  • ‘Emmanuel, Akpabio, Ekere should embrace peace’

A coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Network Advancement Programme for Poverty and Disaster Risks Reduction (NAPPDRR), has urged winners and losers in the just concluded elections to embrace peace.

President of NAPPDRR Al Mustapher Edoho praised the peaceful exercise and urged politicians to be in the vanguard of maintaining peace.

He said: “My organisation was one of the independent observers which monitored the elections in parts of Akwa Ibom, and I can say the exercise was generally peaceful.

“Elections anywhere in the world can never be completely free of malpractices. We hail the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mike Igini, for conducting the most credible elections in Akwa Ibom since the return to democracy in 1999. We thus urge the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Nnsima Ekere, to accept defeat.

“The NGO congratulates the governor and urge him to be magnanimous in victory, by extending his hand of fellowship to Senator Godswill Akpabio, Ekere and other opposition leaders, for peace and development.”

  • A’Ibom: Ekere optimistic of victory

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom, Obong Nsima Ekere, has said he is optimistic of defeating his opponent, Governor Udom Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ekere, who cast his vote at about 10.49am at unit 004 ward 6, Ikot Oborenyin, Edemaya, Ikot Abasi LGA, hailed the peaceful conduct of the exercise in his polling unit.

He was accompanied by his wife, Ese, who also voted. According to him, the governorship/assembly elections were more orderly and peaceful in the state than the presidential/national assembly elections.

He, however, condemned pockets of violence in some areas in the state allegedly perpetrated by the PDP with assistance from hired hoodlums. The APC governorship candidate mentioned Ibiono Ibom local government area as one of the flashpoints of violence.

Ekere revealed that he has already contacted security agencies on the threat to the exercise by agents of the PDP.

  • Ekere’ll emerge Akwa Ibom governor, says Prophet

An elder in The Apostolic Church and a newspaper distributor, Mr. Effiong Etukudoh, has predicted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Obong Nsima Ekere, will win Saturday’s election in Akwa Ibom State, “based on the word of God”.

Etukudoh said in an interview with The Nation in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital that the Lord revealed to him as far back as 2017 that Ekere will emerge as the governor of the state in 2019, a time the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was not even in contention for the position.

He said: “What I want to tell you is that when God says this is what is going to happen, nobody can stop it. The PDP in Akwa Ibom plays politics of blindness, because they close their eyes to the realities of the day.

“I got this revelation in 2017 and I told people here that Nsima Ekere would become governor of Akwa Ibom State on 2019. By that time, he had not even mentioned that he was going to contest in 2019.

“So, when the primary came last year, everybody expected Senator John Udoedehe to win the ticket, because he is somebody that is well known. But, I told them that the person that would emerge as the APC flag bearer is Nsima Ekere.”

The prophet said the APC candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will carry the day, just as his Sokoto State counterpart, Ahmed Aliyu, will triumph in the Northwest state.

His words: “In Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will win. This because Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the godfather of Lagos politics. Tinubu is the only man that has played politics according to the rules of the game; hence he has succeeded so far.

In Sokoto, APC will win, but Delta State is a battleground.

In Imo State, Governor Rochas Okorocha is insisting that his son in law, Uche Nwosu, will win, but I don’t know about that, because it is not even certain that elections will hold in Imo on Saturday.

“The problem that will rear its head will be like that of Akwa Ibom State: the election will not be hitch-free like the presidential and National Assembly elections.”

Etukudoh said when he predicted in 2018 that former President Olusegun Obasanjo would be retired from politics in 2019, because his candidate will not win, people did not believe him, because he is a commoner.

“Nobody believed me, but it has come to pass,” he added.

  • Ekere promises inclusive government

Akwa Ibom State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Nsima Ekere has promised the people an inclusive and open government if elected.A

Ekere gave the assurance when the Board of Trustees, Executives and members of the Akwa Ibom Community Association in the 19 northern states and Abuja met to endorse him.

