  • 150 get free treatment in Edo community

ONE  hundred and fifty residents of Usen community in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State benefited from a medical outreach held last  Sunday by the University of  Benin (UNIBEN) chapter of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students Association (FECAMDS).

The association’s president, Raphael Oludele, said the outreach is held yearly to help people in rural areas fight diseases and other life-threatening ailments.

He said: “We know many people living in villages are in the habit of not going for medical checkup because of the cost and hospital distance. We decided to take free medical treatment close to them to help them fight diseases.”

He said the outreach was unique, because it coincided with the period the national leadership of the association embarked on nationwide health project.

The students departed the Ugbowo campus of UNIBEN for the Usen village at 8 am, worshiped with the villagers at St Peter and Paul Catholic Church before the outreach commenced.

Sensitising the villagers on Lassa fever, Agatha Odaman, a 400-Level Medicine and Surgery student, said unhygienic conditions were responsible for breeding of the vector that cause the disease. She enlightened the villagers on ways to prevent the disease, saying maintaining a constant sanitation, keeping foodstuff in covered containers and going for check would help them fight the disease.

Free medical checkup followed the seminar and it lasted for four hours. The villagers, which turned up for event, underwent blood pressure check-up, urinalysis, visual screening and general body examination. Also, malaria tests were held for children under five years. The dentists rendered free scaling and polishing of teeth to some beneficiaries.

The students gave out drugs and mosquito nets donated by the Edo State Ministry of Health to the villagers.

A 58-year-old Evelyn Otasowie praised the students for the gesture and urged them to take the mission to neighbouring villages.

Members of the Catholic Church  hailed the students for holding the outreach in the village. They prayed for the students, urging them not to relent in their studies.

  • Akeredolu hails APC for Edo governorship primary

    •Ex-NBA chief congratulates Obaseki

Former Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) President Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has hailed the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the party’s national leadership for Saturday’s successful governorship primary in the state.

The leading APC governorship aspirant in Ondo State said the peaceful and transparent primary in Edo State was an indication of the party’s belief in internal democracy.

He expressed confidence that the era of candidate imposition was over in APC.

In a statement yesterday in Akure, the Ondo State capital, by his Aketi Media Group, quoted Akeredolu as saying that a free and fair primary was necessary for the party to a have a successful outing at the poll.

The frontline lawyer said such internal democracy and transparency engenders loyalty, confidence and commitment among party members.

He noted that the Edo State APC primary ended with Mr. Godwin Obaseki winning the party’s ticket.

Obaseki polled 1,618 of the 2,572 total votes cast. He was followed by Deputy Governor Pius Odubu, who polled 471 votes; Keneth, with 247 and Ogiemwonyi, 137 votes.

Others aspirants together got less than 100 votes.

The total number of delegates in the primary was 2,873 out of whom 2,582 were accredited. The total number of votes cast was 2,572.

Akeredolu, who congratulated Obaseki for clinching the APC governorship ticket, urged other aspirants to merge their structures with the winner’s and work for APC’s success in the September election.

The primaries which was peaceful was held at the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia stadium.

Voting began at about 6pm and ended at 10:50pm.

A A total of 2582 delegates were accredited to vote in the governorship primaries of the All Progressive Congress in Edo State.

These are the number of persons that presented themselves for accreditation out of a 2771 names on the delegate list.

Former lawmaker, Hon Razak Bello-Osagie described the party primaries as a show of the party’s democratic values.

He said, “This is internal democracy of the party. So, I do not expect, quite naturally, any rancorous situation. Imaginary boundaries within the party should be removed so that we can have a formidable platform for the general elections. I do not see any reason we should be decipating energies on those things that will not reinforce the integrity of what we represent as change agents.

“We need a candidate whose activities are predicated on vision, purpose, integrity, leadership and service. It is a family affair, so I expect that the process will go on peacefully to the glory God Almighty and to the benefit of humanity.

Agbomehere had earlier said he would accept the outcome of the primaries as a loyal partyman that supports unity of the party.

