Bidvest Wits sets target for Uzoenyi in new contract

Come and add strength to our attacking force. That was the mandate given to Nigerian international and former Memelodi Sundown’s winger Ejike Uzoenyi by South African Premier Soccer League side Bidvest Wits after handing him a short contract to the end of the season.
Uzoenyi, who parted ways with Sundown at the start of the year, have been without a contract since then and the Bidvest Wits deal will offer him an opportunity to rejuvenate his career in PSL.
The 24-year-old becomes the Clever Boys’ second signing this year after the capture of Granwald Scott.
The club announced Uzoenyi’s deal on its website Wednesday saying “We are pleased to welcome Chris Uzoenyi to the family. Good luck as you add strength to our attacking force.”
The Super Eagles ace made minimal appearance for Sundown and will be hoping to enjoy better playing time at Bidvest.
Wits‚ are three points off Absa Premiership leaders Cape Town City having played three games less. The Gavin Hunt tutored side are desperate to win the Professional Soccer league this season, the closest they came to winning was in 2002/2003 season when they finished third. They had a very poor run the 2004/2005 season finishing in the 16th position leading to relegation but bounced back to finish in the 13th position in the 2006/2007season.

EJIKE UZOENYI: Loveth and I share things in common

THE atmosphere was stirring with the scent of love and romance in the air. The occasion was the wedding of Ejike Christantus Uzoenyi, Super Eagles and Mamelodi Sundown’s playmaker, at St Brigids Catholic Church, Enugu.

The ceremony also attracted who is who in government and football circle in the country, all to honour Uzoenyi,  as he tied the nuptial knots with delectable Chioma Loveth Abum.

From the church to the reception, which held at the high profile Blue Island Hotel & Suites in Independence Layout, Enugu, the celebration of love was witnessed by an impressive guests list, among them Enugu State Chief of Staff, Chief Victor Atuonwu; Commissioner for Commerce & industry, Dr Jude Akubuilo; Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barrister Steve Oruruo; member of Enugu State House, Hon. John-Bull Nwagu; former Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief Abel Chukwu; and former Rangers Chairman, Davidson Owumi.

Top shots in the sports circle also graced the wedding and among them were NFF president represented by Enugu FA Chairman, Offor Okenwa, Super Eagles Coordinator Emmanuel Attah, Super Eagles Secretary Dayo Elebi, Head of Legal Dept, Okey Obi, former Commissioner for Youth & Sports, Barrister Ray Nnaji, a representative of Ejike’s club, Mamelodi Sundown of South Africa , the first captain of Pepsi Football Academy, Offor Jideofor, Sylvanus Okpala , Okey Emordi, Chidi Nwantu and former Sports Editor of the defunct Satellite newspapers, Edwin Eze, who discovered Ejike at the age of nine years when he cut his teeth in football with the Pepsi Football Academy, Enugu.

Wearing a smile and looking quite pleased with himself throughout the ceremony, the MVP of the last CHAN tourney in South Africa, exclusively told Sport & Style that marrying his girlfriend of five years is the ‘cleverest’ goal he has scored in his career.

He noted they have been friends before proposing to her and getting married to her is a dream come true.

“Loveth and I started going out five years ago but it was as if I have known her all my life. She is not only beautiful outwardly, she is also beautiful inwardly. I found in her a friend and that is why we are going on with this. So I can say I married my friend because we share a lot of things in common and whenever we are together, we do enjoy each other’s company very much.”

So how did he meet his wife? Uzoenyi informed that he met her while he was playing in Rangers through a mutual friend. “We were leaving in the same neighbourhood and through a mutual friend we started talking and became friendly. We started dating a while later and that led to what the whole world has witnessed today.”

The former Rangers player further said marriage would impact positively on his game.

“I am a firm believer that marriage completes a man and when you are married you tend to do things more maturely because you are no longer single. I believe that I will be a better player with marriage. Before marriage, you don’t feel settled, for you come home to an empty home. But now you know that you have somebody in the house when you are coming back from training or a match and you tend to get the desired support at high or low points of your life. That will make me to be a better player.”

Uzoenyi added that though his wife does not like football so much, her interest in the game has improved tremendously since we met. “She is now a lover of the game because of me. She knows one or two players now and can argue about their potential with other football fans.”

Since August 31, when he made his debut for his South Africa side in a 2-0 victory over Mazola in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) game, Ejike has been enjoying his career in South Africa.

After the initial battle to get his work permit, Uzoenyi played the last 15 minutes of the game replacing Surprise Moriri and thereafter settled in nicely.

He has also earned the praises of his coach, Pitso Mosimane, on several occasions.

