    PDP suffers setback in Edo

•Over 1,200 dump party for the APC

What looks like a hurricane swept through Epkeri land at the weekend as over 1, 200 members of the People Democratic Party (PDP) defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Epkeri is a densely-populated riverine area of 10 communities in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State.

The decampees made up of women, youths and erstwhile PDP leaders, tore the umbrella, the party’s symbol into shreds because, according to them, it could no longer provide the desired shelter. They waved the broom, symbol of the APC, to the admiration of the leaders present.

The event was held at the Udaba community square, saw

Leader of the decampees, Sheik Muktar Ilenobe said he was the last oxygen of the PDP in the council, adding that now that he has been disconnected, the party has breathed its last. The Islamic educationist cum legal practitioner said he would ensure the disconnection of what he described as “smaller oxygen” sustaining the PDP across the wards.

Another leader, Chief P.F Abebe, who is also the chairman of the community, said he was coming into the APC with his followers, adding that “now that I have come, nobody is left in the PDP. If you hear PDP again in Udaba, you know it’s fake, no more PDP here. My movement today signifies PDP’s end, this is a party without national, state or local government presence, so why should I continue to be there, I have to leave to give meaningful and genuine leadership to my people”.

A female decampee, Mrs. Felicia Elestso caused emotional stir when she said she joined the APC of her own volition without anyone prompting as her conscience kept pricking her whenever she travelled on the asphalt road built by the APC government, whenever she sees the community lighted, whenever she drinks water from government’s pipes. She said she cannot see light and continue to grope in darkness.

The decampees were received by the lawmaker representing Etsako Central in the House of Assembly, Damian Lawani and the zone two leader, Alhaji Waziri Oshiomha.

According to Lawani, “there was no government presence here (Udaba) until the coming of the APC. The APC government brought light and road that opened up our community.

“We can see, touch and feel the APC in Epkeri land. So, no one will see light and road and continue to wallow in ignorance. Without begging the issue, APC is the party to belong to”.

On his part, Sir Oshiomha assured the decampees that the APC is a party of justice and none of them will be discriminated against.

  • ‘How I succeeded as Edo council boss’

The first female chairman of Ovia North East Local Government, Hon Lucy Omagbon, has attributed her achievements to prudent management of resources as well as adequate utilization of SURE-P funds.

Hon Omagbon said she saved the N7.9m monthly SURE-P fund for about six months and used the savings to purchase 10 buses for the operation of Ovia North East Line.

Besides the SURE-P funds, Omagbon said she shored up IGR from every nooks and crannies of the locality because she inherited a deficit of N25m at a time several council chairmen collected between N300m to N700m saved by Governor Adams Oshiomhole during the transition period.

Speaking to newsmen after the inauguration of a six block of classroom and an ultra modern office complex, Hon Omagbon said the bold and difficult decisions she took saw a total transformation of the local government.

Parts of the decision were the transfer of unwanted teachers from the local government and sacking of some workers who were illegally employed.

She said buses in the fleet have been increased to 19 and the proceeds were used to pay salaries of junior workers.

Explaining why she built a gigantic council secretariat, Omagbon stated that many staff were loitering around the secretariat due to lack of office space.

She said her desire to made a change in the council was not to be called a looter after leaving office.

According to her, “You choose what people will call you. If you want to be call a looter, share the money and if you want to be remembered well, work for the people. Our success was a collective effort between myself, the civil servants and the councillors. We met a deficit and it was a strong challenge for us. While other chairmen met huge sums of money, we met a deficit of N25m.”

“That became a source of challenge. We set up an Economic Team and started going about to raise our IGR from the nooks and crannies of the local government. We had many teachers and we cried out because we were determined on the number of teachers we needed.”

“The SURE-P Fund of N7.9m was not touched. We left it for about six months and we used it to purchase ten buses with which we started a transport line. Those 10 buses worked and we increased the fleet to 19 buses. We are not owing any bank in respect of those vehicles. The money they are working now helped us to do other things. Sometimes it help us to pay salaries of junior workers.”

