  • Fayemi ‘ll give Ekiti people new lease of life – Adeyeye

A former governor-ship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has said that with the coming of Dr. Kayode Fayemi as governor, Ekiti people will get a new lease of life. Adeyeye, who defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly before the June 14 Ekiti governorship election, added that he was glad that Fayemi was already working hard to clear the mess he met on ground.

Stating that the collective interests of the people will be better served under the new APC administration, Adeyeye said Fayemi possessed the required intellectual capacity and introspection required to initiate appropriate policies for the state. He listed the abolition of school fees, introduction of scholarships and revolving housing and car loans for teachers as some of the people-oriented policies that Fayemi has put in place.

Adeyeye, who was also a former spokesman for the PDP, attributed the defeat of the PDP in Ekiti State to what he described as the recklessness of former Governor Ayo Fayose. Stating why he dumped the PDP for the APC, Adeyeye, in a chat with our correspondent in Abuja at the weekend, said Fayose ran Ekiti State and PDP like his personal estates. Adeyeye said, “It became extremely impossible for patriots like myself and others to continue to endure Fayose’s high-handedness, selfishness and fascist tendencies.

“We managed to tolerate his misrule for four years, even when he personalised state resources and acted in total disregard for the PDP constitution, thereby denying majority of party members a level playing field. Fayose adopted a policy of extreme intimidation and witch hunt of everyone opposed to his jungle rule, particularly myself and party members associated with me. It got to a point that it became impossible for me to persuade my supporters to continue to endure the intimidation and oppression,” he said.

Adeyeye, who has secured the APC ticket for the Ekiti South senatorial district in the 2019 elections, said given Fayose’s excesses, there was no way the Ekiti people would have voted for his imposed governorship candidate, Prof Kolapo Olusola.

He dismissed claims by the PDP that the APC rigged the Ekiti governorship.

  • APC elders to Fayemi: give Ekiti people good governance

    •Afenifere greets governor-elect
    •Election observer group okays victory
•Ekiti in Diaspora urges Fayemi to unite state

The Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders’ Forum has urged Governor-elect Kayode Fayemi to use the mandate given to him at the poll to improve the lives of the people.

The party elders said Fayemi’s second chance at the helm offers him a wonderful opportunity to restore Ekiti to the path of good governance and make a difference in the life of the people.

In a statement by its Chairman, Chief George Akosile, and Secretary, Chief Abiodun Ajayi, the Ekiti APC Elders’ Forum also hailed INEC for conducting a free, fair and credible election.

The forum praised the doggedness and determination of Fayemi and the deputy governor-elect, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, to succeed at the poll.

It also expressed its gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari, APC National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole; National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; governors, ministers and other party stalwarts for their contributions to the victory.

Also, the National Leader of Afenifere, Senator Ayo Fasanmi, has congratulated Fayemi on his election victory.

Fasanmi, in a joint statement with the Ekiti State Chairman of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural body, Elder Yemi Alade, issued by the Publicity Secretary, Chief Biodun Akin-Fasae, urged the governor-elect not to disappoint the electorate who elected him.

He said: “Now that the people have decided which way to go, Ekiti should never allow themselves to be manipulated by deceit and from those whose backgrounds we cannot vouch for.”

A local election observer group, Democracy Vanguard, has said last Saturday’s Ekiti State governorship election was a better improvement over the previous ones conducted in the Fountain of Knowledge state.

It congratulated the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the residents for ensuring a violence-free poll.

In a statement yesterday by its State Coordinator, Yetunde Adeoluwa, the organisation hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a free, fair, credible and conclusive election with an improvement over previous ones.

Adeoluwa said: “The peaceful conduct of the INEC and security agencies during the July 14 governorship election shows that our democratic process is improving.

“There was no record of ballot-snatching, rigging, violence or electoral malpractice, as it was experienced in 2007, while there was no security clampdown, compared to 2014. This is highly commendable.”

Also, Ekiti indigenes in the United States of America (U.S.A) have congratulated the governor-elect, Dr Fayemi, on his victory in last Saturday’s election.

Acting under the aegis of Ekiti Coalition for Change, the group urged the governor-elect to align with this biblical command and be fair to all Ekiti indigenes, regardless of their political leanings and beliefs.

In a statement in Washington DC by its Coordinator, Mr Samuel Ayodele, the Ekiti indigenes saluted the INEC for conducting the election in a manner that aligned with global best practices.

  • Oyetola congratulates Fayemi, Ekiti people, APC

A LEADING governorship aspirant on the platform of Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) , Mr.  Adegboyega Oyetola, has congratulated the people of Ekiti State for the victory of their governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at the last Saturday governorship election.

