JUST IN: Two Edo varsity students shot dead in cult reprisal attack

Two undergraduates of Edo state government-owned, Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma have been shot dead in a cult reprisal attack.

One of the victims was an official of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the higher institution.

It was gathered on Tuesday, April 30, that the SUG’s official was a 400-level student in the Faculty of Agriculture, and was killed at the Poultry Road Extension in Ekpoma.

The killings happened barely 48 hours after one Eddy was beaten to death by a group of persons for allegedly purchasing some items with fake bank alert.

Information on Eddy’s ordeal was misconstrued for an attack by rival cult members.

Edo 2024: APC Southsouth excos strategise for victory

Executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southsouth yesterday met in Calabar, Cross River State capital, to strategise on how to win the September 21  Edo governorship election.

The meeting, which was presided over by Governor Bassey Otu, the only APC governor in the region, also discussed crucial political issues affecting the zone.

Speaking after the meeting, the Zonal Vice Chairman of the party, Mr. Victor Gaidom, said the meeting, attended by chairmen of the party from states in the zone, resolved to synergise for the success of the party in the governorship election.

“Our meeting was highly successful with very fruitful discussions. We all agreed to work for the unity of the party across the Southsouth states.

“We are taking this opportunity to issue a warning to other political parties in Edo, to let them know that APC is ready to take back governance of the state,” he said.

He hailed Otu for his achievements in Cross River, especially in the areas of environment, infrastructural renewal, foundation laying for agriculture revolution, restoration of hope and human capital development.

“It is often said to whom much is given, much is expected. We need to come together to deepen APC in the Southsouth.

“Today, Cross River State is the only APC state in the Southsouth; we want to increase that number before we go to the next general election,” he said.

The governor said APC had come to stay in Cross River and that his administration had keyed into the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, which he noted remained critical to the ‘People First’ mantra of his administration.

Violence, thuggery rock APC stakeholders’ meeting in Edo

Violence broke out on Saturday at a meeting of stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area in Edo State.

The well-attended, strategic meeting, ahead of the April 24 commencement of campaigns and September 21, 2024 governorship election, was hosted at the private residence of Ikpoba-Okha LGA’s apex leader of APC, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, a former governorship aspirant off Dumez/Sapele Road, Benin.

Shortly after commencement of the meeting, many hoodlums and thugs invaded the venue, and injured some APC leaders and members.

Some of them are said to be on danger list in hospitals in Benin while many expensive vehicles were vandalised and other valuables carted away by the hoodlums.

Agbonayinma, speaking with reporters in Benin over the sad incident, said: “The attackers vandalised vehicles, broke chairs and tables. They also carted away drinks and a generator that was brought to power the equipment for the meeting, and they destroyed the hired musical equipment.

“This is not how politics should be played. Going violent and beating up elderly persons are condemnable. My teeming supporters and I cannot be intimidated. We are marching forward, and, God willing, victory is sure for Edo APC and its governorship candidate.

“For sometime, APC’s leaders and members in Ikpoba-Okha LGA have been pleading with me to come and take the leadership position, especially to be the apex leader of APC in Ikpoba-Okha LGA, but I told them that I was not interested because of what I have gone through. I lost my grown-up son and I am still going through a lot, because of the trauma.”

Many security operatives, particularly personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) and policemen from Edo command, were later deployed to the venue before normalcy was restored.

The stakeholders proceeded with the meeting after then.

Agbonaiyinma declared that the hoodlums that invaded the venue of the meeting would pay dearly for all the valuable items they destroyed.

Edo 2024: Imansuangbon sues LP’s Akpata, seeks ex-NBA chair’s disqualification

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has been dragged to the Federal High Court (FHC) in Benin and Abuja by the party’s governorship aspirant, Kenneth Imansuangbon, who is seeking his disqualification.

Imansuangbon, a billionaire philanthropist, who is popularly referred to as “Riceman”, given his regular distribution of bags of rice to Edo residents in the 18 local government areas, wanted the court to prevent Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), from being the party’s standard bearer for the September 21, 2024 election.

