•Man robs, rapes five women
Five persons including four students of Lighthouse Polytechnic in Edo State have been arrested for alleged cultism by men of the Edo State Police Command.
The four Lighthouse Polytechnic students are Patrick Rapu, Okpue Kelvin, George Ebiaye and Obodo Godwin.
One battle axe and two bottles of hot drink were found in their possession.
The fifth suspect, Isaac Emeka Asemota was arrested at Ugoneki while on a mission to assassinate three members of a rival cult gang.
A locally made pistol and five live cartridges were found on him.
Isaac, however, said he was ordered on the mission because one of their members complained that members of the rival cult gang raped his wife.
He said he was arrested by local vigilante after they got wind of their mission.
The four students did not respond to questions put before them.
One Samuel Emeka Chukwu was arrested for allegedly robbing and raping five ladies at Airport Road in Benin City, the state capital.

3,000 PDP members join APC in Edo
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former Chairman of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) in Edo State, Johnbull Asemota, NUPENG Chairman Osahon Osamuyi, 20 PDP executives in Uhumwonde Local Government Area have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Also joining the APC train are over 3,000 NUPENG members.
At a rally in Benin City, Asemota said he decided to join the APC to support Governor Adams Oshiomhole to develop the state.
Oshiomhole said: “I am happy today that many people have continued to see the developmental projects of this administration, especially Uhumwonde people.
“This man you see with me is a comrade like me and those people who separated us before now have gone and he is with us today. In fact, PDP is finished in Uhumwonde Local Government.
“I read a newspaper report last week where the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said I caused the trouble in Edo because I want to become vice-president.
“Right there in the Villa in Abuja, I told them that I am qualified to be the president because I have the qualifications, the integrity, the pedigree and the capacity to do so.
“I have commanded productive forces as Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President.
“The issue of president or vice-president is not the problem. I have a job which I applied for. I have asked for the mandate to govern Edo State and I promised to deliver on my promises even without any stated point or agenda.
“The APC government does not believe in any four-point or seven-point agenda. Ours is eye-marked and not ear-marked.
“PDP, in its desperate move to win elections by all means in 2015, has decided to buy over APC lawmakers in the House of Assembly.
“Some of the lawmakers in their bid to complete their various hotel projects sold out.
“The crisis in Edo State House of Assembly is a result of the failure of the four PDP lawmakers to obey court orders. Those who make law should not be seen breaking the law.”

PDP plans to destabilise Edo, says group
A group, the Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa (CGGEJA), has written a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene in the Edo State House of Assembly crisis. The solution to the crisis, according to the organisation, is for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to desist from fanning the embers of disunity.
The Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa (CGGEJA) has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to stop the alleged plot by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to fuel the crisis in Edo State and destabilise the government.
In its letter to the President, the group said that the plot is not in the interest of democracy, urging him to rise to the occasion as a statesman. Copies of the letter were sent to the Chief Justice of the Federation, Human Rights Commission and civil society groups. The letter was signed by a leader of the group, Mr. John Mayaki.
CGGEJA described the PDP as a destructive opposition party bent on creating chaos, noting that the state has been enveloped in anxiety, following the threats to recapture the state. It said that since the controversial defection of some All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP, more steps have been taken to divert the attention of Governor Adams Oshiomhole from governance.
The letter reads in part: “The oppostion has a role in democracy. It has a duty to keep the government on its toes. The essence of the opposition in a well-established democracy, if it is to be of benefit, is that it must be constructive as this is the strength of the opposition in the established democracies of the world. They recognize that they, together with the government of the day, proceed from the major premise that they have a joint aim; to advance the welfare of the people.
“But, what we see in Edo State in recent times is the mobilisation of the opposition party members and some disgruntled elements who want political power relinquished to them on a platter of gold to embark on the policy of obstructing the government, without devising a programme on which they would base an alternative one. Their policies have been narrow in concept and often violent, abusive and ‘terroristic’ and their first port of call is the State House of Assembly. The people of Edo state have become unwilling spectators in the unfolding drama.”
On the May 9, 2014, three members of the House of Assembly had obtained from the Federal High Court, Benin-City, an ex-parte order of interim injunction restraining the Speaker from declaring their seats vacant, pending the determination of the motion on notice. But, the court refused the prayer for an injunction restraining the applicants from being suspended from the House.
On the June 9, 2014, the House suspended four members. It also went to the court to challenge their refusal comply with the suspension. Noting that the order was not complied it, the group lamented that state agents have turned around as the enforcement wing of the PDP to aiding the recalcitrant lawmakers to invade the plennary session. Before the crisis, the House of Assembly complex was being renovated. Thus, members moved to the old complex. But, the police also blocked access to the road to the City Centre, (Ovonranwen Square), causing untold economic hardship and social dislocations for the state capital.
“In what seems like a script, the police, on the 7th of July 2014, assisted the PDP legislators to gain access into the Assembly Complex under renovation and pretended to have held plenary. This is a complete mockery of democracy and a slap on the rule of law,” the group added.
CGGEJA chided the PDP for threatening to cripple the Edo government by invoking the federal might, instead of planing the role of a legitimate opposition to the Al Progressives Congress (APC) government. It said while the Labour Party in Britain follows a political doctrine opposed to that of the Conservative Party, the PDP is relying on anti-democratic means to gain political control.
The group added: “The situation in Edo is peculiar. The opposition, which lacks popular support, is undermining the popular and people-oriented government by allegedly inducing people to defect from the ruling party and plotting the impeachment of the governor.
CGGEJA said that, despite the fact that Oshiomhole has not wage any war against the opposition, key PDP chieftains are trying to distract him from governace.
It said the crisis has implications for the state, stressing that the gains of the progress made under the Oshipmhole Administration may be wiped out.
The group said the government has changed the orientation of the people about service delivery, fought the infrastructure battle, promoted transparency and accountability and restored the glory of the state. It added that these revolutionry tendencies and push for radical change are beyond the ken and comprehension of Oshiomhole’s detractors.
It said that, in this period of our socio-economic life, old habits, political, social and economic thought should be discarded and a new political ideology of higher moral conception of public and social duty and obligation must come to the front burner.
The group said that Oshiomhole needs the cooperation of the stakeholderes to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people.
“Therefore, I humbly call on President Goodluck Jonathan, the various security agencies, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, The National Human Rights Commission, well meaning Nigerians and Edo people, both home and abroad, to prevail on those acting as clogs in the wheel of progress in our dear State to desist forthwith to forestall the breakdown of law and order,” it added.

