The gunmen were said to have invaded Adeoye’s residence at about 9.00 pm and opened fire on the victim while he was eating.

Adeoye was the APC chairman in his local government area before he became the state treasurer at the state congress in September.

The police spokesman Caleb Ikechukwu disclosed that the state command has commenced investigation into the killing assuring that the culprits would soon be nabbed.

The state chapter of the APC has expressed shock at the killing of a member of the State Working Committee (SWC).

The APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ade Ajayi, disclosed that the state exco had paid a condolence visit to the family of Adeoye.

Ajayi in a statement on Thursday said the state APC Chairman, Mr. Paul Omotoso, described Adeoye as responsible, honest, committed party man praying that such an incident would not happen again.

Ajayi also quotes Omotoso as describing the killing of the treasurer as a “terrible blow” to Governor Kayode Fayemi, APC, party members and the Moba people.

The APC Chairman in Moba council area, Mr. Femi Adeyeye, described the incident as a “rude shock” to all party members and people of the community.

Adeyeye urged the state government and the party not to forget the family of the slain Adeoye.

The APC delegation from the state exco also paid a condolence visit to the Oore of Moba land, Oba James Adedapo Popoola, in his palace in Otun-Ekiti, on the killing of the party leader.

Omotoso urged the monarch to take solace in God on the loss of a prominent son of the community saying the party would do everything possible to bring the killers to book.

Oba Popoola thanked the APC leaders for the visit noting that the incident has created an injury in the hearts of the people of the town that would take time to heal.

Ex-Rep urges APC to pick flag bearer from Ekiti South

A former Houses of Representatives member, Bamidele Faparusi, has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State to choose its governorship flag bearer from the Southern Senatorial District.

Faparusi spoke yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, while officially declaring his intent to run for governorship on the platform of the progressives’ party.

The aspirant also inaugurated his campaign coordinators and opened his campaign headquarters at Similoluwa on Iworoko Road in Ado-Ekiti.

Faparusi, who hails from Ode-Ekiti in Gbonyin Local Government Area, said the general feeling in the state was that the next governor should come from Ekiti South, which had not produced the chief executive.

He said: “Any attempt by our party to look beyond the South to field our candidate means we are kissing the governorship bye-bye. For APC to win, we must pick our candidate from the South.”

Faparusi, who represented Ekiti South Federal Constituency II between 2011 and 2015, promised to provide jobs for youths, empower artisans and attract investment to the state, if given the top job.

‘Ekiti South should produce next governor’

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State Chief Muyiwa Olumilua spoke with ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on his mission in politics and the blueprint for the development of the state.

What are you vying for governor?

I am Michael Olumuyiwa Olumilua; I was born on 23rd January, 1969 to the family of Evangelist Bamidele Isola Olumilua, the former Governor of old Ondo State and Mrs. Theresa Gbesi Olumilua in Ikoyi, Lagos. I started my primary education at St. Charles’ Hultz School, Ottawa, Canada before proceeding to United Nations International School, Manhattan, New York, United States. I also had a stint at Our Lady of Apostles School, Herbert Macaulay, Yaba, Lagos before finishing my primary education at Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure, Ondo State where I was awareded the prize of being the best pupil in the statewide Ondo State Primary Schools Competitive Examination in 1979. I was admitted to Federal Government College, Idoani, Ondo State on National Merit for my secondary education.I attended Ondo State University (now Ekiti State University) where I bagged a B.Sc (Hons) in Estate Management in 1990 where I also obtained a master’s degree in Business Administration (specialising in Finance) in 1998. I had my National Youth Service in Sokoto State and at the conclusion of my service year, I joined the firm of Alonge, Ogunmoyero and Co. Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Ikeja, Lagos as an Estate Surveyor. I am currently Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Keshlink Investment Limited, Real McCoy Energy and Principal Partner at Muiwa Olumilua and Associates, a form of Estate Surveyors, Facility Managers and Auctioneers.

What of other responsibilities and political offices you held in the past?

I am the current President, Certified Institute of Auctioneers, Nigeria (CIAN) Abuja Chapter, a member of International Facility Managers Association (IFMA), Houston, Texas, United States. I was appointed a UNESCO Ambassador in 2016. Pertaining to my political experience, I was appointed a Senior Special Assistant on Project Monitoring to the Governor during the tenure of Dr. Kayode Fayemi between 2010 and 2012 and later as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Integration and Intergovernmental Relations between 2012 and 2014.

