  • Dockworker Lekan Shonde to die by hanging for killing wife

An Ikeja High Court has sentenced to death by hanging, Lekan Shonde, a dockworker, who killed his banker wife, Ronke, 36, at their residence in Egbeda, Lagos, three years ago.

Justice Josephine Oyefeso, while delivering the judgement, yesterday, found him guilty of the one-count charge brought against him by the Lagos State government.

Oyefeso held, that, the prosecution had proved his case beyond reasonable doubt, pointing out, that, the circumstantial evidence is clear, that, the deceased was the defendant’s wife and they have two children.

“I cannot but hold, that, the sudden provocation, the heat of passion, the retaliation, the violence used by the convict was in excess of a reasonable man,” the court held.

Justice Oyefeso, in sentencing Shonde, a father of two, to death, took judicial notice of the analyses of the pathologist, Dr. Shokunle Shoyemi, that, examination revealed old and fresh injuries on accused’s deceased wife.

She held, that, the bruises on the deceased’s cheek, blood collection in the brain, swollen brain and other multiple injuries, could not have been self-inflicted injuries.

“The defendant in the case was very economical with the truth, when he stated that he only slapped her, when he overheard his wife on a phone call, praising the sexual prowess of a lover.

“This does not march the degree of autopsy report. In the light of overwhelming evidence against the defendant, the court is satisfied, that, the prosecution has proved it’s case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The act was intentionally done. I find the defendant guilty,” declared Oyefeso.

Justice Oyefeso held, that, section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, prescribed, that, the person who commit murder shall be sentenced to death.

“In line with section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2015, this is the sentence of the court upon you, Olalekan Shonde, that, you are to hang by the neck, until you are dead. May the Lord have mercy on you,” she said.

Ronke’s lifeless body was discovered in the apartment she shared with Shonde, on May 6, 2016, and Shonde was charged for alleged murder.

He was arraigned on October 24, 2017 by the Lagos State government. The prosecution alleged that the accused committed the offence at 8:30p.m on May 5, 2016, at his residence in Tiemo Street, Egbeda, Lagos.

During trial, the prosecution called six witnesses and tendered various exhibits.

However, Shonde, in his defence, told the court, that, his deceased wife, Ronke, was sleeping on the couch in the sitting room with her phone while he departed for work on that day.

He had told the court, that, he heard his wife speaking to one Kayode on the phone a day to her death, telling him how much she enjoyed their love-making session.

Consequently, he slammed her on the wall.

In his allocution, Shonde, through his counsel, A. Mohammed pleaded for mercy.

“My Lord, there are two children of the marriage. I know, as a matter of fact, these two children have passed through the worst moment of their lives, and agonies that are immeasurable.

“I know, if these two children have any control in this proceeding, it would be that their father should not be prosecuted at all, but since this is not possible, I wish to plead with the court, that, their father be sentenced on a very liberal term.

“The defendant has no criminal record, he has developed series of failing health since his detention.

“This defendant hardly sees well again, he sees faintly. My Lord, he is hypertensive as he stands there and the authority of the prison can confirm.

However, the state prosecutor thanked the judge for ensuring that justice was done in the matter.

“I agree we are not aware of any past criminal record of the defendant. In view of the conviction for this charge, there is a punishment, We only ask the court to apply it.”

  • Communities urge Ambode to provide U-turn on Lagos/Abeokuta expressway

Four communities along Idi-Mango/Onipetesi to Dopemu under bridge on the Lagos/Abeokuta expressway have appealed to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to create a ”U”-turn on the road to ease difficulties and ensure safety of lives.

Chairman of Onipetesi Community Development Association, OCDA, Elder Kunle Amosun made the appeal at a press conference he addressed at the secretariat of OCDA at Onipetesi over the weekend.

He also called on the Federal Government especially the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola to intercede on “this matter of urgent public importance.”

The communities concerned are: residents of Onipetesi, Onilekere, Cement and Santos Layout with a population of about 980,000.

Amosun said though the communities have been agitating for the “U”-turn since 2001, they are however stepping up the agitation because of the on-going construction of BRT lanes in the axis, so that government could take advantage of the construction to creat at least two “U”-turns for the communities.

This he said would save residents coming from Oshodi the difficulty of having to go as far as to Egbeda, a distance of about 5km to turn back to their homes or for residents who want to go to Iyana Ipaja to go to Agege Motor road, a distance of about 2km to turn.

“It is important to know that the expressway was constructed many years ago without regard to the fact that there would be rapid development with the adjoining communities and they are disadvantaged because of location as it is bounded to the East by Murtala Mohammed International Airport, making the expressway the only route that leads to the community”.

