Foundation launches mission to free 1,000 prisoners

Group Chief Executive Officer of Moneda Invest Africa, Ejike Egbuagu, has launched the Egbuagu Foundation devoted to advocacy.

The event marked the debut of the foundation and his 40th birthday, a symbolic moment to unveil a mission to free 1,000 wrongfully imprisoned Nigerians and provide creative rehabilitation through art and income-generating skills.

Egbuagu reflected on the human cost of Nigeria’s broken justice system, “Too many Nigerians are serving time for offences they did not commit. Justice in this country often depends on how much money you have or who you know. That has to change. While we fight for legal freedom, we also seek to heal and restore dignity through art.”

In 2024, Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), Prof. Uju Agomoh, said 70 per cent of inmates in Nigeria are awaiting trail, with some centres reporting rates as high as 90 to 93 per cent. Many are held without access to legal aid. In response, the foundation is partnering legal experts and advocates to review cases and restore the freedom of those unjustly incarcerated.

The foundation is also launching programmes to equip incarcerated individuals with artistic skills — enabling them to produce and sell their work while rebuilding self-worth and economic opportunity.

The occasion closed with a toast to Egbuagu’s 40th, and marked the start of a movement for justice, creativity, and transformation. ‘‘We standfor justice with heart and freedom with purpose — because no Nigerian should be silenced by injustice.
