Ebola: Mikel arrives Eagles’ camp, armed with gloves

Super Eagles midfielder, Mikel Obi, arrived the team training camp in Calabar armed with several hand gloves.

He arrived the Eagles camp as scheduled and told Stephen Keshi he has at least four hand gloves as part of his own personal fight against Ebola, africanFootball.com reports.

“Coach I have up to four hand gloves and if you don’t mind, I can hand one pair to you,” Mikel told Keshi with the rest of the squad reeling with laughter.

Nigeria has recorded five deaths since the Ebola outbreak last month.

However, the spirit in camp is very buoyant with the arrival of the superstars and Keshi said he expects the best from the players against Congo on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 17 players have reported to camp with more players expected before the evening training after only nine players trained in the morning.

Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Efe Ambrose, Kenneth Omeruo, Juwon Oshaniwa, Sone Aluko, and stand-in captain Austin Ejide have all arrived the team camp.

Efe Ambrose eyes treble with Celtic

Super Eagles right full  back, Efe Ambrose has  warned other clubs campaigning in the Scottish elite league that his side Celtic will be gunning for the Treble which eluded them in the outgone season under Manager Neil Lennon.

Ambrose helped his team go 30 points clear at the top with a 5-2 hammering of the second-placed Dons last weekend then insisted there is no way Celtic will relinquish their hold on the Scottish game next term.

The Nigeria defender believes the desire to land a domestic clean sweep will make the champions an even tougher club next season.

“If we get things right I don’t think any team can get close to Celtic. The league is getting better and teams are trying to compete with us. So the more they try to compete, the more we will try to step up. We will become better players because we know there will be a challenge in the league,” he said.

“To keep winning you have to do the right things and have the winning mentality. You need to have the right players and manager – everyone needs to be together. We have to aim for the Treble and to do better in the Champions League. I think we have the calibre of player to do that. Last season we won the Double and this year we have just one trophy. The Treble is what is left for us to achieve and that is the motivation next season.”

Ambrose revealed that Lennon fired up his players to beat Aberdeen by warning them not to become the first Celtic team to lose to the Dons three times in a row.

He added: “Aberdeen is a good team. They have good players and we give them a lot of respect because of the kind of players they have and what they have achieved this season.

“Nobody can take that away from them. They were the first side to beat us in the league and they knocked us out of the Scottish Cup. So for this we owed them a big game, we wanted to put on a big performance at Celtic Park.

“We wanted to step up our game, create chances and score against them because when we played against Aberdeen before we failed to make the most of our chances.

“In this game we were better up front because we took our chances. We didn’t want to be the first side that lost three times to this team. The manager put that in our head before the game.

“At Celtic our priority is winning. That is a mentality we have no matter who we play but Aberdeen are a great side and we had to give everything because we knew we could not lose to them again at Celtic Park”.

Celtic defender hails Efe Ambrose partnership

Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk says he’s proud of his debut season in Scotland and believes his defensive partnership with Efe Ambrose will continue to get better.
The 22-year-old joined the Scottish champions from FC Gronigen in the summer and has played his part in helping Fraser Forster set a new club clean sheet record.
Van Dijk has been paired with Nigerian defender Ambrose for the majority of the campaign, seeing Neil Lennon’s men 21 points ahead of Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership table.
However the club suffered disappointment in the Scottish Cup, going down 2-1 to the Dons at Parkhead.
Despite the cup exit, the Dutchman views the campaign as a success on a personal level and spoke about how he’s adapted to his new surroundings.
He told the Celtic View: “It feels very good to be unbeaten in the league so far and I’m very proud of it.
“I think the whole team should be proud. It’s a big team performance to do this and also a personal achievement for me too because I’ve never experienced this before in my life, so I’m very happy.
“It’s a good partnership I have with Efe Ambrose – he’s a good guy. Off and on the pitch I talk with him a lot and I learn from him and I think he can learn from me too.
“It’s definitely me who is the talker, though. It’s something that is natural for me, to talk a lot during the game, not only to Efe but to all the other players.
“Fraser Forster communicates well, just like any other goalkeeper but he is exceptional in his qualities. He’s an unbelievably good goalkeeper. I’ve never trained or played with a keeper like him. He’s a good guy too who is enjoyable to play with.
“You hope that when you come to a club like Celtic that you can do well. You have something in mind, you hope that it goes to plan and so far for me, winning games and breaking records means it has, so I’m happy.”

