  • EdoJobs, CADD centre partner on training for 100 youths

    In furtherance of its plans to equip youths with in-demand skills for self-sustenance, the Edo State Government through the Edo Skills Development Agency (EdoJobs) has partnered with the CADD Centre Nigeria in providing training for 100 Edo youths for project management and engineering design.

    The training is coming on the heels of the launch of the Edo Production Centre, a multi-purpose production centre for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) engaged in the manufacturing sector. The centre is fitted with state-of-the-art facilities suited for manufacturing, including 24-hour electricity supply.

    Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, said the training would upskill engineering graduates in the state with top-notch expertise in engineering design so they can contribute to the state’s industrialisation drive.

    She noted that the training is part of the overall plans for the production centre, as it serves as a capacity building component to prepare a skilled workforce to drive activities at the production centres in the state.

    According to her, “We have a good partner in the CADD Centre as they have proven expertise in this field. The training programme which is open to Engineering graduates will equip them with the right skills to drive innovation in the state.

    A technical partner on the programme and Executive Director, Riverbank Technologies and Engineering Limited, Mr. Ayoola Jolayemi, said the training for 100 engineers is a pilot phase of an elaborate plan to train 1000 young engineers in the state    

    According to him, “The beneficiaries of this skill development drive will be getting equipped in Engineering Designs and Project Management, using the signature CADD Centre training methodology which is respected globally for  decades and in five continents of the world.”

  • EdoJobs, Curators University train more Edo youths on data science

    In an effort to groom programmers and techpreneurs in Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s skills development platform, EdoJobs, has partnered with Curators University to train more youths in Edo State on data science at the Edo Innovation Hub.

    Senior Special Assistant to Edo State Governor on Job Creation and Skills Development and Head, EdoJobs, Mrs Ukinebo Dare, disclosed this in a chat with journalists, noting that the training is in line with the governor’s pledge to create 200,000 jobs in the state.

    The training programme would be for the second batch of trainees, as a batch had earlier been trained to deploy data science and machine learning skills in solving societal problems. Members of that batch participated in the National Breast Cancer Hackathon organised by Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria and Access Bank and clinched the top two spots.

    Speaking on the training for the second batch, Mrs Dare said the state government is confident that the 5-day intensive training programme would groom a new set of innovators who would provide solutions to local problems in the state.

    According to her, “We are partnering with Curators University to train more youths on data science. The training will be for five days. This will give them the opportunity to learn how to deploy data in solving problems. Those expected at the training include university graduates, undergraduates or school leavers, who are interested in data science. The training will hold at the Edo Innovation Hub.”

    She noted that as the world continues to become accustomed to new technologies, the need for data scientists would increase as they help others understand information better.

    She said, “We are excited with the results we are getting from the different training ongoing at the Hub. We want to assure those interested in this training that they will get the best of practical and theoretical training in data science. It is open to those studying any course, aside computer scientists or economists from the universities.”

  • US applauds Obaseki’s economic reforms, fight against human trafficking

    The Charge d’ Affairs and Deputy Chief of Missions United States (US) Embassy in Abuja, David Young, has applauded the Edo State Government’s unrelenting and well-articulated efforts in creating jobs for youths as well as initiatives to curb human trafficking and illegal migration in the state.

    Young, who made the submission during a courtesy visit to the Government House, in Benin City, Edo State, commended the state government’s efforts to create jobs and opportunities for youths in the state, noting, “We are here to talk about your plans to revitalize the economy and create jobs and opportunities for young people.”

    The US diplomat said the state government through the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking (ETAHT) is working tirelessly to combat trafficking in persons, applauding “the excellent effort and steps taken in Edo by the inter-agency taskforce to arrest the menace. It is commendable that the state government signed the anti-human trafficking law and set up the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking. We salute the Taskforce. We also commend the anti-trafficking law which moves to codify prosecution for those involved in trafficking in persons.”

    He added that the delegation is in the state to explore areas in which it can provide support to the government to prevent young people from falling victims of human traffickers.

    Young also praised the collaboration between the state government and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), stating: “We commend the information sharing and coordination on prosecution with NAPTIP in the fight against trafficking in persons which are in line with the three P’s strategy of Prevention, Protection and Prosecution, to move against trafficking, a horrific crime with adverse effect on young people.”

    On his part, the Acting Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, noted that the state government realised that “the only way we to move the state forward is to keep the youth engage.”

    Shaibu blamed human trafficking on bad governance in the past which caused the people to lose hope in the country, noting that the state government is changing the narrative with its economic reforms and skills development programmes, such as

    He said EdoJobs provides job opportunities for youths through capacity building, equipping them with in-demand employability skills for gainful employment as well as empowerment programmes and training to make them successful entrepreneurs.

