Egbeyemi, a former Attorney- General/Commissioner for Justice in the state, said efficient administration of justice would also aid investment and economic growth.

  • Ekiti dep gov seeks return of soldiers to checkpoints

Deputy Governor of Ekiti Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi has canvassed return of soldiers to checkpoints across the nation.

Egbeyemi noted the wave of kidnapping in Ekiti has increased after the withdrawal of military personnel from checkpoints across the state.

In a statement on Sunday by his Special Assistant (Media), Odunayo Ogunmola, the deputy governor called on the military to look for more alternative means of preventing men of the underworld from perpetrating their nefarious criminal activities

Egbeyemi spoke at a church service to mark this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the Government House Chapel, Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

He reacted to remarks of the Brigade Commander of the Nigerian Army 323 Artillery Regiment, Akure, Brig.-Gen. James Ataguba, that “the soldiers were withdrawn from checkpoints to more fluid areas to enable them respond swiftly to any case of insecurity reported to them.”

Egbeyemi said: “the General was saying they removed them (armies) from the road, we know the impact of removing them from the road.

“I pray that you have a better alternative. Immediately you removed your men from the road the kidnappers started operating.

  • Ekiti deputy governor honoured by hometown

The people of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, recently rolled out the drums to celebrate the ascension of an illustrious son, Otunba Adebisi Adegboyega Egbeyemi, to the coveted position of Deputy Governor.

They came from within and outside the state to rejoice with Egbeyemi, whom they acknowledged contributed positively to their lives for many decades before Providence lifted him to the office of the state’s Deputy Governor.

Many of the well-wishers had one reason or the other for leaving their tight schedules in order to honour Egbeyemi with their presence at the thanksgiving and civic reception to celebrate his assumption of office.

To some, the deputy governor deserved to be honoured for his selflessness in handling legal cases for them free when they had no money to pay the professional fees.

Others, who were his students in his earlier career as a physical and health education teacher said Egbeyemi helped in moulding their career path which had seen them become somebody in life.

Another group of Egbeyemi’s beneficiaries attested to the fact that he assisted them to get employment as a political office holder in the course of his long political career.

Egbeyemi was member of the Old Ondo State House of Assembly in 1983 and also served as Chairman, Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area between 1991 and 1993.

He later won election as a member of the House of Representatives but the result was cancelled by the former Head of State, the late Gen. Sani Abacha, which denied him the opportunity to represent his constituency.

Egbeyemi served as Commissioner for Education in the administration of Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo from 1999 to 2002, member, Governing Council, National Teachers’ Institute, from 2001 to 2002 and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekiti State, between 2002 and 2003.

He also served as member representing Ekiti State on the Board of Odu’a Investment Limited, among other positions of responsibility which he used to positively touch the lives of the people he came in contact with.

Throng of well-wishers trooped en masse to Egbeyemi’s residence in Government Reservation Area (GRA) where old and young, high and low felicitated with the politician whom they noted was reaping from the benevolence extended to many in the pursuit of his careers as a teacher, lawyer, businessman and politician.

Clad in resplendent commemorative Ankara fabrics, they thronged the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel (Anglican Communion), Okesa, Ado-Ekiti, where a special thanksgiving service was held in his honour.

A special civic reception was also held in honour of Egbeyemi at the Great Eagle Event Centre, Ikere Road, Ajebamidele.

In the run-up to the July 14 governorship election, Egbeyemi emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, among many other candidates considered for the position.

His choice was arrived at by the then governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, in onsonance with party elders, who considered his loyalty, contributions to the party and development of the state, among others.

Egbeyemi’s tentacles spread from legal profession, to politics, Christendom and community development as he is a traditional chief in his hometown, Ado-Ekiti.

All these indices worked in his favour to emerge as the running mate on the joint APC ticket with Fayemi which was elected at the July 14 polls.

The service was attended by the wife of the governor, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi; wife of the deputy governor, Mrs. Margaret Egbeyemi; Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Adeniran Alagbada; his wife, Mrs. Kike; former deputy governor, Prof. Dupe Adelabu; Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji; Chief of Staff, Mr. Biodun Omoleye; Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe and other traditional rulers.

