  • Accreditation, voting begin in Eleka’s unit

Accreditation and voting have commenced simultaneously at Unit 007, Ofamofuru Hall, Ward 2, Okekuru in Ikere, where Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka will vote.

There are 1,103 registered voters in the unit.

Electoral officers were already at the unit by 7:00 a.m. and were seen setting up the hall.

Voters were seen searching for their names on the register posted on the wall.

The Presiding Officer, Layeni Segun, urged the voters to be orderly.

He said voting would end by 2:00 p.m., adding that the aged and nursing mothers should be allowed to vote first.

Prof. Olusola is expected to arrive any moment from now.

  • Ekiti poll: Controversy as police disperse PDP’s rally

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose sparked a huge controversy yesterday when he claimed that the police attacked him.

The governor claimed that the police shot at him and fired teargas that blinded him in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

But the Police said the governor was not attacked.

They said policemen fired teargas to disperse a crowd of people after they had been advised not to hold a rally.

Reporters who were at the Police Headquarters rushed down to the Fajuyi Pavilion, venue of the planned rally when the news broke that the crowd was being dispersed.

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) source  claimed that Fayose was attending to complaints from members who had been denied access to the pavilion when a teargas canister fired from outside the Government House landed very close to him. The governor inhaled the teargas and went down, he said.

Asked if other people with the governor did not inhale the teargas, the source did not reply. He said Fayose was taken to the Government House Clinic.

The governor later emerged from the clinic with neck brace to address the crowd that gathered at the Government House.

Fayose alleged that he was slapped and kicked by a police officer. He also alleged that he had been ordered to be killed.

Another source said the police did not enter the Government House, adding that “nobody beat His Excellency” who had his security details with him.

Deputy Governor and PDP candidate in Saturday’s election, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, also alleged that he was beaten by policemen.

The police said they stopped the PDP rally for security reasons and to maintain law and order.

Deputy Inspector General of of Police (Operations) Habila Joshak said the PDP neither sought for nor got permit for any rally.

Joshak said no unauthorised rally would be allowed in the state before Election Day on Saturday because of the prevailing security situation.

It was leant that the APC leadership wanted to organise a road show which the police declined to approve. It was promptly cancelled.

The Police Headquarters said “In furtherance to the presence of police officers around the Prof. Olusola Eleka pavilion at Fajuyi today (yesterday), two political parties intend to have their rally at the same date and in Ado-Ekiti metropolis but the commissioner of police advised the political parties in writing on the need to have theirn political activities at diferent time and because of the security implication.”

Prince Dayo Adeyeye, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries, described Fayose’s claim  as the latest “stunt” from “a clownish dramatist.”

It was not clear yesterday why it was only the governor who inhaled the teargas and how he got his neck injured as he addressed the crowd at the Government House wearing a neck collar.

The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) called for peace in the state.

Interim Chairman  Adeleye Agbede said: “Ekiti are a peace loving people with unrivalled passion for education and development.

He called on Fayose and Ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi “to caution their teeming supporters against violence.”

Speaking later, Fayose said: “My people, the Lord will fight this battle; the MOPOL of Nigeria Police, IGP and AIG ordered that the governor should be killed.

“I was slapped by a policeman. I was kicked and I was shot at. Be of great courage, be not dismayed, this battle will be won.

“This is an army of occupation. This is not the democracy we fought for. My people, don’t be afraid. I pray they will not cause the 1983 problem in Ekiti State.

“Ekiti is under siege. How can I be governor of Ekiti State and they treated me like this? My people, stand and keep standing. I will go back to the hospital and remain there. I want you to stand by Eleka (Olusola).

“I plead with the international community: Nigeria is in trouble, please arise and stand for justice. They have arrested so many teachers, okada riders and PDP members.

“Come and save PDP. We are in majority. We are a party to beat. Come and save us. They said they are under instruction to kill me and PDP candidate.”

Fayose wept while being interviewed by journalists.

He said: “I am in severe pain, I am in severe pain. Should anything evil happen to me, the Inspector General of Police should be held responsible.”