    • Says CHAN Eagles look good to make squad

Celtic of Scotland and Super Eagles defender Efe Ambrose has predicted an intense battle for an inclusion into Nigeria’s 2014 World Cup squad, because of the dazzling forms of Nigerian players both home and abroad since last year.

Ambrose reasoned that Nigeria’s performance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) has opened the door for home-based players to fight for shirts in the team, a situation which he said was good for the country’s preparations for the World Cup holding in Brazil this June.

“Honestly speaking, I don’t think any player is sure of a starting place in the team for the 2014 World Cup now, because there is going to be a hot contention for making the squad as a result of heartwarming performances from Nigerian players plying their trade at home and abroad.

Nigerian players are really doing well in Europe since the leagues began and some that have not been called have been playing well for the coach to look their way. This is very good for the team and I have redoubled my efforts to play regularly for Celtic and help the club win laurels. This is the only way I can keep my place in both club and national team,” Ambrose disclosed.

The former captain of the home-based Eagles, however, showered encomiums on the CHAN bronze medal-winning Eagles for sending signals to the world that Nigeria has one of the best local leagues in Africa, due to their fight back against Morocco in the quarter-finals before bowing on penalty shoot-outs to runners-up Ghana.

“If not for ill luck the team could have qualified for the final and you can see that the Eagles lost via penalty which is a game of luck too. All the same the players have proved to be quality legs in the country.

“A special kudos goes to the Chief Coach (Stephen Keshi) for leading the team to what I believe is a successful outing. The reason being that my colleagues were able to tell the whole world that they can hold their own in African football and the coach must be praised for instilling confidence in them. I was particularly thrilled with the way we fought back from 3-0 down in first half of the quarter-final match against Morocco to win the game 4-3. That was amazing, thrilling and showed clearly the die-hard spirit of a typical Nigerian player.

“I am happy that we have more players who can join us from the home front to fight for World Cup shirts in the team. The stiffer the competition for shirts the better for the team because there will be no complacency from any quarter. Everybody will have to work very hard and sweat to earn a place in the squad”, Ambrose told SportingLife from Scotland yesterday.

    Efe Ambrose still dreams EPL

Efe Ambrose says he wishes to play in the English Premier League after he was linked with a winter switch to Fulham.

“EPL is a well celebrated and followed league back home in Africa it has attracted a lot of big players and I won’t mind playing there at some point, but I am happy at Celtic, which is one of the best clubs in the world,” Nigeria defender Ambrose told MTNFootball.com

On the winter transfer talk that linked him to Fulham, Ambrose described it as a rumour but was glad his contributions at Celtic were being followed.

“There was no contact from Fulham or any EPL side this winter transfer that I know of, but when a player is been linked strongly to such league, it shows I am been watched and appreciated. I give God all the glory,” he said.

UEFA Champions League: Ambrose’s manager fears Barca revenge

Efe Ambrose was in action when Celtic emerged victorious over Barcelona in last year’s UEFA Champions League, but manager Neil Lennon is aware the Spanish giants will be out for revenge when both sides meet again on Tuesday.

The thought that Barca could achieve what eluded them last time, when they could not capitalise on a three-quarter share of possession, has absorbed much of the manager’s thoughts in the build-up to the second Group H match.

“Yes, that goes through my mind 100 per cent. That’s why Fraser Forster is so important. He made some big saves in the game last year, like the one he tipped over from Messi. He made some great saves in the Nou Camp as well”said Lennon on the Telegraph.

“If we go a goal down, can we stay in the game and force them into making a mistake?

What you don’t want is a spanking, and they will come aiming to rectify what went on last year so, yes, I’m very mindful of that as well.

“We’re playing them a little bit earlier this season, but last year they were unbeaten in all competitions. They’re unbeaten this season again.

On Saturday night Barcelona recorded a seventh straight win with a 2-0 victory over Almeria, but the result was overshadowed by an injury to goalscorer Lionel Messi, who held his thigh when he was substituted in the 29th minute.

Celtic too were 5-2 victors over Kilmarnock in a Scottish league game played on Saturday.

CARELESS DRIVING: Ambrose faces court in Scotland

Super Eagles and Celtic defender Efe Ambrose is to stand trial in Scotland next month for careless driving.

