  • Ugwuanyi, Ubosi declare assets

    Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Speaker of the House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi, have declared their assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

    Lawmakers in the current and past dispensation have also complied with the directive.

    State Director of CCB Mrs. Lucy Ijetta stated this in an interview with reporters yesterday. She, however, said some exco members in previous administrations were yet to comply. These include seven ex-commissioners and five special advisers who served between 2015 and 2019.

    She warned that if they fail to regularize their assets declaration with the CCB by July ending, they would be prosecuted.

    According to her, 24 commissioners and 15 special advisers served in the last dispensation, but only 17 former commissioners and 10 special advisers had complied with the regularization rule.

    She added: “Among the 24 former commissioners, 17 have ended their tenures with us while 10 of the former special advisers had also done the same thing. The defaulters have until the end of July to do so, failure of which I will list their names as defaulters and forward to our head office for onward transmission to the CCB tribunal.”

  • Enugu Assembly passes 37 bills, ends 3rd legislative session

    Enugu State House of Assembly Thursday ended its third legislative session with the Speaker, Edward Ubosi calling on members to continue to sustain the cordiality and dedication to duty for the peace and development of the state.

    Ubosi in a valedictory speech to mark the day said that the Assembly has passed 37 bills into law, stressing that the legislature remains the key pivotal arm of government whose primary responsibilities include law-making, oversight, allocation of resources, representation among others.

    The speaker disclosed that the house received 41 bills out of which 32 were executive bills while nine were member bills.

    According to him there were three outstanding bills which are currently undergoing various legislative stages before passed into law.

    Ubosi however, disclosed that 11 motions were adopted by the house pointing out that the resolutions from the motions had contributed to the good governance the people of the state are enjoying.

    Ubosi while appraising his colleagues for the contributions they made on the floor of the House as well as their oversight functions said that without them, there was nothing he could have done as the speaker.

    Appreciating his colleagues for passing vote of confidence on him and the principal officers, he said it makes him jittery because it meant more work.

    “This is the third time you are passing vote of confidence on me and the principal officers.  When you pass vote of confidence on me, it makes me jittery because it means more work.

    ” I thank God for the kind of people He gave me.  Some speakers serve two weeks, some one month but I have been your Speaker for three years,” he said.

    Ubosi specifically commended his deputy, Donatus Uzogbado for being a dependable ally.  “He is a good man.  If I become a speaker any time again in my life, I’ll like to have him as my deputy,” he said.

    The Deputy Speaker, Donatus Uzogbado who took the first shot while reacting to the Speaker’s address described Ubosi as a good driver who has been driving the house well.

    Uzogbado commended the speaker for the renovation of the chambers, the procurement of electronic equipment and reconstruction of the main gate to the Assembly.

    The chairman House Committee on Information, Hon Paul Nnajofor representing Nkanu East, said that the speaker was a blessing to the house and therefore, moved a vote of confidence on the speaker and other principal officers of the House.

    Member representing Nsukka West, Hon Dame Nkechi Omeje-Ogbu commended the speaker for ensuring that the House remained stable and peaceful, unlike in other places were lawmakers fight and quarrel.

    Enugu Assembly pledges to pass VAPP bill into law

    The Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr Edward Ubosi has expressed the commitment of the assembly to pass the Violence Against Persons Prohibited ( VAPP ) bill.

    Ubosi gave the assurance in Enugu on Thursday during a Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum organised by the Women Aid Collective ( WACOL ).

    The speaker, who was represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Mr Philip Nnamani said that the duties of the legislature include to make laws that would protect women and other victims of violence.

    He expressed dismay at the high rate of violence against women and pledged that he would do his best to ensure that the bill was passed into law.

    The sponsor of the bill, Mr Chukwuka Eneh said that the bill had scaled the first reading and promised that it would be passed in no distant time.

    “I am very much interested in the bill because it is gender oriented and a lot of people especially women are vulnerable to violence,’’ he said.

    Earlier, the Executive Director of WACOL, Prof. Joy Ezeilo said that the organisation had recorded over 700 cases of sexual violence noting that it was not just peculiar to women but men inclusive.

    Ezeilo noted that the men were more traumatized because most times they died in silence while protecting their ego.

    She called for greater respect for women, girls and all as well as an end on gender based violence in the society.

    The executive director promised the enforcement of the bill when passed into law.

    A sexual violence victim and teenager narrated how she was raped by a commercial motorcyclist at gunpoint on her way to school.