Olusola said: “They shot sporadically into the air and one of them beat me. I told him that I am the deputy governor, he said deputy governor my foot.

“We had not moved out to the streets at all; we were walking to our campaign office. The COMPOL (Commissioner of Police) MOPOL (Mobile Police) said to my hearing that it was an instruction from the Presidency.

“They manhandled my governor and slapped him with the butt of the gun in the back. It was an attempt to assassinate the governor but they will never succeed.

“Who then is safe in Nigeria? We should tell Buhari that enough is enough; the Presidency should be warned that enough is enough.

“God is with us. The army that is with us is greater than the army that is with them. God is with us.”

Ekiti PDP Chairman Gboyega Oguntuase accused the Inspector General of planning to rig the election for the APC.

Oguntuase said: “When the IGP was CP in Kano State, democracy was bastardised; votes in Kano were rigged.

“This election shall hold and be won by people who are behind PDP.

Presently, the police are laying siege to the Government House.”

Senate Deputy Minority Whip Mrs. Biodun Olujimi said PDP members still have the right to hold rallies because the time frame allowed by the Electoral Law had not lapsed.

Soldiers and policemen had taken over the Fajuyi Pavilion.

They parked their vehicles inside the arena and kept guard over the facility. An Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) was stationed there.

The security men said they were under instruction not to allow any rally because of the tense situation in the state.

PDP members, who arrived the place in their white apparel as instructed by the governor, were turned back.

A close aide to Fayose, Abiola, was arrested. He is being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Section at the Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti.

  • Averting violence in Ekiti poll

Ekiti State elders under the aegis of Igbimo Ure Ekiti (IUE), led by frontline pharmacist Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, reflect on the preparations for next Saturday’s governorship election and advise stakeholders, including federal and state governments, political parties, the electoral umpire and the electorate, to play by the rules and avoid rigging and other unruly behaviours that could spark off violence before, during and after the exercise.

Igbimo Ure Ekiti (IUE) is a consultative body of eminent elders and leaders of Ekiti State from within and outside Nigeria. IUE has no political affiliation. Our mission is to provide thought leadership and direction for our people on matters pertaining to the overall interest and development of Ekiti State. We leverage on the robust intellectual endowment, the various and overwhelming experience of our members in the different disciplines, professions, vocations and businesses, as well as the unique homogeneity of our people in Ekiti State, to optimally harness the resources in the State, in order to achieve a politically stable, economically viable and peaceful environment for the betterment and progress of Ekiti people.

As members of this body both individually and collectively, we continue to monitor the build-up of events leading to the governorship election scheduled for Saturday July 14th, 2018. We are seriously concerned for the peace and safety of the sons and daughters of Ekiti State. We are mindful of the demonstrated desperation erupting from some of the participants in the on-going electoral process in the State. For instance, while the opposition believes that they are unstoppable in their quest to capture power and that they will stop at nothing to achieve this, the party in power on the other hand believes that it is immovable. Therein lies the danger unless something decisive is done by the well-meaning members of Ekiti State and by those that are directly involved in organising and conducting the election. There is also the issue of maintenance of law and order to ensure a free, fair and transparent process to guarantee that the will of the people prevails at the end of the election. We can’t stand idly by while all this is going on. As Edmund Burke (1729-1797), the Anglo-Irish statesman, author, philosopher, politician, orator and political theorist observed, The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

The overriding purpose of this press conference therefore is to say No to rigging. No to violence. No to thuggery. No to killing. No to arson. No to ballot-box snatching and no to vandalism. On the other hand, we say with unity of purpose; yes, to one man, one vote, Yes to orderliness, yes to the spirit of sportsmanship and yes to peace and tranquillity. This is the purpose of this conference.

The strategic gains of a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent election, where the choice of the electorate is supreme cannot be over emphasized. The fact that the ultimate sovereignty lies with the people can also not be over-emphasized. If democracy in the words of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865 an American statesman, lawyer & 16th President of the United States of America) is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, it means therefore that the people are the centre piece of democracy. The need for the safety and security of the people must be of paramount concern to the political players. For us a as a people and in particular members of Igbimo Ure Ekiti (IUE) we must protect the safety and security of our people in our land.

