  • Ekiti Guber: Fayemi no threat to my ambition, says Olumilua

•Promises women 40 percent cabinet slot’

All Progressive Con-gress (APC) guberna-torial aspirant, Muyiwa Olumilua has said women will be offered 40 per cent representation as members of his cabinet when elected Governor of Ekiti state.

Olumilua, son of former Governor of old Ondo State, Bamidele Olumilua disclosed this during an interview.

He spoke to journalists before picking his nomination form at the headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.

Olumilua who emphasized that he has what it takes to govern the state explained that women have the capacity often time to discharge responsibilities.

His words: “What we have scheduled now is to make 40 per cent, out of every 10 appointments, four will go to women because I strongly believe that what a man can do, a woman can do as well.” He added that, “during elections, the women do the voting more. They will stand in the sun, hold their children and ensure they vote. So at the end, why should the men take everything and give them just few handouts. Not equal but having something close to the men folks.”

Speaking of his experience, Olumilua said he has been in politics for 28 years, worked under the leadership of the former Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi as Senior Special Assistant on Project Monitoring and later Senior Special Assistant, Integration and Inter-governmental Relations and further got experience from the tutelage of his father, who was once the state governor.

He argued further that he joined politics before Fayemi, the current Minister of Mines and Steel.

“Fayemi was a sitting governor when Fayose came and defeated us. So it depends on the relationship you have with the grassroots. I have been with the grassroots; I am with them most times. Since we started our project in 2016, I have been living in Ekiti, that’s what our people want. That’s what our people like.”

Reacting to claims that his father’s reputation could galvanize his success during the poll, he noted that it would give him upper edge as he won’t have to be introduced to the

  • Ekiti guber: Group roots for Aluko

Ekiti professionals in diverse fields under the auspices of the Ekiti Solidarity Front (ESP) have thrown their weight behind the former Deputy Governor of the state, Surveyor Abiodun Aluko, in the July 14 gubernatorial election.

They also called on the Mega Party of Nigeria, his party, to consider him for the slot as “he is a man of credibility”.

The group’s position was made known in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by its chairman, Prince Yemi Adekunle, while speaking with journalists.

He stated that with the entrance of Surveyor Aluko into the race, “the group feels it is time to make its position known to the world and support him to ensure he is favourably considered for the ticket by his party.”

Prince Adekunle further said: “Our group is not a political platform. We are only concerned about happenings in the state politically as actions or otherwise of political actors affect all and henceforth, we will all support credible candidates for all elective offices unlike in the past when we just watched, while the fountain of knowledge state experienced challenges”.

  • Ekiti guber: Students reject Fayose’s deputy

The Federation of Ekiti State Students Union (FESSU) has rejected the “continuity agenda” of Governor Ayo Fayose. They denied endorsing Fayose’s deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, for the July 14 governorship election. The students also demanded the disbursement of bursary and scholarships which had been stopped since Fayose returned to power in October 2014.

Some students under the aegis of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had on Monday backed Fayose’s continuity agenda and endorsed Olusola. FESSU National President, Adewumi Peter Idowu, who addressed a briefing alongside other executives in Ado-Ekiti, said the body had not decided on who to support in the governorship poll.

Other demands of the union, according to him, are commencement of building of secretariat for the union and provision of empowerment and job opportunities for the youths. The students accused Fayose of neglecting their welfare since coming back to power in October 2014. They promised to shut down Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, at the expiration of their seven-day ultimatum, if their demands are not met.

  • Ekiti guber: No mystery about Fayose – Daramola

Ekiti guber: No mystery about Fayose – Daramola

Bimbo Daramola was a member of the green Chamber in the 7th Assembly where he was the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Daramola, who is presently an aspirant in the governorship race in his native Ekiti State, spoke with Victor Oluwasegun on a number of issues. Excepts:

WHY are  you aspiring to be the governor of Ekiti State?

This aspiration is not driven by anything but the burden of history. It is largely to defend the people and the mandate and ideals of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). It is in my nature to do what I’m doing because of the way I’m wired. You don’t just aspire. Listen, even if you’re aspiring to be a councillor, there are some things you can show for it.

We have seen the best of somebody for the past two and a half years and it doesn’t seem as if it will get any better. I am somebody that do things after weighing the options. Before I make critical decisions, I first and foremost, check what my motivation is. If my motivation is right, then I am comfortable with moving forward with the decision.

When I lost my bid to return to the House of Representatives and also riding on the fact that we lost Dr. (Kayode) Fayemi’s election of which, I was the Director-General of his campaign, I was very humbled. I thought to myself, that I had to return to the private sector and earn an honest living. I began to watch the political scene, because I knew that no matter how evil lasts, it will become apparent.

You ran a governorship campaign as a DG and failed. Now it’s just as if you’re campaigning for yourself. What are you going to do differently this time?

Brilliant question. What did I do wrong the last time as DG? Nothing. It was an election against a system. How do you conduct an election where you have so much militarization? As I speak with you now, my then 87 year old father, who is now 90, has the memories of how he was beaten black and blue in the name of election. It won’t happen this time.

