  • Ekiti pensioners will no longer cry over entitlements — Fayemi

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State said  on Monday that his administration would soon put in place creative measures aimed at clearing the backlog of pensioners’ gratuities.

According to him, the era when pensioners will  cry or pray  before getting what is statutorily due to them on monthly basis is over.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fayemi spoke at a meeting with the executive members of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP).

Fayemi  expressed displeasure at the condition  of the pensioners, noting that it was a consequence of non-payment of their gratuities and irregularity in  payment of pension.

NAN reports that the pensioners  led by their chairman, Ayo Kumapayi, had visited  the governor to congratulate him on  his recent victory at the Court of Appeal which had affirmed his election.

The governor said his administration had effected  a 100 per cent increase in the fund meant for gratuity payment.

According to him, the sum has been increased  from N10 million  to N100million  monthly in order to capture more pensioners in the process.

“ What we are doing right now is mainly a stop gap measure to ensure that the number of people who can access gratuity increases because how many retirees can N10million cater for even if it is N2 million gratuity that everyone is entitled to?

” Then barely four people would benefit,’’  he said

Fayemi also restated the resolve of his administration to establish recreational facilities for the elderly.

“I am particularly pleased that you are taking a broader look at support mechanism for your members.

“A wellness centre is a very well thought out idea and I recall that we’ve discussed at some point  the possibility of a facility as a home

“ Of course, we are not used to the white man’s  attitude of going to a home.

“We want to take care of our elderly in our own way as much as possible through facilities that can be a community for elderly pensioners and  used for recreational purposes.

“ So your wellness centre definitely is something that can fit into that idea of a recreational facility for pensioners and the elderly in Ekiti State

“I also find the idea of your type of early child’s scheme for pensioners who are obviously over 60 years reasonable , I think it’s a great idea and we have to explore that,’’ he said.

Earlier, Kumapayi said the purpose of the visit was to felicitate with the governor on his victory at the Appeal Court as well as appreciate him for his support to pensioners so far.

Ikumapayi commended the government for prompt payment of pension allowances and approval of immediate increase in the monthly gratuity fund from N10million  to N100million  monthly.

According to him, the gesture has allowed for more retirees to be catered for every month.

He, however, appealed to government to support the pensioners by establishing a wellness centre for retirees to enable them to  live long after retirement.

  • Southwest won’t play second fiddle again, say Ooni, Fayemi’s aide

OONI of Ife Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi and Chief of Staff to Ekiti State Governor Mr. Biodun Omoleye have said the Southwest region will not play a second fiddle again in the country’s politics.

They said in view of the unquantifiable contribution of the region in the country’s growth, it has no reason to allow itself to be schemed out of the country’s political configuration.

The Ooni and Omoyele added that the zone stands the chance of regaining its frontline position, if it embraces unity and value reorientation.

Oba Ogunwusi spoke at his palace in Ile- Ife, Osun State  yesterday when Omoleye  delivered  a lecture entitled:  “Enculturation of the Yoruba culture among youth: Implications on social reengineering  and good governance”, at a cultural programme organised by Yoruba Youth Council(YYC).

Oba Ogunwusi said: “Yoruba has always been known for being a pacesetter since pre-independence days. So, we cannot take backseat; and to achieve this, we must be united and our youths must promote our cultural, economic and political values.”

In Omoyele’s paper, the call for constitutional empowerment for the traditional rulers resonated.

The Chief of Staff insisted that such policy would help in stabilising the country.

Omoleye said the traditional rulers must be empowered to legally handle issues bothering on communal clashes, child abuse and local disputes that are causing distractions to government to decongest the conventional courts and reduce prison inmates.

He reiterated the desperate need for the Yoruba youths to rise up and defend the Southwest region in Nigeria’s politics, saying the zone won’t submit to the idea of playing second fiddle again for it to remain relevant and be vibrant.

The programme held at the palace of the Ooni of Ife also featured award presentation and honour for the prominent Yoruba traditional ruler.

Omoleye, in his paper, said the emasculation of the traditional institutions by governments contributed to the high-level of instability of the country.

“The traditional rulers should be empowered to handle cases relating to cultural differences, ranging from child abuse, matrimonial, communal differences and disputes.

“This will decongest the conventional courts and reduce prison inmates. This will also stabilise the society rather than the punitive English legal system that we are currently practicing.”

On politics, Omoleye added that the Yoruba youths must begin to pose as true ambassadors by joining the vanguard that would fight for the race to regain its rightful pride of place as people with integrity and rich cultural and political values.

Omoleye added that Yoruba race could not afford to be relegated, having taken the lead since the 50s under the leadership of the former premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“The first democratically elected government under the late Obafemi Awolowo ran the best civil service in Africa and established institutions that were the best in the continent.

“The first television station in Ibadan was a product of Yoruba vision, the Liberty Stadium and of course, the University College Hospital, Ibadan was at a time the best medical centre in the entire Commonwealth.

“With the personality like Oba Ogunwusi on the throne, hope has not been totally lost. This is a great time for reformation and restoration of Yoruba values and culture and our imperial Majesty is well-positioned to champion this course,” he said.