We wish to recall that between 2007 and 2010, the Gubernatorial election and the re-run that followed upon the Court Order was characterised by killing, destruction of valuable assets, fear and trepidation among Ekiti State residents. No one will forget in a hurry, the Ido Osi tragedy, the Oye skirmishes, and the inconsistencies of Madam Ayoka Adebayo, the then Ekiti State Electoral Commissioner.

We also wish to recall the effort of this body before, during, and after the 2014 election between the then governor Dr Kayode Fayemi and Mr Ayodele Fayose. IUE spent considerable resources of its own to embark on political education through interactive meetings with leaders of various Political Parties, Traditional Rulers, the Security Agencies including but not limited to the Police, the Department of State Security and others. We made repeated and sustained appeals to the citizens of the State, not only during the meetings, but also through the electronic and print media. This was in addition to enlisting the support of our Traditional Rulers and Religious Leaders all in a bid to ensure peaceful, fair, and free election. Because of these efforts by us and other well-meaning organisations and individuals of the State, the 2014 election witnessed less tension and atrocious events.

We recognise with serious anxiety, the tension that has enveloped the State as the date of the election approaches. Shootings, hate speeches and talking tough appear to be the order of the day across all the political divide and more particularly, the two major parties. IUE wishes to appeal to all the stakeholders including but not limited to the Government at the centre, the State Government as well as the Security Agencies to please allow Ekiti State’s electorate elect their own Governor under a free and fair atmosphere in the interest of peace and stability of the State in particular and also that of the nation in general.

As a people, we must learn from history. The failure to learn from history is the reason for repeating same mistakes. We wish to recall with pain and anguish the Electoral Crisis of 1983 in the old Ondo State (comprising of the present Ondo State and Ekiti State) which occasioned loss of several lives and destruction of properties. An election was held. The National Party of Nigeria’s candidate Chief Akin Omoboriowo was declared the winner of the election, contrary to the overwhelming expectations of the electorate. The electorate felt cheated and simultaneously embarked on a large scale violent protest. Peace eluded the entire State until the Supreme Court of Nigeria declared that the election was indeed won by Chief Adekunle Ajasin of the Unity Party of Nigeria. Ekiti people regard cheating with aversion.

In the advertisement made by IUE in the Punch newspaper of Sunday 20th of May 2018 at page 19, we made the point abundantly clear that we do not want Ekiti State to be a theatre of war in the unbridled, mad, and selfish ambition to grab power and governance of Ekiti State at any and all cost.  Igbimo Ure Ekiti (IUE) wishes to warn that there will be consequences for any politician that maybe involved in any act of violence before, during, and after the July 2018 election in the State. We believe we have the capacity not only to give this warning, but also to enforce it. We vividly remember that our forebears sacrificed life and limb to protect the integrity and fundamental values which make up the hallmark of the Ekiti people. Our own generation is not about to abandon the pursuit and sustainability of the virtues of integrity and uncommon bonding, a heritage for which Ekiti people have been known for generations.

As for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), we shall hold the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu by his words that INEC will be transparent in their dealings, diligent in their efforts and accountable not only to the people but to all Electoral Monitoring Groups both local and international so as to ensure that the election is not only proclaimed to be free and fair but is actually seen to be free, fair, transparent and credible. We charge INEC to ensure that every vote counts and that whatever technology is deployed for the election is fool proof and beyond question. After all, there are less than 1 million registered voters in Ekiti. There are 16 local governments and the terrain is even and easily accessible. There is no doubt that the Ekiti State July 14th, 2018 election will be a litmus test and a model to the 2019 general elections. IUE expects INEC to demonstrate not only their independence, but also that they are a reliable umpire for all the contending political parties.

We appeal to election observers from various interest groups to be totally impartial and turn in credible reports during the election.