The event held at the Akwa Ibom House in Abuja at the weekend.

Ekere told the gathering that he had mapped out a sustainable development plan that would involve Akwa Ibom citizens from every part of the world. He promised that his government’s blueprint would capture the very essence of participatory economic growth, which includes a N20 billion fund for strategic enterprise development.

He said: “We are poised to give our people a government that would be responsive, responsible and all inclusive. Our people will be allowed to explore their entrepreneurship skills for job creation and economic empowerment.

“I thank you for this love and support for the APC, and promise that we shall live up to the people’s expectations. I thank you for the sacrifices you have made so far, and enjoin you to come to Akwa Ibom and mobilise the people for a government that would take our state to the centre of politics in Nigeria.”

President of the Association Comrade Tom Etim Okon extolled Ekere and pledged his support for his candidature. He described Ekere as a man who has the requisite experience and capacity to govern the state.

Okon recalled that as deputy governor, and as Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Ekere performed above and beyond. He assured him of his members’ support, even as he noted that members of the association would mobilise for Ekere and will be in the state to vote for him.

  • Ekere to complete abandoned projects in Udom’s town

Worried by the abandonment of the Onna – Etinan Road which leads to the village of Governor Udom Emmanuel, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere, has promised to complete the road as soon as he becomes governor on May 29, 2019.

Obong Ekere, who made the promise during the APC campaign rally in Onna, Governor Emmanuel’s local government area, said he would take the completion of the road as a priority on his assumption of office, having watched the governor struggle in vain to complete the road for more than three and half years.

“It is not as if they don’t want to do it but they don’t know how to do it. The man that knows how to complete that road is Nsima Ekere,” he said.

Obong Ekere told the cheering crowd that, as Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), he completed the construction of road side drains at Ikot Edor – Ukpana Road and the renovation of classroom blocks in five primary and secondary schools in Ntan Ide, Okat, Ikwe, Nung Oku Ekanem and Ikot Edor villages of Onna.

According to him, construction work on two road projects in Onna, namely Afaha Ubium – Edem Idim Ishiet – Ikot Akpan Road and environs and Ikot Ekong – Ntafre – Opolom – Ikot Inyang Road, cutting across Onna, Mkpat Enin and Ibeno Local Government Areas, were ongoing under his watch before he resigned from office recently.

The rally featured the presentation of symbolic insignia of the office of governor to Obong Ekere by Archbishop Samuel Akpan, Governor Emmanuel’s kinsman, on behalf of Onna people.

Archbishop Akpan said that Onna people were willingly conceding the governorship seat to Obong Ekere because of the governor’s poor performance.

Mr. Samuel Mbosoh, the Onna APC Chapter Chairman, apologised to Akwa Ibom people for Governor Emmanuel’s many failures in government.

He accused the governor of concentrating the few development projects in his village, Awa Iman, to the detriment of other parts of Onna and appealed to Obong Ekere to locate a modular refinery, an oil palm processing mill, a fish processing mill and a garri processing factory across Onna.

The APC campaign team had earlier paid homage to the Paramount Ruler, Edidem Raymond Inyang, who described Obong Ekere as his long-time friend and led his chiefs in a prayer session for the APC standard bearer and his running mate, Dr. Amadu Attai, in which he sued for peaceful elections.

  • ‘Why Ekere should succeed Emmanuel’

Former House of Representatives member Eseme Eyiboh examines the quest for power shift in Akwa Ibom State and why the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nsima Ekere, should succeed Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The Nigerian democratic space is bereft of ideological content and identifiable programme of activities to engage statutory governance requirements after electoral victory. The poverty of the philosophy of governance has remained the bane of the current Akwa Ibom state government occasioning adhoc initiatives and blurred vision. For Obong Nsima Ekere, this is an absurdity  that must be reversed. The result is a well articulated and defined roadmap “The New Vision for our collective prosperity”.