    She said the man took her in his bike, got to a lonely place and pointed a gun at her and raped her.

    The victim said she managed to get to a busy place where was taken to a hospital.

    According to her, few days later she saw the man in his bike and alerted the police with the help of WACOL who arrested and prosecuted him.

    She said that the culprit was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment.

    Another victim of domestic violence and housewife, Mrs Sandra Iheji narrated how her husband beat her and impregnated her house help and threw her out of the house with nothing.

    Iheji, who is a mother of three, said that the estranged husband made away with her two kids leaving her with nothing.

    Enugu: Ugwuanyi signs 2018 budget of N103.5bn into law

    Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Monday signed the 2018 budget of N103.5 billion into law.

    Signing the document in Enugu, Ugwuanyi reiterated his administration’s readiness to deliver good governance and harness the potential in the state.

    The governor, however, expressed his commitment to ensure the full and prompt implementation of the budget.

    Earlier, Mr Edward Ubosi, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, said that the legislators had after wide consultation and robust debate jerked up the budget estimate.

    Ubosi said that the increase became necessary in order to accommodate the various road projects in the state that needed urgent attention.

    He said that the budget was realistic and accommodated the pressing needs of the state.

    The speaker said that the 2018 budget reduced external and internal borrowings of the state by 60 per cent and would not drag the state into any form of indebtedness.

    Ubosi said that the gains of the 2018 budget had demonstrated that the State Board of Internal Revenue was up to its responsibilities.
    “We are happy with the way the revenue board is working to reduce stress from the government but they should not put hardship on our people,” he said.

    He commended the governor for the prudent management of the state’s resources.

    The governor had on Dec. 28, 2017 presented a budget estimate of N98.5 billion to the state assembly.

    The budget was passed on Feb. 12.

    Enugu Assembly unveils trophies for Boxing Talent Hunt finals

    The Enugu State House of Assembly has unveiled the trophies that would be given to the champions in different categories of the state’s Boxing Talent Hunt finals.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the trophies were unveiled with the kits procured for the bouts which will begin in the first week of the October.

    The Speaker, Enugu House Assembly, Chief Edward Ubosi, told newsmen on Wednesday in Enugu that the grand finale of the boxing talent hunt would be staged in the first week of October.

    “Football seems to have been given all attention, hence the need to diversify into other sports.Ubosi, who noted that governments and philanthropists focus on developing football at all levels, said that there was need to diversify into other sports.

    “We are not only ambassadors of football but other sports as well. So, that is why we want the youth street fighters to engage in something meaningful, boxing that will earn them a living.

    “Now that we have finished the first and the second phases of the talent hunt is being concluded, we are targeting the finals to commence in the first week of the October,’’ he said.

    Ubosi said that he had been sponsoring Abakpa League and the Trans-Ekulu League football league in Enugu during December period.

    “I used to sponsor Abakpa League and Trans-Ekulu League football league and I assure you that after this boxing talent hunt, we are going to embark on developing another sport,’’ he said.

    He thanked Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu for the manner his administration was developing the state.

    He promised to train the boxers that would perform well in the competition to develop their careers in boxing as well as in their academic pursuit.

    The Enugu State Chairman of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Prince Cornelius Nnaji, said that the chairmen of the 17 local government areas of the state supported the Speakers’ project.

    Rex Arum, who is the Chairman of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, commended the Speaker for sponsoring the grassroots boxing talent hunt to raise boxers in the state.

    He recalled that Nigeria used to produce acclaimed boxers and wondered why the interest in the sport had waned.

    Contributing, Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, the Coordinator of the project, said that he was a product of grassroots boxing talent hunt.

    “I was discovered in Abakaliki during my secondary school days and I never knew that I will one day become a world Lightweight champion,’’ he said.

    Enugu Assembly passes amended Basic Education Bill

    The Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the amended Enugu State Universal Basic Education Bill.

    The bill was passed following the consideration of the report on the bill presented during plenary by the Joint Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Judiciary, Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges.

    The Chairman, Assembly Committee on Education, Mr. Matthew Ugwueze, while presenting the report, explained that the UBE, which earlier covered primary education, had been expanded to include Junior Secondary School (JSS).

    In his remarks, the Speaker of the assembly, Chief Edward Ubosi, commended the committee and other members for a job well done.

    Ubosi said that the passage of the bill would help boost basic education in the state.

    The assembly adjourned sitting to July 18.