To the Police and other Security Agencies, we call for your vigilance, fairness and even-handedness throughout the election period. IUE commends the leadership, men and women of the security agencies for their good work in 2014. Your performance at that time must be seen as the least expected of you all in the 2018 election. With the palpable fear of the people within the State that the army may be used for this election, we call on Mr President and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammed Buhari to ensure that men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces are not involved in an electoral process that is totally, essentially and constitutionally a civil matter.

Election is not a war. The earlier we began to instil confidence in the ability and the capacity of the Nigerian Police Force together with other civil security agencies for the prevention and detection of crime, apprehension of offenders, protection of lives and properties, preservation of law and order and due enforcement of our laws and regulations including our electoral laws, regulations and guidelines, the better for our democracy.

To our traditional rulers, we beseech you to please continue to ensure that politicians do not invade your kingdoms to recruit thugs or import thugs to your domains. Please note that thugs are hired by desperate politicians to instil fear, cause destabilisation and trepidation among the people. As the fathers of all, please feel free to call any erring politician in your domain to order. Let us all be involved in the task of preventing violence leading to the destruction of lives and properties of our people. We urge you to resist any attempt by any political leader or leaders to recruit the youths of your domain both employed and unemployed as political thugs and hirelings during the process of this election.

To our religious leaders, IUE covets your prayers for a very successful and violent free election.

To the youths, it is important for you to realise that to accept to be a thug or hireling to any political leader or leaders is to destroy yourself physically, mentally and psychologically both in the present and in the future. Resist ev0ery attempt to be enticed with money and other momentary gains at the expense of your destiny. Your future is way more important.

In conclusion, IUE wishes to State as we did before the Ekiti State 2014 Governorship election that IUE together with other stakeholders in the Ekiti State project cannot and will not stand by to watch the political class take Ekiti State back to the dark days or allow our land of honour to be turned into a theatre of war just to promote the selfish ambition of any individual or group of individuals under whatever nomenclature. No, not again and God forbid. It is our strong belief that, ceteris paribus, a peaceful, free and fair election on July 14th, 2018 is possible and attainable if all the relevant stakeholders commit themselves to this goal. We invite the media and other well-meaning organisations to join us in this drive.

  • Ekiti poll: PDP, Fayose haunted by past misdeeds, says Oshiomhole

NATIONAL Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, are being haunted by their past misdeeds and have resorted to panicky measures in their desperation to win the July 14 governorship election in the state.

Addressing newsmen ain his maiden news briefing at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja yesterday, Oshiomhole said that both Fayose and his party were afraid that the rigging machinery they deployed against former Governor Kayode Fayemi during the election that brought Fayose into office would also be deployed against them by the APC.

Comrade Oshiomhole said: “We all know that Fayose was rigged into office. And this is no secret because the military officers involved have since confessed to the roles they played as well as those involved in the dollars that were withdrawn from the NNPC. These are no secrets anymore.

“I think that Fayose thinks that the very instrument he used to come to power will be used against him. This is a party of change and so, we are not about to copy the darkest side of the PDP.

“If he is afraid of being rigged out, why is he collecting PVC from registered voters and giving queries to people for refusing to surrender their PVC? Why is he harassing heads of institutions and directing lecturers to award 20 per cent free marks to any student that votes for his candidate? “While I have respect for anybody who occupies the office of the governor, I think honestly that Fayose enjoys lying. But the truth is that he is haunted by the ghost of the forces he used to capture power because he didn’t win the last election.”

The APC National Chairman also accused Governor Fayose and his party of intimidating workers in the state to surrender their voter cards.

He said the governor had ordered civil servants, teachers and other categories of workers in the state to surrender their permanent voter cards (PVCs), adding that those who refused to surrender their cards had been queried by the government.

He also alleged that the governor had directed lecturers in institutions of higher learning in the state to award free 20 marks to students who vote for his candidate, adding that since Fayose has never won a free and fair election, he thinks that the process that brought him to office would be used against him.

Oshiomhole said: “I believe that the people of Ekiti State are very much aware of what the issues are. There is no better evidence of how prepared we are than the fact that the PDP is panicking.

