    Ekiti APC urges senator’s release

THE Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the release of Senator Ayo Arise from his abductors’ den.

The senator was seized on Sunday evening on Lokoja-Abuja road.

In a statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, APC Deputy Chairman, Mrs. Kemisola Olaleye, urged the family of the politician and Oye Ekiti community to remain calm and be prayerful for his safe release.

Arise is an APC leader and one of the party’s governorship aspirants in Ekiti State.

Mrs. Olaleye urged the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in charge of Zone 8, comprising Ekiti and Kogi commands, to work with other security agencies to ensure a safe and immediate release of the senator.

She also advised party members in Ekiti State to pray for Arise’s safe return.

‘Ekiti APC ’ll field best candidate‘

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has promised to organise a primary  that will produce the best governorship candidate for next year’s poll.

The APC Deputy Chairman, Mrs. Kemisola Olaleye, made the promise in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, at an empowerment programme sponsored by a governorship aspirant, Prince Olatunji Tosin Olofinluyi, for 100 beneficiaries from the 16 local government areas.

The beneficiaries included artisans, the unemployed and the aged people. The aspirant described the APC as the party that can change Ekiti for good.

Olofinluyi hails from Are-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, Ekiti Central Senatorial District. The monarch of his hometown, the Alare of Are-Ekiti, Oba Jacob Boluwade Adebiyi, was among the dignitaries present at the  programme.

Olaleye advised all the aspirants seeking the party’s nomination to work harder and solicit the support of delegates in 177 wards ahead of the primary, saying that the party’s ticket is for the best aspirant.

She promised a level-playing field for all aspirants, urging them to work hard by going into the wards to canvass for votes.

Olaleye pleaded with the beneficiaries not to betray the aspirant when he needs their support.

She said: “We have many aspirants from our party and I have always maintained that it is your work that will speak for you and not who you know. You must work harder and campaign in all the 177 wards in the state.

“APC is the answer to the pain people are experiencing under Governor Fayose led PDP government. We must liberate our people from the misrule in 2018.”

Various items were distributed at occasion including Sewing machines, clippers, mechanical equipment, tools for carpenters, bricklayers among others.

Cash distributed included N10,000 for 20 elderly people, N20,000 for 10 farmers as well as N50,000 for 10 market women.

Olofinluyi said that the decision to help the poor people in Ekiti was not for partisan reasons, noting that the greatest problem confronting the state is poverty.

He said: “My friends and I have looked at the state of affairs in Ekiti and we come to the conclusion that the greatest problem facing the people is poverty and unemployment.

“Our people are people of integrity, therefore, our youths and the elderly must not suffer. This is why we embarked on this empowerment.

Let me assure you that there is more to come, those who did not benefit from this, should exercise patience, “he said.

  • Ekiti APC ‘okays’ 25 for governor

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has said it recognises 25 aspirants, who have shown interest in next year’s governorship race.

State Women Leader Mrs. Dupe Bakare spoke yesterday when she led the women caucus to receive wife of one of the aspirants, Mrs. Modupe Adebomi, at the party’s secretariat in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

She said the 25 officially notified the party of their intent to run, though 50 were reported.

Mrs. Adebomi was promoting the governorship aspiration of her husband, Captain Sunday Adebomi, who she said will put women empowerment as a core agenda.

Mrs. Bakare said five wives of the aspirants, including Mrs. Adebomi, visited the secretariat to interact with women leaders in the three senatorial districts and 16 councils.

The women leader expressed satisfaction at the number and quality of aspirants.

Mrs. Adebomi promised that her husband would give 40 per cent of offices to women, in recognition of their importance in the political process.

She said: “Women are home builders, nation builders and important stakeholders in the political process. Women will occupy a pride of place in my husband’s administration.

“Sunday Adebomi is truthful, he will deliver. He does not see politics as a lottery. I am seeking the support of APC women for his aspiration to make Ekiti better.

“I know him to be a decent, trustworthy, dependable and compassionate politician who is running for the governorship seat to better the lots of our people.”

  • Ekiti APC elders endorse zoning

    Ekiti APC elders endorse zoning

The Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders’ Forum has thrown its weight behind governorship zoning to Ekiti South to ensure equity, justice and fair play among the three senatorial districts.