“We built this complex out of the desire and yearnings of the staff. I met staff loitering around. There were no offices. There is no accommodation for political office holders.

We opted to do something and did not allow the initial difficult to deter us.”

Group condemns sack of Edo lawmaker

A socio-political group, the League of Young Edo Professionals (LEYEP) has condemned the sacking of Gowon Jerry, the lawmaker representing Etsako West 11 Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly.

Jerry was sacked by the Court of Appeal based in technicalities and declared Sylvanus Eruaga of the Peoples Democratic Party winner of the election.

The group described the court’s ruling as a miscarriage of justice.

It said the sacking of the APC lawmaker based on technical issues and not on electoral malpractice or loss of votes was a disservice to the people of Etsako West 11 Constituency.

A press statement signed by the group’s Secretary-General, Dr. Osatohamwen Nosakhare, the league said the people endured harsh weather conditions and intimidation from all areas to cast their votes for the APC candidate.

Dr. Nosakhare said it stood reason on its head for the Election Petitions Tribunal to declare a candidate who garnered 4,001 votes winner against that of a candidate who polled 14,373 votes.

The group noted: “The league of Young Edo Professionals finds it discomfiting that the Tribunal relied on mere technicalities to annul the 14,373 votes legitimately won by Mr. Jerry and gave victory to Mr. Sylvanus who polled a mere 4,001 votes.

According to the statement, “While we admit that the APC may have erred as it failed to meet the required 21-day sent to INEC to hold its primaries, we make bold to say that the candidate who went through the full electoral process should not have been made to suffer the negligence of a few.

“The reliance on technicalities to nullify the 14,373 votes freely given to Gowon Jerry by the good people of Etsako West 11 is therefore a travesty of justice.

“It is disheartening that the PDP and its candidate are celebrating the nullification of votes freely given to another candidate when they should hide their heads in shame for the poor outing in the election and seek ways to worm themselves into the hearts of the people for the next elections.

“The League believes that although the Courts have sacked the APC candidate, the PDP really has no moral right to claim a victory they could not win at the polls, but through court technicalities.”

  • Edo 2016: APC, Oshiomhole and the endorsement crisis

Edo 2016: APC, Oshiomhole and the endorsement crisis

As the political parties and aspirants prepare for this year’s governorship election in Edo State, Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, reports that alleged endorsement of one of the APC aspirants by Governor Adams Oshiomhole may have raised the stake in the politics of South-South state

Ahead of the 2016 governorship election in Edo State, a cold war is brewing within the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), over a rumoured endorsement of one of the leading aspirants, Godwin Obaseki, by Governor Adams Oshiomhole as his preferred governorship candidate of the party.

Obaseki, who is currently the chairman of the economic team of Edo State Government, is seeking the ticket of the APC alongside other prominent chieftains of the ruling party like Oshiomhole’s deputy, Dr. Pius Odubu, ex-Governor Osarhiemen Osunbor, incumbent Commissioner for Works and political ally of the governor, Osarodion Ogie, former Minister of State, Works, Dr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Kenneth and Gen. Charles Airhiavbere.

Although there has been no official announcement by the governor on the matter, proponents of the endorsement theory are citing Oshiomhole’s body languages as well as some public statements as reasons for adducing that he has Obaseki in mind as the next governor of the state.

“The governor has never hidden his desire to have a technocrat succeed him. He has said that much at many fora. He has even given reasons for his preference. Obaseki is a technocrat and not a politician. He is one of the trusted allies of the governor and he is in the race.

“Recently, while speaking at a programme he attended with Obaseki, the governor told the gathering that the man who will succeed him is at the event listening to him and learning more. It was after this that the other aspirants went to town with the endorsement allegations,” a source told The Nation.

“Oshiomhole was never a politician before he ran for the governorship of this state. But today, Edo State is one of the most vibrant states in the country despite its meagre resources.

“When Oshiomhole came, he constituted a team and this same Obaseki for instance, from day one, put a team together to support the governor. He supported the process to raise a strong team of professionals to help the administration of the governor.