Why are you in the governorship race?

I believe I can do it and turn around the fortunes of our dear state for good and I believe that the APC is the right vehicle to achieve that objective. But we have to bring sanity into the system because governorship is not a thing of joke. This is a project we have to take with all seriousness because before you can vie for this type of office, there are some criteria you must meet. One of the reasons for the decline in the lives of our people is that we have not been choosing rightly. But is is unfortunate today that governorship is now for the highest bidders; it is the richest that win party tickets and governorship seats which is not supposed to be. It was not so during my father’s time as governor unlike now that if you don’t have up to close to a billion Naira, you cannot run for such an elective position.

What in your opinion, should be the criteria to select governorship candidates?

Let us always look at the quality of persons coming out, let us look at their experience, quality, pedigree and programmes and everybody must submit to party supremacy. We must put our party on a strong footing to win the next election so that there can be consistency and stability in governance. When we select the right candidate and our party wins, I believe that with diligent implementation of party manifesto and quality policies, our party will remain in power for a long time and there will be stability in government. Lagos State, for example, has been ruled by members of the same political familiy for the past eighteen years.

What is your agenda for the development of Ekiti State if you become the next Governor of Ekiti State?

I have an eight-point agenda for the development of Ekiti State which I have envisioned to give our people a new lease of life. The first one is Development and Empowerment of the Youth, the need for youth empowerment is critical to the future of Ekiti. Our planned programme of action will improve their access to resources that will enhance their knowledge, skills and attitude. Our planned line of action also includes making capital available to youths that have business ideas. Development of Rural and Urban Area Infrastructure is the second agenda on our manifesto. Infrastructure goes beyond opening up and construction of roads. Though we intend to invest massively in the areas of road construction and rehabilitation, we intend to take infrastructural development some steps further. Rural development presents opportunities for economc essentials in forms of goods and services that cannot be generated in an urban context. Number three is Education Sector Resuscitation and Advancement; we are strong advocates of the return of our oublic schools to what used to exist in years past. We will reintroduce skills and crafts and student apprenticeship, in order to ensure that graduates at secondary school level are empowered with skills for contributing to society’s good.

Our Agenda Four is Agriculture mechanisation and Agro-Allied Industry. Ekiti as we all know is an agrarian society but is a pity that Ekiti can hardly feed its people successfully, not to talk of having enough for trade with other states. Agro-business professionals and global investors will be attracted to the state through an incentive programme to be unveiled.  Our Agenda Five is Mtarnal and General Healthcare which is predicated on the need to give our women and children the support they need at critical moments and by extension, give the families more healthcare reliefs. Generally, a major focus in healthcare delivery is a self-sustaining heathcare system that will serve not only Ekiti State, but will serve neighbouring states as a viable means of revenue generation as well. Others on our development agenda are Bridging the Gender Gap, Innovation, ICT and Technology Development and lastly, Growth in the Areas of Technical Skills and Artisans Development.

You are from Ekiti South Senatorial District which is clamouring to occupy the governorship seat. What is your take on this agitation?

Agitations are allowed in a democracy and democracy involves consensus building. Although aspirants from all zones that are qualified are free to vie for the governorship seat, but the fact that nobody from Ekiti South has occupied the office since the state was created in 1996 is fuelling the agitation his time around. Ekiti South has quality aspirants, illustrious sons who are eminently qualified to be governor. But, we are not folding our arms expecting that power will be served to us like that. For the sake of equity, justice and fair play, Ekiti South should produce the next governor I have been selling the manifesto of the party and my eight-pint agenda to party delegates and members and the result has been positive. I believe I am qualified to be governor and I believe that by the grace of God, I will win my party’s ticket and ultimately the governorship seat. This is about our people who have been suffering in the hands of a rudderless government for the past three years. I am here to bring succour to our people through my agenda and the South will make history this time around through my humble self. I will serve my people diligently and with Muyiwa Olumilua as Governor, Ekiti future is assured, Ekiti will be in trusted hands.

‘Ekiti South should produce next governor’

Australia-based medical doctor and investor Dr. Wole Oluyede has joined the list of governorship aspirants in the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC). He recently unfolded his development blueprint for the state at Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports.

