  • Subjects shut Ekiti monarch out of palace

Residents of Odo Ora in Ido/Osi Local Government Area, Ekiti State have locked their monarch out of palace.

The aggrieved residents faulted the procedure that produced the monarch, saying he failed to observe traditional rite, an act they claimed was antithetical to the tradition of the town.

The kingmakers and other community leaders also alleged that the monarch was not formally installed as traditional procession were circumvented.

One of the community leaders, Prof. Olawumi Ajaja, disclosed Odo Ora indigenes had nothing against the embattled monarch but the process produced him.

Ajaja, former Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, said the locals still see the monarch as an Oba-elect alleging that traditional rites were yet to be performed.

The monarch Obalemo of Odo Ora, Oba Samuel Akinola Adeyemo appealed to the State Government to save him from being deposed from the throne.

The monarch in his Save My Soul (SOS) petition forwarded to the State Government on the crisis told the Deputy Governor Bisi Egbeyemi that he had been locked out of the palace by suspected hoodlums allegedly mobiliSed by some interest groups in the community.

Egbeyemi, during a peace meeting in his office on Wednesday, condemned the violence that recently rocked the community.

According to statement by his Special Assistant (Media) to the Deputy Governor, Odunayo Ogunmola, Egbeyemi warned that the full weight of the law would be visited on individuals fomenting trouble in Odo Ora.

Egbeyemi said government had to summon the peace meeting following intelligence report from security agencies on possible outbreak of violence over the kingship crisis.

The deputy governor warned stakeholders in Odo Ora to maintain peace stressing that government won’t depose any monarch in the state.

He advised Odo Ora indigenes aggrieved with the emergence of Oba Adeyemo as the Obalemo to seek redress in the court of law.

Egbeyemi further stressed that government would not fold its arms and allow the situation to degenerate into anarchy adding that anybody caught fomenting trouble would be arrested and prosecuted.

The deputy governor urged parties in the crisis to report back in his office on February 21 for a follow-up peace parley to resolve the impasse.

  • Residents chase Ekiti monarch out of town over subject’s death

Violence rocked Ilogbo-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State yesterday as the residents chased their monarch, Oba Edward Ajayi, and members of his family out of the town.

The angry residents accused the monarch of aiding and abetting cultism.

Vehicles and other property were vandalised in the riot that erupted on Tuesday night.

The subjects said many residents were attacked by suspected cult members allegedly led by a son of the traditional ruler, Adeleye Ajayi.

They claimed that the attack by the suspected cultists led to the death of a 17-year-old boy, Bolu Adeleye, in the community.

An indigene of Ilogbo, who addressed reporters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on condition of anonymity, said the community had reported the alleged activities of the monarch’s son to his father, whom they accused of treating the matter with levity.

Another resident claimed that Adeleye was expelled from a university in Ondo State for alleged cultism about five years ago.

“The prince and his group have been terrorising our community with the shield and protection of the palace.

“The people were forced to violence because of failure of the Oba to put his child and his group under check. The death of the boy sparked the riot.

“Sacred trees usually cut when a king dies have since been cut down while the palace and Oba’s cars were vandalised.

“Seven persons, including the Oba’s son, have been arrested in connection with the incident while the body of the slain boy has been deposited at a mortuary.”

Efforts to speak with Oba Ajayi proved abortive last night. His phone was switched off.

Police spokesman Caleb Ikechukwu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

He added that the incident was still under investigation.

The violent protest continued last night at Ilogbo-Ekiti on the killing of Bolu Adeleye by suspected cultists.

The protesters marched round the town, demanding justice for the deceased.

Transportation, social and commercial activities were paralysed during the protest.

The protesters warned the police against sweeping the killing under the carpet.

They accused Adeleye Ajayi of leading the suspected cultists in the attack that led to Bolu’s death.

Seven suspects, including the monarch’s son, one of the traditional chiefs and his son have reportedly been arrested over the incident.

“And when the other chiefs arrived for the meeting with the king, the suspected lunatic was reportedly chased out of the palace with a cane and the meeting lasted.

“The late king usually walked distance, even if his official vehicle was within reach. But that day, his driver travelled out of town to service his official vehicle.

The Olufaki of Ifaki-Ekiti, Oba Gabriel Oluwole Agbaje, has called on the state government and security agencies to save his community from incessant bank robbery.

Oba Agbaje made the call on Friday while speaking with The Nation on the attack on an old generation bank by daredevil armed robbers who held the town hostage for about thirty minutes.

Social and commercial activities were at low ebb as residents gathered in groups discussing the robbery incident. The robbers arrived the bank premises at about 3.56 pm on Thursday amidst heavy shooting which sent panic round the town.

  • Ekiti monarch denies reports on shrine demolition

The Ewi of Ado-Ekiti and the Ewi-in-Council have denied reports that a shrine in front of the palace was destroyed.

They said the reports that Governor Ayo Fayose demolished the Ewi’e shrine were “absolutely false”.

A statement by the Secretary to the Ewi-in-Council and Odole of Ado-Ekiti, Chief E. B. Ogunmodimu, said the Olookori Efa, the head of the Efas (traditional Police) of Oke-Ewi, has also denied the claim.

The statement said another report that there was “pandemonium as Ekiti Residents stop Fayose from demolishing shrine, sacred trees” was not true.

It reads: “This is to formally state that both stories are false. As a matter of fact, Chief Francis Fagbuaro, the current Arowa of Ado-Ekiti, who is in charge of the deities referred to, was physically present during the said exercise.

“From the available facts on the issue, the alleged ‘pandemonium’ never took place as reported in the social media and newspapers.