In the suit with reference number: FHC B/CS/26/2024, and filed at the Benin division of FHC by his counsel, A.A. Malik, Imansuangbon stated that LP, the second defendant, erred by declaring Akpata the winner of the party’s primary poll, conducted on February 23, 2024.

In the Abuja suit, also seen yesterday in Benin by our reporter, Imansuangbon, a lawyer, alleged that Akpata, the first defendant, lied under oath, and supplied false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In the Benin suit, Imansuangbon claimed that Akpata was not qualified to have contested the primary election, having violated the provisions of Section 222 (c) of the Nigeria Constitution, as amended, and Article 28 of the party’s guidelines for the conduct of the primary poll, declaring that the votes garnered by the first defendant in the primary election be declared invalid.

The plaintiff (Imansuangbon), who listed nine issues for determination, and 18 others for declaration by the court, asked the presiding judge to set aside LP’s February 23 governorship primary election in Edo state.

Imansuangbon asked the court to determine if Akpata was qualified to have contested the primary poll, having failed to sign/endorse the indemnity form issued to him by the second defendant (LP), and if the party conducted the primary poll in a manner outlined, prescribed or otherwise circumscribed by Section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

The plaintiff asked the court to bar INEC or any other agent from recognising Akpata as the governorship candidate of LP for the September 21 Edo governorship election.

He also called for the withdrawal of the certificate of return issued by LP to Akpata, while demanding N20 million as the cost of the suit, and asked that a fresh primary election be conducted, not later than 30 days of the judgment of the court.

Iseghohi wins Edo AA gov ticket

A former gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), Prince Tom Iseghohi, has clinched the ticket of the Action Alliance (AA) in the Edo governorship primary election.

Iseghohi, an erstwhile Managing Director at Transnational Corp of Nigeria, withdrew from the LP guber primaries, citing lack of transparency and monetisation of the process.

The frontrunner, who pitched his tent with Action Alliance, won the party’s substitution governorship primary election which held in Benin on Saturday by over 90% of the votes.

His closest rival, Chief Tony Omoba Ogie (D’King Mayor), a former gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), withdrew during the primary poll citing his belief in the agenda of Iseghohi and the party’s prospects under Iseghohi’s leadership.

Speaking after his emergence, the National Chairman of AA, Chief Kenneth Udeze, applauded Iseghohi for taking the party from one of the smallest in Edo State to the fourth largest and fastest growing party in the state in four weeks.

The AA, he noted, has grown rapidly under Iseghohi’s leadership to thousands of leaders and tens of thousands of new members during the last month.

According to him, AA is not only the fastest growing party in Nigeria but also the party to beat in the forthcoming September 21 governorship election in the state.

In his acceptance speech, the AA candidate vowed not to disappoint the people of the state if elected and he also expressed optimism about winning the September exercise.

Iseghohi told party faithful that they made a huge investment by electing him as the party’s governorship candidate, assuring them that his administration would embark on policies and programmes that will give comfort and joy to the people of the state.

His words: “Today, I stand here not as an individual, but as a representative of a movement — a movement rooted in the belief that together, we can overcome any challenge and achieve greatness. Our contract with you the brave people of Edo…Members of the globally revered Benin Empire is not merely a document but a solemn commitment — a commitment to peace, unity and prosperity for every citizen.

“Our contract outlines a bold vision for Edo State — a vision where security of lives and property is paramount, where justice and equity prevail, and where the rule of law is sacrosanct. It envisions a state united by a common purpose, guided by a shared set of values and propelled by a culture of impact-driven success.

“Furthermore, our contract is a blueprint for prosperity — an economic roadmap that prioritizes capital formation, revenue acceleration and massive expenditure in critical sectors. It promises social prosperity through clarity of identity, job creation, civic education, and human capacity development. And it envisions political prosperity through decentralized governance, democratic reforms, and empowerment of the people.”

On security, he said his administration will prioritize the safety and security of every citizen, invest in modernizing law enforcement agencies, providing them with the necessary training, equipment and technology to effectively combat crime.

He said community policing initiatives would be promoted to foster a closer relationship between the police and the people.

On economic prosperity, he promised to introduce a living wage to improve citizens’ standard of living, engage the right team to guide economic growth strategies, as well as enhance the credit rating of the state to attract investments.
