Have more faith in Nigerian League

Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Bitrus Bewarang has pleaded with former Sunshine Stars coach Austin Eguaveon and others who unceremoniously resigned from their coaching job because of the actions of the referees to be a little patient with the system.

The former Super Eagles coach was said to have angrily left his job with Nigeria Premier League sude, Sunshine  Stars of Akure because he could no longer cope with excesses of the  referees.

Reacting to the action of Equaveon, Bewarang begged the Edo born coach and the other coaches who felt disenchanted with the performances of the referees to be a little patient with the system.

“I understand how they feel about seeing their efforts been frustrated by bias officiating. But the issue is this, if all the coaches leave the league because of that who will now coach the boys.

“They just have to be patient because there is no perfect system anywhere in the world. The fact is that we all have to stay put and help the system even though they feel dissatisfied,” he said.

The head of the NFF technical department assured that they are working hand in hand with the Referees Committee to ensure that the best referees are retained in the league while the bad eggs among them are done away with.

Eguavoen: Why I left Sunshine Stars

FORMER Super Eagles head coach, Austin Eguavoen, has spoken for the first time about his reasons for quitting Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, Sunshine Stars.

Eguavoen joined the Akure club on 25 April as head of their technical crew, but spent just 46 days in charge.

The 51-year-old has now lifted the lid on the reasons behind his shock decision to leave the club after spending less than two months in charge.

“I had been out of the system for a while but a few persons who recognise my job still kept tabs on me,” Eguavoen began in an exclusive chat with supersport.com.

“I decided to give back to the country when I accepted the offer to take the NPFL Under-17 All Stars to South Africa (as head coach of the side that participated in the Gauteng Future Champions Tourney in March).

“After I returned to Nigeria with the team, I received a lot of congratulatory messages for my work in South Africa and one of those messages came from Gbenga Elegbeleye, who asked me if I’d be interested in taking charge of Sunshine Stars.

“I initially told him I was not interested but he’s a man I respect, as he has managed sports with distinction at the highest level, so I eventually agreed to take up the offer,” he said.

  • Moses will deliver — Eguavoen

    Moses will deliver — Eguavoen

Fomer Super Eagles’ Chief Coach Augustine Eguavoen has allayed fears on the likely position on form Chelsea’s right  wing back star Victor Moses would play for the Eagles in 2019 Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifier against South Africa come June 10 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Eguavoen who was recently appointed Technical Adviser of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure claimed that “Moses is a versatile player who cannot only adapt but excel in any position he plays for his team in a match”.

“I am aware of a strong debate as regards what position Victor Moses will play when he comes back to play for Nigeria against South Africa. Firstly I want to emphasise here that every coach has his own philosophy and Chelsea Manager Anthony Conte does not play the same formation with Gernot Rohr of the Super Eagles.

“Conte plays three players at the back, four across the midfield, while the wing back like Moses turns to right wing attacker when attacking and the others fall back to defend when their opponents switch on the attack.

“But Gernot Rohr has adopted the 4-4-2 and 4-5-1 formation since he was appointed the Eagles Technical Adviser. Right now it is very difficult for Rohr to change his system that have fetched him victories in the important matches he has led the Eagles.

“But thank God Moses is a versatile player and he can conveniently switch positions. So the player will cope with any position the Eagles Coach will deply him to. The boy is highly gifted and a blessing to Nigeria”, the former Eagles Coach popularly called Cerezo told SportingLife yesterday.

Eguavoen must ensure Sunshine stays in NPFL

    •Negotiations not concluded yet

The major task of the yet to be contracted new Technical Adviser of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, Austin Eguavoen is to ensure that the club is not relegated and maintain their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) status at the end of the season that would be on break this week.

SportingLife gathered exclusively from Ondo State government top sources in Akure that the former Super Eagles coach met with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State last week and contractual talks are still in progress but it was evidently clear that Eguavoen would take over the team at the start of the second stanza of the ongoing NPFL before the end of this month.

“Austin Eguavoen met with the state governor last week and the governor has approved his taking over of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure. You know that Sunshine Stars is a big club and Eguavoen too is a big coach. So there is need for time to iron out the deal very well so that we can achieve the desired results we crave for.

“He (Eguavoen) needs to travel (to America) to meet with his family and discuss with them about the new job before he can settle down. We are looking at a period like the beginning of the second half of the league for him to take over the team when all the contractual agreements have been sorted out anyway.

“The governor has told him that the club must not be relegated this season. So his first assignment is to ensure that Sunshine Stars stays in Nigeria Professional Football League after then other things can follow like fighting for a continental ticket. But his primary assignment is for the club to stay in the elite division of the Nigerian league”, a top official from the state government disclosed yesterday.

  • Eguavoen to NFF: Put your house in order

Eguavoen to NFF: Put your house in order

•Begs for payment of his, other coaches outstanding salaries

Former Super Eagles  captain and coach of same team, Austin Eguavoen has beckoned on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to put their house in order and strive to correct the flaws that make successive coaches of the national teams to complain for the growth of football in the country.

Eguavoen, who was reacting to the resignation of ex- Eagles boss, Sunday Oliseh regretted the inability of the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder to steer the team till the end of the 2017 AFCON qualifiers but warned that the NFF must correct what makes coaches to complain during preparation for major competitions.