This formed the kernel of a forum organized by a group, Itesiwaju Ekiti, a political platform of a former member of the House of Representatives and a governorship aspirant, Hon. Bamidele Faparusi, in Ode-Ekiti, headquarters of Gbonyin Local Government Area.

Members of the group had an interface with the APC elders where they canvassed the need to support Ekiti South’s desire to produce the next governor, for the first time in the history of the state since it was created, almost 21 years ago.

The forum led Chief George Akosile, at the meeting said the demand by Ekiti South to win the governorship seat was a legitimate one which should be supported by all.

Faparusi said the step taken by the elders was commendable, adding that such would help in stabilizing the APC ahead of the poll.

“This action is commendable. Our party needs elders who can speak the truth not minding whose ox is gored.

“If you check the political trajectory since 1999, the Ekiti South has not produced the governor. The duo of Otunba Niyi Adebayo and Governor Ayodele Fayose are from the Central. Former Governors Kayode Fayemi and Segun Oni are from the North. So, it is only fair to give the South a chance in 2018.

“This situation happened in Anambra State before 2013. The Anambra North was not allowed to produce the governor but when elders of that state met, they pleaded and the present governor, Chief Willie Obiano was given the chance.

“In any pluralistic society like Nigeria, ethnicity, religion and territorial location played prominent role in determining leadership positions, particularly the one that is as high as governorship.

“The agitation from the South was only normal and it will be political wise for the National Working Committee to listen to this voice of reasoning, so that winning the election can be easier”, he said.

Another prominent member of Itesiwaju Ekiti and former Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon Churchill Adedipe, urged the APC “to see zoning as a critical weapon that can be deployed to defeat the PDP in 2018.”

  • ‘How to avert post-primary crisis in Ekiti APC’

‘How to avert post-primary crisis in Ekiti APC’

Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Hon. Bimbo Daramola has urged the party leadership to conduct a credible primary to avert post-primary crisis.

He said a truly democratic and free and fair shadow poll will prevent a rancorous primary and safe the party from disaster during the governorship election.

Daramola, a former member of the House of Representatives, said the large number of contenders is worrisome, saying that the party should have set out some rules to prevent unserious aspirants.

Warning that the huge number may bring trouble, he lamented that aspirants are building personal structures, instead of collectively building the party.

On post-primary crisis, he said: “Take it from me, it is inevitable. It is already too late. We are six months late. There is no way. Only one candidate will emerge. Since there are no rules, anybody can just come out to declare. Some people have come before me, moving about, spending money. Some people have come after me.”

Daramola added: “Between February 2016 and now, I have gone to the 16 local governments, more than 100 towns. Multiply that with one million naira. It is inconsiderable that I will go to Ekiti with one million naira. Multiply the one hundred times I have gone to Ekiti with one million naira, that’s what has gone into the race. The party should conduct a fair primary. Now, their own supporters will say, we have been following you for so long. We can’t agree with the outcome of the primary, when they are defeated.

“It is very difficult. If we have set up an in-house cleansing, the number of aspirants will not be huge. There should have been parameters to guide us. I wrote to seek an audience with the national chairman. There is no response. I genuinely love my state. I genuinely love my party. I have put my life on the line severally for the party. I don’t want Ekiti State to go back. I don’t want to see the consolidation of what we see today in Ekiti. I believe our party can steer Ekiti out of this doldrums. But, we need to get it right.

Daramola said the APC can only dislodge the PDP, if it puts its house in order and promote cohesion.

He said Governor Ayodele Fayose’s PDP has started mobilization, ahead of the poll at a time the APC aspirants appeared to be working at cross-purposes.

The former legislator said: “ The guy in government is consolidating every week. He is meeting with all kinds of groups; artisans, okara riders. He is serving them his political diet. People continue to salivate, eating and enjoying it. At what time are we going to start feeding them with a different meal.

“If we have a rancorous primary like they had in 2007, when 13 or 14 of the candidates pulled out in one day, and teamed behind Olusegun Oni, who came third in the PDP primary, I leave that to the leadership. I defer to them. Forty people at the primary; it will be unmanageable. Are we going to have 40 boxes or one box with 40 party agents, with over 2,040 delegates with the statutory ones? Look at Anambra. Anambra have less. Look at Ondo. Ondo had less. We have 40 in Ekiti. How do you manage that? It is going to test the wit of our leaders. I hope it will not lead to the extent that the falcon will not be able to bear with the falconer.”

