The Internally Generated Revenue of the 18 local government areas of Edo State has hit N210m monthly.

Before the coming of Governor Godwin Obaseki, the 18 local government area could barely raise N30m monthly.

State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon Jimoh Ijegbai, who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen said the introduction of e-ticketing helped to boost revenue of the local councils.

Ijegbai said plans were on to block leakages in the council’s revenue through the introduction of scratch cards.

He said the scratch cards were already being test run in Ikpoba-Okha, Egor and Oredo local government areas.

According to him, “If you look across the 18 local government areas. You will see massive infrastructural development. For the first time, Esan South East now have a transport line. They never had it before and their salaries are now regular.

“In December, Mr. Governor approved 50 percent of their savings for grading of rural roads. We have completed work on 20 primary health centres we used as pilot scheme. • Xmas: Price of children wears soars in Benin

Ahead of the Yuletide season, prices of children wears is sky rocketing in Benin, Edo. The report said that apart from the increase in prices of children clothes, many women now buy fairly used clothes also known as `gbogbo’ or second hand clothes at bend down boutiques.

A visit to some children shops at Ekiosa, Oba, Uselu and Egor markets on Thursday showed that majority of people now buy more of the gbogbo clothes that were not expensive.

Mrs Alice Ehigiator, who sells children clothes, attributed the high cost to the upcoming Christmas celebration.

Madam Cecilia Urewu, another trader in child wears, said majority of cloth sellers no longer buy new clothes because of the high cost.
According to her, the prevailing market situation and the Yuletide season are also factors that contributed to the increase.

“This year, I could not buy clothes for my children so I decided to buy `gbogbo’ which will last for long and more durable.
“At the moment, everything is expensive, not only clothes,’’ she said.

A customer, Ms Tina Lacoja, attributed the non-availability of customers in the market to the fact that clothes were too expensive.
According to Tina, majority of customers no longer buy new clothes, because when they think of the cost they tend to go for a first grade gbogbo.
She noted that the price of children wears would increase more in December due to the Christmas celebration.

  • Egor workers nabbed for issuing fake revenue receipts

Two revenue enforcement workers of the Egor Local Government Area of Edo State have been arrested for issuing fake receipt to unsuspected commercial drivers.

The sum of N280,000 believed to have been realised from the sale of ticket was recovered from the suspects identified as Monday Esewi and Iyoha Osagie.

Governor Godwin Obaseki had last year introduced e-ticketing as a means of collecting revenue by government officials.

Luck ran out of the two suspects when the council boss, Ms. Eghe Ogbemudia, accosted a commercial driver and demanded to know whether he has paid the approved daily payment of N800.

Ogbemudia was shocked to see the ticket provided by the driver was different from the official receipt.

The council boss led other official to Uselu Market where the driver said he obtained the ticket from and discovered several booklets of fake receipt in the possession of the suspects.

She further discovered that the usually began the sale of fake tickets at 6am before resuming at the council secretariat at 8am to collect the genuine receipts.

In a chat with newsmen, Ogbemudia said it was shocking for her to know that the people she empowered with jobs would be the ones to destroy the system.

According to her, “We discovered cash and fake receipts booklets from the two revenue enforcers. It was a driver that told me he bout the tickets at Uselu Market.”

The suspects however denied selling fake tickets to commercial motorists.

According to Monday,”Those receipts are not fake. They were given to us by staff of the local council.

Iyoha said, “I was shocked when they said the receipts are fake. All the tickets I sell everyday are collected from the council secretariat.”
