    Egbin Power CEO calls for sustainable development in electricity sector

    Chief Executive Officer, Egbin Power Plc, Mokhtar Bounour, has reaffirmed the company’s unwavering commitment to driving sustainable development in Nigeria’s power sector during the Shell Power Conference 2025.

    The conference, held in Ikeja, Lagos, under the theme “Powering Nigeria’s Energy Future: Bridging the Gap Between Ambition and Action,” brought together key stakeholders, industry leaders, and policy experts to deliberate on actionable pathways for powering Nigeria’s energy future.

    Speaking at the gathering, Bounour described the conversations as bold, honest, and forward-thinking, highlighting the need for a united front to tackle the challenges within the electricity sector.

    He said: “While compliance with health and safety standards comes first in generating electricity safely, our actions and commitment to providing adequate and reliable electricity to power industries, hospitals, strategic institutions, schools, and homes will enhance socio-economic development in Nigeria.

    “Our collective actions and collaborations among players across generations, transmission, and distribution will catalyse improvement of the current situation we have now.  We have explored how collaboration can unlock transformative investments, improve liquidity, and accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies that will drive operational excellence,” Bounour noted.

    He emphasised that the path forward must focus on efficiency, strategic partnerships, and the adoption of innovative solutions to enhance power generation and distribution in the country.

    “The challenges ahead are real, but so is our shared determination,” Bounour noted. He explained that he is inspired by the commitment to driving meaningful change in our industry.

    Speaking further, Bounour pointed out the importance of stakeholder collaboration and regulatory support in transforming the sector. He reiterated Egbin’s readiness to partner across value chains to drive results, noting that the company continuously invests in innovation and operational upgrades to meet Nigeria’s growing energy demand.

    “We are further driven by our commitment to real progress and turning our vision into results by building a truly sustainable energy ecosystem,” Bounour shared.

    According to him, “the road to a brighter energy future requires our collaboration, and I believe that together, we can close the gap between where we are and where we need to be. The future of Nigeria’s energy sector is not a dream. It is a mission, let’s power it together,” Bounour affirmed.

    The Shell Power Conference also featured interactive presentations, insightful industry analysis, networking opportunities, as well as impactful discussions focused on driving positive development in the sector. The event concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to align their ambitions with concrete steps, ensuring a resilient and inclusive energy future for Nigeria.

    Egbin Power counts gains of community football tourney

    Egbin Power Plc has hosted the  2024 edition of its annual community football competition to deepen the crucial role  of football  in fostering unity and promoting youth development, thereby contributing to national progress.

    According to the GenCo, the yearly competition, now in its third season, has become a robust platform for discovering talents and promoting the spirit of camaraderie among youth in the communities.

    The 2024 edition witnessed an impressive turnout of supporters and a display of football skills by players of the 16 participating teams drawn from its host communities – Egbin, Ijede, and Ipakan in Ikorodu, Lagos.

    Speaking on the competition, Head of Corporate Communication & Branding, Egbin Power, Felix Ofulue said: “As a responsible organization, we are proud to provide a platform that fosters unity, promotes sports development, and showcases the talents of our youth. This competition is a testament to our commitment to investing in the future of our host communities.

    “The football competition is eagerly anticipated by the youth every year, as it fosters sportsmanship among communities and provides a reputable platform for them to showcase their talents. We are thrilled by the resounding success we are witnessing annually. And we shall continue to make it better for the growth and development of our host communities,” Ofulue noted.

    Former Nigeria international and Atlanta ’96 Olympic soccer gold medallist, Abiodun Obafemi who was the special guest at the finals, applauded Egbin Power Plc for creating a strong platform for the development of sport and fostering unity among youths in the host communities.

    He said: “This is a high-level football exhibition sponsored by Egbin Power. Two years ago, I was here, and it shows that the competition is growing bigger every year. What I saw here today gladdens my heart, seeing the progressive development. I saw some players that have a bright future in football.

    “Kudos to the company for the wonderful work they are doing for these communities.”

    This is another way of engaging the youth. It’s a platform that will prepare a majority of them for a football career. My advice to the players is for them to embrace this gesture, to be serious about it and build on it. Congratulations to the winners and Egbin Power for putting up a top-class competition,” Obafemi added.

    Egbin Power’s Head of Maintenance, Felix Ebiware, and the Head, of Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE), Julius Akpong, including community leaders such as the Olisa of Ijede, High Chief Musediq Aliu and Baale of Ipakan, High Chief Mustapha Lasisi were among those in attendance at the occasion.

    High Chief Musediq Aliu, the Olisa of Ijede, commended Egbin Power for contributing to youth and sports development in the host communities. He said: “Egbin Power has consistently demonstrated its interest in promoting unity, growth, and development of our communities. We are grateful for the success of this competition, and we urge the company to keep investing and promoting youth and sports development.”

    At the finals held at Ipakan Community Stadium, Ikorodu, the defending Champions Alagura Football Club (FC) retained the title after defeating Oke-Eletu FC 5-3 in a penalty shootout. The match had ended in a 1-1 draw. In the third-place encounter, Ajeri FC won against Igbe FC by 2 – 1 to clinch the 2nd position.

    Alagura FC went home with a cash prize of N1,000,000, while the 2nd  and 3rd  positions received N700,000 and N500,000 respectively. The Best Goalkeeper award went to Yusuf of Sterling Ipakan FC, while Usman Multala won the Highest Goal Scorer Award.

    The 2024 edition featured a total of 16 football clubs, namely: Alagura, Sterling Ipakan, Dragon Ipakan, Ebute Olowo, Abule-Eko II, Alaanu-Omo, Igbe-Ogunro, Egbin Classical, Egbin Diamond, Abule-Eko, Estate Boys, Alajede, Oko-Ope, Ajeri, Igbopa, Oke-Eletu.