Says Mosimane on the Nigerian: “Ejike showed class when he came in. But at that time the game is dead, so you give him a run so he can get the feel. He showed some class, he’s a good football player,”

    Uzoenyi sets for Sundowns return

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Ejike Uzoenyi, is expected to arrive in South Africa next week after his loan deal at Enugu Rangers officially expired, kickOffNigeria.com reports.

The speedy winger has been given an extended break following his participation at the 2014 FIFA World Cup with the Super Eagles and though he is still in Nigeria, he will not continue with Rangers when the Nigerian Premier League resumes next week.

Sundowns had confirmed that the 22-year-old winger will return to Chloorkop next week.

Uzoenyi’s handlers have also confirmed that he has been given a longer break to enable him to recover from the effects of playing non-stop football for the past 18 months.

“He [Uzoenyi] is still in Nigeria but his loan deal at Rangers expired on June 30. He should now be heading to his parent club Sundowns and will actually be reporting for training within the next 10 days because he has played a lot of football over the past year,” one of his representatives told kickOffNigeria.com.

South African club awaits Uzoenyi, Sumaila

South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns newcomer, Ejike Uzoenyi and Ghanaian defender Rashid Sumaila are yet to report for pre-season training with the club after featuring at the World Cup.

The pair, though, will soon arrive at Chloorkop, according to Sundowns spokesman, Kabelo Mosito.

“Rashid is also not yet here but they will soon be arriving after participating in the World Cup,” Mosito said.

KickOffNigeria.com reports that Sundowns signed Uzoenyi – who was named CHAN’s player of the tournament – earlier this year but he was immediately loaned back to his former club Enugu Rangers for the rest of the last campaign.

Sumaila impressed in his maiden PSL showing last term, and has attracted interest from Turkish Super Lig side Akhisar Belediyespor.

World Cup: Rangers ‘unhappy’ with Uzoenyi, Mba’s exclusion

Enugu Rangers has expressed disappointment at the exclusion of Ejike Uzoenyi from Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil.

The Flying Antelopes’ media officer, Foster Chime, told KickOffNigeria.com that he was surprised by the exclusion of Uzoenyi, who was voted the Most Valuable Player at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) held earlier in the year in South Africa, as well as Sunday Mba, the team’s ex-player, who was the hero of Nigeria’s 2013 Nations Cup winning side.

“I just heard this morning. I won’t say it’s unfortunate because Stephen Keshi has said before now that he knows by heart the squad he will take to Brazil. So maybe before now he had already made up his mind that both Ejike and Mba will not make the team,” Chime told KickOffNigeria.com on Tuesday morning.

He, however, cited the inclusion of Uche Nwofor and Michael Uchebo as a moral victory for the club, who had always produced players for the various national teams over the years.

“But it’s ok since Uchebo and Nwofor have made the team. Both of them are ex-Rangers players, and they went to Europe from here,” he added.

Chime insisted that he would have preferred if both Uzoenyi and Mba in the team as they would have added a creative flair to the team, which is seemingly lacking in the current selection.

He, however, stated that Keshi “knows how to succeed” and must have chosen a squad that fits his plans.

“The Chief Coach knows what he wants, and he knows how to succeed. So if he feels this is the squad that will give us success, then it’s ok. He’s the coach, he’s in charge.”

    Uzoenyi joins Sundowns

Top South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns, has signed Super Eagles winger, Ejike Uzoenyi , on a four-year contract, the club announced on Thursday.

According to the official website of Sundowns, Uzoenyi will join the team in June.

Negotiations for the player’s acquisition have been ongoing since after the CHAN Tournament and the player is excited to have finally concluded the deal.

“Joining a club like Sundowns is a great deal for me because the club’s ambitions to conquer Africa are in line with my career objectives as a player,” MTNFootball.com quoted Uzoenyi as saying on the club website.

“The other thing that made me join the club is that Coach Pitso had a chat with me before I joined and we had a discussion about his plans for me and I feel that I’m ready for the challenge.”

The Enugu Rangers left winger was the top star at CHAN, where his goals helped Nigeria to finish third.

He had a short stint with French club Rennes in 2013.

    Uzoenyi signs one-year Rangers deal

Ejike Uzoenyi, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the just-concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN), has signed a fresh contract with Rangers International FC of Enugu.

The General Manager of the club, Paul Ozor, made the disclosure in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

NAN reports that Uzoenyi’s new deal comes after his professional deal with South African clubs Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, flopped.

Ozor, who failed to disclose the details of the contract, said the deal would run through the 2013/2014 league season.