Among the various politicians trying to pitch to the electorate in this season of electoral activities, Obong Nsima Ekere, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party in Akwa Ibom stands out in the crowd. His manifesto struck a chord with the people as an agenda of sweeping reforms and bold initiatives that extends over areas usually ignored. As outlined in the agenda he unveiled, he is especially keen to restructure key institutions that are central to the enshrinement and deepening of good governance. By this token, governance and institutional reforms is an important pillar of his five-point (Economic Prosperity, Infrastructure & Rural Development, Education, Health & Social Protection, Security, Governance and institutional reforms) agenda.

Across the states of the federation, governance deficit and institutional weakness is a malaise that has affected both public and private sectors.  These lapses undermine the capacity of a state to attract significant investment; by extension, they stunt meaningful development and progress. Akwa Ibom is an example of these negative  consequences . For instance, regardless that the state is one of the top two leading oil producing states, it is not on the list of five states mentioned in the World Bank ranking of Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria.

Hence, much of Akwa Ibom’s need is not so much about inadequate resources as it is about repositioning key institutions to become more functional, focused, purpose-driven and result-oriented. This might be a tall order, but for Ekere, it is a familiar territory. He has done similar work at NDDC, which, hitherto, was mired in bureaucracy and marred by inefficiency. Upon his appointment, Ekere has transformed the NDDC into operations and has been praised by governors of the Niger Delta states. It is the same pragmatism he will bring to bear if elected governor of Akwa Ibom State. A hint of his capability is reflected in the vision and strategy clearly outlined in his manifesto.

He is not waiting till after the election is won before working out his action plan. The plans he outlined shows his level of preparedness to turnaround the fortune of Akwa Ibom.

Of the five “Pillars of Change” in his agenda, the fifth thematic area, Governance and Institutional Reforms, is instructive.

Under this, restoring financial autonomy to local governments tops his proposals. This is a bold step that will engender growth, opportunities and development at the grassroots. The local government system suffers from a core institutional deficit, a problem acknowledged in the Nigerian governance system, but whose reformation is like a taboo none wanted to break. Ekere proposes removing the encumbrances.

He also plans a revolutionary approach to state spending. His proposition of the adoption of zero-based budgeting instead of the traditional envelope style budgeting will help various departments and parastatals of government in the state to get the appropriate  amount of money and efficiently managed. The approach has the advantage of aligning the felt need of the state thus eliminating redundant spending and corruption.

His agenda contain the introduction of an executive bill in the State House of Assembly to pass into law the application of project Monitoring and Evaluation (M & E). This is also another smart move that will help enshrine due process and diligence in government capital expenditure and developmental projects. It is a smart way of curbing the culture of sham contracts and shoddy executions of government projects. For a long time, certain sharp practices have created a vicious cycle that drains government resources, especially where capital expenditure is concerned. An M&E initiative will plug the loopholes exploited by dubious contractors and corrupt government mandarins.

Ekere also plans to send a second executive bill to the State House of Assembly to institutionalize continuity in development planning beyond a political regime. This is a well-thought measure that will banish the culture of abandoning projects and jettisoning policies and programmes midway by new regimes. This culture, now part and parcel of the government tapestry of Nigeria, festers in various forms across the different tiers of government, a seemingly insurmountable problem that drains the country of monumental funds. Unquantifiable resources are wasted because of projects discontinued by a new regime of the same party or programmes abandoned by an opposition party that took over power. Not only will such a law put an end to the waste, but it will also ensure seamless development irrespective of the party in power. More importantly, the interest of the people will be paramount in every developmental initiative taken by the government. What Ekere proposes will be a big positive for good governance.

This is partly what he meant in his declaration to reform regulatory institutions in order “to remove outdated laws and replace them with development-friendly ones.”

With his experience as a former deputy governor of the state and his present assignment as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Ekere should understand that a motivated civil service is the fulcrum of a successful government.  That must have informed his decision to include in his agenda the repositioning of the state’s civil service.