Fayemi, who did not appear at the church service, having been engaged elsewhere, showed up at the venue of the reception.

At the thanksgiving service, Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, the Rt. Rev. Christopher Omotunde, congratulated Egbeyemi on his election alongside his boss, Fayemi, to pilot the affairs of the state.

The cleric warned the APC administration not to disappoint the teeming masses looking up to it for good governance.

The Bishop, who described himself as “a father of all politicians” because all members of his church are in all political parties, said it behoves on him to speak the truth when the need arises.

Omotunde said God has given Governor Fayemi another chance to make the difference in the lives of Ekiti people and must not fail to do that because “the expectations are very high.”

While likening Fayemi to the biblical Nehemiah, Omotunde said President Muhammadu Buhari had so much trust in the governor (Fayemi) by releasing him from the federal cabinet to repair Ekiti allegedly damaged by bad governance.

Omotunde said now that Fayemi’s party, APC, is in power at the federal level unlike what obtained during his first tenure; the Federal Government must grant all the requests of the governor to repair Ekiti and assist the state financially for its people to be relieved.

“Your party (APC) is in power now, let them know that I said, it’s a government of another chance and God will try you again and see whether you will be faithful or not. It is left for you to prove yourself.

Omotunde, who counselled Fayemi to pay critical attention to the deplorable state of roads, insecurity especially kidnapping and need to prioritise the people’s welfare, expressed confidence in Fayemi’s ability to deliver the dividends of good governance to the people of Ekiti State.

The Bishop further urged Fayemi to prevent the state from being taken over by herdsmen and ensure security of lives and property.

He advised the governor to be vigilant against sycophants lobbying to occupy political positions. “Look for people that will be faithful to you. Be ready to take to correction and don’t scare good people away from you. Be careful of people that will always say good things about you but will not see anything bad,” he said.

The inside story from Team Moremi

    The driver

    Karim Rasaq

Rasaq, an indigene of Osogbo, Osun State, became the late Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka’s driver in 2008. The pair hit it off.

He said: “She brought me to Ekiti. I am an Osogbo person. She never took me as a driver. I would eat and drink with her. I have been with her since January 2009. She never fought me on anything. Actually, I joined her in 2008. She then just recently retired from the bank. She never told me she was a politician. There is no pride about her. She would tell people about me ‘that is my brother who drives me’. She used to say she liked me because I never stole from her.

    The cook

    Bosede Adeyeye

A cook in her official residence in Ado Ekiti, Bosede Adeyeye, did not get to know the late Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka until she became the deputy governor in October 2010.

She found her a loving personality.

She said: “Mama Funmilayo was exceptional. She would pity you. If you had any problem, don’t tell her because that would become hers immediately. She was always satisfied with whatever we cooked here. She would make you feel good as a cook. She would always come with gifts for us anytime she travelled out. She was always having soothing words for us as well. She would say ‘I would be there when your children are marrying’. She knew how to hug and make people really loved.”

    The Personal Asst.

    Adeteju Okuyiga

Mrs. Okuyiga knew the late Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka for years.

She said the late deputy governor knew her when she was still wearing diapers. They shared the good times and the bad ones. She was with her at work and while the illness held her down.

According to her, she learnt a lot of lessons from the deceased, especially that loyalty has rewards.

Mrs. Okuyiga said: “Iya was open to everybody. The way I would talk about her is the same way the driver, the gardener, launderer, any other associate would talk about her. We were just sisters before I became her PA. She knew me from my diapers. She was a workaholic. She would send messages anytime of the day and expect a reply immediately. She was a perfectionist par excellence. She would work and work and work. She was firm, truthful, bold, courageous, a thoroughbred disciplinarian but soothing and loving. She would crack jokes with anybody. She taught me the virtue of loyalty, saying it has rewards. She hated incompetence, indolence, lying, malingering and laziness. She was courageous in a way I find most inspiring. She fought the ailment till she could fight no more. Despite being in pains, she was the one consoling the sympathisers.”

    The Special Asst.

    Lekan Fadeyi

Their relationship predated his years as her Special Assistant, Media and Communcations.

He worked with her at the United Bank for Africa (UBA).

It was from her he learnt that it was possible for someone to occupy a high position and still be humble.