“Obaseki remained in the policy cockpit of the Oshiomhole administration. What is needed in Edo State now as a recipe for development, not restricting the choice of candidate to those who see themselves as just politicians,” he said.

The Nation also learnt that some local party leaders informed their disciples about the alleged endorsement of Obaseki by the governor during the festive period while urging them to be prepared to work for his victory at the party’s primary election.

Consequently, other aspirants are alleging a plot to impose Obaseki on the party by the outgoing governor, vowing to resist such attempt. Observers of the politics of the state say if not well managed, the development is capable of affecting the chances of the ruling party at the governorship election.

    Party position

But the chairman of the APC in the state, Mr. Anslem Ojezua, denied any plot to impose any aspirant as candidate while warning party members against misconstruing Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s rumoured preference for Obaseki as imposition.

The APC boss explained that it was the governor’s right to state who he prefers as his successor, explaining that will not stop the party from conducting primaries and providing a level playing field for everybody. He cautioned those threatening and abusing the governor over his preference for Obaseki.

He said: “It will be naive and unthinkable not to expect a sitting governor to have interest in who succeeds him in the governorship election. It is not true that the governor decided not to conduct primaries or whatever processes that may lead to the emergence of a candidate.

“I took it upon myself and I told the governor that we cannot leave this process open without managing it and that it is the job of the state executive to ensure stability. Now, we have almost 20 people parading themselves as aspirants in this party. If you don’t manage such a situation well you will be creating crisis.

“I am not aware that any statement has been made in terms of endorsement. But I can tell you now that if an endorsement is made, it will be legitimate. Endorsement is not imposition, it is a statement of expressing preference without prejudice to the processes of our party,” he stated.

    The man Oshiomhole wants

Amidst the frenzy, Oshiomhole has insisted that his successor will have to come from the All Progressives Congress, APC, and must be someone who believes in the state and has the capacity to manage it well.

Addressing Benin Palace chiefs, led by Chief John Oviasogie, the Eribo of Benin, at the Government House recently, the governor said he is concerned about who will emerge as the party’s standard bearer just like any other member of the party, adding that there will be a level-playing field for all.

“May God give us a governor that will put Edo people first, that will respect the traditional institution and that will work for the unity of our people across the 192 wards, across the state.

“As I have said repeatedly, I think all of us must work together to ensure that we have a governor who, first and foremost, believes in Benin, and who believes in the state, because if someone does not believe in the state, and he has power, he will help himself.

“Running a government is different from running a private enterprise. When you are working for a government, the interest is the people of the state. The second is to have the capacity to manage finances prudently because you may wish to do your best, but you cannot give what you don’t have.

“If you don’t have the brain, if you don’t have the knowledge and you don’t have the capacity, you will not be able to do it. So, we need people who can apply resources creatively.

“From my inner insight of what this job entails, I believe we should look for people who believe in the state and have the capacity to run it. We have the right to educate the people about the person whom we think will be safe.

“Be rest assured that I am as concerned as yourselves because we have seen the damage which the wrong driver can do to our collective vehicle. Everything is the same, the only difference is the person who heads the government,” the governor said.

    PDP watching keenly

Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be watching the developments within the APC with keen interest, hoping to benefit from the crisis should it escalate.

Sources within the party said the PDP is determined to return to the Edo Government House this year and is doing everything possible to ensure victory at the governorship election.

Those who may have indicated interest to run for the 2016 governorship race under the PDP include immediate past Minister of Works, Chief Mike Onolememen; former member of the state House of Assembly, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen; Vice Chairman (South-South) of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Solomon Iyobosa Edebiri.

  • Edo 2016: Clowns in search of crown

Edo 2016: Clowns in search of crown

Seven plus years ago, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole became the governor of Edo State as a result of the degenerate and decadent state of affairs. His dynamic personality, the clarity of his mind, the catholicity of his ideas and his remarkable talents as an organiser and former union leader infused a new life and determination into the polity and the people’s hope to dream anew.