  • Ekiti APC threatens legal action over Paris Club cash

The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has threatened to take legal action and embark on protests if the Ayodele Fayose administration misapplies the N9.6 billion Paris Club refund.

The party said it was aware of the governor’s alleged move to launch “a fresh wave of brainwashing sessions among workers and traditional rulers to distort facts on the Paris Club cash in order to short-change Ekiti people again”.

It faulted Fayose’s claim that the state’s share of the money was N4 billion after debts and local government deductions.

APC insisted that under the Paris Club refund protocol, the cash released to the state was neither subject to debts nor local government deductions because it is a special fund meant for the payment of salaries.

In a statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, APC said it will be on the side of the people and will disallow fraud, selfishness, greed and wickedness to continue to the advantage of one man while Ekiti people suffer as a responsible opposition party.

The statement said: “We are aware that after our great party, the APC, yesterday (Monday) educated Ekiti people and workers in particular about the details and truth about the N9.5 billion Paris Club refund to Ekiti State, Governor Fayose has begun a fresh and more aggressive propaganda to have his way to selfishly misapply the money.

  • Ekiti APC attacks NBA, Fayose over stand on DSS raid

Ekiti APC attacks NBA, Fayose over stand on DSS raid

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has accused Governor Ayo Fayose of inciting the people against the Department of State Services (DSS) over its raid on the homes of judges suspected of being corrupt.

The party took exception to Fayose’s action of using a live broadcast to accuse the DSS of “illegality, impunity and attack on the rule of law” saying the governor’ position followed the same pattern of his criticism of other anti-graft agencies anytime he feels threatened by their activities.

The APC, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, explained that contrary to Fayose posturing as fighting for the rule of law, the governor is actually fighting for his own survival “as it is most  likely he has something he is hiding that we do not know”.

The party also criticised the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) for condemning DSS, explaining that NBA’s action is condemnable against the backdrop of its silence when the judiciary faced a more daring and contemptuous challenge to the authority of the courts by private individuals, notably Fayose when he allegedly led thugs to attack the court in Ado-Ekiti.

The APC spokesman also accused Governor Nyesom Wike of obstructing DSS from carrying out their  duty, saying it is clear a case of obstructing the course of justice.

DSS had at the weekend obtained a Magistrate Court search warrant to conduct sting operations on some judges suspected of corruption in the discharge of their duties in election matters.

Olatunbosun noted that Fayose is always edgy when issues of corruption and how to deal with them by the agencies of government are on the table.

He said: “Fayose’s attempt to set Ekiti people against DSS through inflammatory statements in a live broadcast on the state media to again instigate the people against security agencies will not save him from facing justice in his numerous brushes against the law.

“He is always agitated whenever there is any move against corruption, which can be seen in his latest condemnation of the DSS raid on Judges’ residences, and this follows his pattern of crying wolf where there is none.”

He added: “The same man talking about the rule of law once invaded the State High Court in Ado-Ekiti with thugs to beat up a judge, break courtroom windows, tear court records and beat the Chief Judge’s secretary.

“It is an irony for a serial law breaker to suddenly become a defender and protector of the law after he once caused the courts in Ekiti State to be put under lock and key for months  so that his eligibility matter could not be heard.

“We wish to ask the NBA why they didn’t condemn that invasion of the courts and beating up of a judge in Ekiti in September 2014 but suddenly found its voice now that the judiciary is in the process of being sanitized.

“We are disappointed in the NBA for not condemning Governor Nyesom Wike for obstructing the cause of justice by preventing law enforcement agents from carrying out their duty. “We also wonder why the affected judge didn’t call his brother judge instead of calling Governor Wike?“

  • Ekiti APC back to drawing board

Ekiti APC back to drawing board

A year and ten months to the next governorship election in Ekiti State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is  warming for the poll. Aspirants are already struggling for the party’s ticket. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA unveils the contenders and highlights the hurdles the opposition party must cross to regain power.

Ekiti  State All Progressives Congress (APC) is back to the drawing board. Its chieftains are already strategising for the next governorship election. The poll is almost two years away, but aspirants have started mobilising and drawing support for their ambition. Will the party regain power in 2018?

