  • Police arrest man for allegedly robbing, killing own brother in Ekiti

The police in Ekiti have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly killing his own brother.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Amba Asuquo, who announced this in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, said that the suspect also stole a motorcycle belonging to his victim.

Asuquo spoke while parading the alleged killer and 24 other suspects for various criminal offences at the police headquarters.

The commissioner alleged that the suspect, who hailed from Jege in Kogi, killed his brother with  a knife and a long screw driver on Aug. 29.

He said the suspect with three others now at large invaded the victim’s house at Abe Cocoa area, Okeila, and stabbed him to death.

After allegedly killing the victim, the commissioner said the suspect went away with his Bajaj motorbike marked  Ekiti ADK 100 UJ.

He said that the knife and long screw driver as well as the motorcycle had been  recovered from the suspect.

“They hit him in the stomach and pierced his intestine when his wife and children were not at home,” he said.

Asuquo also alleged that the attackers drove a long screw driver into the deceased’s skull while struggling to rob him of the motorcycle.

Also recounting to newsmen how his brother was killed, the suspect,  who decribed his brother as stingy, said he only hired his friends to help him collect money from the victim.

“I did not really follow them inside the room, but upon realising that my brother had been stabbed and was shouting , I then rushed in and wanted to rescue him but he bit me and chopped off my finger.

  • Fayemi’s wife escapes death, as FUOYE students allegedly attack convoy

Some yet-to-be identified student of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti on Tuesday evening allegedly attacked Ekiti State First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi’s convoy on her return from a tour of some local government.

The students allegedly barricaded the Oye-Ikole-Abuja highway to prevent the convoy of the wife of the governor from passing with a view to vent their anger of poor power supply in the town.

The students were said to have engaged the security operatives detailed with the governor’s wife in a violent clash with some vehicles on the convoy, including that of the security operatives were burnt and two pump rifle seized.

The Nation learnt that Mrs Fayemi was sandwiched by some whiskers in a commando-like manner through a marked white hilux van for safety.

She was whisked away through Ayegbaju Ekiti with civil servants, journalists and policemen on her entourage were severely injured.

The students were said to have gone on rampage few hours after they have protested against incessant power outage.

Ikechukwu explained that the students protested in the morning and blocked the Ifaki-Ikole-Omuo highway and prevented free flow of vehicles.

“The students did not allow vehicles to move freely and they vandalized the property of Benin Electricity Distribution Company .

“When police went there to dialogue with them, they resisted them. And the wife of the governor who went on local government tour ran into the barricade mounted on the road.

“The students were reported to have been violent destroying cars and smashed the windscreens of vehicles.

“We want to warn that the command won’t tolerate hooliganism under any guise. We want to assure the public that the police are on top of the situation and our people must go about their normal businesses”.

  • Insecurity: IG relocates to southwest

Giving a bite to his order on security in the Southwest, Inspector-General Mohammed Adamu, will spend this week in the Southwest geo-political zone.

He will fine tune his plans to secure the region which has also been grappling with kidnapping and other forms of criminality.

On Thursday, the IG ordered that police helicopters be deployed in the region and the Northwest to comb the forests and conduct aerial surveillance.

The helicopters are to patrol major highways and forests in the zones where killings, kidnapping for ransom and armed banditry have instilled fears in the minds of residents.

During his tour of the six states in the Southwest, the IG is expected to unveil a new security architecture for the region.

The Nation learnt last night that Adamu will arrive in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, today ahead of the security stakeholders meeting billed to hold at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan, Ibadan.

It was gathered that the IG will explain how the police plan to contain insecurity in Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos and Ekiti states before the governors and other stakeholders.

The police plan to use their Helipad in Ondo and the Police Air Wing in Lagos to launch the air patrol in the region, it was learnt.

The region’s governors at a summit in June proposed the establishment of a regional security outfit codenamed Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) .

The outfit, which would have its members drawn from local hunters, the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and vigilance group, will work with traditional rulers for effective community security.