Hon Philip Shaibu representing Estako Federal Constituency said, “That is how I see Obaseki, as one person that will take such top decisions and will continue with the infrastructural development that the governor has laid.”

  • Edo APC primaries update: Masari committee arrives stadium

All the aspirants are seated at the stadium including top government officials.

Hundreds of persons who were not accredited were not allowed entry into the stadium but they stayed outside beating drums and singing praises of their preferred aspirant.

All delegates were asked to seat at their various local government stand.

  • Who gets Edo APC ticket?

    Who gets Edo APC ticket?

Twelve governorship aspirants are competing for the governorship ticket in Edo State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). OSAGIE OTABOR writes on the succession battle, the contenders and pretenders, and the factors that will shape the shadow poll.

The die is cast in the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC). Twelve aspirants are competing for the governorship ticket tomorrow. The candidate will face his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart at the the September 10 election.

No fewer than 3,000 delegates will decide the fate of the aspirants. Many of the aspirants have stormed the 12 local government areas soliciting for votes in the last three months. However, some contenders were also busy campaigning on the pages of the newspapers. Others have employed the television and billboards to pass their messages across to the people.

What has raised the tension and apprehension among APC members are allegations of mopping up the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and forcing delegates to swear to oaths of allegiance.

Top on the list of aspirants is Godwin Obaseki, the economic wizard. Others are Major-General Charles Airhiavbere, Chris Ogiemwonyi, Blessing Agbomhere, Dr. Pius Odubu, Kenneth Imasuangbon, Comrade Peter Esele, Oserheimen Osunbor, Tina Agbarha, Austin Emuan, Emmanuel Arigbe-Osula and Prof. Ebegbue Amadasun.

Edo South Senatorial district has the highest number of aspirants. Four aspirants are from Edo Central while the youngest aspirant, 37 year-old Agbomhere hails from Edo North. The APC is silent on zoning, but the body language of its leaders appear to lean towards a candidate from the Edo South because of its voting population.

The fate of the aspirants will be decided by the delegates. But, the outcome of the primary would also determine the relevance of Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the political family he has raised in the last seven years.

The governor has stood his ground, despite the blackmail and outright insults heaped on him when he decided to back Obaseki, the Chairman of the Edo State Economic Team. He appears to be weathering the storm in his bid to deliver his anointed candidate, despite the threat by some fifth columnists, who believe that the emergence of Obaseki could spell doom for the APC at the poll.

Oshiomhole’s loyal foot soldiers are working hard to convince delegates to stop what some had termed the disgrace of their boss, especially by his deputy, Dr. Plus Odubu, and the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Oyegun was alleged to have frustrated efforts to replace delegates, who had defected to other political parties or died since the congresses were conducted. It was learnt that Oyegun and Oshiomhole are at loggerheads over the delegates’ list. Both men are also on the divide over the choice of Oshiomhole’s successor. Oyegun is believed to be supporting Ogiemwonyi.

At a meeting with the Prince Oyinlola Fact-finding and Reconciliation Committee, Oshiomhole said he would fight the election as if he were a candidate, regardless of who wins the primary. The governor also warned that the APC in Edo State has enemies within, who “are worse than those in the opposition party.”

He said:”The truth is this might be the wish of our enemies; enemies from within and enemies from without. The more dangerous enemies are those who even purport to have joined the APC, but their soul is in the PDP. By their choice of language and style and tactics, it is clear that they wish to be in APC while actually working in futility, hoping that they can discredit APC so that their own party that we have grounded, dismantled and wrested can hopefully be revived.”

A Senior Special Assistant to Oshiomhole on Political Matters, Mr. Aiyamenkhue Edokpolor, however, said the successor to his boss must not be a “slow poison” and that the candidate “must understand that loyalty is not a slave-game, but a game of mutual interest.’

Edokpolor said the person must have sufficient capacity to regenerate the fading legacies of the founding fathers and he should have the intellectual capacity to appreciate superior arguments.