The man himself by self admission  said he got so much money that it took Zenith Bank three months to count it. It was an election that President Jonathan  needed to win. Emeka Ihedioha, former Deputy Speaker called me up one of those days and said, “Bimbo, don’t overflow yourself, you’re not going to win this election.” They needed to win that election and they did everything to win.

But do you agree that your candidate lost touch with realities and the people?

I will leave the judgement of that to history. In terms of performance, I can say it today at the risk of anything that Dr. Fayemi did well  in terms of tangibilities. There may be gaps. Any human being has his or her faults. So, I believe that Dr. Fayemi did well. That’s why I have great regards for him. He said in one of his interviews,  “Ekiti is still an unfinished business.” That’s the business I want to go and finish.

I have checked my motive and my motive is that Ekiti State cannot continue with the current evil. I have the sense that we need to give ourselves the opportunity to go on the road of retrospection and we are convinced beyond reasonable doubt, be it a PDP man, APC, or Labour Party man, that what we have right now is not the best for Ekiti. So, shouldn’t we do something about the situation?

And in doing something about the situation, having seen what this man was able to do in three years, we need to bring in someone who can re-organise the system. My aspiration is not a flight of fantasy. I’m convinced that I have enough credentials to show the world that I can re-organise the system to make it work for the people of my dear state.

Some people say you are merely truing negotiate for a seat in the Senate with your guber ambition.

If I want to go to the Senate, I will tell the people I am running for the Senate. I am not doing this to be relevant politically or for personal aggrandizement nor for pecuniary reasons. I am doing this for altruistic reasons. The nobility of  my intentions are not in doubt. Go and check my background. I have twelve years of unbroken service to the progressives. It’s not a matter of pride.

Fayose has the advantage of time. He has money. I have said it elsewhere, that Governor Ayodele Peter Fayose, has political mastery working for him. But he doesn’t have political mystery. There is nothing mystical about him. Nevertheless, he has elevated the political mastery to the level that when you mention, ‘Ayo Fayose’ people are afraid. But not Bimbo Daramola. Now, it is time for us to quickly understand that we have to stand behind a candidate that doesn’t fear him.

Do you think having 46 governorship aspirants is good for the APC at a time like this?

About five months back, I wrote letter to well meaning leaders and elders of the party that there is no way 46 people will be running rings around themselves in a state of about two million people and we won’t have to deal with the backlash. Some people went to town saying the large number of aspirants is good for democracy. They said people have a constitutional right to aspire.

We should situate our rights on the reality in a state where you have a governor with a strong personality, like Fayose. I tell you, 80 percent of these aspirants are just knowing that there are 177 wards in Ekiti State. Some of them are moving around with exercise books, writing the names of wards and how to get there and even the names of personalities to meet. Some of our revered elders in the party are just being introduced to these men who

We’ll defeat APC again – PDP chieftain

The Councilor representing Ayetoro ward two in In Ido/Osi Local Government legislative Council of Ekiti State, Mr. Seun Owoola over the weekend boasted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will fail in its attempt to recapture the State in the governorship election slated for June 23rd 2018.

Speaking to News Men on Sunday during a get-together with Muslim faithful in his Ayetoro-Ekiti community to celebrate Sallah, Owoola who is the Chairman of the council’s house committee on health said the people of Ekiti will not allow what bedevilled them during the reign of immediate past Governor of the state and current Minister of Steels and Mineral Resources, Dr. Kayode Fayemi to befall them again.

He blamed the inability of the state Governor, Ayo Fayose to pay workers salaries regularly on several bank loans and N32bn bond obtained by Fayemi, stating despite the drop in allocation from Abuja to states, about N1billion is deducted monthly from Ekiti State statutory allocation for loan servicing and repayment.

“APC will not be allowed to smell Oke Bareke government House for now. Ekiti people have not recovered from their ordeal in the hands of Fayemi. The loans Fayemi took when he was Governor are largely responsible for irregular of payment of workers salary today.

“N913million is deducted monthly from the source out of our monthly allocation from federation account to service and repay the loans obtained by Fayemi from various banks and the N32bn bond he took from the capital market.

“The testimony from witnesses who had testified at the ongoing Judicial Commission of Enquiry probing how Fayemi spent some of our funds when he superintended over our patrimony is a point of reference.

“You can imagine a governor giving an oral order to a firm to supply 236 vehicles without passing through the state Tender Board? Today, N400m has been said to have been expended on the construction of new Governor’s office in Ekiti State whereas there’s no governor office anywhere.

The council chief said majority of the people of the State are solidly behind Fayose to hand over to a worthy successor, stressing that the performance of the APC led central government is another reason why the people of the state will not vote for the party candidate in 2018.

“Are you telling me we should vote for APC to compensate them for increasing a litre of petrol from N87 to N145 thereby increasing the expenditures of the common people and killing many Small and media scale enterprises? He asked rhetorically
