QUEST for greener pastures: Egwuekwe set to dump CHAN squad

AFCON 2013 and Super Eagles star, Azubuike Egwuekwe has sensationally told brilafm.net that he may not be a part of the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) team given the offers he has abroad with the winter transfer window set to open with less than a week to go.

Egwuekwe, who is currently training with the Super Eagles for the forthcoming Championship for African nations in January, says that he hopes to move abroad in the winter transfer.

“I have a lot of offers from Europe but I am just keeping it hidden, maybe January by the special grace of God.”

The 24-year-old Warri Wolves defender who started his professional career with Nasarawa United in 2006 further revealed that his imminent move may still come after the CHAN tournament in South Africa.

“You never can tell, anything can still happen, it may be before or after the CHAN in South Africa,” he said.

    Egwuekwe doubtful against Burkina Faso

NIGERIA defender Azubuike Egwuekwe is a major doubt for tomorrow’s opening Group C match against Burkina Faso due to illness.

The towering Warri Wolves stopper missed the team’s accreditation for the AFCON on Friday.

However, Eagles spokesman Ben Alaiya assured Egwuekwe will be fit for Monday’s match.

“He’s just under the weather and should be fine for the first game.

Previously an ever-present under coach Stephen Keshi, Egwuekwe has lost his first-team place to Godfrey Oboabona, who is now expected to partner skipper Joseph Yobo in the heart of the back four.

Meanwhile, skipper Yobo has vouched for the discipline in the Eagles team.

Players of Super Eagles in recent past have been accused of not showing enough commitment during national team action.

However, Yobo has insisted that indiscipline is a thing of the past with this team.

“I think the discipline level is very high. We have a coach who is an ex-captain of the team and knows what it means to keep a discipline side. We are getting better and the issue of indiscipline in the Eagles does not exist in this team,” he said.

The coach Keshi-led side had a closed-door training session and the team are billed to meet with the media today at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