It’s left to Edo people to now tell whether Governor Oshiomhole has lost his illustrious name; become a shell of his admirable former self, dispirited by raw power or has become an intrepid tribune of social reengineering, change agent or out-and-out democrat! Whatever perceptions or views one holds of the comrade governor depends largely on the political divide one finds him/herself.

Today, Oshiomhole is one significant politician who has the same and equal popularity across the divides. Those who admire him and those who despise him do so with equal passion. The succession political battle by the two main political parties, the ruling APC and the opposition PDP will be prosecuted on Governor Oshiomhole’s failures or successes in that last seven and half years in office.

However, Governor Oshiomhole, undeniably, has enviable development records going for him. Since he assumed office in 2008, he has tackled the dearth of functional infrastructural facilities and basic amenities that had turned the state into a living hell. He has repositioned completely a scruffy political system where graft had become a pastime, and a dejected populace in dire need of purposeful leadership. He has restored sanity to a decapitated public service staffed by a disgruntled workforce; and the stone-aged educational system that was turning out ill-equipped individuals without the required productive capacities to contribute to the development of the state.

The Comrade Governor has resuscitated the lethargic health sector that left the sick at the mercy of charlatans, the health vendors who profit from the ignorance of help seekers. He has managed to contribute his quotas by buying hundreds of Hilux vehicles and communication gadgets for the Nigeria police to stem the tide of the mind-bending state of insecurity spurred by widespread cultism across the state. More than anything else, since 2008, Oshiomhole has striven to correct all the systemic woes that had bedeviled the state from its creation, performing feats that have confounded even his harshest critics.

But there is a snag on Governor Oshiomhole’s political empire. “One man, one vote” (or “one person, one vote”) is a name that has been used in many parts of the world where campaigns have arisen for universal suffrage. During the 20th-century period of decolonisation and the struggles for national sovereignty, from the late 1940s onwards this phrase became widely used in less developed countries where majority populations were seeking to gain political power in proportion to their numbers.

The phrase was used in this form in an important legal ruling in the United States related to voting rights; applying the Equal Protection Clause of the US Constitution, the Supreme Court majority opinion in Reynolds v. Sims (1964) ruled that state legislatures needed to redistrict in order to have congressional districts with roughly equal represented populations.

In 2012, Governor Adams Oshiomhole exhaustively dramatised the phrase in his reelection bid to draw a link between democracy and freedom of choice. He made the point then that democracy is a set of ideas and principles about freedom of choice, which consists of a set of practices and procedures that have been molded through a long, often tortuous history. The point he was trying to make was that democracy is the institutionalization of freedom, which includes human rights; the right for the civil populace to freely elect their leaders in government and equality before the rules. He also meant to say that candidates in an election has his/her own Everest to climb without undue favouritism and manipulation.

Now, a great deal of the electorate are in an irritable mood on the governor’s moves to truncate the “One man one vote” mantras with his rumoured endorsement of Mr. Godwin Obaseki. The believe is that the less well-known Obaseki did not entertain governorship notion until Governor Oshiomhole drafted him into the race, thereby trusting his candidacy down of the APC party leadership and Edo people. There is the for the governor to clear his own name.

At the last count, nearly 30 aspirants have indicated interest to succeed the Comrade Governor from both the APC and PDP, a handful of them mere notional contenders, while many are pretenders who are there to make up the number. From the camp of the APC are the former Minister of Works, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi; Governor Oshiomhole’s deputy, Dr Pius Odubu, ex-Governor Osarhemhen Osunbor, PDP governorship candidate in 2012, Maj. General Charles Arhiavbere (rtd),  the former PENGASSAN and TUC President, Comrade Peter Esele, the former Principal Private Secretary to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Mr. Odia Ofeimu, Chairman of the Edo State Economic Team, Godwin Obaseki, Commissioner for Works, Osarodion Ogie; Architect Austin Emuan, Lagos-based business man Mr. Kenneth Imasuagbon and movie producer Don Pedro Obaseki, and a host of others.