Despite the managerial change in the Eagles, Eguavoen exuded confidence that Nigeria will beat Egypt in Kaduna because the senior national team has been known to rise up to the occasion during big matches.

Eguavoen told SportingLife in a brief chat: “It is a pity that Oliseh had to resign. He has his reasons because every mature person has a choice. But for me I thought he would have stayed back to see the AFCON qualifiers through and if we qualify or otherwise so be it. He has done his bit and he can move on. He has his own reasons maybe it was money problem only God knows. I am not saying Oliseh was at fault  and neither have I said the NFF too.

“For the Egypt game in Nigeria, it is a game we can win convincingly but the approach to that game must be very businesslike. For instance Ikeme has been doing very well as a good goalkeeper but back up I am not comfortable. If Enyeama were still around it would have been fine. I am not trying to draw a team list. We have a team that can beat Egypt if the approach is right.

“I will point a little finger at the NFF. The coaches are always complaining about things not properly taken care of, especially money-wise. If we have financial problem the NFF president should speak out because you want to keep your position does not mean that some principle actors have to suffer.”

On the appointment of Siasia Eguavoen told SportingLife: “Congratulations to Siasia and we will support him and also wish him well. But remember that when he spoke out that his team was suffering when they went to Senegal what did he get? He got a query and also a serious warning and was even at the verge of losing his job because he spoke out. God was with us in Senegal because the boys fought for their lives and we were the African champions and we came back everyone is happy.  The same Siasia has been drafted into the Super Eagles. If he cries out tomorrow again of neglect by the NFF, what also happens? Two individuals are not the same. Oliseh has his own style and I have my own style too and as well as other past national team coaches with their own style and their way of operating in life.

If something goes wrong and Siasia stays back doesn’t mean I am weak and he is stronger, it is the way we approach things. The NFF should sit up and do their own thing so that they can confidently say that they have put everything in place and that it is up to the coaches and players to go do their job. NFF should not let any complain come from anywhere and I so much believe that Nigeria will beat Egypt (here at home)and people will be very shocked but right there in Cairo that I don’t know. I am certain that Nigeria always rise up to big games.”

Nonetheless, Eguavoen has beckoned on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to pay him and other coaches owed salaries for handling the national teams many years ago after their entreaties and appeals have not been honoured.

“I want to beg the NFF to pay us our salaries. It has been too long and it is the reason why I said I don’t want to speak about the NFF because anytime I do, I get upset. They always complain of lack of money but they are paying everybody. I have spoken to past presidents and present president of the NFF and nobody has come out to say anything. To serve Nigeria is it a crime? When somebody works please pay them. I am not the only one, Alloy Agu, Ben Iroha and I are also appealing on behalf of other coaches that are owed by them that they should pay them up,” he said.

    Gombe United to retain Eguavoen

Gombe United will keep faith with former Super Eagles’ coach, Austin Eguavoen and his other technical crew members for the next season, despite the Desert Scorpions‘ demotion to the lower league at the end of last season.

The Gombe side struggled to remain in the elite division and even thrashed Abia Warriors 4-1 in the concluding fixture of the season but the maximum points couldn’t secure their place in the premier league for another season after Bayelsa United and FC Taraba picked up unlikely wins at Owerri and Port Harcourt against Heartland and Sharks.

The club’s Camp Commandant, Garuba Tanko in a chat with SportingLife said the good works of Eguavoen and his other lieutenants during the second stanza proved that they would be able to take the club back to the elite division after a season in the lower league.

Tanko enthused that Eguavoen has been charged with ensuring that the Desert Scorpions gain instant return to the top flight at the end of next season.

To this end, Tanko revealed to SportingLifethat all the players that featured for the club were retained while a few are being watched to add more fireworks to the team next season.

“We are not changing Austin Eguavoen at all because he is our coach for the next league season. He tried his best with the assistant coaches that we have and they have been charged with ensuring that Gombe United returns to the premier league at the end of the season.

“We have also retained all the players that we used last season so as to fast track our return to the elite league. We were very close to remaining in the premier league before we narrowly missed out,” Tanko told SportingLife.

Eguavoen: Keshi needs to improve technically

Austin Eguavoen, Former Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria has waded into the ongoing debate if the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should retain the services of Stephen Keshi as head coach of the senior national team.

The 48-year-old was speaking to a Lagos State based radio station, Brilafm, when he reckoned that the Big Boss has done well since he took charge of the Super Eagles – winning the African Nations Cup and making the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil after failing to achieve such feat since 1998.

The current technical adviser of Gombe United says that if Keshi is eventually retained as the gaffer of the national team manager- he must develop himself by associating with top FA’s like the Dutch and Brazilian Federations.

“I am not saying because Stephen Keshi is my friend then he deserves to stay- look at records, he has done well. He can only improve.

“Jose Mourinho and other big coaches in the world do not sleep, so my only advice to Keshi, will be to try and associate with these top coaches.

“He should go to football federations like the Dutch FA, Brazilian FA and ask questions because nobody knows it all. He still has a lot to improve on and he can take it up from there,” he submitted.

Stephen Keshi is currently negotiating a new deal with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after his contract expired after the World Cup.