    Shaibu added that youths are engaged in agricultural activities, and also in the Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) scheme to help in intelligence gathering for security agencies in the state.

  • EdoJobs takes skills devt mandate to Uhunmwode, Orhionmwon LGAs

    … completes orientation programme for school leavers

     

    As part of efforts to actualise Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki’s skills development mandate, EdoJobs, the state’s platform for skills development and jobs creation, is carrying out a census of unemployed youths in Uhunmwode and Orhionmwon Local Government Areas, to identify skills gaps and capacity building need of the two local councils.

    Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists, said that the census will help EdoJobs fashion training modules to fit the needs of the communities in the councils.

    According to her, “During the registration held on Wednesday July 11, Friday July 13 and on Monday July 16, there was massive turnout as many persons from all the wards in Uhunmwode and Orhionmwon Local Government Areas were registered on the EdoJobs database.”

    “The Special Assistants from all the wards supported the exercise by mobilising members of their communities for the exercise. With the registration, we will be able to identify the skills gap, train youths and match them with job opportunities.”

    She said there is an elaborate plan to revamp selected Skills Acquisition Centres in the communities in preparation for the train-to-hire programme.

    Meanwhile, EdoJobs has concluded plans to partner the technology company, Bits Global, to train 100 school leavers on in-demand technology skills.

    According to Dare, “As part of Governor Obaseki’s promise to create 200,000 jobs, we have entered into partnership with Bits Global to train 100 under-privileged school leavers on basic ICT skills.”

    She explained that the training will assist the school leavers develop early interest in exploring opportunities in Nigeria’s evolving technology eco-system.

    She added, “The beneficiaries praised Governor Obaseki for the initiative. Some of them never had an encounter with the computer prior to the orientation week.”

    The orientation week covered lessons on the importance of computing, Internet, MS PowerPoint, Basics of presentation, Typing, MS Word, among others.

    The participants were carefully selected from the community hosting the Edo Innovation Hub, “Edo Innovates.” The training is specifically designed for young school leavers of 16 – 24 years of age.

    EdoBits is a project set up by the Edo State Government, Butterfly Works, and EkoBits to reduce unemployment in Edo State and aid youth in acquiring internationally-certified training. It is licensed by an entity called We are Bits based in the Netherlands

  • Edo, security agencies to go after fake recruitment firm

    …Obaseki urges job seekers to be circumspect of recruitment centres

     

    The Edo State government has distanced itself from the illegal activities of a consulting firm, KAI Environmental, which has been collecting money from unsuspecting job seekers in the state with a promise to offer them jobs in the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability.

    Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the state government is working with security organisations to bring the perpetrators to justice.

    “We received a report that KAI Environmental, a consulting firm, has been defrauding unsuspecting Edo people and residents by posing as a recruitment agency for the Edo State government.

    “We have informed the police and other relevant security agencies to arrest the people behind the scam and bring them to justice,” Osagie said.

    He explained that “EdoJobs is the only platform that recruits workers for the Edo State government,” and advised that “any other company that parades itself as a recruitment body or company for Edo State is out to scam job seekers.”

    He warned that “the Obaseki administration does not collect money for jobs. We have digitised and centralised the process of giving jobs to qualified people in the state and all that is required of job seekers is to simply upload their applications on the EdoJobs portal, and they will be contacted by officials of government. Job seekers should be circumspect and report any organisation that parades itself as a recruitment company for the state government to security agencies.”

    According to the report, the consulting firm,‎ KAI environmental, has allegedly fleeced job seekers in the state of millions of naira.

    “The firm which has its operational Base at Bins Hotel, along Ekenhuan Road in Benin-City, was said to be collecting N2, 000 for registration, N2000 for handouts during training and N15, 000 for uniforms‎ ‎from applicants.

    “Already, the first batch of 150 applicants are said to have concluded training and awaiting to be dispatch to their place of work,” the report said.

     

  • Obaseki set to launch innovation hub in Edo

    In furtherance of its commitment to equip youths with skills and expertise to drive inclusive growth and development, the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, through its skills development arm, Edojobs, is set for the launch of the first ever state-backed innovation hub to activate and drive the state’s fledging technology ecosystem.

    Set for launch on June 14, the hub would be run in partnership with Nigeria’s leading technology-based organisations, such as Siemens, Tech4Dev, Microsoft, Impact Hub, Curators University (an American University), HotelsNg, among others. It will train over 1,000 youths will be trained based on their interest in data management, programming, basic digital skills, and artificial intelligence.

    The hub, to be known as Edo Innovation Hub, is to be located at the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) in Benin City, which is currently being renovated.

    Obaseki said “the innovation hub would serve as a facility for training youths in the state and it would also serve as a center for follow-up trainings for youths who are participating in similar training programmes organised by the state government through its skills development arm popularly known as EdoJobs.