  • Supreme Court resumes hearing in Ekiti governor’s, Oni’s case today

THE Supreme Court will today resume hearing in the case between the former All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy Chairman (Southwest), Chief Segun Oni and Ekiti State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The panel hearing the case comprises Justices Musa Dattijo (presiding), Aba Aaji, Amina Adamu-Augie, Kumai Akaahs and John Okoro.

The apex court is expected to resolve the issue of who is a public officer in the suit in which Oni is challenging Fayemi’s eligibility to contest the Ekiti governorship election on July 14, last year, on APC’s platform.

Justice U.N. Agomo of the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti held that Fayemi was eligible to contest the election because as a minister (as he then was) he could not be described as a public officer as contemplated under Section 318 of the 1999 Constitution

Last February 12, the Court of Appeal sitting in Ado-Ekiti upheld the verdict, saying: “It is clear from the foregoing the first respondent (Fayemi) as Minister of Mines and Steel, even though in the Public Service of the Federation, was not an employee in the Public Service. Therefore, Article 2 of the guidelines does not apply to him.”

In his appeal before the Supreme Court, Oni is contending that the appeal court erred in its verdict.

He noted that “the main task in this appeal is the application of mischief rule of interpretation in resolving the proprietary of a public officer like a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or any other public officer contesting a party primary or general election while still retaining his public office and thereby using all the advantages of that office to advance a political course to the disadvantage of every other co-contestant, who is not a public officer”.

The brief added: “The appellant, who was the claimant at the trial court and the appellant in this appeal at the lower court contested alongside 31 others, including the first respondent (Fayemi), the governorship primary election of the second respondent’s party (APC). The said primary election to nominate the candidate of the second respondent was held on May 12, 2018, for the Ekiti State gubernatorial election, which was subsequently held on the July 14, 2018.

“The said primary election was conducted in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended and was expected to be conducted strictly in line and in accordance with the second respondent’s Constitution.”

  • S’ West leaders must change tactics to actualise restructuring, says Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi has said the Yoruba race needs to be more tactical to actualise the call for restructuring.

Fayemi urged the proponents of the policy in the region to change strategy and reach out to other regions on how to actualise the dream of Nigeria being restructured economically and politically.

Fayemi spoke in Ado Ekiti on Saturday at the opening session of the 2019 National retreat of the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG).

Fayemi said: “There are those who entertained fear on this issue of restructuring and whether this is legitimate or not, we must reach out to them, because we are not an island onto ourselves.

Expressing regret over voter apathy in the southwest, Fayemi said a situation where the total number of votes cast in all the states in the region was less than 50 percent of the total registered voters is worrisome.

“In the last presidential poll,  Ekiti registered 909,000 voters , only 381,000 voted, 0sun 1.67million , only 737,000 voted, Ondo, 1.8m registered , 586,00, Oyo, 2.7m registered , 891,000 voted, 2.36m registered  in Ogun, 605,000 voted and Lagos with 6.3m, only 1.56m voted,” he stressed.

He said whatever might be the reason for the low turnout of voters must be critically examined to properly correct the situation.

“This might be caused by deficit of trust or fraudulent multiple registration, but whatever the case was, as long as we remain a constituent part of this country, ARG should reflect on this and act appropriately.

“If it was as a result of deficit of voter education, then the ARG and governments need a lot to do.”

Fayemi said the Yoruba Academy and the DAWN Commission should also help look into issues that directly affect the region including voter apathy, influence of religion, economic development among others.

Also speaking at the event, Governor of Ondo State Rotimi Akeredolu and his Osun State counterpart, Gboyega Oyetola, said all the distinguishable traits of the southwest region initiated during the old western region must be brought back in the interest of the zone.

“We knew we had  to think outside the box in the southwest on how to bring our own paradigm and we thought of Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) to work on how to put us back on the right track.

The National Chairman of the group, Hon Wale Oshun, reiterated the issue of restructuring and advised that it should be taken back to the front burner to benefit the Yoruba race.

“The Yoruba people are progressive people. We are lovely and we care for each other. We are welfarists and we remain the same despite out stand in the just concluded governorship and legislative elections.

“All we want as a people is to ensure that our interests at the national level are protected and that we get a fair deal in the scheme of things”.

Oshun, however, expressed feat that Yoruba language is fast going into extinction due to paradigm shift caused by globalisation and laxity on the part of some parents.

  • Fayemi to S’ West Leaders: Put aside party politics for regional Integration

The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has urged Southwest leaders to to jettison party politics in the interest of the region for the sustainable development.

Fayemi said the region can only regain its pride of place in the country’s political configuration unless leaders never allow national politics to divide them.

He stated that all efforts must be geared by the leaders irrespective of political affinity towards the development of South West region.

He added that for desirous interest of Yoruba to be promoted and protected, there must be unity of purpose and togetherness.

Fayemi who spoke in Ado Ekiti on Saturday at a national retreat held by Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), disclosed that the All Progressives Congress governors in the southwest will work with the governor elect in Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde in the interest of the region.

The governor, however, said Yoruba race needs to be more tactical if desirous to actualise its advocacy issue of restructuring .