On the side of the PDP are the immediate past Edo South Senator Ehigie Uzamere; former member of the state House of Assembly, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen; Vice Chairman (South-South) of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Solomon Iyobosa Edebiri. No doubt, governing Edo State is attractive given the number of aspirants, but the fact remains that majority of them are mere pretenders, who are likely to drop out of the race before their respective parties’ primaries.

The Benin Leaders of Thought, BLT, a few days ago warned against the re-introduction of political godfatherism in Edo state, which they said Governor Adams  himself fought hard against in the past. What a turn of the tide!

The warning came on the heels of the alleged imposition of a governorship aspirant by Governor Oshiomhole, for the 2016 gubernatorial election in the state. ?Some aspirants have kicked and expressed their displeasure over rumours that the governor has ordered his aides to ‘go and market’ the Chairman of the State Economic Team, Dr. Godwin? Obaseki, popularly referred to as Dangote man, to the people of the state.

Chairman of the group and Enogie of Obazuwa, Prince Edun Akenzua, while addressing journalists in Benin, said though the group disbelieved the rumour of Oshiomhole’s alleged imposition of an aspirant, the issue has excited the imagination of observers of Edo politics in recent times. Quoting Governor Oshiomhole in the Vanguard of Thursday, November 12, 2009, as saying that “what makes governance difficult is that some leaders are imposed on the people. That situation creates an absence of support. And people will become cynical about you,” the Benin Leaders of Thought said it was against that background that they were taken aback by the rumour that the governor has anointed his successor in this year’s gubernatorial race.

“The people of Edo State should be given free hands to determine their next governor. Popular participation bestows responsibility for governing one’s own conduct, develops ones character, self-reliance, intelligence and moral judgement. In a democracy, there is no substitute for popular participation. Even if a benevolent despot could govern in the public interest, he would be rejected by the classic democrat. Man can only know the truth by discovering it himself,” the Benin Leaders of Thought added.

Mr. Godwin Obaseki’s misadventure into the Benin historical facts was a miscarriage as much as political mishap. He granted two separates interviews in two national newspapers where he chided the Benin dynasty for not taking his grandfather’s advice. In the other interview, he revealed his limited understanding of development politics.

Mr. Obaseki said that when the British entered Benin Kingdom and attempted to do ‘business’ with Benin, his grandfather advised the then Oba of Benin, Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi, to sign a treaty with the foreigners. But all available evidence suggest that the British did not intend to do business with any of their eventual colonies, rather they were on a colonial mission as they did also with Jaja, Nana, Attahiru and Kosoko, among others. In another interview Mr. Obaseki was quoted to have said, “my area of specialisation is (Capitalism). I was born into Capitalist system and it is also the system of governance of Edo State people right from time immemorial and I don’t know when socialism entered the system”.

Now, there are throw back questions to Mr. Obaseki by the Benin elite in this order: “Is Capitalism a specialist area of study in any department or in any academic institution? When and where was the Capitalist system Mr. Godwin Obaseki was born into? Is Mr. Godwin Obaseki Capitalist system an attribute of an individual, a group of persons or the society in which he was born? If Capitalism has always been a system of governance in Edo, as Head of the Economic Team of Edo State Government under the governorship of a former worker and union leader, how do you reconcile the Capitalist system of administration in Edo State with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s masses oriented policies of administration in Edo State? These are pertinent questions begging for answer.

Granted that it will be almost impossible to find an ideal governor for Edo State in 2016, someone who will combine the best attributes of Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Pastor Ize-Iyamu and Dr. Pius Odubu’s passion for the job. The ideal leader, just like the ideal man or woman, is perfectly academic. In the end we will have to settle for a leader, who, like the rest of us, is not perfect, but who hopefully possesses some abilities to make a difference.

Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi may not possess all the qualities needed in Osadebe Avenue at this historical moment, but he certainly possesses some critical and crucial ones. The most important question agitating the minds of the electorate is whether his personal qualities will facilitate his own definition of the primary task at hand, which is sustaining the development strides of the comrade governor.