Edo set to announce PFAs for contributory pension
The process for appointing Pension Fund Administrators (PFA) that will manage the pensions of Edo State pensioners is ongoing, The Nation has learnt.
Public Relations Officer to the State Head of Service, Sam Okpeaye, who made this known, said the PFAs will set the pace for the commencement of Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in the state.
He said plans to implement the contributory pension scheme in the state civil service were concluded last year by the Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomole adding that the successful PFAs would soon be announced.
He explained that compilation of adequate data of pensioners was part of the reasons for delay in implementing the new pension scheme.
He said efforts are also being made to pay arrears owed pensioners before the present government.
The National Pension Commission (PenCom) had said that states in the federation have continued to make progress in implementing the CPS.

Edo Assembly battle enters fifth week
•Activist sues lawmakers
The battle for the control of the Edo State House of Assembly between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) entered its fifth week today.
The police have strengthened security around the Assembly complex.
The roof of the chamber has been removed.
Attempts by armed mobile policemen to stop the renovation at the weekend failed as the 15 APC lawmakers put up a resistance.
What has raised apprehension was the vow by the nine PDP lawmakers, including impeached Deputy Speaker, Festus Ebea, to resume sitting today and the threat by the APC lawmakers to stop them.
Residents bear the brunt of the power tussle as heavy traffic congestion have been experienced on major roads around the Oba Ovoranmen Square since the crisis began.
Last week, the APC lawmakers conducted plenary at the old chamber in the Government House because of what they termed “on-going renovation work”.
The Speaker, Uyi Igbe, who was tear gassed last week by a policewoman, accused the police of working for the PDP lawmakers.
He vowed not to allow the PDP lawmakers into the assembly complex.
“The PDP lawmakers want to forcibly enter one of the rooms and we are telling them it is not possible for them to come and sit.
“We will rise against it and defend ourselves. Our blood will spill on this matter because we know we are on the right.
“ They have threatened to kill me and today will be the right time.”
PDP State Chairman Dan Orbih, at a briefing, said the nine PDP lawmakers would resume legislative business today.
Chairman of One Love Family and Caring Association Patrick Eholor has sued Igbe and the 23 other lawmakers.
Eholor said the lawmakers’ actions were “unwholesome and unbecoming”.
In the suit by his counsel, T Akahomen, the prosecutor is seeking for a declaration that the lawmakers, who sat at the Government House on July 2, breached the 1999 Constitution on the principles of separation of powers.
He is also asking for an order directing the lawmakers to refund all financial benefits they may have received from the accountant-general and commissioner for Finance (27th and 28th defendants) from June 9 to government coffers.
He asked the court to compel the 27th and 28th defendants to put on hold, any financial benefit or entitlement; including constituency allowances due to the first to 24th defendants, until they resume their duties as members of the House of Assembly.
According to the suit, “public funds are meant to service statutory services and duties. The first to 24th defendants have no justification to continue to enjoy any financial benefit of their offices.
“Nigerians who are resident in Edo State ought to enjoy the services of the 1st to 24th respondents because they came to their offices by virtue of the votes cast by the Edo people; for which they subscribed on oath.”
Eholor urged the court to direct the 27th and 28th defendants to make available the financial record of the refunds made by the lawmakers to the government and publish same in two national newspapers for record purpose.