While no aspirant has emerged in the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) due to the fact that Governor Ayo Fayose is just a month away from celebrating his second year in office and not favorably disposed to any succession battle, the same cannot be said of the APC.

In the opposition party, many chieftains are eyeing the ticket. They believe that power will shift to the opposition at the poll. In fact, aggrieved PDP chieftains have been defecting to the APC. So far, there has not been any defection from the APC to the ruling party.

The APC is at an advantage. It is perceived as a party of choice by those who are seeking an alternative to the PDP government. But, it is at a disadvantage because at the state level, it lacks the power of incumbency. But, according to chieftains of the party, the fact that the APC is not in power means that there is no governor who will anoint a successor. The implication is that there will be a level playing ground for aspirants.

Although only one aspirant has publicly declared his intention, others are involved in underground moves, meetings, and consultations. They are setting up campaign structures across the 16 local governments.

Top on the list of aspirants is the former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Olufemi Bamisile. He has been on the field since last year when Fayose was just settling down for his second term.

Some party leaders have criticised the former legislator for starting early, saying that the bravado was unnecessary at that stage. They thought that the party had not recovered from the shock of the 2014 governorship defeat. But, some chieftains applauded the ex-Speaker for coming out early, saying that his activities have won more souls for the platform.

Bamisile has set up a campaign office beside the state secretariat of the PDP to show the people that he was serious about his ambition.

Besides, Bamisile has also organised empowerment programmes, including the distribution of free petrol to commercial motorcyclists. He has embarked on ward-to-ward visits to party members to sell his agenda to the grassroots.  To party members, Bamishile is a serious contender.

Other aspirants have been reaching out to the people through the media. For example, some of them are sponsoring jingles and other  programmes on the Radio Nigeria Progress 100.5 FM, Ado Ekiti and ADABA 88.9 FM Akure They often participate in radio programmes to draw attention to their ambition and drum support for the party.  Some of them used the platforms to discuss burning issues affecting Ekiti.

The aspirants include the former Chairman of Ekiti State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Adebayo Orire; former House of Representatives members, Hon. Bimbo Daramola, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele and Hon. Bamidele Faparusi; Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Femi Ojudu and former Senate Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Gbenga Aluko.

Others are the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) governorship candidate in 2007, Otunba Yinka Akerele; former Executive Secretary of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Dr. Femi Thomas; former Chief of Staff, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu; former House of Assembly Majority Leader, Hon. Funminiyi Afuye; Australia-based medical practitioner, Dr. Wole Oluyede and former House of Assembly member, Hon. Bayo Idowu.

Others include former Commissioners, Chief Sesan Fatoba, Chief Bisi Aloba, Chief Dele Okeya; former Special Assistant to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Domestic Affairs, Mr. Bodunde Adeyanju; former Ekiti South senatorial aspirant, Mr. Kayode Adaramodu; an investor, Mr. Olajide Akinyemi Jnr, an officer in the United States Army, Captain Sunday Adebomi; former Special Assistant on Forestry, Mr. Bayo Babalotin, Mr. Muyiwa Olumilua and Mr. Oladipupo Ogunkoyode.

Many aides and supporters of two former governors, Chief Segun Oni and Dr. Kayode Fayemi are also believed to be promoting their ambition, but the duo are said to be concentrating on the current positions they are holding at the national level.

While Oni is the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, Fayemi is the Minister of Mines and Steel Development. But, the game of politics is unpredictable, hence, they cannot be ruled out of the race despite their “loud silence.”

The two former governors are from Ekiti North Senatorial District.

The majority of the aspirants are from Ekiti South District, which had not produced an elected governor since 1999 while the rest are  from the North or South districts.

Aspirants from the South are Bamisile, Faparusi, Aluko, the two Adaramodus, Afuye, Idowu, Fatoba, Aloba, Oluyede, Adebomi, Babalotin and Ogunkoyode.

From the Central are Orire, Bamidele, Ojudu, Thomas and Adeyanju while contenders from the North include Daramola, Akerele and Akinyemi Jnr.

As the poll draws near, more chieftains  are expected to show interest in the  race.

It is too early to predict which senatorial district will emerge as the beneficiary of zoning. But, zoning is a contentious issue in the APC and in the entire state. Zoning is not in the APC constitution, but the concentration of aspirants from the South indicates the desire of members from the zone to clinch the ticket.