He said the person must be detached from thuggery, brigandage and vindictive tendencies, adding that he should be accessible and humble.

It is not clear who would get the ticket because the delegates could not be trusted, until they have voted. The battle for the ticket, according to APC chieftains, are between five of the 12 aspirants. Obaseki enjoys the support of entire Oshiomhole political family, the Edo APC Caucus in the National Assembly and about 18 APC lawmakers in the House of Assembly.

    Odubu:

He is the deputy governor. His boss has reportedly told him: “We come together, we go together.” This has caused friction in their relationship. Oshiomhole recently said he was informed of a plan by his deputy to use voodoo means to eliminate him. Those opposed to the deputy governor’s aspiration claimed that his emergence would give the PDP an easy victory because of what happened to Samson Osagie during the general elections when he (Osagie) attempted to go to the Senate after 16 years as a state and federal lawmaker. He was tagged Mr. ‘Only me’. Odubu was in the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2007. He became the deputy governor in 2008 after the Court of Appeal judgment. His critics said 16 years were enough for him, but Odubu has insisted that he is more experienced and qualified to succeed Oshiomhole. He has promised to grant tax holiday and waiver for the Certificate of Occupancy fees as an additional incentives to new investors.

He said: “Given the high level to which Comrade Oshiomhole has taken Edo State, the state needs a governor that is game ready. One that will hit the ground running.I am in the race to win. I have all it takes to win the primaries. I am a loyal party man. I will support any winner in a free and fair primaries.”

    Obaseki

He is the most vilified aspirant because he has the backing of the governor. Godwin is the scion of the famous Obaseki family. His great grand father was the administrator of Benin Kingdom between 1897 and 1914 while his grand-father, Ikuobase Gauis-Obaseki, represented the Benin Kingdom in the British Council during the time of Governor-General James  Robertson. His detractors have raised many issues against him. But, Godwin has been described as the architect of Oshiomhole’s success. He gathered experts to fashion out the road map for the of Oshiomhole administration. His greatest undoing was that he opted to work silently as the Chairman of the Economic Team. But, Godwin has sympathy among voters. He has been able to convince them in the course of mobilisation. He has promised to sustain the tempo of infrastructural development. His key point areas are investment in agriculture to foster economic stability,  human resources development and the formulation of policies that will lead to self-reliance.

He said: “Developing and investing in the agricultural sector is a sure shot way to economic sustainability. It will provide jobs and create associated support businesses.

“It is also one of the most effective and important strategies for economic growth, poverty reduction and more job opportunities in a state. Our abundance of intelligent human capital means Edo can become a vibrant technology hub, we must look inward to develop this resource,” he added.

    Airhiavbere

He joined the APC from the PDP after last year’s presidential election. He was the PDP governorship candidate in 2012. Airhiavbere entered politics five days after he retired from the Nigerian Army as a Major-General. He contested the PDP primaries seven months after he joined the party and he is contesting on the APC platform 13 months after his defection. Airhiavbere told reporters that the democratic process is at work in the APC. He said aspirants are not expected to purchase the ticket, unlike the PDP. He has promised to improve the public service delivery, boost agriculture and promote foreign direct investment.

    Imasuangbon

Popularly known as the ‘Rice Man,’ Imasuangbon is in the race for the third time. He is a household name in Edo. In 2007, he was asked to step down for Oshiomhole on the defunct Action Congress (AC). In 2012, he lost to Airhiavbere when he contested in the PDP. Imasuangbon is a philanthropist. He has sustained his yearly rice distribution for 10 years. He has also organised essay competitions where he distributed ipads and cash prizes to students.

The aspirant has urged other aspirants to show what they have done to lift the poor. He hoped to get a blocc vote from Edo Central where he hails from. He had promised to create wealth by blocking leakages.

Imasuagbon said: “The best way to create wealth is to create job. The best way to create job is to block the leakages. No false contract, no fake civil servant. Another way is to go into agriculture. When I am governor, I will stop throwing rice. For the past ten years, I have been giving out rice non-stop.