The chairman wondered why their case should be different because “similar projects like the Lagos/Ikorodu road and the Agege Motor road have “U” turns almost at every Bus stop.

“Our frustrations are premised on the fact that if the construction continue without a “U” turn in our axis it will creat untold hardship for residents.

“A lot of man-hour will be wasted, lives have been lost as a result of traffic gridlock in the expressway as many patients who would have ordinarily be saved have died in such traffic gridlock and furthermore the traffic on completion of the BRT lanes will be heavier than experienced at present”,

“We strongly believe that one or two “U”-turn along this axis will save citizens the needless  hassle of facing agonising traffic to Dopemu and beyond, it will also alleviate the traffic gridlock for those going beyond our communities to destinations such as Egbeda, Idimu, LASU, Abule Egba, Ota etc.”, Amosun said.

Speaking on efforts the communities have made before now, Amosun said a lot has been done in the area of sensitization and correspondences with the relevant authorities.

“Two former Ministers of Works were contacted with promises to look into the issues but to no avail”; they have also written to the state government on the matter but the “commissioner of works gave flimsy excuse in one of his replies that a “U”-turn in the axis would further worsen already heavy traffic on the road; this is false, on the contrary it will ease traffic.

“We met the contractor working on the road but they said there was nothing they could do as they were working on a plan given by the Lagos state government, their client”, though they said “U”-turn can be created if they are so directed, Amosun said.

Present with him at the briefing were other prominent elders and exco members of OCDA like: Mr. Sam Emiowele, a chartered quantity surveyor, Chief Victor Oyolu, a chartered accountant, Ayo Omobowale, Engr. Jimi Taylor, vice president of OCDA etc.

  • Police arrest 57 for ‘homosexuality’

    …Suspects deny allegation

The Lagos State Police Command Monday paraded 57 young men arrested for alleged homosexuality.

They were arrested at the wee hours of Sunday at Kelly Ann Hotel/ Event Centre located at 3-7, Adenrele Street, Egbeda during an alleged initiation into a Gay Club.

But some of the suspects who spoke to reporters, denied being homosexuals, insisting they were at the hotel for different purposes including wedding, trading and leisure, among others.

Among those arrested were Prince Collins, 23; Emmanuel Odiza, 25; Ola Rotimi; Miracle Onyeka; Wole Ojo, 24; Daniel Sukari; Wealth Olasunkanmi, 25, and one James.

Parading the suspects, Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said the command received intelligence around 12:30am on Sunday that some young men will be initiated into Homosexuals’ Club between 1am and 2am at Kelly Ann Hotel/ Event Centre.

He said the action contravened Section 1(1) of the Same Sex Marriage Act, 2014, adding that it was based on the information that the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in charge of Shasha and Idimu stormed the location around 2am.

“On arrival, young men numbering about 80 were met in a hall taking different types of drinks including banned substances like Tramadol, Shisha laced with substances suspected to be Marijuana, etc.

“As soon as they sighted the police, they ran into different directions but the team arrested 57 of them. Investigation into the case is ongoing.”

Collins said he was a food vendor in front of the hotel, adding that he was arrested where he plied his trade.

“I sell food in front of the hotel. When police came they said I am under arrest and I followed them as a law abiding citizen. There were many women in and outside the hotel but they were not arrested. I am innocent,” said Collins.

Odiza said he was at the hotel to attend a birthday party, claiming he knew nothing about the gay club initiation.

Rotimi, a student, said he was also at the hotel for a birthday party, wondering why the police did not arrest women who were there.

Onyeka said he was arrested beside his car, which he used for cab services on the side.

“I work with AZ Apapa but I also use my car for taxi to get small money. I was arrested just by the side of my car near Barracks Bus Stop. I am married with children. I am innocent.

Ojo said he was drinking at the hotel’s bar when he was picked up.

Sukari said: “I stay in Rivers State but came to Lagos for a beauty pageant, Mr Tourism at Lekki. I left there around 6pm. I was heading to Egbeda to lodge in the hotel because I do not stay in Lagos. Because of the closure of Third Mainland Bridge, there was a heavy traffic, so I got to the hotel very late.

“I was about to lodge when the police team came in. I was asked to lie down which I obeyed because I felt I have done nothing wrong.”

James said he was at the hotel to perform a dance, adding that that was how he earned his living.

Olasunkanmi said he was at the hotel for a birthday party, adding that he was invited by a friend, Muyiwa.

“I went for a birthday party. There were many males and females there. Even Muyiwa that invited me was not arrested. It was a raid. I did nothing wrong. I was piping Shisha, which isn’t a crime. I did not add anything in the Shisha. There was no initiation going on. I think they found the Tramadol in someone’s pocket.”