Zoning has never determined the succession pattern in Ekiti. Voters always prefer to vote for acceptable candidates, irrespective of where they come from. For instance, first civilian governor, Adebayo, who won the poll on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in 1999 hails from Ekiti Central. In 2003, Fayose, who is also from the same senatorial district with Adebayo, was elected on the platform of PDP.

In the 2014 poll, there was the clamour for zoning to Ekiti South in the PDP. But, Fayose who hails from Ekiti Central won the primary and the election in controversial circumstances.

It is being rumored that Fayose may anoint a successor from Ekiti Central, particularly from Ado Ekiti.

Sources said the governor has his eyes on Ado bloc votes because the state capital has a numerical strength and the highest number of voters. This is similar to the calculation of Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who has anoited a successor from Akure, the state capital.

The APC dream of reclaiming the State House will prove to be a Herculean task as the party has to redouble its effort and do more than propaganda, issuing of press statements and complacency, borne out of the feeling of being the ruling party at the federal level.

Although majority of the civil servants and teachers who form the bulk of voters are aggrieved with Fayose over some policies they perceive as anti-people, the governor is trying to win back their affection.

The policies include the payment of deductions from their salaries and  the review of their backlog of promotions and the biometric registration of intending beneficiaries of social security scheme.

The PDP is strong at the grassroots. It has elected councilors and chairmen across the local governments, commissioners, special advisers, special assistants, board chairmen and members at the state level.

The party also produced all the 26 members of the House of Assembly,  six members of the House of Representatives and three senators. The services of all these officials will be needed during the poll.

Despite his face-off with the APC-led-Federal Government, Fayose is still regarded as a grassroots politician who possess the magic wang. He is perceived as a populist politician who can always win the hearts of the grassroots “since every politics is local.”

The APC has many challenges. Many chieftains have been appealing to the national leadership to pay attention to these probles because their resolution is critical to success in future elections.

Many members of the party are still aggrieved that genuine reconciliation is yet to take place less than two years to another election. Ekiti APC is a divided house.

A chieftain from Ikole Local Government Area, Chief John Filani, said the party needed “urgent reorganisation” to be an election-winning platform.

He expressed fear that, unless the national leaders intervene and put things in order, the party may lose the governorship election to the PDP.

He also advised party leaders to consider fielding a “home-based candidate” during the election, saying  members are yearning for a candidate who is accessible and ready to listen to them.

Speaking with reporters in Ado Ekiti, Filani lamented that Ekiti APC could be likened to a “flock of sheep without a shepherd” as key leaders and those holding party positions and political offices at the national level have abandoned the party to its fate.

He urged the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and other well-meaning leaders to reposition chapter.

Filani called on Adebayo, Oni and Fayemi to come together and convoke a “solemn assembly” that will enable members to resolve their differences.

He said the alleged “siddon look attitude” of these leaders must stop, urging them to come home and interact with party members, ahead of the poll.

Filani said: “An average member of the APC in Ekiti State is not happy with way the party is being run. The state exco has disconnected itself from the masses; we need to do more work if we want APC to regain power in   Ekiti in 2018.

“Going by the present situation of our party, if the APC is not careful, the PDP may win again in 2018. We have 177 wards in the state and  hardly can we boast that our members are happy in 160 out of the 177 wards.

“At the moment, the PDP has more members in the grassroots than the APC in Ekiti and if election is held today, 16-0 may repeat itself because the exco members are not making party members happy.

“The APC leaders in the state are very selfish and they are pursuing personal interests and that is why I am scared that, unless we put our house in order, we may lose the governorship election again in 2018.”

“The reality is that PDP members are more than us and we claim that we are the party at the centre but there is no reflection at home. The party is not on ground contrary to what they are making our leaders up there to believe.

“We want the National Chairman, Chief Odigie-Oyegun, National Leader Asiwaju Tinubu to hear this: Ekiti chapter needs their intervention and majority of our members in the grassroots are aggrieved, they are not happy with the way the party is being run and there must be genuine reconciliation.”

Filani explained that preparations for the next governorship election must start now if the party hopes to win the governorship seat. He said 2018 is very much around the corner hence the party must get it right.

He warned against imposition of candidate in the next set of election advocating what he called a “home-based candidate” as the flag bearer in the next gubernatorial poll.