According to him, she believed in repaying good deeds done to her.

Fadeyi said: “She was a mother, confidant, trainer and lover of God and humanity. This was a woman who would take delight in your family and your growth as an individual. I never had any reason to oppose her on any issue. There were cases when she summoned me to her office and whenever I explained things to her, she listened and allowed me to be. She did not know how to keep malice. Somebody just told me this afternoon (yesterday) that whenever the deputy rebuked him, she would make him realise why she rebuked him. The overall purpose was to develop you. Mrs. Olayinka never called me by my official designation. One day she sent for me, and the person called me Lekan. When I showed up, the person fidgeted, realising I was the one.

“When she invited me to come and work with her at UBA, I never realised until that time that a person could occupy such a high position and still be humble. She never let off airs. She would never forget any good thing done to her. Any good thing you did her, she would find a way of repaying you. I am sure she died a non-debtor. She was ever first to instigate favours.”

‘Ekiti Deputy Governor got the best medical care’

The remains of the late Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka, will be interred on April 26, the state government said yesterday.

The week-long activities for her state burial will begin on April 22.

According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr. Tayo Ekundayo, the funeral will be held in Ekiti and Lagos states.

Also yesterday, the Forum of Deputy Governors in Nigeria thanked the Ekiti State Government for giving the late Mrs. Olayinka the best medical treatment in Nigeria and abroad.

The representatives of the forum, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulure (Lagos) and Chief Segun Adesegun (Ogun), yesterday visited Governor Kayode Fayemi at the Government House in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The forum said it was proud of the deceased’s contributions to the success of the Fayemi administration.

It thanked the late Mrs. Olayinka’s family and the state government for supporting her throughout her illness.

Mrs. Orelope-Adefulire said: “Your government has been wonderful in taking care of her. She received the best of treatment. She was very courageous and hardworking. She lived a fulfilled life. You and your wife were very supportive to her and we cherish your good working relationship.

“We are pained as her colleagues and I am particularly pained as a woman. We have comfort in the Lord Jesus Christ that she will continue to rest in peace.”

Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara); the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr.Jonah Otunla; Senators Babafemi Ojudu (Ekiti Central), Olu Adetunmbi (Ekiti North) and Anthony Adeniyi (Ekiti South) and Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, who was represented by a delegation led by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Jallo Ibrahim, also visited Fayemi.

Amosun described the late Mrs. Olayinka as a daughter of Ogun State, having married an Egba man, Mr. Lanre Olayinka, an architect.

He said Ogun State shared the pain of her death, adding that nobody expected Mrs. Olayinka to die so soon.

Urging Fayemi to remain strong, Amosun said: “We should console ourselves that in the 52 years she spent with us, she did well. In the last six to seven years that she found herself in politics, she joined the struggle to reclaim the Action Congress of Nigeria’s (ACN’s) mandate. After the mandate was retrieved, she served the people diligently. She is our wife and we share in your grief.”

In the condolence register, Amosun wrote: “Our wife, sister, adieu. You served the good people of Ekiti State selflessly. The ACN family will surely miss your commitment. The nation will miss your charm and laughter. May the good Lord grant you eternal rest and comfort your aged parents, your husband, children and the government and people of Ekiti and Ogun states.”

Ahmed said: “It was a huge shock because she was full of life and energy, but death is an inevitable end we all have to pass through. It came at a time when we need her most, but I know God will strengthen you (Fayemi) and give you the wherewithal to manage the affairs of the state.

“We are also pained that she has aged parents. May God give them the strength to bear this loss.”

In the condolence register, Ahmed wrote: “Our dear sister, you have paid the supreme price. However, you have lived a life worthy of emulation. May God grant you eternal peace.”

Dankwambo said: “Nigeria has lost a gem, a great personality, whose services are still needed. God knows why he took her home. Death is an inevitable end and while we all mourn her, we know that death is a gain to her.”

Osun State Deputy Governor Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, in her condolence message, said: “Indeed, the news got to me as a cruel, rude and painful shock. When I visited and prayed with Mrs. Olayinka barely 24 hours before her death, there was nothing to suggest that she would be leaving the earth so soon.”