He urged the proponents of the policy in the region to change strategy and reach out to other regions on how to actualise the dream of Nigeria being restructured economically and politically.

On the deeply entrenched voter apathy in the southwest region, the last election, 16.2 million registered in the southwest, but said the outcome in all the states were shocking.

“There are those who entertained fear on this issue of restructuring and whether this is legitimate or not, we must reach out to them, because we are not an island onto ourselves.

Akeredolu said the act of using desperation to get into power is becoming high in the region, saying this has made it difficult for people to have control over their leaders.

The National Chairman of the group, Hon Wale Oshun, reiterated the issue of restructuring and advised that it should be taken back to the front burner to benefit the Yoruba race.

” This is one issue our governments and traditional rulers must correct and prevent from happening. That was why we started the Yoruba academy and we have been working on this with some States’.

The group’s leader also advocated true federalism urging political leaders in the region to take a firm stand to protect the rights of the Yoruba race.

“Our leaders who know that restructuring is an issue that is germane to speak up the way the ACF used to speak on some national issues”.

He said the essence of legislature is to strengthen constitutionality and the rule of law, by making laws for good governance, urging them not to derail from this norm

“Don’t enact laws that will be antithetical to the 1999 constitution, because it remains the grand norm. Make sure you make laws that will promote peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

“We are not also unmindful of the doctrine of separation of powers. But you must cooperate with the executive to make Ekiti greater than it is”, he advised.

Congratulating the elected individuals, Omoleke said the 2019 elections were largely successful due to ICT innovations introduced by INEC national Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu.

“Prof Yakubu brought series of innovations into the electoral system. He had moved the conduct of elections from analog to digital level and this was novel in the history of our country.

“Part of his innovation was the way accreditation and voting was being done simultaneously.

Agboke urged the elected officials not to downplay the dreams, feelings and expectations of their constituencies and electorate in general who risked their lives and sacrificed their comfort and shunned intimidation to cast the votes for the eventual winners.

He said: “Let me admonish the elected officials not to downplay the dreams, feelings and expectations of their constituencies and the electorate in general. The voters, in some cases, risked their lives, sacrificed their comfort, shunned intimidation and harassment to cast their ballot for you.

“You cannot afford to disappoint them. Always have it at the back of your minds that 2023 is around the corner. Elections are designed to renew or withdraw mandate.

“Presently, arising from the general elections in this state, we have a total of 17 petitions before the Oyo State Election Petition Tribunal.  The breakdown is four Senatorial and 13 House of Representatives petitions.

    INEC: Enugu polls exceptional

The national leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commended the peaceful and successful conduct of the general elections in Enugu State, describing it as one of the best in the country.

The electoral umpire added that the exercise in Enugu State, unlike in some states, witnessed no case of “violence, snatching of ballot boxes or all sorts of electoral malpractices”.

The INEC commendation was made by the National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, during the presentation of certificates of return to Governor Ugwuanyi and others.

Okoye, who congratulated the recipients, on behalf of the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for their victory at the polls, explained that the exercise “is a formal statutory and confirmatory process that you have won an election in accordance with the constitution and electoral dictates”.

He also congratulated “in a very big way, the people of Enugu State for taking ownership of the electoral process and driving it in a very peaceful and conducive atmosphere that fused power and sovereignty back to them”.

Offering advice to the recipients, he said: “The sealed Certificate of Return that will be presented to you is not a trophy that marks the conclusion of your service. Rather it marks the beginning of your service to the people. The validity of the certificate rests with the people of Enugu State. It is within their constitutional mandate to renew, withdraw and or elevate it. The key word is service to the people”.

Kano re-run: CUPP denies plan to challenge results

A coalition of 42 registered political parties in Kano State, under the aegis of coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has dissociated itself from reports that it had concluded plans to challenge the victory of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje at the just concluded supplementary election before the tribunal.

CUPP, who visited the Kano State governor-elect, was led by its chairman, Alhaji Isah Nuhu Isah, who expressed disgust over a plan to challenge the governor’s victory.

Isah who is also the chairman, lnter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), described the position of the coalition as unacceptable, pointing out that “CUPP has distanced itself from such claims.”

“CUPP was shocked and perplexed to read the contents of the news conference discrediting the whole conduct of the process, security agencies, INEC and worst still the declaration to challenge the outcome of the exercise.

“We in CUPP comprising the representatives of the 42 political parties in the coalition, and joined by the Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), categorically disowned and disassociate the coalition from the sham press conference as well as condemn it in its entirety as it does not reflect our true assessment of the election.”

Isah also explained that the coalition was dismayed by the action of the conveners of the news conference for using the coalition to express personal and untoward views for whatever reasons and influence under the guise of CUPP.

He noted that the coalition monitored the supplementary election in Kano and in all sincerity believed it to be free, fair and peaceful, but acknowledged that there were pockets of violence in some polling units.

Ganduje wondered why only the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) faulted the re-run election while it was not the only party that participated.

“Why is PDP crying more than the bereaved, are they hiding some mischievous anti-Kano mission?”

Ganduje promised to run an all-inclusive government, which would be anchored on unity, where members of other political parties will be embraced.