  • Edo APC urged to even gubernatorial field

Edo APC urged to even gubernatorial field

The Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council in Edo state, Mr Osaro Obaze, has asked the state chapter of the APC to provide a level playing field for all gubernatorial aspirants vying for the ticket and avoid mistakes of the immediate past.

He said that the Edo of 2016 could not be the Edo of 2008.

He also urged the party to shun endorsement and imposition of favoured aspirants by a godfather because of grave political consequences.

Addressing a press conference in Benin City, Obaze said: “A proper primary election must be conducted to ensure that the candidate that will emerge will enjoy 70% to 80% general acceptance by the party followers in particular and appeal to the electorate in general.

“For the avoidance of doubt, let me remind our leaders of the danger of one person playing the role of godfatherism and trying to impose a candidate against the wishes of the member of the party.

“This is against the recent events in last year’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in which the party suffered huge loses as a result of wrongful imposition of candidates in Ovia Federal Constituency, that is, Osahon versus Charity Amayamvbo.

“Let me also remind our esteemed delegates that unlike previous election, the comrade governor is not going to be on the ballot paper. It is therefore imperative that we shun the antics of godfather and embrace the rule of democratic process, as the candidate that will emerge from the contesting political parties will be voted for on the basis of their antecedents.”

On reports that he will vote against his party, he said: “Let me also say that at no time did I say that I will vote for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. Such insinuation was the handiwork of my political detractors, who want to pull me down politically.

  • Edo: Will APC get it right?

Edo: Will APC get it right?

Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Hon. Samson Osagie examines the succession struggle and what Governor Adams Oshiomhole can do to avert an electoral calamity for the ruling party.

With the governorship election in Edo State barely seven months away as the administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole winds up on November 11, it is not surprising that political activities are already attaining a feverish pitch in the two major political parties- the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While the APC parades the deputy governor and a host of other eminent Edo sons as governorship aspirants , the PDP parades the former Secretary to Edo State Government Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and a few prominent Edo Sons as well in the quest to grab the ticket of the party.

For the APC, all is certainly not well with the rumored endorsement of one of the aspirants (not the deputy governor) by the governor of the state, who ordinarily should provide a level-playing field for all contenders with the most popular amongst the aspirants emerging as the flag bearer. And unless this is carefully managed it may just be the foundation for the party to lose power to the opposition who is not leaving anything to chance in their rabid determination to wrestle power from the ruling APC in the State.

This fear is what is palpable amongst APC members and some of the party’s apologists across the state. And I have no reason to deny that same exist especially as one of the latest victim of a mismanaged electoral process in the 2015 general elections by the ruling APC. Yes the party mismanaged that election when candidates who won primaries particularly in the OVIA axis of the Edo South Senatorial district were denied their tickets and the lack of planning and preparations by the party for the elections.

The 2016 governorship election is going to be the true test of Governor Oshiomhole’s capacity to sustain his party’s hold on power in the state or lack of it.

There is however no doubt that he is already on the way to causing the party irreparable damage by the way things are going in the party just now. Let it not be said that some of us kept mute when the ship of the ruling APC, is about to ‘berth in a pestilential Aqua ‘ to borrow from my brother the Chief of Staff, Hon Patrick Obahiahbon.

This position is underscored by the deliberate attempt and action of those who holds the reins of authority in the state to label some aspirants and their supporters as enemies of the Governor who must be dealt with while others must be submerged politically all in a bid to secure ticket for an anointed candidate who by himself does not understand the ensuing dynamics of the State politics particularly in Edo South. It’s almost forgotten by those who have constituted a cabal around the governor and himself that there is going to be an election after the primaries and one wonders whether the bad blood that is been encouraged and fueled by the sycophants around the governor just now will deliver the votes when the real election comes sometimes in July.

The governor must know and realize quickly that he is not going to be on the ballot and as such he must be mindful not to become a campaign director to any aspirant who seeks to govern Edo people at least before the primaries.