He also congratulated the Ekiti State APC, saying Fayemi’s victory was an affirmation of the competence and popularity of the governor-elect.

In a statement by Dayo Fasola, the Media Officer of Ileri Oluwa Campaign Organisation, a platform for promoting Oyetola’s political aspirations, the people of Ekiti State were assured of a new lease of life.

The statement reads: “We join other well-meaning Nigerians and all lovers and promoters of democracy worldwide to congratulate the new governor-elect of Ekiti State, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, for a successful, free and fair election that produced you.

“We believe your exemplary leadership qualities would see Ekiti State to greater heights. We thank the international communities and all the diplomats, who made sure they were fully on ground to monitor the election.

“We also commend President Muhammadu Buhari for ensuring that adequate security measures were put in place to enable a peaceful environment for the election’s conduct. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shown Nigerians that the confidence reposed in them as an unbiased umpire remains unshakable.

“We also congratulate Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, whose first outing as Chairman of the APC has led the party to victory in Ekiti State. So, we hereby urged the opposition to join hands with the new leadership of government to move the state forward as the APC has made people to understand and benefit from good governance as well as dividends of democracy.

“It was a case of mistrust and perpetual corrupt activities during the 16 years of PDP. On the contrary, the APC has brought smiles to the face of the people and that is why Nigerians home and abroad are joining hands with President Muhammadu Buhari to move the country forward.

“We can confirm to you that the good people of Osun State are acting in the same oneness and believe in the sustenance of the great laudable legacy of Ogbeni Aregbesola, who has transformed the state immensely.

“The trend of Ekiti election has shown that the masses are conscious that their interests are better protected by the APC.”

  • Ekiti people tired of recycled leadership, says Faparusi

A governorship aspirant in Ekiti State,  Bamidele Faparusi, said yesterday that the people are tired of recycled leadership.

They are craving for a fresh blood and ideas, he added in a statement.

Faparusi, a member of the Seventh House of Representatives, who is vying for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), advised former Governors Segun Oni and Kayode Fayem, who are also seeking the APC ticket to allow new people to fly the flag in the July 14 election.

According to him, “the shabby way the people are being treated by Governor Ayodele Fayose in his second coming, has made matter worse for those seeking to return to office.

He said: “The Ekiti electorate know what they want. The mood in town is that the masses no longer want Governor  Fayose’s domination of the politics in the state. His regime has not been profitable to the people.

“They want a fresh person who has never tasted that seat to come on board. They believe that all ex-governors are as cunning as Fayose, who has been dribbling and exploiting the people.

Faparusi accused Governor Fayose of impoverishing the people with his policies and by not paying salaries.

“Governor Fayose tricked Ekiti electorate to scheme a return to the Government House. “Today, he is busy demolishing houses in Ado Ekiti where he got the bulk of the votes that brought him back.”

On the election, he said: “This is the more reason why our leaders must be cautious. Winning this election goes beyond what APC can unilaterally dictate, it rests largely on the populace and we have to respect their views on the coming Ekiti election”, Faparusi advised.

  • Ekiti people will resist APC’s ‘rigging’ plot, says PDP chair

Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Gboyega Oguntuase has said the people will resist the alleged plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rig the July 14 governorship poll.

Oguntuase said the use of federal might and instruments of coercion would not save the APC from defeat in the election.

Declaring Ekiti as a “no-go area for APC,” the PDP chairman boasted that the opposition would not win the poll, even “if President Muhammad Buhari is brought down to serve as the Returning Officer”.

Oguntuase was reacting to the declaration by APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, that the governorship contest is a “must-win” for his party.

The APC national chairman spoke on Monday during the kick-off of his party’s membership mobilisation and a stakeholders’ meeting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Reacting to the statement yesterday, Oguntuase urged the international community to focus on the Ekiti poll and prevent it from being manipulated by the APC.

The PDP chairman also urged civil society organisations (CSOs) to monitor the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the conduct of the poll to reflect the true wish of the Ekiti electorate.

He said: “Every single APC member here in Ekiti knows that the party is nowhere near any chance of winning just one out of the 16 local government areas.

“The only thing they have been saying is that Governor Ayodele Fayose has been giving President Muhammadu Buhari problems and he (Buhari) has vowed to go to any length to take Ekiti from the governor to serve as a payback for his persistent criticism of the President.

“To us in the PDP, we can begin to draw correlation between yesterday’s ‘we must win the Ekiti election by fire by force’ comment of Chief  Odigie-Oyegun with the way APC members and leaders have been boasting of using federal might to take Ekiti.

“However, we are sure that even if President Buhari is brought to Ekiti as the INEC Returning Officer for the election, APC will still fail.

