of Edo State and Nigeria. I intend to meet them this evening and rub minds with them and ensure they are more conversant with the guidelines, the rules. I will hear them out, and we will certainly come out with an acceptable position. And I hope there won’t be any violence because if there is anything that can mar primaries or elections it is violence. Anybody who is not satisfied, the party has laid down guidelines on the issues of petitions, complaints.

Responding, Governor Adams Oshiomhole who welcomed members the committee to Edo State said, “We are confident that the national secretariat couldn’t have had a better person to provide leadership for democratic exercise. Let me also appreciate you for coming along with very senior members of the government of Katsina State. By their level, there is no question that you have a very strong supportive crew that will ensure the assignment is made much easier for you.”

He said, “On my part, my own task is very simple. It is to ensure that, as they call us, as chief security officers, that there is full security certainly for your Excellency and members of your committee and delegation, but also there is security for all the aspirants and all the delegates and accredited agents of aspirants. We have had very peaceful elections in the past when we were even the underdogs. We have no history of spilling blood for election purpose. Even when the party that is notorious for violence, the PDP was in charge at the federal level, we were able to manage. Even when they harassed us, we concentrated on persuading our people, and we have continued to prevail.”

Oshiomhole continued, “For me, therefore, like I told the aspirants when I met them three days ago, I said this should be our finest hour in Edo State. This is the only time we are going to have an election when our own party is at the federal level.”

According to Governor Oshiomhole, “We have had a very bad press in the past few weeks mostly arising from false alarm and distorted story and half truths here and there. But I had a very interesting engagement with the aspirants, and I assured them, and your coming today has confirmed that, that under the party constitution it is the national secretariat that will appoint those who will superintend over the conduct of the primaries, and therefore, the governor’s bias or alleged bias is therefore of no consequence. And so, people should be rest assured of a level playing field, and by the time people hear that the committee is headed by a governor, at least nobody is going to accuse a governor of being bribed.

Oshiomhole said “the only thing I hope is that our party must ensure that regardless of our individual interest like you said, the process is what matters. And talking about process is to talk about rules. The rules for the conduct of Edo primaries should not be different from the same rules that were used in Kogi State which we are all familiar with, including the rules of accreditation so that we don’t open the window for people to manipulate and create doubtful criteria. Once the rules are the same as we have known them, there should be no problem, but if you change rules from station to station, then there will be issues as to why we are you bending the rules here. When the goal post remains where it is, all players regardless of the team they belong to know that this is the goal post, and if you want to score, you know where to aim at.”

He added, “I want to assure you that everything will be done to complement your effort and ensure that your assignment is easy.”

Other members of the Masari Committee are Shuaibu Musa, Former National Financial Secretary of the APC, Rt Hon Babangida Nguroje, former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Babangida Pate and Hon Azeez Mohammed.

Also on the Governor’s entourage were Mustapha Mohammed Inuwa, Secretary to Katsina State Government, Bello Mandiya, Chief of Staff, among others.

Edo PDP aspirant denies EFCC arrest

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu Campaign Organization Friday denied the arrest by Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) as reported by some National Daily.

The campaign organization said, “our attention has been drawn to a false and wicked propaganda which has been circulating on social media that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has been arrested by the EFCC.

“Ordinarily, we would not react to such rumour sponsored by political upstarts within and outside who are worried at the massive support our campaign is gaining among the people of Edo state, but because The Nation newspaper, which ought to be a responsible newspaper, published the false report in their today issue, we have decided to respond to prevent a false propaganda to be mistaken for fact.

“We wish to state unequivocally that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu was not called neither was he arrested by the EFCC because his hands are clean. ‎

“We call on all our teaming supporters across Edo state, especially the very conscious PDP delegates to disregard such news fabricated by those who through fear of the emergence of Ize-Iyamu and his eventual victory at the polls have made themselves captives of the unknown but continue to support us in a bid to vacate the APC from Edo state and begin a process of repositioning our state through transparent, effective and accountable governance that will improve the living standards and social wellbeing of our people. This is our priority and we would not entertain any distraction from those unprepared and unfit to lead in such a time as this.”

Edo APC Primary: Play by the rules, Group tells aspirants

Ahead of Saturday’s governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in Edo state, an interest group under the aegis of N ‘Edo gheria has urged aspirants to go about campaigning rather than casting aspersion on personalities of other contestants.