The Oyo State government has warned all trespassers on its land holdings across the state, particularly in Ajoda, Egbeda local government area where its estates are located to desist from such practice noting that legal machinery are already in place to deal precisely against defaulters.

The state government through the state housing corporation also urged members of the public not to patronise land grabbers who are parading themselves as legal owners of parts of the Corporation’s land holding especially at Ajoda New Town, saying such patronage would amount to falling victim of land fraud.

The Corporations in a release signed by the Acting General Manager, Mr. Samuel Adekunle and Director, Public Relations and Information, Mr Kunle Sanni reiterated that the government through the agency is still in full control of the about five thousand hectares of land, located within the Egbeda LG of the state.

Faulting the claims of the alleged land grabbers, the Corporation recalled that a magistrate court sitting at Ejioku gave a judgement in its favour by refusing all the prayers of the applicant and subsequently dismissing the application brought against the Corporation.

Advising anybody interested in buying land at Ajoda New Town to approach the Corporation or conduct necessary verification and or search in order not to fall victim of fraud, Oyo State Housing corporation said it has renewed its commitment to surpass its revenue target for the year and generate income to the coffers of the state by inaugurating a task force for revenue generation.

According to the Corporations AGM, Mr Adekunle, the eight member committee will among other things “identify new sources of revenue, monitor distribution of bills to clients in respect of such payments, make a follow-up and ensuring that clients settle bills promptly, compile and collate suns paid on such sources of revenues on each estate of the Corporation and give weekly report to the management through the revenue supervisory committee members.”

While imploring members of the task force to see their appointment as a call to duty to turn around the fortune of the Oyo state Housing corporation, the AGM during the inauguration urged the entire staff to key into the policy of the state government aim of making government and parastatals self sustaining.

  • Senior citizens care centre takes off

Walking into the lounge of Stripes Home and Leisure Place for Geriatrics, Egbeda, a Lagos suburb, The Nation saw gaily dressed senior citizens – both males and females – engaged in various games – ludo, ayo, weaving and knitting while others were chatting.

The spacious airy lounge was well- decorated, with indigenous decors, with a touch of modern home decor like throw pillows, slipcovers, wall art and throw blankets.

Explaining the rationale behind the setting up the centre, Mrs Foluke Akinbi, a retired matron of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, said it was her passion for nursing as a care-giving profession inspired her.

Mrs Akinbi while conducting The Nation around the rooms gave another reason why she built the centre. She said: “A retiree like me still have more zeal and energy to dispense, and I wanted to go into something exciting, and beneficial to the society. So, when the inspiration came in 2016, I just accepted same, and pursued it, and today, I am happy because these old people pray for me, and their children and relatives that bring them are happy, fulfilled and satisfied that they are doing the right thing for their parents. Many older people are healthy and active, but their children are building careers and do not have the quality time again for these parents.”

Mrs Akinbi said the need to provide ad-hoc, short- or long-term day care for the elderly was another reason why she set up the centre.

She said, for instance, resistance to elderly care by a senior citizen could be triggered by some factors.

“Firstly, you have to remember that if your loved one is in need of elderly care, then they are at a stage of their lives when they have to cope with their own challenges – for example physical loss, mental loss, or loss of independence. This can be difficult for them to accept, and they could also be facing the challenge that they might think it is a sign of weakness to accept elderly care. They may feel angry at having to accept elderly care, guilty or confused as they might not understand they need help. Some feel guilty that they are ‘troubling’ their children with unnecessary spending.

“When providing elderly care, there are a number of considerations you have to bear in mind. As we get older we are increasing the likelihood of getting ill, and less tolerant leaving us susceptible to stress. This means that elderly care needs to plan for the possibility of illness from environmental toxins, infections, accidents, and stress.

“Stripe Care is committed to providing tailored care in accordance to best practice. We always ensure that all our clients stay in an environment that is comfortable, safe and clean with the greatest dignity, support and respect possible awarded to them by appropriately qualified and trained staff. We value the client’s physical, social, spiritual and psychological well-being and I always strive to become familiar with, retain, share and enjoy the individual personhood.

“I have a geriatric physician that comes in to check their Bp, and conduct the basic routine checks. We also ensure those with arthritis, or dental, eye challenges get specialists attend to them. We ensure we give them foods that are devoid of injurious recipes for their age. And the dietician in the house ensures locally sourced ingredients are used in food preparation. As many that have clinically advised diets, are also accorded the diets,” explained Mrs Akinbi.

Mrs Akinbi explained that she converted her home into the centre  when she realised that many workers found it hard to cater for their old parents. “Some are left with teenagers who had no knowledge of geriatric care. Some are left to watch home videos, others are depressed and even wished for death. But, with me here, the stories have changed for a lot of them. And in return, I am happy too.”