“You must have read reports that in clear violation of the electoral act, Governor Fayose has instructed civil servants, principals of schools, headmasters to retrieve PVC from civil servants because he is afraid that the civil servants and the people of Ekiti State will not vote for him and in demonstration of that, they are helping to educate the people on why they should not vote for his candidate.

“He has not paid salaries for one year in spite of the fact that the federal government gave him bailout which he chose to divert to other uses. So, they are panicking, and while we are encouraging people to collect PVC, he is retrieving PVC.

“We heard that they have started issuing query to workers, including teachers, for refusing to surrender their PVC.

“I don’t think you need any other evidence that the Governor is panicking, and we can’t wait to have him swept away in a free and fair election on the basis of one man, one vote, one woman, one vote.

“Secondly, you are all witnesses to the fact that we have conducted elections in the Southwest. In Osun State, we went for the senatorial election and our party lost and they won. We didn’t complain about rigging, because we felt that the people preferred Adeleke.

“We also went for election in Anambra, and when the governor complained that his security were  withdrawn, the President ordered that they be reinstated immediately. We lost that election to APGA.

“We went for an election in Bayelsa State and one of the President’s loyalist was a candidate and he lost.

“For us, PDP rigging machine is not what we want to copy. What we have done is to dismantle it. What Fayose can complain about is that he was never used to winning an election on the basis of merit.

“His first time, he hid under the then President’s do or die election approach to win and, of course, the same President supervised his impeachment. Now, he must learn to win election by persuading the people. Why should a ruling party hold its rally by the roadside so that you can manipulate the crowd?”

Reacting to the claims by Governor Fayose that the federal government closed the Akure Airport to deny their leaders the opportunity to attend the rally, Oshiomhole said the governor was crying wolf as nothing of such happened as governors and leaders of the PDP freely landed and took off from the Akure airport with their private jets.

He also dismissed the claims that APC was trying to manipulate the Independent National Electoral Commission to rig the election in their favour.

He said: “Fayose said people were not allowed to fly into Akure airport, but our people have been there to produce a tape of how PDP governors and non-governors littered Akure airport with private jets.

“He has gone ahead to say that INEC wants to rig him out. Every armed robber thinks that every other person is an armed robber. If there is any political party that is on record as having consistently colluded with INEC, it is the PDP. I am an apostle of one man, one vote.

“I rely on my sole power of persuasion and mobilization and dismantled PDP machinery in Edo State within firing a bullet. We came from the background of people winning election without relying on federal instrument and so don’t need any reinforcement to do what we know best.

“We will ensure that the rules of the game are obeyed. We have no apology for the fact that this time, Fayose will run on its records and will not be able to use those instruments he used before.

“If that is what he called rigging, too bad. We have seen a consistent pattern by the PDP that when elections are approaching, they will be shouting rigging, rigging while they are perfecting the act of rigging themselves. “What we have brought on board as the new NWC of the APC is how to monitor and ensure that the rigging machine of the PDP is completely dismantled.”

On the call that a vote for Fayemi is a vote for herdsmen, he said “Fayemi was Governor in Ekiti State and there were herdsmen when he was governor and he was able to bring leadership to bear and involved the stakeholders. The truth is that we all need each other.

“So, when people resort to bringing in those divisive messages, it tells you how bereft of ideas they are. And with that coming from a man who called himself a professor, then I said no wonder that most professors are not successful in politics. “I thought that as a Professor, you will have a much richer message. When I watch him saying that a vote for Kayode is a vote for herdsmen, I said poor professor.

“The message I want to pass across is that Kayode Fayemi is not a stranger to Ekiti Government House, and when he was there, he knew how to manage everyone. Why is Fayose not able to manage that?”

  • PDP, Fayose taking panicky measures – Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of resorting to panicky measure in their desperation to win the July 14 governorship election in the state.

He accused the PDP of intimidating workers in the state to surrender their voter’s cards.

Oshiomhole, who spoke at his maiden news briefing at the party national secretariat in Abuja, said the governor has ordered civil servants, teachers and other categories of workers in the state to surrender their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), adding that those who refused to surrender their cards had been queried by the government.

He also alleged that the governor has directed lecturers in institutions of higher learning in the state to award free 20 marks to students who vote for his candidate.