“When I am governor, I will have three rice plantation in each of the three senatorial district. That will take over 5000 youths off the street. We will have pineapple farm, mango farm and each of the farm will have industries at the tip end. We will not only feed Edo, we will feed other West Africa countries.”

    Arigbe-Osula

He did not show any intention to contest, until the sale of nomination forms commenced. Party members were surprised when he paid for the nomination form. Arigbe-Osula was in the House of Representative between 1999 and 2003 on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He defected to the PDP  and later. to the ACN. Critics said he was dragged into the race to help divide the votes of the Edo South. Not much was heard from him, until he purchased the form. His chance is very slim, if he does not step down, ahead of the primary.

    Ogiemwonyi

Ogiemwonyi, an engineer, worked in the oil industry for 34 years before he enteed politics. He has tagged himself as ‘Mr. Integrity.’ Ogiemwonyi, a former Minister of State for Works, joined the APC last year He has warmed his way into the hearts of some APC delegates. Ogiemwonyi said he would continue from where Oshiomhole stops with a new strategy. He is seen as a strong contender for the race

    Esele

This is the first time the former Trade Union President is participating in elective politics. He has promised to focus on three key areas-culture, agriculture and education- if elected as governor.

Esele hails from Edo Central. But, he does not believe in the Esan Agenda, which is power shift to Edo Central. He has said that merit should be the watchword, and not ethnicity.

Esele said: “We want to have functional educational system to help children fit into the 21st century. My life is my canvass which I intend to reproduce. You cannot have a government when you cannot plan. A government is driven by data, research and analysis.”

“Leaders want to go this way, delegates want to go the other way. I am in this race because I love it. I have carried out research because it makes me happy. Other aspirants should tell the people what they want to do. I will not be a governor where my commissioner of Education cannot tell you the number of pupils in primary school. I will not be a governor where my Commissioner of Agriculture does not know extension workers. I know what to do. I do not believe in money bag. I want to bring in new things.”

    Agbarha

She is the only woman aspirant. She has promised to make women hold key positions in government, including the Chief of Staff, Secretary to Government and the chairman of the party. Her chances are very slim, owing to the financial muscle of her male counterparts.

    Amadasun

He is the oldest aspirant. Prof. Amadasun first contested for the governorship on the platform of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) against Chief John Oyegun. That was in the aborted Third Republic. He is a Professor of Anasthesiology. He said he has developed a winning strategy since he does not have the financial muscle. Prof. Amadasun said he was not bothered about the purchase of PVCs by any aspirant.

He added: “All is fair in war. The delegates are available for use. Why don’t the aspirants go out to use their method to win. They should also go out and buy PVC of devise ways to mitigate buying.

“I believe all is fair in war. I am devising my method. I will win. I am devising my unique ways since I don’t have money to share and also knowing the advantages my opponent have.”

    Agbomhere

He is the youngest aspirant. He is a critic of the governor. Agbomhere said he would probe Oshiomhole and ensure that looted funds are returned to the treasury. His targets are the youths. He said he would make Edo the Dubai of Africa and boost the economy by creating marketing boards.

  • Edo to access N14b Fed Govt budget support fund

Edo to access N14b Fed Govt budget support fund

The Edo State House of Assembly has given Governor Adams Oshiomhole the nod to access get N14.160 billion budget support facility from the Federal Government.

This followed a letter the governor sent to the Assembly, requesting its resolution to access the loan.

Majority Leader Foly Ogedengbe (APC Owan East) moved the motion for the consideration of the governor’s request. It was seconded by Minority Leader Patrick ILoube (PDP, Esan Northeast).

Ogedengbe said the fund was another bailout loan initiated by the Federal Government to support the state’s payment of salaries.

He said: “What we are doing now is to give the state government the legal backing to access the fund.”

Speaker Elizabeth Ativie directed that copies of the resolution be sent to the governor for immediate action.