    “Services on offer by the firms include an incubation and pre-incubation programme, acceleration programme, business clinics and co-working facilities.”

    He added that the “Innovation Hub would be equipped with thousands of computers supported with high-speed connectivity.”

    The innovation hub is expected to play a major role in facilitating the realisation of Obaseki’s campaign promise to put an end to unemployment in Edo State by providing 200,000 jobs.

    Head, EdoJobs, and Senior Special Asistant (SSA) to the Governor on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs, Ukinebo Dare, said that the innovation hub would open up the space for the development of critical manpower for Edo’s burgeoning investment climate.

    She noted that efforts are being made to ensure that the state integrates and benefits from the gains of a digital economy, which is why digital literacy features prominently in the offerings of the different programmes at the cluster.

    According to her, “There is a focus on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Small and Medium Enterprises development is key for us as they have the potentials to engage a higher number of people.”

    She noted that the hub has a number of programmes that are designed to help small businesses scale up and plug into the digital economy.

    According to her, “We have several programmes in place to work with SMEs to incubate start-ups and develop them and assist them to grow. All of these form the strategy in place to create jobs.”

    She said the Pan Atlantic University is also expected to come in and with an SME tool kit boot camp for entrepreneurs to better prepare them for wealth creation.

    Other programmes on the lineup are those of Prof. Laura Kinnard of Drake University, United States of America (USA), who would train executives on leadership, organisational behavior, management and marketing.

    Impact Hub will create a co-working space and incubation center where individuals can interact with other start-ups; Curators University, will teach Edo youths the rudiments of data science and artificial intelligence, among others.

  • EdoJobs partners First Bank, Interswitch to train 42 new employees

    As part of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s drive to create jobs and improve financial inclusion, the Edo State Government has through Edo Jobs, employed 42 persons as enumerators and partnered with Interswitch Financial Inclusion Services to train the new employees from the three senatorial districts of the state on agency banking.

    The exercise is the first in a series of activities that will roll out over 500 agency bankers in partnership with Firstbank Nigeria and Interswitch.

    The skills development program equips beneficiaries with skills and expertise to become third party agents for the processing of cash deposits, withdrawals and payment of utility bills.

    Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Skills Development and Jobs, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, said that the training is in part, a fulfilment of the Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration’s promise to create 200,000 jobs in the state.

    She added that the trainees will also serve as enumerators for the EdoJobs programme, as they have been deployed to provide assisted registrations on the EdoJobs portal from all LGAs in Edo.

    Noting that the state government is determined to empower youths to become self-reliant, she said, “At Edo Jobs, we want to address the issue of job creation wholistically. So, we are leaving no stone unturned. Much as we are training people on how to be the best in the workplace, we are also empowering them to be self-reliant with bespoke training packages.”

    On the partnership for agency banking with FirstBank, she said, “As part of its commitment towards the development of Edo State, First Bank of Nigeria is partnering with EdoJobs on training and equipping of 500 small business owners on Agency Banking across all Local Government Areas.”

    She said, “Agent banking is the provision of financial services to customers by a third party (agent) such as cash deposits and withdrawals, payment of utility bills and other banking services. The partner will be branding the business location as well as providing necessary tools to help drive publicity and business profitability.

     

  • Edo trains 150 youths in Career Kickstarter Programme

    Edo State Government has commenced a three weeks employability skills training for 150 youths in its Career Kickstarter programme to equip them with relevant technical and soft skills for the workplace.

    The state’s Skills Development platform, EdoJobs, organised the training after short-listing participants from its database. The 150 youths are the second batch of trainees under the Career Kickstarter programme, being executed by GidiJobs.

    Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Skills Development and Jobs, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, said that the Career KickStarter Programme was developed to help disadvantaged youths become competitive and employable within the job market.

    “It is a career building platform aimed at bridging the gap between the knowledge gained from the formal education sector and the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to function effectively in today’s global work environment,” she said.

    She noted that the initiative is being championed in a bid to create 200,000 jobs by 2020 by the Governor Godwin Obaseki led-administration, adding that the training will culminate in a jobs fare.

    According to her, the modules to be taken includes, business writing, accounts for non-Accountants, problem-solving and use of initiative, workplace ethics and telephone etiquette, professional dress sense and confidence building.

    Others, she said, are excellence in customer service, selling skills and Information and Communication Technology skills.

    She said the target is for beneficiaries to become directly engaged/self-sufficient upon completion of their training.

    The Edo State Government through its job creation initiative, EdoJobs, has launched a skills development programme to prepare unemployed youths in the state for employment opportunities and as employers of labour.