In a statement made available to news men in Benin by the state coordinator, Agene Patrick said rather than indulge in winning delegates, some campaign organization have resorted to maligning other aspirants.

It said while making reference to a particular publication by a campaign organisation that it would do every one in the contest good if they all go about selling their manifestos to delegates rather than fationalizing supporters of the party

It read in part “This is a height of desperation. At this time, desperate people would hang perilously to the last straw, no matter how ludicrous their views might be. Why else would Abubakar Yusuf be walking logic on its head by asserting that a victory for some aspirants would further polarize the APC.

“A man who asserts that ‘Odubu’s 16 years in government and Obaseki’s 7 years as head of the Economic Team show they have both reached their zenith in government’ admits that amateurism on the part of Ogiemwonyi is a prescription for good governance.

“Yusuf is at war with himself when he concludes, ‘Ogiemwonyi is the tested and trusted technocrat to succeed Comrade Oshiomhole’

“We marvel at the double standard that makes experience useful when it comes to Ogiemwonyi, but useless when it concerns other aspirants.

“Yusuf would do well to advise his principal to go and canvass for votes instead of seeking cheap popularity and short cuts,” It concluded.

  • Edo State: One goof too many

Edo State: One goof too many

Not too long ago, the Comrade Governor, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole of Edo State, uncharacteristically went into a fit of “semantics” overdrive by casting the departed Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa, in a demolition raiment against the general notion that the late oba was the repository of peace, concord, amity and sustainable development that enveloped Edo State since March 23, 1979, when the late oba ascended the throne of his forefathers. Oshiomhole had, in a moment of executive over-exuberance, erroneously conferred on the revered monarch a parting but demonising appellation of an “iconoclast.”

The governor was obviously carried away by the high-sounding elegiac word, specially chosen to wave good bye to his mentor of almost eight years.  However, what the comrade did not bargain for was that an “icon” (which he intended to use) can never be an “iconoclast” which unintentionally crept into his highly-obsequious condolence message. It was clear that semantic diarrhoea, as exemplified by his Chief of Staff, Patrick Obahiagbon’s volcanic grammatical vituperations (those high-falutin words again!), has gradually crept into the governor’s speech-writer’s diction.

Immediately the condolence message hit the airwaves, it attracted serious reaction from well-meaning people who thought that the governor had goofed. They accused the governor of scooping more than he could swallow from the Alphabet Soup! Exactly 25 days after that onomatopoeic confusion of transposing “iconoclastic” for icon, Oshiomhole shot himself on the foot again.  Last week, he added another faux pas. Precisely, in a fit of executive malfeasance, the governor, by executive fiat, sent an unprecedented “Letter of Appointment” to the new Edaiken N’Uselu, upgrading and promoting him to the Obaship of the centuries-old Benin traditional stool, as if the throne is an integral part of the state’s civil service.

As unknown and sacrilegious as this action may seem, the official “Letter of Appointment” dated May 24, 2016, purports to be one of the “lasting legacies” that Oshiomhole intends to bequeath to posterity while belittling the mystique, awe and respect the prime traditional and cultural entrepot of the Benin people, attracts within both the Nigerian nation and the African Continent.

This precipitate action taken by Oshiomhole relegated to the back-burner, the revered tradition, norms and lores of the Benin Kingdom, which guides the ascension of the most senior son of the departed monarch in a graduated process, from the position of Crown Prince to the Edaiken N’Uselu and then to the Obaship in a seamless mode devoid of any government interference, legitimisation or imposition. In fact, the throne is the cradle of the first son of an incumbent Oba of Benin. The tutorials begin at birth until coronation with no roles reserved for any politician or political organisation.

It is conventional wisdom that the Edo State government or any government at all, does not play any role or function in the choice of the Oba of Benin, except the presentation of a staff of office to the new Imperial Majesty, after the rites of coronation have been completed.  In fact, the presentation is a ceremonial one that can be termed a hollow ritual that has no traditional relevance or importance.  With or without a staff of office, the trajectory of a Crown Prince is known the day he is born and does not need the presentation of a government’s appointment letter to energise or legitimise the new Obaship of Benin Kingdom.