He must also realise that Edo of 2008 when he assumes office and 2012 when he ran for a second term is no longer the same. Our elderly ones are more vibrant, our women more enlightened while our youths are more than ever before more vigilant. Yes he has performed admirably but the politics of succession must be administered by him in a most matured and fatherly manner especially within his party so as not to rock the boat. A good attribute of a leader is to also listen to the yearnings of the followers and take into account the peculiarity of the circumstances. How an Edo South candidate will emerge Governor of Edo State without the critical segments of the district not making input is a mirage to many. For me no one is indispensable and if the people remains the fulcrum in a democracy then imposition or any such attempt must be eschewed.

It will be disastrous for the APC to repeat the monumental failure it recorded during the last general elections particularly in Edo South and Edo Central. If I have my way , the party ought to be more concerned about the strategy needed to reverse that trend at this stage rather than attempting to create bad blood , decimate and in some cases sack political office holders on account of their closeness to certain aspirants.

In the unlikely event that APC loses power to PDP in the 2016 gubernatorial election, it is the APC itself as a party that would have itself to blame.

Five suspected cultists have been arrested by the Police in Edo State for disrupting church activities at Ebelle in Igueben Local Government Area.

Musical instruments in the church, Disciples for Christ for All Nation, were destroyed and many of the church members including the pastor were beaten up.

Trouble was said to have started on December 31st during the cross over night celebration when the suspected cultists went to the church to thank God.

A church member said one of the boys brought in a bottle of beer and was smoking cigarette inside the church.

The source said the boy refused to leave the church insisting that he used to smoke and drink with the pastor of the church, Prophet Jonathan Momodu.

Witnesses said the church members fled after more suspected cultists invaded the church and ordered the pastor to leave.

Tension was said to have heightened in the community as more cultists were said to have stormed the community from Benin City

Edo Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Osifo, confirmed the incident and said the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

He also added that more suspects may be arrested.

“I am aware of five suspected that were arrested, among the others at large. They (suspects) were alleged to have disrupted a church service and for they are being investigated for cultism,” Osifo said.

  • Edo: What if it’s Obaseki?

    Edo: What if it’s Obaseki?

Governor Adams Oshiomhole,  in what is akin to setting bail conditions, has listed two qualities an APC gubernatorial aspirant must have to qualify to be the next governor of Edo State. According to the Comrade Governor,  the preferred aspirant must be someone who believes in the state as well as have the capacity to manage it. Comrade Oshiomhole says “from my inner insight of what this job entails, I belive we should look for people who believe in the state and have the capacity to run it”.

This is coming from someone who should know what governance of development entails. Having served the state for almost eight years now, Comrade Oshiomhole knows the state and its people so well as to seek to bequeath to them a government that can reasonably be expected to sustain the tempo of development in the state. There is no doubt that Edo State has, under Oshiomhole, witnessed a high tempo of  infrastructural and human capital development thereby setting a standard which must not only be maintained but be improved upon by the succeeding administration.

It is common knowledge that every governor, being leader of his party in his state, has a high interest in who succeeds him in office. This interest is not just for the reason of self-preservation but for the preservation and sustainability of his legacies. Oshiomhole has legacies which must be protected, sustained and imbibed by all for the peace and development of Edo State. For example, he has always been very passionate about transparency and accountability in governance,  insisting that state funds belong to the people and must, therefore, be used to provide for their good. His commendable and exemplary application of state resources in the prompt payment of workers monthly salaries,  including state pension obligations; the massive infrastructural development in education, health, road, water, urban renewal and beautification,  electricity as well as the ingenious tax administration and collection regime require sustainability.

The vision which has driven and propelled the Oshiomhole administration to this laudable achievement may be that of the Comrade Governor himself but working with a team of knowledgeable aides who not only share in the vision but have the capacity to translate and implement programmes and policies envisioned. The success achieved by this administration should, therefore,  be rightly attributed to the visionary prowess,  managerial wizardry and selfless disposition of the Comrade Governor as well as the commitment, dogged and energetic  implementation of policies and programmes to meet set goals.