“The international community and CSOs in Nigeria should, therefore, begin to focus their attention on the election from now and beam their searchlights on INEC and other agencies of the Federal Government that will be involved in the election.

“This is because the election will be an indicator to the readiness and willingness of INEC to conduct free, fair and credible presidential election in 2019.”

  • ‘Ekiti people are tired of Fayose’

Adetutu Audu had a chat with Honourable Tajudeen Akingbolu soon after the House of Representative Committee on Local Government gave him awards as the best performing local government chairman in Ekiti and second best in the South-West. He traced the origin of Ayo Fayose’s recent travails in Ekiti and the secrets of his successes

Though Honourable Tajudeen Akingbolu, a lawyer, who was until last year in the Lagos Chambers of Mr. Femi Falana, has been in the saddle as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ekiti West Local Government for about eleven months, he portrays the picture of an authority in the running of local council in Nigeria. After the first constitutional six months, Akingbolu was reappointed along most of his colleagues for another six months a few months ago.

Recently in Abuja, at a well attended event by politicians, especially members of the National Assembly, the young lawyer shone like a morning star, when he was invited to the podium on two consecutive times to receive awards, first as best performing local government administrator in Ekiti State and later as the second best in the South West. The award was organised by the House of Representative Committee on Local Government to recognize excellence and encourage patriotism and hard work among local government chairmen in the country.

Rather than taking the achievement as a reward for his painstaking achievement, Akingbolu told The Nation that the credit should be given to Governor Kayode Fayemi, who he said created enabling environment and platform for him and his other colleagues to perform. While dedicating the award to the state governor, he commended the effort of the entire work force in Ekiti West for the support he had gotten so far.

“This is not an award I can single handedly claim, this is why I will dedicate it to my boss and governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and all members of staff of Ekiti West Local Government. By extension, the recognition is not only for me but for all the local government caretaker chairmen in Ekiti because we are working with the same blueprint,”

Speaking on his experience and achievements in the last eleven months, he said, “I think my tenure in office has been eventful as a result of the support I get from time to time from good people of my local government, especially members of my committee, who have consistently demonstrated their love for me and by extension for the local government. Really, the work has been strenuous with many challenges because we are the closest people to the grassroots but in our own way, we have learnt to turn all the challenges to our strengths, in such a way that it has improved our act of governance.”

On how he was able to perform in spite of the belief that state governors have taken over the jobs of local government administrations across the country, he said, “Let me start from the point that Mr. Governor has made governance very simple for serious minded chairmen in Ekiti State. This is because the 8-point agenda of the administration is all encompassing and a road map for development. To me, the 8-point agenda has formed a bench mark and a yardstick for all of us.

Reacting to the recent uproar that Fayemi was shortchanging the local government chairmen, he described the incident as unfortunate, saying it happened because some individuals enjoyed brewing controversy, where there was none. He said those who insinuated that  Fayemi was shortchanging the local government administrators didn’t  know the running of government in Ekiti.

“Ask any local government chairman in Ekiti, he will tell you that Mr. Governor’s assistant to the local government in the area of infrastructural development has been unprecedented in the history of the state. For instance, the construction of five kilometers road in all the 16 local governments by the state government has not only promoted uniformity, it enhanced quality standard. Ordinarily, this is a project that should be handled by the local government but out of the ingenuity of Mr. Governor, he co-funded it and made sure it was done very well. This is but one of such initiatives that was put in place to make sure every community and local government enjoy dividends of democracy. That allegation must have been sponsored by the opposition, who are either hell bent at destroying whatever the governor has done or trying to use it to gain relevance,” he said.

Akingbolu also dismissed the recent outburst by the former Governor Ayo Fayose that he was being victimised because the current administration saw him as a threat.

Akingbolu argued that there was no way the Afao Ekiti born politician could be an headache to ACN, because, according to him, “ his era had gone for good in Ekiti State,” he said, adding, “it will interest you to know that all the attacks Mr Fayose is getting in recent time are not even from ACN but from the Peoples Democratic Party. The former governor is being haunted by his past. In Ekiti, Fayose is like the Shakespearean’s Macbeth, who murdered sleep.

“He is not allowed to rest because of the many faces of violence that characterised his three and half years in government. During his time, Ekiti people were brutalised, traditional institution was embarrassed, students were killed in the College of Education Ikere and even politicians like Engr. Segun Oni, Otunba Yinka Akerele and Ayo Arise were attacked on different occasions. Just recently, his tugs attacked former Deputy Speaker, Taiwo Olatunbosun; the only honourable member during his term, who didn’t sign the impeachment notice against him.

“Why is he being attacked now that he is back in PDP; the truth is that the people are tired of him,” he said.
