  • Eid-el-Kabir: FRSC deploys 140 personnel in Badagry

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Badagry Command, on Friday said that it had deployed 140 personnel ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, slated for Aug. 21 and Aug. 22.

    The Unit Commander, Mr Fatai Bakare, told our reporter in Badagry that the step was taken to prevent road accidents and ensure free flow of traffic during the Sallah holidays.

    He said that the command had 90 staff and 50 special Marshal that would be on duty during Muslim festival, adding that no personnel would be given leave or pass until after the celebration.

    According to him, the officials will be stationed at black spots and accident-prone areas, to ensure that motorists abide by traffic rules.

    “Our officials are going to be alert during this period, and would be deployed at different locations in Badagry and Seme areas.

    “We have marked areas like Iya-Afin Road, Mowo bend, Aradagun, Gbaji and Badagry Roundabout; we will monitor these areas 24 hours during the celebration.

    “I want to assure the public that there will be no case of accidents during this period,’’ Bakare said.

    Bakare said that the command had been enlightening the public on the need to ensure accident-free Eid-el-Kabir festival.

    “On Wednesday, we were in Badagry Market; on Friday, we will go to the mosque during the Juma’a service, and on Sunday, we will visit the churches.

    “The campaign is to ensure an accident-free festival, and to ensure that motorists abide by traffic rules,” he said.

    Bakare said that the command would partner with para-military agencies like the police and Civil Defence, to ensure that things go well during the holidays.

    He, however, advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any trip during the festival.

    Eid-el-Kabir: Rams sellers lament low patronage in Yenagoa

    As the Eid-el-Kabir celebration gradually winds up, rams sellers in most markets in Yenagoa, said they could not record brisk sales during the period because of low patronages.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a cross section of them disclosed this development during a survey of some markets in Yenagoa on Saturday.

    The popular Swali market where animals are sold was seen deserted as sellers eagerly awaited buyers.

    Malam Abdulahi Usman said that he could not make sales during the celebration, adding that he had many unsold rams left in his stock.

    He said that the supply was much this season while demand fell, adding that the later could be because of the prevailing economic situation.

    Alhaji Mamud Shinkafir, the Chairman of the Cow Sellers Association in the market said the members were taken aback this season as a result of poor patronages resulting in low sales of animals.

    “They are still waiting for customers, may be some could catch up today by making good sales, but so far it’s been generally poor.

    “The situation is like this even though the prices of the rams were not different from that of last year,’’ he said.

    Malam Muhamed Umar, a buyer, who spoke with NAN in the market however countered Shinkafir’s position who said prices of rams remained unchanged.
    According to Umar, the prices of rams have soared beyond the reach of the average buyer.

    He said that in 2016, an average sized ram that sold for N60, 000 was now selling for N80, 000.

    NAN reports that Muslim faithful are spiritually mandated to slaughter rams during the Ed-el-Kabir festival.

    FRSC deploys 33,000 personnel for Sallah

    The Federal Road Safety Corps has approved the deployment of 33,000 regular and special marshals, 859 patrol vehicles, 106 ambulances, 267 motorbikes and 22 tow trucks for the 2017 Eid-el-kabir celebrations.

    This is to address wrong road usage by motorists which results in a high number of crashes during festivities.

    The Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, emphasized that the operation will focus on traffic control, speeding, dangerous driving/overtaking, clearance of road obstructions, seatbelt use violation, zero tolerance for use of telephone while driving, lane indiscipline and route violation among others as these have been identified as reoccurring factors of Road Traffic Crashes.

    In a press statement released by the Spokesman, he stated that the 2017 Eid-El-Kabir Sallah Special patrol operation is scheduled to commence from August 31 to September 6, 2017.The personnel have been briefed appropriately to perform their duties which include public enlightenment,traffic calming, traffic control, enforcement and rescue services, he stated.

    Kazeem said the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, wishes to remind Nigerians that the holiday is for celebration with family members and loved ones especially for the Muslim faithful.

