AAG: Egypt, Nigeria win table tennis team titles

Just like in 2011, Egypt over the weekend retained the title in the women’s team event of table tennis at the 2015 African Games in Congo Brazzaville.

It was with much efforts and tactical discipline that Egypt defeated Nigeria to hold on to the gold medal in the female event.

Two wins from Dina Meshref and a win from Nadeen El-Dawlatly salvaged the victory for Egypt in an epic final that ended 3-2 in favour of the North African.

Also, veteran Segun Toriola turned back the clock when he recorded an emphatic victory over Mohamed El-Beiali and Omar Assar to help Nigeria reclaim the men’s team throne ahead of the North African. Since the tournament began, Toriola remained unbeaten with this needed victory for Nigeria.

“This is not the first time I will be playing the deciding match but my coach told me to concentrate. But I must say it was more difficult for me in the match. I remained focused and I am happy that I won the match for my country. I feel good winning the title again and I am now strong mentally,” said elated EL-DAWLATLY Nadeen.

[ad id=”403656″]Meshref Dina added: “I am very proud that we won the title this year because looking at the roll of honours, Nigeria has won the African Games title more than any country in Africa. So I am very happy that we were able to retain the title we won four years ago in Mozambique. This goes to show the Egypt is improving and our generation has really worked hard for this success.”

On the victory over Egypt, Toriola said: “I think the competition just started with this victory because we still have five medals to fight four. But prior to the match, I told my teammates that we should have confidence even when we were down 2-1 in major. I knew that if I had to beat Omar Assar, I need to be confidence and not to play with any caution. If I am too conscious I will make mistakes against Omar. I think it was the confidence in the team that gave us the victory.”

For the 2014 ITTF Star Player, Aruna Quadri, it was a sweet victory. “In our last meetings he defeated me but I could remember that I had also beaten him twice. But today I found answer to him because we play same style and he believes my style suits him. I am so grateful to God that I was able to find answer to Mohammed El-Beiali tonight. This is a big victory for after our women team narrowly lost to Egypt earlier,” Quadri said.

  • AAG: Nigeria to battle Egypt for T/Tennis gold

The rivalry between Nigeria and Egypt will resurface again in Brazzaville as the two best table tennis playing nations clash in the final of the team events at the ongoing 11th African Games in Congo Brazzaville.
In the men’s event, Nigeria’s team was on Saturday merciless against Ghana as they rattled their West African neighbor 3-0 in the semifinal to set up a battle against Egypt in the final.
In the women’s event, Nigerian ladies dazed host team Congo Brazzaville 3-0 to secure their place in the final. They will now face Egypt who had earlier defeated Algeria in the second semifinal.
Acknowledging the superiority of Nigeria, Ghana’s Bernard Sam said: “It was not an easy match against Nigeria because they are very experienced and it really showed in the match. We had thought we could do what we did to Congo Brazzaville against them but before we reaised it was 2-0. We then knew that they are superior to us. We hope Nigeria win the gold being our brother from the West.”
Also, Sam’s compatriot, Derek Abreka said: “For me playing against Aruna was a good experience for me because his balls are very powerful and I can now say that Aruna is a great player. This is the second time I would be playing against him as the first was in Congo DRC in 2008 where he defeated me 3-1. His forehand is very powerful and his shots are superb. I look forward to him winning the singles.
However, Nigeria’s Seun Ajetunmobi believes Nigeria would be unstoppable in the final. “I feel good since the commencement of the tournament although we are yet to play any tough match. We really prepared very well for this competition and we hope that we can crown it up with victory against any team in the final. We are aware that the final will be tough and we are battle ready for it. I believe Nigeria will surprise everybody in this competition,” Ajetunmobi admits.

  • Egypt business expands

Business activity in Egypt’s private sector excluding oil grew in August at the fastest pace of the year on the back of solid growth in output, though employment fell for the eighth time in nine months, a survey showed.

The Emirates NBD Egypt Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 51.2 in August, up from 49.2 the previous month. A reading above 50 indicates expansion and below 50, contraction.

“The improvement in the August survey is encouraging, and more than reverses the decline seen in the previous month,” Jean-Paul Pigat, economist at Emirates NBD, said.

“The rise in the output component to an 11-month high was, particularly, notable, and hopefully suggests that the slowdown witnessed in July will not persist through H2.”

The August survey was the highest reading in eight months and the second time this year that business conditions recorded by the survey have improved, albeit modestly.

Much of the improvement was spurred by an increase in output and new orders, with 23 percent of participants recording higher output than the month before and many reporting stronger demand conditions.

“With export activity softening, domestic demand is likely to be the main driver of growth in the near term,” said Pigat.

Egyptian non-oil exports during the first seven months of the year fell by 19 percent compared to the same period last year, the state’s General Organisation for Export and Import Control said in July. New work from abroad decreased in August for the third time in four months. Some participants tied lower exports to a lack of stability across key international markets in the Middle East.

Despite increased output the PMI survey also showed that hiring dropped for the eighth time in nine months.

Though Egypt’s unemployment rate edged down to 12.7 percent in the second quarter of 2015, the jobless rate among youth holding a university degree was 44.6 percent.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has pledged to reduce joblessness to 10 percent over the next five years while reviving the economy through long-awaited reforms, state-led mega-projects, and the return of foreign investors and tourists.