Also, the police chief, it was gathered, will inspect facilities, address personnel in Oyo state before proceeding to Osun State for a visit to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

The IG will be in Ekiti and Ondo states on Thursday while Ogun and Lagos will host him on Friday.

It was gathered that Adamu will also hold talks with traditional rulers.

He will also assess the implementation of the directive on the deployment of helicopters for aerial surveillance he gave last week.

The Lagos Police Command has commenced the deployment of two helicopters daily to survey the riverine (creeks) and hinterlands especially border communities like Epe, Isawo and Warewa to ward off militants/kidnappers.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations (DCP) Mohammed Ali, the command started the practice long before the directive of the IG.

Ali said: “The command has been engaging in aerial surveillance long before the directive and so, what we are doing now with the instruction is to ensure we sustain it. We deploy two helicopters each day for aerial patrol and they cover the length and breadth of the state.

“One goes as far as Badagry. They pay more emphasis on areas that are not easily accessible like the creeks so that information is passed across should any grouping of militants or kidnappers, is sighted.

“The state government is providing the fuel for the patrol and so, I cannot say we really have challenges in that regard.”

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie said his Command was ready for the kick-off of the aerial security surveillance as ordered by the IG.

Spokesman Femi Joseph a Superintendent of Police (SP) said: “As a command, we are appreciative of this gesture, and most especially for granting Ondo State, the base for the security surveillance in the Southwest”.

In Ekiti and Ogun states, measures have been taken to provide security.

The aerial surveillance of the state with helicopters by the operatives of the Air Police began about a month ago, it was learnt.

“A week hardly passed without the chopper being sighted flying across communities in the state, scanning around from the air for any suspicious gathering, movement and objects and relaying the intelligence to the Police Command”, a villager told The Nation.

An Ogun resident and trader at the Lafenwa Market, Abeokuta, Mrs. Noimot  Ajasa, told our correspondent that she saw a chopper hovering over the market area last week.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun in one of his security briefings acknowledged the deployment of the aerial surveillance chopper by the police and identified it as having played key roles in the rescue of five persons, including a deaconess with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Confirming the operation of aerial surveillance, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Asuquo Amba, said the new development has been helping the command to monitor forests used as criminals’ hideout with the capabilities of recording and transmitting report to the base.

He said: “I believe with this aerial surveillance we would be able to track, preempt and prevent the over-bearing influence of bandits, kidnappers and killer in the state.

“There are thick forests in the state and that is the advantage some of the criminals are using because some of the places cannot be easily penetrated.

“It is working with our capability. The whole essence of the whole thing is to take crime fighting to the criminals instead of waiting for them to strike.

“So, with this development the days of criminal elements in the state are numbered. It will be advisable for to them engage in better job rather than criminalities because nobody we escape the wrath of law.

“And I can assure you that with the plan the western states are making to launch their own security architecture and aerial surveillance both will complement each other to stamp out kidnapping, banditry and killing in the region.”

But no aerial patrol has been seen in Osun State. The police in the state declined to speak when contacted.

  • Governors discuss update on NFIU guidelines, SDGs, others

The issue of Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU)  guidelines on Local Government Funds tops agenda as the Governors of the 36 States of the Federation meet.

The governors under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) are currently meeting to discuss the update of  NFIU. The meeting is presided over by Governor, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state, NGF Chairman.

The NFIU had in May stopped the governors from tampering with the monthly allocations of the local government areas in their states.

The NFIU had announced a ban on transactions on state and local governments joint accounts, arguing that such accounts are only transitional accounts from where funds should go directly to the accounts of local governments.

The NFIU had also placed a limit on cash withdrawals from local governments accounts to a maximum of N500,000 per day. It had warned banks to ensure strict compliance.

The NFIU, which was excised from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), set June 1, 2019, as the takeoff date of the new order.

The governors had described as illegal the NFIU’s ban on transactions on state and local governments joint accounts, arguing that such accounts are only transitional accounts from where funds should go directly to the accounts of local governments.