“We cannot disclose the details of the contract but he has signed for Enugu Rangers for the new league season in line with the rules and regulations of the League Management Company (LMC). He (Uzoenyi) is thanking the club for giving him all the support that helped him to succeed at the 2014 CHAN in South Africa. The other players are also happy with him because of the way he relates with them,’’ Ozor said.

He also told NAN that the 2014 CHAN MVP had already joined the rest of his team mates in the team’s training camp in Oba near Onitsha in Anambra.

He commended the LMC for its approval of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, as venue for Rangers FC home matches for the season.

“This is one of the best stadia in Nigeria and we have two others as alternatives. We have the UNEC Stadium and the Rangers camp football pitch,’’ he said.

The Rangers GM noted that the postponement of the kick-off date for the new Globacom Premier League season from Feb. 23 to the weekend of March 7 would give the clubs more time to prepare.

Ozor further pointed out that the postponement would also give the LMC time to carry out a thorough inspection of the stadia selected for the Globacom Premier League matches. He urged the LMC to be firm in taking decisions in the forthcoming Globacom Premier League season to instil sanity in the league.

    From Tunde Liadi,Owerri

Enugu Rangers have stated that their CHAN Eagles’ duo of Ejike Uzoenyi and Ogonna Uzochukwu will report to their Nnewi camp today after the coaches accepted their pleas to be given some days off to be in top shape after the conclusion of the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) hosted in South Africa.

Rangers paraded four players at the CHAN: Chigozie Agbim, Christian Obiozor, Uzoenyi and Uzochukwu and all gave good account of themselves. They contributed in no small measure to the Super Eagles’ bronze medal finish in their maiden participation in the competition meant for players plying their trade in their nations’ leagues.

Uzoenyi was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the competition while Obiozor came off the substitute bench to score the winning goal against the Brave Warriors of Zimbabwe in the third place match.

Speaking with SportingLife on telephone, Rangers’ Director of Media and Publicity, Foster Chime revealed that Obiozor had since resumed at the club’s pre season camp in Nnewi and featured in the team’s last two friendly matches and that the remaining two were given additional time off by the technical crew.

Rangers ended last season’s campaign in fifth position with 58 points from 38 matches and they are targeting a place in the top three to secure a place on the continent.

Meanwhile, the Flying Antelopes played two friendly matches against Gabros United and Dolphins at Nnewi last weekend, with both ties ending in a draw. They played a 2-2 draw against Gabros while they held Dolphins to a goalless draw.

    Uzoenyi set to rejoin Rangers

Ejike Uzoenyi is set to rejoin Nigeria Professional Football League outfit Enugu Rangers in preparation for the 2014 league season.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) most valuable player failed to secure a contract in South Africa after being linked with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Supersport United following his impressive displays in the competition.

Uzoenyi has now made a resolve to leave concession with his manager as he helps the Flying Antelopes prepare for the Glo Premier League season expected to begin on February 23.

“I’m back in Nigeria now after holding talks with a club in South Africa. Nothing has been agreed upon yet but my manager will continue to discuss with them,” Uzoenyi told SuperSport.com.

Reports had it that the former Rennes player held talks with Supersport United earlier this week with Matsatsantsa discontinuing talks about a possible move.

    Egwuekwe passes Wits FC medical

THERE are strong indications that Warri Wolves FC of Warri’s defender Azubuike Egwuekwe has passed the medicals conducted by Wits FC of South Africa’s doctors and looks poised to sign for the South African side.

Timi Ebikagboro, former media officer of Warri Wolves, has revealed that Egwuekwe has already undergone a medical in South Africa.

Ebikagboro wrote on his Facebook page: “Super Eagles and Warri Wolves defender Azubuike Egwuekwe having done his medical and with Emmanuel Ibru on the ground in South Africa to finalise the deal will hopefully sign for Wits FC of South Africa, while Ejike Uzoenyi will likely sign for Orlando Pirates of South Africa.”

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt is believed to be an admirer of Warri Wolves skipper Egwuekwe, with the towering centre-back representing a perfect addition to the Wits backline after they released Musa Bilankulu to Bloemfontein Celtic.

KickOff.com has learnt that Nigerian stars Ejike Uzoenyi, Azubuike Egwuekwe and Solomon Kwambe are close to sealing moves to South African clubs.

Uzoenyi was named Chan MVP at the conclusion of the tournament held in South Africa, and is believed to be a transfer target for Orlando Pirates.

The trio did not return with the rest of the Super Eagles squad on Sunday night when the team arrived in Lagos, adding weight to speculation that they are locked in negotiations with PSL clubs.