    In this regard, motorists are advised to bear in mind the need to adhere to the stipulated traffic rules and regulations to and from their travel destinations as over 200 mobile courts would be set up to prosecute erring offenders.

    In an event of an emergency, the FRSC said a toll-free line, 122, or its emergency line 0700-CALL-FRSC (0700-22553772) could be called for prompt response.

    FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

    The Federal Government has declared Friday, Sept. 1 and Monday, Sept. 4 as Public Holidays to mark the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.


    The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau‎, made the statement on behalf of the Federal Government on Monday in Abuja.

    Dr Rufai Attahiru, overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary in the ministry signed the statement in Abuja on Monday.

    The minister urged Muslim faithful and all Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, prosperity and the stability of the country’s democracy.

    Dambazau called on Nigerians to join hands with the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, in its determination to build a peaceful and harmonious country.‎

    He assured Nigerians of safety in all parts of the country, emphasising that security agencies had been directed to maintain peace and protect lives and property during and after the celebration.

    Danbazau condemned in strong terms, the prevalence of hate speeches in the country and warned that the Federal Government would henceforth deal with perpetrators according to the law.

    He stressed that government would continue to foster peaceful coexistence, national cohesion and stability in its march toward actualising the full potential of Nigeria.

    The minister wished all Nigerians a most rewarding and Happy Eid-el-Kabir celebration.‎

    Eld-el-kabir: Lagos to commence sales of lake rice on Thursday

    In preparation for the forthcoming Eid-El-Kabir celebration, the Lagos Government is commencing sales of  lake rice on Thursday, August 24 in various centre across the state.

    The Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon Oluwatoyin Suarau, who disclosed in his office in the  Alausa Ikeja, states that  the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode has approved  some centres for the distribution and sales of the rice. These include the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas; the Agricultural Development Area Complex, Oko-oba, Agege; LTV Blue Roof Complex, Agidingbi, Ikeja, and other designated centers across the state.

    He    restated that the prices remained the same as N12,000 for 50kg bag, N6,000 for 25kg , and N2,500 for 10kg.

    According to the   commissioner, the rice is for all Lagosians, irrespective of their religion or tribes.

    He reiterated   that the present administration will continue to ensure adequate production and a fair distribution of the rice across the state as it will be made available to the masses in the various accredited centers in the state.

    According to him, the present administration has embarked on policies and programmes that will enhance the availability of food in the state.

    Ram dealers record low sales in Jigawa

    Less than two weeks to the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, ram dealers in Hadejia, Jigawa are recording low patronage, a check by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has shown.

    A NAN check at Hadejia and Kumsa cattle market on Friday, showed that prices had fallen by about 20 per cent, compared to the same period last year.

    The low patronage had also pushed prices down, few days to the Sallah festivities.

    Eid-el-Kabir celebration is marked on the 10th day of Zul-Hajj; the 12th months of the Isalmic calendar during which Muslims faithful make animal sacrifices.

    NAN checks indicated that an average ram was sold for N20, 000, as against its previous price of N25, 000, while sheep attract as low as N 10,000 as against N15, 000 it sold last season.

    Cattle prices was also affected, as a well-bred bull was sold at N140, 000 as against its old price of N170, 000.

    Alhaji Ari Usman, a ram dealer, said that the market condition was not encouraging due to the low sales recorded in the last few days.

    “We are not making good sales, as very few people are buying the animals at the market,” he said, adding that sales were low this year.

    However, another trader, Baba Jibril, expressed the hope that the market condition would improve in the coming days.

    Malam Buba Audu , a resident, described the drop in prices as a “welcome development”, noting that, the situation would enable most families to slaughter rams and celebrate the season in a happy mood.

    NAN also reports that Kumsa market is one of the major animal trading centre in the state; where goats, cattle, sheep, camel and donkeys from Yobe and Niger Republic are transported to other parts of the country.