On services rendered at the centre, Mrs Akinbi said: “Leisure Club, short-term stay; long-term stay; Dementia and Alzheimer’s care are part of the services we rendered here. Older people have often lost touch with friends and families and find themselves isolated and lonely. Stripes Care can help people to build up their confidence again by providing a listening ear and encouraging the person to get out and about to rediscover old interests or find new friends.

“Short-term stay does not only provide an opportunity for the person staying with us to receive specialist support in a warm, safe and friendly environment, but can also enjoy a well-earned rest. Short term stay can be particularly useful when unexpected events occur, such as after a hospital stay, or bereavement of an aged-spouse.

“Stripes Care offers quality care for older people that promote independence alongside professional standards of healthcare, hygiene, nutrition and security. Each resident has an individual care plan. These detail the residents needs, likes and dislikes. Stripes Care has specialists in dementia care and recognise a person with dementia is, first and foremost, a person – unique and with a rich history of experiences, abilities, skills, knowledge, preferences, desires and personality. And all these are at an affordable charge.

“We do not stop at that, as we have a 24-hour Helpline, with friendly customer service staff for all questions. We are open for discussions.’’

  • Trial of alleged ‘fake’ Elegbeda-elect begins April 10

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos has fixed April 10 for the trial of Alhaji Kehinde Ogunsola, who allegedly falsely claimed to be the Elegbeda-elect of Egbeda.

The court fixed the date following the absence of prosecuting Inspector Stephen Molo.

On March 4, the police arraigned Ogunsola before Mr Martin Owumi on a five-count charge of conspiracy, forgery, breach of peace, impersonation and uttering.

But Monday, another Magistrate, Mrs. A. A. Famobiwo, took over the case following Owumi’s transfer.

Ogunsola, 45, was accused of forging the letterhead of the lsiba-Oluwa Ruling House, Egbeda and impersonating as the Elegbeda-elect.

According to the prosecutor, Ogunsola and his accomplices, who are at large, committed the offences last June 19, at No. 131, Idimu Road, Egbeda.

Molo alleged that Ogunsola wrote a letter on the forged letterhead of lsiba-Oluwa Ruling House to the Commissioner of Local Government, Lagos.

Ogunsola and his accomplices allegedly conducted themselves “in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by publicly claiming and assuming to be the Elegbeda-elect,” which they knew could cause “violent reaction from the members of the public.”

The charge, marked J/05/2018, reads in part:

“That you Alhaji Kehinde Ogunsola and others still at large, on the 19th day of June, 2017 at No. 131, ldimu Road, Egbeda did conspire to commit a felony to wit: forgery, using false documents, and making document without authority.

“That you Alhaji Kehinde Ogunsola and others still at large, did knowingly forge a letterhead of lsiba-Oluwa Ruling House, Egbeda with intent that it may be used or acted upon as genuine to the prejudice of the lsiba-Oluwa Ruling House, Egbeda, Ministry of Local Government, Lagos State and members of the public.

“That you Alhaji Kehinde Ogunsola ’m’ and others still at large, on the same date, and place in foresaid magisterial district did represent yourselves and assumed to be the Elegbeda-elect of Egbeda”

Molo said the offences contravened sections 168(1)(c), 365(1), 366(1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 as amended and Section 36 of the Oba and Chiefs of Lagos State Law, 1981.

    Ogunsola pleaded not guilty.

Police arrest cripple for ‘illegal’ firearms possession

The police in Lagos have arrested a physically challenged man, Godwin Fawehinmi, for alleged illegal possession of fire arms and dangerous weapons.

Fawehinmi was arrested at Alhaji Sadiku Street in Akowonjo, Egbeda, by detectives led by the Area M Commander, Austin Akika, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) last week.

It was gathered that his arrest followed a tip off to the police that the suspect usually threatened people with gun.

Fawehinmi, who was said to have spent the better part of his life abroad, it was learnt, usually fired warning shots in the air.

According to a police source, three guns including a pump action rifle and a locally made pistol were recovered from his residence.

He said: “He was arrested last Sunday. The suspect lived in Europe and that was where he had an accident and became crippled. He returned to Nigeria and since then, he has been acting as area father to boys in his neighbourhood.

“We got information that he usually opened fire and that people in the area were scared of him. We acted on the information and the Area Commander led some officers to his place to investigate.

“We found a gun on his body. His house was searched and more guns, two cutlasses and axe were recovered. He does not have licences for them.

“When he was asked what he was doing with the weapons, he said he used them to protect himself. He was transferred to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) at the command’s headquarters.”