He has pledged to ensure that the civil servants will receive their entitlement when due. “This is consistent with the place of the Civil Service as the engine room of government,” he said.

His inclusion of training programmes, promotion and other developmental issues in the interest of civil servants, is an indication that the civil service will be accorded due attention by a government headed by him.

As to attract Direct Foreign Investment, deliberate strategies will be adopted to improve the business competitiveness ranking of Akwa Ibom State.

He said: “A deliberate effort shall be made to promote partnership and cooperation with development partners to help drive critical issues of governance, sustainable development and institutional reforms.”

His agenda also rhymed with APC’s Zero tolerance for corruption and impunity. He plans to take it further by the relevant institutions of law enforcement to enhance efficiency in their operations.

Akwa Ibom APC governorship candidate while unveiling his manifesto has referred to himself as the man “to bring 21st century strategies to address the 21st century challenges that confront our people and state.”

Nsima Ekere’s pedigree indicated as much; his agenda embodies it.

  • Ekere promises to domesticate FG’s social intervention programmes

The gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere, has promised to copy and domesticate in the state all federal government’s social intervention programmes, if elected governor next year.

He made the promise during the flag off of the vocational skill training and empowerment programme for women and youths organized by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in collaboration with the Future Assured Programme, the pet project of the wife of the president, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, and the office of the representative of Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Godswill Akpabio, at his campaign grounds in Uyo at the weekend.

Ekere decried the lacklustre attitude to the social intervention programmes by the state government led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He lamented that the state government had failed to tackle the twin problems of poverty and unemployment ravaging the state and to maintain the state assets it inherited from the past government in 2015.

He commended Mrs. Buhari, who was present at the occasion, on the achievements of her pet project, pointing out that “you have showed by your project that you care for the people of Nigeria.”

Ekere, who is the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), also lauded Akpabio, the immediate past governor, for facilitating the NDE empowerment programme.

  • Ekere unfolds five-point change agenda for Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Nsima Ekere has urged his supporters and party faithful to be peaceful throughout the electioneering campaigns.

Ekere urged party members not to get into violence. He deplored the turmoil in the House of Assembly, blaming it on Governor Udom Emmanuel’s failure to respect separation of powers.

“This is the first time we have seen a sitting governor leading thugs to the House of Assembly to cause mayhem. Akwa Ibom people say no to this invasion. It is totally unnecessary and uncalled for. It is against everything that democracy represents. The separation of powers must be respected.

“Akwa Ibom people deserve peace. We appeal to every person, all actors that caused the present problem, to please ensure that they resolve it. You know how you started this problem, resolve this problem in the interest of Akwa Ibom people and in the interest of democracy.”

The governorship hopeful promised to run a government based on truth and transparency, if elected next year.

State APC Chairman Ini Okopido spoke on the post-primary unity in the party, noting that it ran contrary to the expectations of their opponents.

He announced the constitution of the APC campaign organisation with a member of the party’s Board of Trustees, Grp. Capt. Ewang Sam Ewang (rtd) as chairman; Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly (Senate) Matters Ita Enang (director-general); Chairman of the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC) Abom Tony Esu (deputy director-general); Senator Godswill Akpabio (chief adviser) and a former governorship aspirant, John Udoedehe (deputy chief adviser).

Ewang promised that Ekere would perform as governor, stressing he was ready to be held responsible for that.

According to him, he accepted the assignment upon the conviction that APC was heading for a clear win in 2019.

Akpabio said Ekere’s election was certain because those with God-given grace to make governors were with him.

He hinged his support for Ekere on the latter’s humility, prowess and performance in NDDC.

“Nsima Ekere, you are the next governor of Akwa Ibom State,” he said.

  • APC candidate Ekere: they shot into my bedroom

A bullet was fired into the Uyo home of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State Mr. Nsima Ekere yesterday, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) said yesterday.

Ekere said he “narrowly escaped an assassination attempt”.

