  • Youths urged to embrace education

A non-governmental organisation (NGO), the 1 GAME Campaigns, has said that its activities in Nigeria’s North-East region were aimed at building a new generation of children who will stand against violence and terror due to the education they had acquired.

The organisation recently launched campaigns aimed at supporting school children with learning materials and improving enrolment into western schools in Borno and Gombe states situated in North-East Nigeria, a region that is so vulnerable to terrorist attacks and whose attackers campaign against western education.

Addressing Muslim youths in the southern city of Calabar during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, founder of 1 GAME, Philip Obaji said it would be almost impossible for children to be recruited into insurgent groups in North-East Nigeria if every child is educated.

“I hear some people say the reason for the insurgency in the North-East region is political. Some say it’s a fight over supremacy of religion while there’s a debate about the actual reason for the insurgency. No one has argued about who the foot soldiers are.

“Isn’t it clear that they are the ignorant children and youths who have been talked into taking their own lives by fighting against western culture just because they lack basic education?

“That is exactly what I see; ignorant children fighting against a culture that has saved many of us from hunger, poverty and disease.

“Is it easy to ask an educated child to pick up arms to fight for no meaningful reason? Again, is it easy to ask an educated child to pick up a bomb and take his life along with others just because of a dislike towards western culture?

“So, you see where the problem is. People mislead our children because they are ignorant and uneducated,” he said.

Obaji also called on Nigerian youths to play a leading role in the fight against violence by inspiring children into embracing education and supporting initiatives that are helping to put kids into school, saying “it’s the simplest way to defeat terrorism in Nigeria.”

“Yes the military is fighting to defeat terrorism. But like I’ve always said, military action alone wouldn’t solve the problem. We need to ensure that the current generation of children shuns this evil. That can only be achieved if we give them the right education, which is what we are fighting for,” he said.

  • Boko Haram has nothing to do with religion, ethnicity- Jonathan

Boko Haram has nothing to do with religion, ethnicity- Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has said the the terrorist killings in the country has no religious or ethnic link.

He spoke at the Presidential Villa while receiving the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, who led the Muslim community to pay Sallah homage on him after the Eid-El-Kabir morning prayers.

According to him, the killings is because the world is generally experiencing terrorism.

“That is why I asked those who killed those 50 students did they even bother about their religion or ethnicity? It has nothing to do with religion, it has nothing to do with ethnicity,” he said

He however said there was need for Nigerians to  “talk to ourselves in  the way that our children will not develop hate amongst themselves.”

“At times, when you listen to radio and read in the papers and you see  sometimes even our elders that are supposed to give us leadership quarreling over nothing, sometimes even insulting themselves and even making provocative statements that will sometimes instigate one group against the other.

” We decided that we cannot continue that way, the talking must have a direction. What has been happening on the pages of the newspapers are discussions that have no direction.”

“We want a country that will have a direction so  the discussions must have a direction, the discussion must lead Nigeria to where we want to be, not a divided Nigeria, not a Nigeria that is sown on hate, not a Nigeria that will be based on acrimony, ethnicity and tribal sentiments in the way we conduct ourselves.”

“That is a reason we set up that committee and we have given them the free will. Some people are still instigating others that the president is doing this, the government does not have the capacity to do that. We are totally committed to do what is right.”

He thanked the muslim community and other visitors for finding time to pay homage.

He said: “Some of you have been consistent. We thank God that inspite of the challenges we are celebrating.”

“We have challenges but I’m glad that Allah made it possible for us to be here today. Other countries have had their own challenges, 53 years is a long period for an adult but as a nation we are very young.”

Speaking earlier, Vice President Sambo congratulated the President’s successful outing at the recent United Nations General Assembly in the United States, Nigeria’s 53rd Independent anniversary and Super Eagle’s victory over Ethiopia in the first leg world cup qualifier.

He also commended the efforts of the President towards ensuring political stability in the country.

According to him, the National Conference initiated by the President was also commendable as it would promote peace and the unity of the country.

At the occasion  were  Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim; former PDP National Chairman, Ahmadu Ali; Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar and National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki rtd and John Cardinal Onayeikan.