Political pundits believe that the series of anti-tradition happenings in Benin kingdom point to one and only one direction; the ambition of one man to install a successor at all costs. It probably began with the “treasonable” coronation of Chief Richard Arisco Osemwingie as the surrogate Ogiamen of Utantan Benin nation instead of the missing holder. Then the attendant attempt to balkanise a section of Oredo Local Government Area by Arisco and his cohorts. Others are: the incessant media war orchestrated by the rebel Utantan group with the publishing of a newspaper, Ogiamen Trumpet; the sudden emergence of the hitherto reticent Elawure of Usen, with an “Independence Doctrine “and a new traditional nomenclature that bespeaks his new status; the sudden claim to governorship by Godwin Obaseki on an alleged Governor Oshiomhole’s sponsorship and mentorship and the resultant season of resentment from a concerned section of the Benin Palace against the bid. Last on this list is the semantic misadventure of Oshiomhole in labelling the departed Oba Erediauwa an “iconoclast” instead of an “icon” which he really is, as well as the rapid, terse Appointment Letter and the “Disappointment” Letter sent to the Edaiken N’Uselu on May 24 and withdrawn on May 25, respectively. All these may have been bits and pieces of a carefully-woven and activated plot to demonise and demystify the Benin Obaship, in preparation for a Godwin Obaseki governorship which will prefer to deal with a comatose and weak royal palace in the face of the ingrained century-old animosity between the Obaseki family and the royal family.

It is also believed that the aforementioned happenings in and around the solemn traditional setting of the Benin Royal Palace, which is the engine room of the Benin Kingdom, are designed by a consummate puppeteer, to “castrate” the palace in order to gain political mileage. Perhaps, it becomes exigent as a much younger person (with a different worldview and orientation) is in the process of ascending the throne of his forefathers imbued further with new ideas, zeal, tolerance and forbearance peculiar to him.

The fire brigade approach to the resultant impasse and resentment to the issuance of the Letter of Appointment authorising the Edaiken N’Uselu, Ambassador Eheneden Erediauwa, to ascend the revered throne of the Benin Kingdom, with the government claiming that it was done in “error”, is complete hogwash. Rather, it appears the Oshiomhole administration flew a kite to test the waters of resistance, reaction and resentment of the Benin people and the Royal Palace itself, to the Letter of Appointment.

Palace sources say that the oba-designate took very strong exception to the content, intent and purport of the misguided correspondence.  It is more so, considering the fact and coincidence that the letter came from the Oshiomhole administration just as the programme of the traditional rites of passage of the departed Omo N’Edo Oba Erediauwa was released. It is crystal clear that by this executive misadventure, a curious and esoteric twist has been added to the ongoing undeclared fray to soften the turf for Oshiomhole’s anointed candidate for the September 10, governorship election.

Prior to this remarkable blunder, an online media outlet edoworld.net, had drawn a parallel that connects the departed Omo N’Oba Erediauwa with the Obaseki family, albeit spiritually, in a bid to lessen the public outrage that has attended Godwin Obaseki’s declaration for the Edo 2016 governorship election. Whatever the veracity of this packaged story, the fact remains that the entrance of Agho’s biological grandson, Godwin Obaseki, into the 2016 Edo State governorship race, is causing disquiet and unease in the Benin Royal Palace and among the citizenry.

Oshiomhole’s hidden agenda is to use Obaseki to demystify the Benin throne through an unprecedented procedure of “legitimising” the ascension of the Edaiken N’Uselu to the throne by issuing an official Letter of Appointment which will in turn empower the Oba-to-be to endorse Obaseki for the governorship of Edo State. The grain of thought within and outside the palace is that Oshiomhole wants to colonise the royal palace for selfish purposes.  It is quite unfortunate that a man, who, a short while ago, openly boasted that the era of godfathers in Edo politics is gone and gone for good, is now turning round to position himself as the new godfather of Edo politics. His desperation to strengthen his new status may be headed for a brick-wall after all. What a pity!

Tension in Edo Communities over Land Dispute

Tension is mounting between Iguomon community and their Ikhuonbo neighbour both in Uhunmwode local government area of Edo state over the ownership of a parcel of land, as Court Monday Remanded six persons from Ikhuonbo community in Prison Custody for attempted murder.

To avert a communal clash between both communities, the Iguomon community has appealed to Governor Adams Oshiomhole and security agents to wade into the issue before it was too late.