Narrating how it happened, Ekere said he was meeting party leaders in the nearby residence of the Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority, Mr Umana Umana, when the bullet was fired into his upstairs bedroom where his wife and sister were at the time.

Following a distress call from his wife, Obong Ekere, accompanied by party leaders, rushed home to the scene of the incident.

The scene was subsequently cordoned off and the expended bullet taken away by security agents following the visit of Commissioner of Police Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi and some personnel from the Police and the Department of State Security (DSS).

The Police however declined to speak on the matter when contacted by our reporter.

Ekere said that the incident was disturbing coming at the beginning of the electioneering season and shortly after an attack on the residence of Senator Godswill Akpabio.

He appealed to Inspector-General of Police and the DSS Director-General to take a serious look at the security situation in the state and the attempt on his life coming shortly after Governor Udom Emmanuel recruited some notorious retired and serving security personnel who previously served in the state to form his security architecture.

Obong Ekere also condemned the destruction of some of his campaign billboards in Uyo

“We don’t understand this level of intolerance for the opposition. Democracy is about allowing people to choose who they want. I call on the federal government to cause the state government to allow democracy to thrive in Akwa Ibom State without let or hindrance,” he said.

The APC State Caucus Chairman Chief Don Etiebet described the assassination attempt on Ekere as callous, sad and untoward and called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate it.

APC Chairman Ini Okopido, said the party was shocked that “we just nominated a candidate two days ago and they came here to kill him today.”

He criticized the state government for issuing a nolle prosequi to discontinue the trial of suspected PDP thugs who were arraigned in court by the police for violently disrupting a rally by APC in Ika, his local government area.

Senator Akpabio, recalled the attack on his residence and said the assassination attempt on Ekere was a panicky measure to intimidate the APC which is heading for victory in the state.

“Now, it is very clear that this is an orchestrated attempt to intimidate the APC. When they say that APC is in opposition, I disagree. If we were in opposition before, now with the influx of Akwa Ibom people into APC in the last one and a half months, I can tell you that the APC is actually the majority party in Akwa Ibom State. What is happening is a panicky measure.’

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang said:  “we will not be threatened to back down on the decision to sweep Udom Emmanuel’s PDP Government out of Akwa Ibom State in the next election and to elect Obong Nsima Ekere as our Governor in 2019 because no matter the threats and antics, the people of Akwa Ibom State are determined.”

  • Akpabio, Ekere chosen as consensus candidates

Senator Godswill Akpabio and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Managing Director Nsima Ekere have been adopted as consensus candidates by stakeholders of All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio was picked by stakeholders of Ikot Ekpene senatorial district as sole candidate for area; Ekere was chosen as candidate for governor.

The former Senate Minority leader and NDDC MD’s adoption resulted from a midnight meeting, which lasted for four hours.

One of the top contenders for the Ikot Ekpene senatorial seat, Inibehe Okori reportedly stepped down for Akpabio at the meeting.

The two aspirants will be officially presented to the people at a later date.

Addressing party faithful after the meeting, leader of the party Otuekong Don Etiebet said the decision was reached for the good of all.

According to Etiebet, “we leaders have decided tonight that Obong Nsima Ekere be our governor in 2019. We have also decided to endorse Godwill Akpabio to represent Ikot Ekpene senatorial district.

“After individual experimentation, we have decided to work to take the  decision for the common good of the people of Akwa Ibom State.

“We are going to work for our collective interest, we recognised the importance of contributory arrangements that between us the leaders, all of us are known in the country and that if we go to Abuja, we can get something working together”.

State party Chairman Ini Okopido expressed satisfaction that the leaders were able to bring out amicable resolutions binding all parties.

“I thank God that we have arrived at definite decisions one of which is to support Obong Nisma Ekere, for the governorship position of the state, support Godswill Akpabio, because when the national leaders our party came here they respected him and we have decided to respect so that he would not be like the proverbial prophet who is not respected in his home town” Okopido stated.