The 25-year-old has been charged with driving “without care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road”.

He is alleged to have driven at excessive speed, braked sharply and repeatedly overtaken other cars on the Clydeside Expressway on December 18 last year.

The Nigeria defender denied the charge and will stand trial at Glasgow’s Justice of the Peace court next month.

Ambrose is a key member of the Nigeria squad which faces Ethiopia in two weeks for a place at next year’s World Cup finals.

He joined Celtic in 2012 from Israeli club Ashdod, and recently signed an extension to his contract.

  • Efe Ambrose: Pressure is on Ajax

Efe Ambrose: Pressure is on Ajax

The magnitude of Celtic’s Champions League assignment away to Ajax on Wednesday night doesn’t need impressed upon Efe Ambrose.

“Going to Amsterdam is huge for us,” the Nigerian says. “It’ll be a deciding game for us – every one we play from now on is crucial, a cup final, to make the last 16. We know what we’re up against and we know we have to get everything right. It’s important to believe we can do it and we’re working hard to achieve our goals. We know we can’t write Ajax off though. They played good football against us at home, but they didn’t take their chances. We took ours. They’re a good side but the most important thing is for us to keep our heads straight and stay focused because we know if we lose it’s all over. We don’t want to let that happen.”

The situation Ambrose describes was even more pronounced when Celtic met Frank de Boer’s men on their home patch a fortnight ago. The 2-1 victory achieved at Celtic Park allowed Neil Lennon’s side to move on to three points, two above the Dutch club now propping up Group H. Were Celtic to secure that rarest beast – an away win in the Champions League, which would only be their second in 23 attempts – a place in the Europa League post-Christmas would be all but theirs with two games remaining. Moreover, assuming AC Milan lose away to Barcelona in midweek, in that scenario Celtic could qualify for the last 16 were they to overcome Milan when these two meet in the east end of Glasgow in the next round of matches.

If nothing else, Celtic go to Amsterdam having ensured a momentum shift with the first victory of this campaign. That point is not lost on Ambrose either. “Last time Ajax came without pressure because we had to win at home but the pressure is all back to them now,” says the centre-back. “We’re comfortable going there now, even though it won’t be easy. But they know they can’t lose the game if they have any chance to qualify. The better team will win the game… but I believe we’re the better team.”

The 24-year-old, indeed, dares to suggest Lennon’s side are potentially improved from the team that powered Celtic into the last 16 of the competition 11 months ago. “We’re still a good team,” Ambrose says. “We lost [Gary] Hooper, [Victor] Wanyama and [Kelvin] Wilson but the ones that came in are doing good work, they’re getting there. It’s not easy but I believe we’ll become stronger than we were last season.”

In Ambrose’s own area of the team there is little disagreement that a new arrival has allowed for renewal and revitalising. The Africa Cup of Nations winner has dovetailed impressively with summer signing Virgil van Dijk. So much so that the 22-year-old Dutchman is now being touted for international recognition in his homeland. Ambrose believes the circle of footballing life is allowing his central defensive partnership to blossom.

“His communication is good, he speaks English and we get on well,” Ambrose says. “And the manager has given us confidence to go and play. I want to help him the way Kelvin helped me. Kelvin talked to me all the time, he gave me confidence and courage and everything I needed to become a better player. Coming to a new league, you need someone to help you through. You need to adapt and when Virgil came in we spoke about how he needed to play.

“It’s about communication. Sometimes when I know he’s going [forward] I have to sit back for him. We’ve been covering for each other well. It’s my game as well, though. That’s why the manager has confidence in me. He knows I like doing that but to do that you need cover behind you in case there are any slip-ups.” Ambrose’s imperfections, highlighted when Celtic lost out in the last 16 to Juventus in March, appear to have been pared down through assuming the responsibilities of senior defensive partner. It is a vein in which the player must continue in the Amsterdam Arena.

Nigeria international Efe Ambrose has committed his future to Glasgow Celtic until the summer of 2017 after he signed a new four-year contract with the Scottish champions.

The versatile defender had earlier been linked with clubs in the English Premier League following his exploits at the African Cup of Nations.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Celtic so far and I am absolutely delighted to extend my stay at such a fantastic club,”Efe Ambrose told the official website.

The 24-year-old has made 55 appearances for Celtic since his arrival from Israelis Ashdod.