  • Leaders preach peace on Eid-el-Kabir

    Leaders preach peace on Eid-el-Kabir

MOSLEMS got yesterday a plea from the President and other leaders– they should pray for peace.

President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President David Mark, and House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and All Progressives Congress (APC) leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu stressed the need for peace and tolerance.

Jonathan said: “As they undergo the rites of the Hajj in the Holy Land, and celebrate the Feast of Sacrifice here at home, I urge our Islamic faithful to offer special prayers for peace, harmony, unity, security and progress in our fatherland.”

“I also implore them, as always, to find time in the midst of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, to meditate on the immense benefits our nation can derive from a greater exhibition by its people of piety, honesty, selflessness, tolerance, peaceful co-existence with others, equity, fairness and justice for all, which are an integral part of the message of the Holy Prophet.”

Jonathan added: “My administration will continue to promote and encourage the teaching of these commendable virtues of Islam and our other religious beliefs in the knowledge that a greater manifestation of such virtues and ideals by our people will stand our country in very good stead as we strive to overcome the challenges of development and build a great nation.”

“My administration also remains fully committed to the implementation of measures and policies that will further promote and enhance national peace, stability and progress.”

On the national conversation, he said: “It is in keeping with that avowed commitment and my firm belief in the right to freedom of expression and the right of all people in a democracy to make choices on how they wish to live and be governed that I recently announced plans for an orderly national conversation on our problems and challenges. Those who continue to say that the initiative is diversionary or aimed at promoting certain political ambitions are in error.”

“Our sincere objective is to create an acceptable and workable platform for a national dialogue or conference that will help us to resolve the issues that still cause tension and friction in the polity, reinforce the ties that bind the country’s many ethnic nationalities and ensure that Nigeria’s immense diversity continues to be a source of strength and greatness.”

“Our desire is for the greatest possible majority of Nigerians to key into the process and agree on the best way forward for our dear nation.”

Dr. Jonathan went on: “We have been greatly encouraged in this regard by the very positive reaction of various national interest groups to the initiative and I seize the opportunity of this occasion to urge all other Nigerians to give their fullest possible support to this renewed effort to harness the efficacy of dialogue and consensus-building for the future well-being and progress of our beloved nation.”

“I assure all Nigerians that going forward, my administration will continue to give very focused and purposeful leadership to the nation. We remain committed to achieving significant improvements in the living conditions of all Nigerians through the diligent implementation of our agenda for national transformation.”

Mark urged Nigerians to close ranks and work together to make the country a peaceful and better place for all .

The Senate President noted with pain the unabating security challenges facing the country and pleaded with all Nigerians to tackle the menace.

It quoted Mark to have remarked that “with the collective resolve and determination of all of us we can solve the problem and live like one big united nation where no one is oppressed or afraid of each other”.

“I believe that our size and diversity is our strength. God did not make mistake in putting us together in one country. We should, therefore, use our strength and God given potentials for good,” Mark said

It said that Mark noted that in spite of the challenges, Nigerians should have “unshakeable faith in the ability and capability of our people to overcome the obstacles saying that the problem of Nigerians can only be solved by Nigerians themselves.”

“That is why we must agree as a people to address our problems in an open, frank and honest manner because nobody is coming from the moon or space to solve our problems,” he added.

He said that the platform offered by the national conference or dialogue committee is a needed elixir and avenue to reconcile any misgivings.

He implored all Nigerians to take advantage of the National Conference to present their positions so that “we can continue to live in peace and united like a people with a common mission and purpose”.

Tambuwal urged Nigerians to redouble their efforts and work for the country’s unity and progress.

He said the Eid-el-Kabir celebration calls for repentance and forgiveness of one another especially now that the country is facing numerous challenges.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, Tambuwal enjoined Nigerians to be steadfast in love to one another. He said that it is by so doing that we can be committed to what is just and right for our nation.

The Speaker assured that the National Assembly would continue to be guided by the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians in the onerous task of making laws for peace, unity and good governance of the Nation.