    Addressing journalists during a press conference to announce the launch of the programme, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Skill Acquisition and Job Creation, Ukinebo Dare, said “Through the skills development programme, the Godwin Obaseki-led administration has been attracting investors that have need for highly skilled manpower to the state.”

    She explained that the state government is partnering with organisations that are specialised in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), mobile phone and laptop repairs, automobile mechanics among others, to train youths across the three senatorial districts in the state.

    The training she said “is designed in such a way that some programmes have stipend packages, start-up packs while others have business support packages for trainees. The programme will also address the needs of the participating business partners and individuals.”

    Ukinebo added that youths will be trained in various skills to meet the increasing demands for highly skilled workforce in the state.

    “The objective of the programme is to enable the state government prepare youths as entrepreneurs and employers of labour in line with the vision of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to create 200,000 jobs.”

    Ukinebo said that the programme is open to youths who are indigenes and those who reside in the state, adding, “The programme will enhance the employability of youths and enable them maximise their potential. It will prepare the youths for different job opportunities. Those trained will be matched with employers who have vacancies in the state through the Edojobs portal.

    “The programme will assist the state government supply employers skilled labour force as the EdoJobs initiative has grown from a job matching to job creation platform.”

    One of the partners of the programme, Slot Academy, represented by Collins Uwadiae, said, “Slot Academy is partnering with Edo State Government to complement the strides of Governor Obaseki in creating jobs for youths. The Academy will train the youths at zero cost to prepare youths as entrepreneurs.

    Chief Inspector of IFEST Foundation, another partner, Engr. Anthony Okogue, said: “IFEST Foundation is partnering with EdoJobs to render technical and vocational training in motor and vehicle mechanic. We are partnering with Edojobs to train Edo youths in modern motor and vehicle mechanics.”

    Also in attendance were beneficiaries of skills development programmes organised by EdoJobs.

    Isioma Deborah said the programme has helped her with knowledge of branding and packaging which she is applying in her business. “Before the training, I was just doing my normal business but with the help of EdoJobs’ partners I have been able to put my business on several social media platforms and my customers are increasing. I really appreciate them,” she said.

    Similarly, Loveth Osagie, who is undergoing training in fashion design, said the programme has helped her discover her innate abilities.

    To fast-track employment creation for youths in Edo State, the state government will on March 2, launch EdoJobs 2.0, the second phase of its skills development programme.

    In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, the state government said it has sealed partnership agreement with a number of firms, including SLOT Academy, CareerKickstartprogramme, Law Autos, LevantarSoap Factory, to train youths on information and communication technology (ICT) hardware repairs, vehicle maintenance and repairs, among others.

    EdoJobs is an initiative of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to tackle youth unemployment by creating a minimum of 200,000 jobs by the year 2020. The programme is expected to increase private sector involvement and investment in the state’s economy, to be achieved by employability trainings and skills acquisition, providing support for business growth and exposing youths to employment opportunities.

    According to Dare, “Since its inception EdoJobs has created jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities in various roles including agriculture, traffic management, accounting, administration, ICT, estate management, sales and many others.

    “As a result of this, the Skills Development Programme has relaunched EdoJobs 2.0. The mission of the Skill Development Programme is to implement a coordinated and effective approach to skills development and job creation in the state. This they intend to achieve through three major initiatives.”

    She said the programmes are open to Edo youths from the three the senatorial districts in the state, adding “Some of the trainees will be pooled from Libya returnees in Edo State. There are also job vacancies available on the portal.

    She said the expanded skill development programme includes EdoJobs, EdoStartups and Skillup initiatives, stressing, “EdoJobs is targeted at training participants for hire into various industries and also matching qualified applicants to available job openings and internship slots within the state. EdoStartups will support aspiring and existing entrepreneurs registered on EdoJobs with skills and support to aid and grow their businesses, while the Skill Up Initiative is to revamp institutions in the state with a view to upgrading them to world-class skill delivery standards.”

    Dare charged job seekers to check the portal regularly and apply online for opportunities under the EdoJobs and EdoStartUps initiatives.

    According to her, “A partnership with Slot Academy to train participants on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Phone and computer repairs, with internship opportunities for deserving participants. Successful participants would be assisted in starting up their own businesses.

    “For Automobile companies, we have Law Auto, IFES and Leana Garage, which will train young men and ladies on vehicle maintenance and repairs. After the training, they are eligible for internship and a start-up packages to support these participants.”

    She continued, “There is a partnership with LevantarSoap factory to train residents on production, employ some as staff in the factory and empower others with support to start small scale production. There is another partnership with the CareerKickstartprogramme to train individuals and connect them to employers, which is also supported by Oxfam.”

    “EdoJobs2.0 will serve as a hub of opportunities for all Edo residents. We encourage business owners to partner with Edo Jobs by recruiting from our pool of well-trained applicants.”