A MEDICAL practitioner, Dr Wole Oluyede, has joined the governorship race in Ekiti State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He has visited the party office in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, where he was received by the Acting Chairman, Mrs. Kemisola Olaleye.
On zoning, Oluyede lent his voice to the agitation that the next governor should come from Ekiti South Senatorial District, which is yet to produce a governor.
He said: “In Ekiti South Senatorial District, this party means business. The next governor must come from the South this time around. We have eminent sons and daughters who are qualified. Let us be fair to ourselves.
“I want to plead with contestants, there must be love among us and the unity, stability and interest of this party should be paramount to us. I have spoken with our leaders and former Governors Adebayo, Oni and Fayemi and they are all united in seeing the party win.”
A former member of the House of Assembly, Hon. Tope Agidi, who introduced the aspirant to the party leaders, said Oluyede, apart from his global exposure, identified with Ekiti by investing at home dismissing claims in some quarters that he is a “foreigner.”
Agidi said: “He had his early education in Ekiti and worked as a doctor in Emure, Akure and Lagos. Can that person be referred to as a foreigner? Despite his exposure globally, he is not far from home.
“He visits Ekiti frequently and has investments here; he served as a member of the Knowledge Zone Committee during the administration of Dr. Kayode Fayemi. The body was a think tank to Fayemi and he attends meetings all the way from his base.
“Oluyede is ready to cooperate with progressive-minded people of Ekiti to take our state to greater heights. He has interests in hotel/hospitality, mining, farming, healthcare and other investments”
The aspirant expressed sadness at the the alleged retrogression suffered by Ekiti under the PDP for about two-and-half years. He said had come to heal the state of its afflictions.
The aspirant who was accompanied to the APC secretariat by his wife, Mrs. Olukemi, and his campaign team, hails from Ikere Ekiti in Ekiti South and has been in the progressives camp since his foray into politics.
According to him, he was born into a political family as his father, the late Chief Folarin Oluyede, was a grassroots politician and an APC chieftain till he died in 2013. He said that he served as his father’s driver to various political meetings, rallies and campaigns in his younger days.
After qualifying as a medical doctor in 1986, Oluyede worked in government hospitals in Emure Ekiti, Akure and Lagos. He said he was passionate about Ekiti development hence siting a hotel in his native Ikere and farms in a bid to provide employment for the people
He said he had acquired experience and contacts in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Australia.
Oluyede promised to use agriculture to drive Ekiti economy and halt the over-dependence on allocation from the Federation Account.
He said the average allocation of N2.7 billion for a population of three million people translated to N900 per person. He described agriculture as the catalyst for developing the economy. He promised to be a “farmer-governor.”
The aspirant said that Ekiti will benefit from an $18 million investment in oil palm by a Malaysian firm in Africa pledging that the palm tree project would be executed whether he realizes his governorship ambition or not adding that he sealed the deal with Malaysian investors during a recent trip to the country.
He explained that 10,000 palm trees will be planted under the project to give employment opportunities to Ekiti indigenes and make the state depend less on the Federal Government for revenue.
Oluyede, who pledged to use agriculture to drive the economy of the state, said he would cultivate a farm as a governor to encourage the youths, civil servants and artisans to take to farming.
He said: “I will lay example on how we should all go back to the farm. I will be a governor who farms. I went to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia recently and I visited an oil palm plantation which was a 10,000 acre farmland.
On education, Oluyede promised to reintroduce boarding system to enhance academic excellence. He lamented that parents sent their wards to Ghana and Dubai to acquire education.
He recalled that when secondary schools ran boarding system, Ikere had about ten bakeries run by schools, which were producing bread.
Oluyede explained that he had developed health policies and programmes for other countries and international community, promising to replicate them, if he becomes governor.
He promised to make health facilities attractive to the people of the state by recruiting the best health personnel, equipping health centers with best medical equipment and make drugs available.
Oluyede said now is the best time for APC to win the Ekiti governorship crown calling on members and leaders of the party to be focused and united to ensure that the goal is achieved.
The aspirant expressed optimism that there would be no post-primary crisis in the party describing fellow contestants as one. He said the party would hold a thanksgiving service after the primary saying: “whether I win or lose, I will participate at the thanksgiving.”
The wife of the aspirant, Mrs. Oluyede described women as very important in politics and governance promising that the administration led by her husband would empower women and give them a sense of belonging in decision-making.
Mrs. Oluyede said: “Women are very important and that is why they say ‘train a woman an, train the nation.’ If we win by the grace of God, we will all sit down together and address all these issues together.
“Women hold the aces if they know how to use the power and influence given to them by God. Women, this is our time, we are going to enhance the status of women in politics, governance and empowerment.”
APC State Secretary, Paul Omotoso, said Oluyede is not strange to the state executive of the party praising him for assisting the party in picking the bill of payment of the secretariat staff and spending his resources to mobilize members for the party.
But state Acting Chairman, Mrs. Olaleye said many people who are claiming to be aspirants of the party on Facebook and WhatsApp are unknown to party members and leaders and had not identified with the party.
Mrs. Olaleye described Oluyede as a committed member who rescued the party when it was in a financial mess and had nobody to assist. She said the situation was so bad that party could not pay salaries of the staff but Oluyede assisted by sending money to pay all arrears owed secretariat staff.
She also commended Oluyede for remembering party members during the last Christmas with the purchase of bags of rice which made the faithful had a memorable Yuletide despite the fact that the party is not in power at state level.
The party boss described all aspirants wishing to contest for the ticket as “our children” advising their supporters to shun rumour mongering and setting the aspirants against one another.
Mrs. Olaleye said: “All of us own the party but it is good to be good because you assisted the party in the past and your wife also assisted the party in the past. Dr. Oluyede is one of the best materials in the party and we appreciate what you have done.
“By August this year, we will separate the boys from the men because some of those calling themselves aspirants want to use the title to negotiate and get other positions like commissioners, boards or even supervisors.
“There is nothing like Tokunbo in our party; I want to urge our members to desist from pulling one another down. If you have faith in Oluyede, stand with him and if you don’t have faith in him, pull out.
“It is not good to be doing something in his presence and doing another thing in his absence. This party is one, it belongs to us and we must work for the unity of all our aspirants showing interest to be our candidate and I believe our party will win the next governorship election.”