“These false reports could not be far from remote relationship with the incidence of the news (video clips) that previously went viral visa a-vis the interface between the Ewi, Ewi-In-Council and Governor Fayose on the urban renewal project currently going on in the state capital.

“What actually happened before now was that the Ewi Ule Ado, Oba (DR) Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe Aladesanml III (CON, JP) only interceded on behalf of the sons and daughters of Ado-Ekiti, especially his subjects that were mostly affected by the demolition of their buildings in the course of the urban renewal project going on in Ado-Ekiti metropolis.

    •Proceedings continue today

February 23, was a day that will continue to linger in the memory of the Olukere of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Ganiyu Ayodele Obasoyin.

It was the day he breathed the air of freedom after almost two months’ incarceration. An Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court had ordered his detention for alleged murder.

The battle for his bail began on February 16 at High Court Five in Ado-Ekiti, but the ruling on his bail application was adjourned to February 23.

Odo Oja in Ikere-Ekiti, where his palace is located, has been a scene of endless protests by his supporters who allege that his incarceration was politically motivated.

Each day he appeared in court, his subjects and supporters had shown solidarity by thronging the State High Court Complex in Ado-Ekiti.

But the court session penultimate Friday was different as the crowd was absent, save for a few of his chiefs, members of his family and supporters.

They thought that the ruling on his bail application would be heard first on that day but two cases-one civil and the other criminal-were called before the ruling on the bail application was delivered.

The Olukere himself was not present in court as he was represented by his lawyers.

Justice Abiodun Adesodun, who is known to always begin his court proceedings with prayer’s to which those present respond with “amen”, called the case, paving the way for the delivery of the ruling.

This time around, Olukere, although absent from the session, had cause to smile as he was favoured by the judge, who had prayed for God’s guidance to do justice. His bail application was granted.

As the bail application received judicial stamp, news filtered into Ikere that the Olukere would soon be back home.

The two lanes of the dual carriageway which leads to Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, and Akure, the Ondo State capital, was shut down by the cheering crowd who made vehicular traffic impossible throughout the period.

Commercial motorcyclists honked their horns and performed stunts. Youths made some acrobatic displays on the road.

Some women who sighted the Olukere as his motorcade snaked through the crowd burst into tears of joy. Some of them were chanting his panegyrics known in Yoruba as oriki.

The Olukere thanked his subjects and other well-wishers for their support throughout the time he was away from the palace.

While asserting his innocence in the murder charge filed against him by the state government, Obasoyin appealed to his followers to be law-abiding as the murder case continues today.

The State High Court, earlier in the day, granted the traditional ruler bail in the sum of N5 million and two sureties in the like sum.

Justice Adesodun, in his ruling on the bail application filed by the Olukere said the application had merit and subsequently granted the defendant bail.

Apart from the N5 million bail bonds to be fulfilled by the monarch, Justice Adesodun ruled that the two sureties must swear to affidavits and produce evidence of tax clearance covering three years.

He further held that one of the sureties must produce evidence of land ownership within the jurisdiction of the court.

Olukere’s lead counsel, Mr. Morakinyo Ogele said: “This ruling is symbolic and historic; symbolic in the sense that it is in favour of justice and historic in the sense that it will enter into the judicial history of Ekiti.”

Justice Adesodun ruled that if released to credible surety, the applicant would not jump bail considering his position as an oba.

The judge said he had studied the affidavit filed by the defence and the counter-affidavit filed by the prosecution and noted that the grant or refusal of bail was predicated on some factors.

Some of the factors, according to him, included the nature and strength of evidence, severity of the punishment upon conviction, the probability that the accused will not present himself for trial and the likelihood of interfering in the case.

Justice Adesodun held that the grant or refusal of bail was at the discretion of the court but “it must be done judicially and judiciously.”

Although the monarch was not present in court on Friday, some of his chiefs, family members and supporters celebrated in hushed tones as the court rose.

Standing trial with the Olukere are Ajewole Sunday, Adetowoju Bode, Kayode Michael, Olowolafe Tola and Aluko Taiwo.

They are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy to murder, attempted murder and murder.

The Olukere was arrested and detained on December 25 last year shortly after his hotel, Arede Royal Suites located at Gbemisola area of Ikere-Ekiti, was attacked and vandalised by some individuals.

His statement during the inauguration of the hotel that Ikere was yet to get a candidate in the forthcoming governorship election was believed to have triggered the attack.

The monarch and his supporters gave the suspected hoodlums a hot chase and caught up with them at Ojumose area of Ado-Ekiti.

One of those who allegedly attacked the hotel, Kolade Adefemi, was killed during the scuffle.

The Olukere has been locked in a running battle with Governor Fayose on the non-presentation of staff of office to him and attempt by the state government to demolish the Ereja Shrine, located at the centre of Ikere.

Having gotten a reprieve and now presented with the privilege of attending court sessions from home, the onus is on the Olukere to prove his innocence.

He is also expected to provide two sureties.

Justice Abiodun Adesodun while ruling on the bail application filed by the Olukere said the application had merit and subsequently granted the defendant bail.

Apart from the N5 million bail bonds to be fulfilled by the monarch, Justice Adesodun ruled that the two sureties must swear to affidavits and produce evidence of three years tax payment.

The judge held that one of the sureties must produce evidence of land ownership within the jurisdiction of the court.

“We believe that will be done eventually in this case.”

The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kolapo Kolade, left the court before Justice Adesodun finished delivering the ruling.

Although the judge noted that the offences for which the Olukere was charged were grievous in nature, he held that the monarch was entitled to bail and resolved the request for bail in his favour.