The community however expressed gratitude to the governor and the State Commissioner of Police for taking prompt action to forestall peace and orderliness in the area and reinstated its commitment to continue to operate within the ambient of the law.

Addressing journalists in Benin Monday, Vice-Chairman of Iguomon Youth Association, Mr. Stanley Osazee who gave the genesis of the crisis, said that the Ikhuonbo community have been crying wolf where non –exists, insisting that the land in question which he described as their ancestral land belongs to them.

He said, “We the people of Iguomon Community has deemed it fit to inform the general public via the media about the lingering crises and the deliberate occupation of our ancestral land by some group of people who calls themselves Ikhuonbo community in Edo State.

“Early this month, the people of Ikhuobo came to the media to mislead the general public, claiming that the good people of Iguomon community are trying to chase them away from their land and they refuse to inform the general public with the true situation on ground.

“The land in dispute is actually owned by Iguomon community, and the Benin palace validated Iguomon’s right to own the land in the past and the palace recommended that Iguomon community should give Ikhuonbo 150ft from the land.

“The people of Iguomon community went to court to seek legal interpretation, backing and the right to owned the land by dragging the people Ikhuonbo community to the Edo State High Court in Benin which ruled that Iguomon community owns the land

“Ikhuonbo appealed to the Appeal Court in Benin, which also validated the judgment of the lower court that Iguomon community owned the land. Ikhuonbo again went to the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court ruled in the year 2006 that IGUOMON community owned the land”.

The community said that as law abiding citizens, they applied for a warrant of possession after the Supreme Court judgment which was granted in the year 2013 and the warrant directed the bailiff to bring down every structure within the territory to which belongs to Iguomon as validated by the supreme court judgment.

It added that when the court went to the disputed land to enforce the court’s order, the people of IKHUONBO resisted the court’s order and shot sporadically against the security agency who accompanies the court bailiff to enforce the court order in line with the Supreme Court judgment.

The community disclosed that after the incident, Ikhuonbo community sued Iguomon community for N20million, claiming that Iguomon community has damaged their property.

They claimed that following a directive from the court that the both parties in conflict should meet with the State Surveyor General to delineate the land in accordance with the Supreme Court judgment to see if Iguomon community actually went beyond bound to enforce the court judgment, Ikhuonbo withdrew from the suit and ran to the State House of Assembly who has no jurisdiction to address matters already decided by the Supreme Court.

The Iguomon community claimed that in the month of May 2016, they again applied for a warrant of possession and the Edo state C Chief Judge granted the community a warrant of possession to take charge of the land.

They stated that while officials from the State Ministry of Land and Survey were on ground in the site and under watchful eyes of the security agents, Ikhuonbo people short sporadically on Iguomon people and injured eight unarmed Iguomon youths who sustained bullet wounds.

The community added that the State Commissioner of Police acted promptly by inviting the parties in conflict and demanded an instant investigation into the shootings just as he directed the state CID to ensure that perpetrators of the crime are prosecuted.

They said investigations by the Police led to the arrest of some people from Ikhuonbo community who were charged to the Magistrates court in Ehor.

  • Osunbor joins Edo governorship race

    Osunbor joins Edo governorship race

Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor says he will contest as governor of Edo State on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Osunbor told newsmen in Abuja on Thursday that he was back in the race by popular demand of the Edo people.

It will be recalled that Osunbor was elected governor of Edo in April 2007 but the Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal declared the election invalid on March 20, 2008.

He said during his stint in the Edo Government House, he left his footprint in the area of infrastructure, civil service reforms, health and education sectors.

“I also fought for the accreditation of 30 out of 31 degree awarding courses in the Ambrose Ali University.

“Since governance entails continuity, Oshiomhole continued with my legacies and I promise to continue from where he stopped.’’

On whether Oshiomhole had an anointed candidate, he said: “at a meeting in March, Oshiomhole publicly declared that he had no anointed candidate and I believe him even if you don’t.’’

He said although there were lots of qualified candidates in the race, Edo people should vote for the “first among equals’’, adding that he would bring his experience to bear as a professor and senator.

Osunbor brings to nine the number of aspirants vying for the Edo number one seat on the platform of the APC.

The gubernatorial primary will come up on June 18.