‘We will fight with our last drop of blood’
The Impeached Deputy Speaker of Edo stae House of Assembly , Hon. Festus Ebea has said his group of nine lawmakers will resist any attempt to deny them of their rights with the last drop of their blood.
Embattled Ebea also said he is ready to resume to his position as deputy Speaker.
Reacting to his impeachment aEbea said the Speaker , Hon. Uyi Igbe was being influenced to move against him .
“They have thrown Edo state into confusion because of selfish agenda.
” Edo state does not belong to the Comrade Governor, neither does it belong to the 24 of us; people voted us in there. We must not take the people for granted.
“I have said it, if we say status ante, I am ready to go back to my deputy speakership position but when somebody begins to push Uyi Igbe to say that he must prescribe punishment to his colleagues, I would tell you that we will resist it with the last drop of our blood. “
Asked if his alleged claim of the position of Speaker is on, the Impeached Deputy Speaker, said ” Ooh, you are absolutely correct. “

Stop the madness in Edo House
For the past few weeks days, peace has taken a flight from the Edo State House of Assembly. This is not unconnected with the crisis which followed the congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. Some members of the party were aggrieved as a result of the outcome of the congress, which either did not afvour them or their political caucus.
Cross River State government took reporters round some of its legacy projects. The tour started in Calabar and terminated in Ogoja, the far end of the state which is no less than five hours away from the state capital.
Some members of the House of Assembly were wooed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into their fold. Governor Adams Oshiomhole later alleged that each of them got N50 million to defect. They have since fired back, saying the governor has earlier offered them money too to remain in the APC. They claimed to have rejected the money.
The defection has since polarised the House with the leadership suspending the defectors, who have since teamed up with other PDP members to send peace on leave. A court has ordered them to stay suspended. They have threatened to go ahead and sit claiming to have suspended their other colleagues. A new mace has even surfaced, which it has emerged was an old one stolen in 2010.
The day they ‘sat and removed’ the leadership of the House a fracas broke out when the Speaker and his colleagues stormed the floor of the Assembly. It was a hectic day for the police. And since then, hell has come down to the Edo House.
Both parties are not ready to give in. It is like fire for fire and like they say, when two elephants fight, it is the grass, which in this case is the people, that suffers. It is a funny case in which eight lawmakers are trying to play the majority.
Oshiomhole has washed his hands off the crisis. The governor’s spokesperson has said he knows nothing about the crisis.
Justice A.M. Liman ruled on June 6 that the Speaker was right in suspending the four lawmakers but that he had no right to declare their seats vacant.
Justice Liman held that: “That the disciplinary power of the House is not subject to the judicial review of the Court, accordingly the application to restrain the 2nd Respondent from suspending the applicants from the House is hereby refused”.
This ruling cleared the way for the suspension of Festus Ebea, Patrick Osayimwen, Jude Ise-Idehen and Friday Ogieriakhi.
The APC, in a statement, said: “Despite the service of the processes including the Order of Injunction on all the parties, the suspended members have continued to create tension and chaos in the House of Assembly and its environs by forcibly entering into the premises and chambers of the House of Assembly aided by numerous thugs and (rather unfortunately) officers and men of the Nigeria Police force.
“We are informed that these contemnors claim, rather erroneously, that they can act in defiance and disobedience of the positive order of Court on the ground that they are pursuing an appeal against the order.
“It is an elementary principle of our Legal System that an Order of a Court remains valid and subsisting which all parties must comply with unless and until it is set aside by the Court which issued same or a Court of Appeal.”
The court has spoken and the law should be allowed to stand. The time to stop this madness of going against the law is now.