  • ‘PDP crisis should serve as a lesson to Edo delegates’

‘PDP crisis should serve as a lesson to Edo delegates’

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Chief Nosa Ekhoe, has said the crisis in the party should serve a as lesson to Edo delegates as to who to trust with their ticket.

Ekhoe said those causing problems in the party are men with selfish ambition, adding that many of them are only loyal to their causes and not of interest of the PDP.

He added: “For the future of our party in Edo State… delegate should choose a candidate who will serve the interest of the good people of Edo State and of our party.

“It is a known fact that Matthew Iduoriyekemwen is the most loyal party man seeking the nomination for Edo gubernatorial election.

“Supporting Iduoriyekemwen  with your nominations is a step closer to Greater Edo of our collective dreams. Do it for the next generations. Together we will get there.”

  • Edo Central endorses ex-TUC chief Esele for APC ticket

union of Esan indigenes in Edo Central Senatorial District, the Edo Okpa Vanguard (EOV), has endorsed a former President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Peter Esele, as its choice of governorship aspirant.

A communiqué yesterday in Benin, the state capital, by the group’s Head of Operations, Alhaji Mohammed Osimen, said five aspirants from Esan were eyeing the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket, ahead of the party’s primary next Saturday.

The aspirants are: Prof Oserheimen Osunbor, Mr Peter Esele, Mr Kenneth Imasuagbon, Mr Austine Emuan and the only female aspirant, Mrs Tina Agbarha.

The socio-political group, which alleged neglect of the senatorial district in political appointments under the current administration, noted that narrowing the choice to Esele would enhance the chances of the district to clinch the APC ticket.

Acknowledging that each of the five aspirants has what it takes to be a good governor, EOV said it was impossible for the five of them to be governor at the same time.

The group urged other aspirants to support Esele in order to boost the chances of the “marginalised” district to have a shot at the governorship seat in the September 10 election.

According to the communiqué, various reasonable criteria were used to scrutinise the aspirants for their chances at the polls to ensure that an Esan indigene becomes governor.

The communiqué said: “Our immediate focus, which is an Esan person for Edo State Governor 2016, was exhaustively discussed during the meeting. We observed that at least five persons from Esan are vying for the governorship seat on different party platforms.

“We also observed that each of them has what it takes to be a good governor and that if any of them is given the chance to govern the state, the person will perform creditably well. However, we can’t have all of them as governors at the same time.

“We recalled that Edo State is made up of three senatorial districts – Edo North, Edo Central and Edo South. Edo North and Edo South senatorial districts have each done eight years as governor in the last 16 years.

“It is now the turn of Edo Central to produce the next governor. If Esan Central really wants to realise its desire of an Esan indigene for governor, it must first put its house in order to be able to appeal and solicit for votes from the people of Edo State.

“Having many Esan aspirants is a clear indication for split votes at the election; it is the number of votes that matters in elections. So, block votes are needed, not split votes.

“As a result of the need to boost its chances in realising the Esan Agenda, it has become necessary as a matter of strategy, to narrow down to one among the Esan candidates who will be generally accepted across the three senatorial zones for a better chance at the polls.”

  • Edo PDP leaders allege plot to rig governorship primary

Edo PDP leaders allege plot to rig governorship primary

    •Party elects 576 delegates today

Some leaders of the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have kicked against the alleged decision to use the same delegates’ list used for the recent election of the state’s chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, for the governorship primary.

This happened as the Prof. Tunde Adeniran-led committee is set to arrive in the state for the conduct of the primary on June 20.

The party’s leaders said it would be unconstitutional to use the same list since the party’s constitution clarifies that it must conduct fresh congresses to elect delegates who would vote for aspirants of their choice in any election.

It was learnt that the decision to go with the same list of delegates, who elected the state’s PDP chairman, was reached at the weekend at a meeting at the home of a former chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Tony Anenih.

Some leaders of the party, led by Okharedia Ihimekpen, who addressed reporters yesterday, said: “The decision to use Orbih’s delegates is unconstitutional. It is criminal and it is unacceptable. Whoever will emerge from this primary will be unacceptable to the party and the public because it will be contested in court.