Companies attributed another sharp rise in purchase prices in August to the ongoing weakness of the Egyptian pound versus the dollar.

  • 2015 All Africa Games: Egypt, Algeria camp in China for Nigeria

2015 All Africa Games: Egypt, Algeria camp in China for Nigeria

In readiness for Nigeria at the 2015 All Africa Games, Egypt and Algeria are at present in China honing their skills in table tennis for the multi-sports championship in Congo Brazzaville.

After dominating the just concluded ITTF Africa Senior Cup in Cameroon, Egypt returned to Asia this week to continue with their build-up under the tutelage of their Chinese coach.

Also, 15 Algerian players were sighted at a training camp in Shanghai under the watchful of their French technical adviser, Cedric Rouleau.

For the Egyptians, this year’s games hope to be excited as Omar Assar, El-Sayed Lashin and Mohammed El-Beiali as well as Dina Meshref and Nadeen El-Dawlatly are in the best form of their lives considering their performance at the Cameroon tournament.

Before the Cameroon competition, the Egyptian team has embarked on a one month training tour in China and they have also decided to return to perfect their skills for the games.

Unlike their Egyptian counterparts, Algeria were camped in Algiers for the Cameroon championship and having seen their level during the ITTF Africa Senior Cup, the team moved to China to continue their training as well.

Host – Congo Brazzaville will also be rounding up their one-year training tour of China this month having perfected formalities for the engagement of their Chinese players who are also expected to feature for the Central African region during the championship.

Vice President, Africa Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), Olabanji Oladapo told NationSport Tuesday that Nigeria must brace up if its hopes to clinch any medal in Brazzaville.

“I don’t think we should be relaxed this year because with what I saw at the Cameroon championship, it is clear that everybody is after Nigeria. They all know that we are capable of springing surprises and I am sure they know that they have to be at their best to overcome Nigeria. I know we have the quality in terms of talents, but we just need to harness these talents to achieve the optimum results in Brazzaville. I believe that with a technically sound coach, we can do better in Brazzaville and this I believe is the only way we can perform beyond every expectation,” Oladapo said.

  • Egyptian court confirms Morsi’s death sentence

Egyptian court confirms Morsi’s death sentence

The Cairo Criminal Court on Tuesday confirmed the death sentence for deposed president Mohammed Morsi for orchestrating a prison escape during the 2011 uprising that toppled long-time ruler Hosni Mubarak.

Prosecutors charged that Morsi and other leaders in the Muslim Brotherhood conspired with foreign Islamist organisations to storm prisons during the 2011 uprising.

Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie, former parliament speaker, Saad al-Katatni and three other co-defendants also received the death penalty in the case.

In a related case, three Muslim Brotherhood leaders were sentenced to hang for conspiring with foreign powers.

Morsi and 16 others received life sentences in that case.

Morsi appeared calm but impassive as a local television showed him from time to time inside a soundproof defendant’s cage while presiding judge Shaaban al-Shami read out the lengthy judgment.

The Brotherhood has dismissed the case as a political farce. Amnesty International described the trial as “grossly unfair.”

The charges were brought after the military, then headed by Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi, who has since been elected president, deposed Morsi in July 2013.

Morsi and other Brotherhood leaders were among thousands of prisoners who were freed in disputed circumstances during the chaos of the 2011 uprising.

Prosecutors said that heavily armed Hamas militants infiltrated Egypt from the Gaza Strip and stormed three prisons where its members as well as the Brotherhood leaders were held.

The Brotherhood leaders had been arrested shortly after protests against Mubarak broke out.

The death sentences are subject to an automatic appeal. Other sentences can also be appealed by both defence and prosecution.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which came first in parliamentary as well as presidential elections after the fall of Mubarak, has been subjected to a fierce crackdown since Morsi’s ouster.

Hundreds of mainly Islamist demonstrators have been killed in clashes with security forces or in the break-up of protests.

Activists say more than 40,000 people, mainly Islamists, have been detained or prosecuted.

According to the official National Council for Human Rights, 700 members of the security forces have also been killed. Most of them fell victim to jihadist groups.

The Egyptian authorities have designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation after blaming it for a spate of deadly attacks.

The Islamist group has repeatedly denied the charge, accusing the government of oppression.

Egypt court quashes Mubarak acquittal, orders retrial

The Egyptian Court of Appeal has annulled the acquittal of former President Hosni Mubarak and set his retrial for Nov. 15.

Mubarak will face charges over the killing of protesters during the revolution of January 2011, as well as corruption and embezzlement of state funds.

The court upheld the appeal of the prosecutor and quashed all the acquittal verdicts of the Assize Court for the former president, his sons Alaa and Gamal and his party colleagues.

Others people to stand trial alongside the 87 year-old former leader are fugitive businessman, Hussein Salem, former Interior Minister, Habib el Adli, and six of his assistants.

The new trials will open before the same Court of Appeal and the verdicts will be final, absolute and irrevocable, reported a local news agency.

Mubarak, who led Egypt with an iron fist for three decades, has already spent three years in prison on other charges.

In May, another court sentenced him and his two sons to three years without parole in a new corruption trial.