The ex-Edo State governor said since Fayose has never won a free and fair election, he thinks the same process that brought him to office would be used against him.

Oshiomhole said: “I believe that the people of Ekiti State are very much aware of what the issues are. There is no better evidence of how prepared we are than the fact that the PDP is panicking.

“You must have read reports that in clear violation of the electoral act, the Governor Fayose has instructed the civil servants, principals of schools and headmasters to retrieve PVCs from civil servants because he is afraid that the civil servants and the people of Ekiti State will not vote for him and in demonstration of that, they are helping to educate the people on why they should not vote for his candidate.

“He has not paid salaries for one year despite the fact that the federal government gave him bailout which he chose to divert to other uses. So, they are panicking and while we are encouraging people to collect PVC, he is retrieving PVCs.

  • We’ll deploy enhanced smart card readers for Ekiti poll – INEC

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said on Wednesday the Commission would deploy enhanced Smart Card Readers (SCRs) for the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State.

Yakubu, who also dismissed claims that card readers have been pre-loaded and Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) cloned ahead of the election, said electoral process in the country has gone beyond the capacity of INEC officials.

At least 35 political parties will take part in the election.

Yakubu, who spoke at the opening of INEC Quarterly Consultative Meeting with political parties, said: “In Ekiti State, where we are deploying the enhanced Smart Card Readers (SCRs), this process has not even commenced. It is impossible to pre-load the card readers, let alone do so with cloned PVCs. In any case, electoral officials at polling units on election day will cross -check the voter’s name on the voters’ register which includes the voter’s photograph.

“The voter must be personally present in order to vote. It cannot be done by proxy or prior to election day. Is the voters’ register already given to each of the 35 political parties fielding candidates in the Ekiti governorship election, also cloned? Is the bearer of the cloned card also going to have a cloned face to match the original photograph on the register printed from our database? We appeal to Nigerians to discountenance this unimaginative theory which is similar to the allegation of ‘scientific rigging’ before a previous stand-alone governorship election in which the Commission was accused of deploying a special ballot paper that altered the voter’s choice within minutes after it has been dropped into the ballot box in favour of another political party.”

The INEC chief, who described the claim that the PVCs are cloned and smart card readers pre-loaded, as simply ludicrous, said the card readers are configured to specific polling units not more than 72 hours to the election and can only be operated by 8:00 a.m. on election day.

  • Ekiti people will resist rigging of guber poll – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday warned that the Ekiti people would resist attempts by anybody or group to rig the state’s governorship election slated for July 14.

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies against attempts to toy with the will of Ekiti people.

The statement read: “PDP restates that the will of the people is stronger than the machinations of evil-minded persons, who are toying with the determination of the people for a free and fair electioneering.

“The party warns that INEC officials working with agents of the APC to compromise the process are brazenly risking the legitimate wrath of the people of Ekiti State in their iron-cast resolve to ensure that nobody subverts their will in this election.

“The people of Ekiti State are already aware of the clandestine meetings between known INEC officials and APC agents, including those held at the Ondo State Government House in Akure, where plots were hatched to use INEC’s ICT Department to preload card readers and input false results, as well as cloning unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to superimpose pictures of their members from other states.

“The PDP cautions these compromised INEC officers, their allies in the APC and those they planned to import from other states, to note that their tracks and footprints are all bare and that the people of Ekiti State are already at alert and ready to stop them on their trails with every potency available to them under the law.

“What the APC and their cohorts in INEC fail to note is that Ekiti is a contiguous state where every indigene and residents know and can identify one another other as individuals and families and that as such there is no way in which strangers imported from other states can be allowed to sneak in and participate in their election.

“Let it be known to all that the PDP is fully mobilized for the July 14 election. The people of Ekiti State are fully rallied to vigilance at every polling unit, every collation center as well as every exit and entry points in their respective areas across the state to ensure that nobody subverts their collective will.

“We restate the fact, clearly known both to INEC and the APC, that Ekiti State is a stronghold of the PDP and that the people are solidly behind the PDP, particularly due to the sterling performance of Governor Ayo Fayose in developing the state in all spheres of lives.