“We should go back to our constitution to see the rules. You don’t carry over a delegate who was used for chairmanship election for the governorship primary. What some PDP leaders want to do was to rig the primary before the exercise. The PDP constitution is very explicit on this matter. Section 25, sub-section L stipulates that every delegate election is for a particular election. After that, it cannot be used again.

“So, any attempt to use the old list of delegates is an attempt to rig the primary. It will be resisted.”

Also, members of state’s PDP will today elect 576 delegates who will participate in the party’s governorship primary on June 20.

Already, three aspirants have been paid N16 million each to pick the party’s nomination forms.

The governorship aspirants: are Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen and Chief Solomon Edebiri.

Besides the 576 delegates to be elected across the 192 wards, other statutory delegates, including former governors, former deputy governor, former lawmakers and others, would be added.

Edo State PDP Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, who confirmed this in a telephone chat with our reporter, urged the party members to conduct themselves well.

Edebiri, who would contest the PDP primary for the first time, said he was not bothered about the election of delegates.

The aspirant said the PDP leaders were aware that the party must win the election and that Edo residents were asking for only one man.

He said: “That man is Solomon Edebiri. I believe they will hearken to the voice of reason. I will, however, remain in the party and work for the party, if the delegates decide otherwise.”

  • Odubu: Edo needs a ready governor, not one with potential

Odubu: Edo needs a ready governor, not one with potential

Edo State Deputy governor and governorship aspirant on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Pius Odubu, has said the state needs a man who is ready to be governor in all aspects and not someone with mere potential.

Odubu spoke at the weekend at a reception organised for him in Benin, the state capital, by his supporters, on his return from screening in Abuja.

The deputy governor noted that being a student of Oshiomhole’s school of governance in the last seven years, he was the right man for the job.

He urged the delegates not to be coerced into voting against their preferred candidate, adding that they must freely choose who to govern them.

Odubu said: “I have been in school; I have been in Oshiomhole’s school of governance and he has rated me as the best.

“We need a governor who will hit the ground running. We need a governor who is game-ready and not one with potential.

“We will bring to bear all the governor has thought us and those we know on our own. We will do the greatest good to the greatest number of the people within the shortest possible time when we get there.

“By His grace, I know and I believe that I am the man who will take over from the governor.”

Following the purported allegation of massive buying of the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) by a particular aspirant, Odubu urged said delegates must protect their PVCs, which he said is their property.

He said: “My good people of Edo State, I hear they are collecting PVCs. Please, your PVC is your property. It is your right, don’t sell it; don’t mortgage your future.

“You have to freely choose the man or woman who you want. You must, on your own free volition, choose who will govern Edo State. I want to assure you: all through the years, I have prepared myself for this occasion. I have prepared myself for now.”

Apparently surprised by the reception and the crowd that greeted him, Odubu said: “I am completely short of words to attest my gratitude to this multitude of people.

“Your solidarity and support, all through these years, show that we have a common goal, a common purpose. That is to deliver the deliverable to the greatest number in the shortest possible time.

“These past few months, we have been through a lot together. I see a group of people that is dedicated, committed, dogged, in the support for a common son, like me. Let me assure you that we will not disappoint you.

“There will be many things yet to happen. From the beginning, I told my people that the battle is neither for the brave nor the race for the swift. It is for those who endure.

“We have endured a lot to get here. We are counting down now. We have a few days to go. I am just coming in from Abuja. We have been given a clean bill of health by the national party to contest this election.

“I want to beg all of you: let us go to the stadium peacefully that day and exercise our franchise. Nobody can stop you.

“Today, let them listen; let those who have ears hear. Let them hear that nobody can stop the sun from rising.

“I believe and I do believe that by God’s grace, we shall overcome. Nobody can stop any man whose time has come. Our time has come. We are looking up to God; no man is God. We have a God, a God of justice. God has the final say.”

APC has fixed June 18 for its primary while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled its for June 20.