  • ‘Ekiti South should produce governor ‘

Former Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada Amb Dare Bejide has said the next Ekiti State governor should come from Ekiti South Senatorial District.

Bejide, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, said it was the right time for the governorship slot, which had been shared between North and Central senatorial districts, to move to the South, which is yet to produce a governor.

The PDP governorship aspirant, who hails from Ilawe-Ekiti, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, appealed to people to continue to support the PDP.

The former envoy said: “The people of Ekiti State owe it a duty to continue to vote for the PDP. Almost all the development projects and programmes in the state came into being under PDP governments. The 2018 election should ensure continuity which would be added advantage.

“Also, in the spirit of equity and fairness, the next governor of Ekiti State should come from the South Senatorial District. Our senatorial district is the only one yet to produce a governor 20 years after the state’s creation,” he stated.

  • ‘Power should shift to Ekiti South’

‘Power should shift to Ekiti South’

Former Group Managing Director, Wema Bank Plc and governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2014 election in Ekiti State, Mr Adebisi Omoyeni, has said that former governor of the state, Ayodele Fayose, and the Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade, are not in the race for the PDP gubernatorial ticket.

Omoyeni, who spoke in Lagos, said he has never considered the duo as posing stumbling block to his clinching the PDP ticket.

“I have said it elsewhere before now, that both Caleb Olubolade and Ayodele Fayose are not in the race.  Any party that picks a candidate from the South has won the election by 50 per cent in Ekiti State because people are ready; they know it is their time. And you know that we, the Ekiti people, don’t compromise. We don’t allow cheating and things must be properly done. There is an agreement in place and that agreement must be followed to the letter,” he said.

Omoyeni said that it took him about two years to agree to the challenge to seek election “because I’m a very busy person with work to occupy my time 24 hours of the day,”. He added that his acceptance to run for in the next election was part of his service to the people of Ekiti State.

“I am going there as service to my people. But, if we start talking of consensus, that means there must be criteria put in place. It is similar to going for an interview where specific criteria are used to assess every candidate, such as capacity, capability and integrity and I know I can scale through every one of them.

“Also, another thing you have to realise is that, even in the South, Ikere is one local government and it is both Ikere and Ado-Ekiti by the strength of their votes – being the largest towns in Ekiti, that decide who becomes a governor. I’m from Ikere and my mother is from Ado and I have been a good child, not just to both local governments, but to the whole of Ekiti,” he said.

Omoyeni said that, with what God has done through him, when he didn’t have any ambition, he believes that “the coast is clear; it is divinely arranged, it is beyond me.”

Asked if he can still work with Fayose, whom he had previously served as deputy, Omoyeni said that, of all the aspirants, he is the only one that is not controversial.

“I’m the only one that relates with everybody because a leader must be a leader and not to be seen teaming up with A to fight B and even, when they fight, you should be able to reconcile them,” he said.