“The APC and their rejected candidate should therefore end their desperation to forcefully take over the state as no amount of machination, intimidation, threats or even arrests and detention can subjugate the people of Ekiti State, on any score, let alone, on their governorship election.”

  • 30,000 policemen deployed for Ekiti election – CP

The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Bello Ahmed, said on Thursday that at least 30,000 policemen would be deployed for the July 14 governorship election in the state.

Ahmed disclosed this while hosting some journalists at the Command’s headquarters in Ado-Ekiti.

He said the Command had mapped out strategies to ensure hitch- free election, saying with effective from July 9, policemen would be deployed to strategic locations in the state.

The police commissioner advised residents in the state to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner before, during and after the election.

He also assured people of the state of safety of their lives and property.

He said: “Robust security has been put in place come July 14.  Not less than 30,000 policemen would be deployed and other logistics would be on ground. Our tactical teams are ready for the task ahead.

“Effective from July 9, everything would take shape and everybody would be in their positions. All the threats analysis had been conducted. We are fully ready for the poll and if the election is today, it just for us to press one or two buttons.

“I want to encourage the people of Ekiti to be law abiding, to give us timely and credible information. I equally advise them to come out on election day to exercise their civil rights and responsibility to vote for candidate of their choice peacefully and retire back to their houses peacefully.”

  • Fayemi faults Fayose’s claim on Paris Club refund

The Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation has debunked claims by Governor Ayodele Fayose that the Federal Government is deliberately delaying disbursement of Paris Club cash to states of the federation to hurt Ekiti State’s bid to pay workers salary.

Fayose had said the alleged move by the federal government was to incapacitate Ekiti State from paying workers salary to enable the All Progressives Congress (APC) use non-payment of salary as a campaign tool against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Prof. Olusola Eleka, in the July 14 governorship election.

A statement by Fayose’s media aide also alleged that Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s administration plunged the state into debt, including leaving two months’ salaries unpaid and that N35.34b was being deducted every month from Ekiti allocations to service the debt.

He argued that if the governor had N35.34billion, he would not owe workers.

But a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity for the Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Wole Olujobi, faulted the claims, saying Fayose was using cheap blackmail to get undeserved public sympathy and support ahead of the July 14 poll.

Olujobi said  Ekiti total debts while Fayemi was leaving office, according to DMO, was N18billion.

He added that contrary to claim that Fayemi owed two- month salary, the administration owed just one month salary mainly because Fayose threatened banks not to grant Fayemi a standing facility to pay salary ahead of Abuja allocation.

He said: “This is a cheap blackmail and characteristic propaganda by Fayose who has taken Ekiti people for fools as he often derides them among his friends. How can one claim that N35.34b is being spent to service a debt of N18b?

“How can the Federal Government cripple all the states because of the election in Ekiti State as if President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is like President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration that paid Ecological Fund cash to PDP’s states but refused to pay APC states?

“How did Fayose spend the Paris Club refunds he earlier collected to pay salary but refused to pay workers?

“Fayose collected a bailout of about N20b in two tranches for workers’ salary but diverted all to self-serving projects having earlier taken N2b CBN small-scale business credit scheme but never release one kobo to any small-scale business owner.”

  • Fayose will be caged on election day – Fayemi

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has assured the people of Ekiti State of adequate security on July 14 when they will go to polls to elect a new governor.

Fayemi urged eligible voters to come out and exercise their civic rights and not to be intimidated by Governor Ayo Fayose’s alleged threats to cause mayhem on election day.

The APC flag bearer declared that the incumbent governor will be caged on the day of election as he (Fayose) will only be allowed to vote and go back to his house in Afao.

He said: “We will ensure adequate security for voters on election day because if you are not well protected, the election will not be free, far, credible, transparent, genuine and acceptable.

“Fayose cannot threaten or intimidate anybody on the day of election. Fayose will only be allowed to cast his vote and he will go back to his house in Afao.”

