The Chairman, Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB), Mrs. Ozavize Salami, has disclosed that the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) is transforming educational outcomes for Edo’s youths in all public schools by enabling growth and prosperity across the state.

She revealed that academic activities began immediately, with the September 30 this year’s resumption for all primary and junior secondary schools in Edo, since it had been a long holiday.

Salami, in Benin, the Edo state capital, disclosed that necessary steps were taken by teachers, headteachers, and other stakeholders to ensure that the learners returned to a conducive environment and enjoyed an enriched learning experience during this first term.

She said: “We are excited to welcome our pupils back to school. The EdoBEST programme in our primary and junior secondary schools continues to focus on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy skills, while we intensify our intervention programmes targeted at pupils who are falling behind?

“The EdoBEST programme has reached its highest-ever enrolment figure of 388,000+ pupils across all 1,289 state-owned primary and junior secondary schools in Edo State.

“Governor Godwin Obaseki has addressed the issue of teacher shortage by approving the recruitment of 5,500 additional teachers, half of whom are high-performing Edo Supporting Teachers to Achieve Results (EdoSTAR) fellows, who have been working in the state-owned schools for over two sessions.”

She said: “Edo SUBEB reaffirms its mandate to provide quality education to all Edo children of school age, under the principles of equity and access.

“We wish to advise parents and guardians in Edo State to take advantage of the quality education available, by enrolling their children and wards in EdoBEST schools.”

Salami also urged parents and guardians not to continue to waste money in private schools, when their children and wards could get much better education from the highly-motivated and much-better teachers in Edo public schools.
