Timaya explains rift with Eedris Abdulkareem

Afrobeats star Timaya has opened up about his strained relationship with veteran singer Eedris Abdulkareem, attributing it to a lack of personal connection.

In a recent interview with Naija FM in Lagos, Timaya dismissed comparisons between their personalities.

“I don’t talk like Eedris. I don’t behave like him. Nobody is afraid of him because he talks too much,” Timaya said. “I don’t even want people to be afraid of me. I respect myself so that people will respect me.”

Reflecting on their history, Timaya revealed that he was once a member of Abdulkareem’s band but noted they never shared a close relationship.

He added that Abdulkareem made little effort to foster one.

Timaya noted: “I have never had any problem with Eedris. It was just a relationship of the boss and apprentice. I don’t even think he knows my name at that time. I only gave him a shoutout because he was part of my success story. We don’t have any reason to communicate.

“When I was serving in his band, he didn’t had any reason to build a relationship with me. When people are serving you don’t act like you’re tolerating them, treat them like family because you don’t know tomorrow.”

Stop promoting frivolities, Eedris Abdulkareem tells ‘new cats’

Singer Eedris Abdulkareem has criticised the younger generation of musicians, accusing them of profiting from the efforts of veterans like himself without contributing to the betterment of society.

He urged them to use their platforms to address societal issues rather than just promoting frivolous content.

Abdulkareem expressed disappointment, stating that the younger generation is selfish and only concerned with personal gain, neglecting their responsibility to use their influence for the greater good.

He warned the selfish approach will ultimately harm them and their families, as they will be affected by the same societal ills they ignore.

In an interview with SRTV, Abdulkareem said: “The younger generation of [Nigerian] musicians are not ready.

“They are just there to capitalise on what we worked for and make money for themselves. They are very selfish people.

“They feel they and their family have Visas to flee the country if crisis arises but they should remember that their extended family members don’t have Visas.

“They will all die here. So, don’t be selfish. Use your music to talk about ills in the society as much as you are using your music to promote frivolities.”

Eedris Abdulkareem took a bullet for Nigerian artists – Obi Asika

Prominent talent manager and music executive Obi Asika has argued controversial singer Eedris Abdulkareem took a bullet for other Nigerian artists.

He said he succeeded in doing this after the poor treatment of local artists during American rapper 50 Cent’s concert in Nigeria in 2004.

He spoke in a recent episode of Hip TV programme, Trending.

Asika said: “The basic situation was this, Nigerian brands did not respect Nigerian artists. They made Nigerian talents feel like they had to beg to get on stage. They diminished them. Now, they are complaining that Nigerian artists are costing too much. It is because the brands didn’t respect the first set.

“Eedris was one of the first sets. He was one of the biggest artists in the country. He told the organisers of the show that he wanted the same rights as 50 Cent.

“They did a show in Lagos, they were supposed to go to Benin or Port Harcourt, so they got into the plane… 50 Cent wasn’t even there at that time. Eedris went to sit in the business class properly to discuss collaboration with 50 Cent but he was bounced out and an altercation ensued.