Filani added: “We need a home-based candidate for the next governorship election and there should be no imposition. Party members must be allowed to vote for the candidates of their choice.

“We want a home-based candidate,  a home-grown governorship candidate. That is what Ekiti people want now; if you come with millions of pounds from outside few weeks to the primary and you hope to win, Ekiti people will reject you.

“The truth is bitter, we must say it so that our party will regain power and Ekiti people will enjoy good governance they are being denied by the ruling PDP administration.”

Another party member who craved anonymity said the APC has a bright chance of winning the governorship election in 2018 because “Fayose is no longer popular for allegedly imposing hardship on Ekiti people and revelations of mind-boggling corruption” adding that the party must put its house in order.

He said: “We have a bright chance of winning the next governorship election with Fayose’s popularity now at an all-time low and the mind-boggling corruption revelations but preparation must start now. It is good that many party members are showing interest in our governorship ticket but it is more than that.

“We should stop deceiving ourselves and tell ourselves the home truth because displacing an incumbent governor and ruling party from power needs much hard work, unity of purpose and winning more members into the party.

“What are the contributions of these people to the growth of the party? Some of them had not stepped into the party secretaries and they want the ticket of that party. The party presently lacks many things, it is difficult paying salaries of the secretariat staff.

“It has been a long time since we held an all-inclusive meeting. Members are loyal to the aspirants they are promoting rather than to the party and this is not good for a party looking ahead to an election.

“Those saying they want to be governor, the question we are asking is that where are they? We don’t known many of these personalities in the party and they want to be governor over us.

“They don’t come to the party secretariat, we don’t see them often and those holding federal appointments are far away from the grassroots. If you need a party platform to contest, you must strengthen the platform and make it attractive to the electorate.

“We must face the fact, our party only exists on pages of newspapers and much still needs to be done to make it an election-winning party. Remember, Ekiti is a local place and every politics is local.

“Many members are still aggrieved and there has never been a time we sat together and ruminate on why we lost the 2014 governorship election to prevent a repeat in the future.

“All these things must be done before we can dream about winning any election. Genuine reconciliation is needed, there must be aggressive membership and mobilization drive at the grassroots.

“We much work to do before the 2018 governorship contest because power is not served a la carte as our national leader use to say.”

Ekiti APC hails Buhari over Ojudu’s appointment

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for the appointment of Senator Babafemi Ojudu as Special Adviser on Political Matters.
Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said in a statement that the appointment reinforced the importance of Ekiti State in the nurturing of the party for the challenges ahead.
The party congratulated Ojudu for his appointment, saying it is a challenge for the former senator to contribute his quota to the growth and development of the party in the state while also using his position to make impact at the national level.
The party also congratulated members of APC in the state for the appointment, stressing that it was a development that would make them have a sense of belonging, as the appointment was for a collective benefit of all.

    • Accuses Fayose of committing another ‘illegality’

The Ekiti State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has kicked against the appointment of former General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Dele Adesina (SAN), as member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The party said the appointment has added to an alleged “long list of illegalities and constitutional breaches” committed by Governor Ayo Fayose since assuming office on October 16, 2014.

APC Publicity Secretary Taiwo Olatunbosun said in a statement yesterday that Adesina’s appointment was a violation of the constitution, which stated that “no person can be appointed into the Judicial Service Commission twice”.

“Adesina was first appointed as a member of the Judicial Service Commission by Governor Kayode Fayemi in 2012, and against the law, he was again appointed by Governor Fayose as the Chairman of the commission in 2015,” Olatunbosun explained.

“By the provision of Section 200(3) of the 1999 Constitution, no person can be appointed to State Civil Service Commission, Judicial Service Commission or State Independent Electoral Commission twice.

“ Adesina (SAN) was appointed by Fayemi to serve in the State Judicial Service Commission, now Fayose has re-appointed him to the same office.

“This is illegal and unconstitutional. This provision of the law is an offshoot of Sections 197,198 and 199 of the 1999 Constitution.”

He added that by this action, Fayose had breached the constitution for the umpteenth time.

“It is unfortunate and regrettable that a senior advocate of Adesina’s stature could allow temporary allure of office to take precedence over professionalism and defence of the provisions of the constitution, his very constituency from where he made money and earned his fame,” he said.