Fayemi who spoke on Thursday while on campaign tour to communities in Ido/Osi Local Government Area said he was on a mission to rescue Ekiti people from poverty, misery, bad governance and put the state on the path of good governance, progress and development.

Communities visited by Fayemi include Ifaki, Orin, Ora, Aaye, Ifisin, Igbole, Osi, Ido, Ilogbo, Usi and Ayetoro where more People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders and members defected to the APC.

Fayemi was joined at the rallies by the deputy governorship rally, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi; Ekiti APC Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe; former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye; former House of Assembly Speaker, Dr. Adewale Omirin; former House of Assembly member, Mrs. Bunmi Oriniowo and a senatorial aspirant, Dr. Olusegun Osinkolu.

He described the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State as a vote for freedom.

The APC flag bearer said Fayose, his party, PDP, and the candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, have nothing to showcase in those communities in the last three-and-half years noting that the projects being enjoyed by the people were the ones he (Fayemi) executed in his first tenure.

Fayemi said projects like civic centres, health centres, five kilometer community roads, school and hospital renovations are flagship projects that will swing votes in APC’s favour.

He promised that all the human capital development policies like payment of monthly stipends to the aged, free health services, free education, payment of WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and JAMB fees for pupils in public schools will return the movement an APC government takes over
    in October.

Fayemi also promised more Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) assisted projects, employment through Peace Corps, Ekiti Traffic Management Agency (EKSTMA), return of Core Subject Allowances and Rural Teachers’ Allowances, regular payment of workers’ salaries and pensioners’ benefits.

According to him, a special health intervention programme for Obas and chiefs tagged “Ilera Laafin,” Local Council Development Areas, Volunteer Corps scheme, among others will return.

He also debunked the PDP allegation that he would sack teachers and civil servants noting that workers enjoyed salary increase three times during his first tenure.

Fayemi lampooned Fayose for owing core civil servants, local government workers and teachers between five and nine months salaries expressing regret that no worker had collected salaries meant for this year (2018).

He said it was an act of irresponsibility and insincerity for the governor to be calling himself a friend of civil servants and teachers and still be owing them arrears of salaries despite getting financialreliefs from the Federal Government.

The former Minister of Mines and Steel Development declared that the PDP will meet its waterloo on election day as Ekiti people who had allegedly been deceived will show the umbrella party the way out of the Government House.

He urged party members and voters to go back to their units and work noting that election is not won on the social media but at the polling units.

Fayemi added: “Let’s deal with them (PDP) with our votes, we are going to give them a bloodied nose with our votes on July 14 because Fayemi of today is different from that of yesterday.

“If the PDP people come here, they have nothing to campaign with and that is why they are resorting to lies but they have exhausted their lies.

“Go to your units, vote and protect your votes. Election is not done on Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp, the votes are at the polling units.

“APC will give a better life to our people, we have done it before and with your support, we will do it again because our legacies are all around the state for everybody to see.”

In almost all the communities visited, hundreds of PDP top members defected to APC citing greed, selfishness and undemocratic conduct of the governor.

At Igbole, Isaac Idowu led the entire Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM) structure to defect to APC. An appreciative old woman led scores of women to thank Fayemi for providing them succour through payment of monthly social security stipend to stay alive.

At Ifaki, country home of former Governor Segun Oni, who joined Fayemi on campaign trail, the APC’s standard bearer thanked Ifaki people for their unflinching support and pledged that he would ensure the development of the town and welfare of its people.

Mammoth crowds attended rally at Ido-Ekiti where Cyril Fasuyi popularly called the “GOC of Ido/Osi Politics, led who is who in Ido politics to defect to APC.

He described Fayose as a “selfish politician who fraudulently schemed him out of the House of Representatives contest in 2014,” vowing that the governor would pay for his undemocratic and callous conduct to members of his party who worked for his success at poll but “paid them back with evil”.

Fasuyi assured that 27,000 votes in Ido would be delivered to APC and vowed to take Fayose to court for taking Ido Osi allocations and misappropriated them for selfish motives.

All local government and ward executive members defected to APC, with the promise to deliver all the votes in Ido for APC.