It may not be public knowledge but much of this shared accolade should go to the State Economic Team put together by the Comrade Governor at the start of his administration to act as think-tank to formulate, articulate and implement (where appropriate) people-oriented programmes which would impact positively on Edo people. This team, headed by the charismatic catalyst and progressive technocrat called Godwin Obaseki,  has in the last seven years, worked tirelessly behind the scene for the rapid infrastructural resurgence in the state. In the face of dwindling oil revenues, Obaseki and his team have had a herculean task in assisting the Comrade Governor focus emphasis on alternative sources of revenue which has in no small way stabilised the state economy.

It may not be enough for Edo people to pray, as Comrade Oshiomhole admonished recently, “for God to give us a governor that will put Edo people first, respect the traditional institution and that will work for the unity of our people across the 192 wards”. Edo people  must look at the contenders, sift the serious from the pretenders, shun sentimental and primodal interests and focus on the serious issues of passion for development of our state and the ability and capacity to harness and utilise most creatively the resources available to the state. This is where Obaseki who has shared in the Comrade Governor’s vision and mission these past years stands the best chance in keeping hope alive that the legacies of the Oshiomhole administration of which he has been a significant part will be sustained.

Hindsight informs us that the most development in our state has been achieved when it was administered by technocrats with little or no discernible political background. Brigadier-General Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia (rtd) was a military officer when he ruled Midwest Region (now Edo and Delta states) and wrought so much infrastructural and industrial development on the region. He was not a politician.  Late Prof. Ambrose Folorunsho Alli was holding a professorial chair in morbid anatomy at the University of Benin when he became governor of Bendel State in 1979. He was not a politician. His administration recorded monumental achievement in both infrastructure and human capital development. Till date, Edo and Delta people cannot forget him and the administration he headed. Comrade Oshiomhole was not an active politician when he became governor in 2008.  In fact,  he may still not be rightly described as one in the strict sense of it. He joins the league of Dr. Ogbemudia and Prof. Alli as those whose administrations have done the greatest good to the greatest number of Edo people. Others who can be labelled hardcore politicians failed to deliver appreciable dividends to the people. In our search therefore,  Edo people must look beyond those who have remained on the political dance-stage for some time without visible meaningul contribution to our march to progress and development.  We must search out the new breed leaders in the mould of Comrade Oshiomhole who have the qualities enunciated by him. All those jostling for the APC ticket are good people in their own right but we must pick the one who, after winning the election, will deliver the greatest good to the majority of Edo people. The Comrade Governor must lead while we the people follow in this ultimate search for a brand new and stainless governor for Edo State in 2016.

  • Edo APC chieftain seeks enhanced community policing

A governorship aspirant on the platform of Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Godwin Obaseki, has called for the strengthening of local security outfits, popularly called vigilantes across the state.

This followed the recent twin bank robbery at Igarra, Edo State.

In his New Year message to Edo State residents, the politician noted that for the police to effectively protect the people, there should be a collaboration between the communities and the police.

He cited the case of the Igarra and Makeke vigilance groups, which successfully foiled the twin bank robbery in Igarra.

Obaseki said, in line with APC’s manifesto, the design of an enduring community policing strategy would secure the lives and property of the residents from Gelegele to Somorika.

The governorship aspirant urged the people to always support the police with information that could help in the fight against insecurity.

Also, Obaseki pledged to deploy his goodwill in the private sector within and outside Nigeria to encourage the sector to show interest in the Gelegele-Atlantic Ocean link Port.

The politician said it has the capacity to open up the state’s economy to other parts of Nigeria and the world.

He added that as a Financial Management expert, he would not allow Edo State economy, with its potential, to be less than 10 in the ranking of Nigerian states, especially in doing business and youth employment.

Obaseki said Edo State would continue to leverage on its strategic location in Nigeria as an artery to push its economy to greater heights for the benefits of the people.