  • At 101, philanthropist still impacts lives

With life expectancy in Nigeria pegged at 45, it may sound outlandish to see a woman who has gone through all life’s stages still kicking at 101. One of such is Chief Mrs. Rachael Adefunke Wellington. As a philanthropist, she is as passionate about life as it obtained when she was in her 20’s and 30’s. OYEBOLA OWOLABI reports that her passion to see Nigeria work again keeps her going

    Early years

Dr Princess Rachael Adefunke Wellington was born in 1919 at Ijero-Ekiti, Ekiti State. Her father was the late Elepe of Epe, Oba Arowolo II and her mother was Princess Tinuola Arowolo of Ekiti State.

    Education

She had her primary education at Ijero Righteous School, Ijero Ekiti State, after which she proceeded to Grade II Teachers’ Training College in Osogbo, Osun State. Later, she attended the University of Benin (UNIBEN) where she studied Political Science between 1975 and 1977. Fate presented to her the opportunity to travel to America where she attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. There, she continued with Political Science as her course of study.

    Early business

She established Wellington Oil Refinery and Petrochemical in Houston Texas, the United States of America which she ran till she returned home in 1994 after retiring from the US to set up Fassey Royal Airline in 1994. The airline transmuted to Trans Africa World Airline in 2010. She was the first woman airline operator in Nigeria and Africa.

    Marriage and children

She was married to the late Chief J. Wellington and they had three children–two boys and one girl. Currently, she has 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    Foundation

The establishment of Children Palm City (CPC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) was borne out of her passion for Africa as a whole. She was in the US attending the United Nations Forum for Women, and each time they talked about the poor in Africa.

So, those among them who love Africa gathered and registered a company to take advantage of the opportunity they had in America with a view to attracting international donors to help them achieve something, instead of saying Africa is poor.

The foundation began in the US in 2012, the same year it began in Nigeria. It was registered with the Lagos State government as a non-profit organisation. The main aim of the foundation is to rid the streets of poor, uneducated children.

She said: “We want to care for the orphans, street and vulnerable children of Africa, starting from Nigeria as a pilot scheme. We intend to see that every child is educated, and then ensure they do not forget their roots when they become great in life; adding that her desire is to see that every Nigerian child gets quality education and is able to contribute to the development of the African economy.

    Work

Wellington said their operations cut across the African continent, adding that as soon as they stabilise in Nigeria, they will move to other African countries.

“We began on May 27 Children’s Day. After getting approval from the Lagos State government, we gathered the children, talked to them and their parents about our intention. We found the children ourselves as the parents were not bringing them. They were roaming the streets, so we went to their homes to investigate their real status of vulnerability. We feed, clothe, and teach them every day. Now we have about 100 children in our care in Baruwa.

“We also went to Badagry and found more than 2,000 children who have never gone to school and some with little education.

    Funding

On how the foundation is funded, she said: “The foundation is funded by me and a board of trustees. It’s not enough, but one of our objectives is to invest in agriculture to feed the children and educate them when we sell proceeds. We don’t intend to rely on the public; if they give we will take, but we intend to be self-sufficient. .

Nigerians are not givers. We are expecting big donors from overseas, and whatever we are able to get at home, we will add. But our main focus is agriculture because whether we get from the people or not, or when people who promise fail, we can fall back on our agriculture produce.

We have gotten about four hectares from the Ajero of Ijero land in Ekiti State, and about five hectares from former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola. In Epe and Lekki, we plan for fishery, and we are inviting foreign experts from Malaysia, Israel and America to help us in the agriculture business on a 50-50 joint venture.”

    Continuity

Continuity starts from the people who are managing the project now. Once the agriculture starts, and we are able to feed these children, we are satisfied. We intend to engage in all the aspects of agriculture so that we have no reason to be stranded for fund or food since we will be eating from our farm and selling the remaining to fund the children’s education.

    Secret of longevity

Commenting on her longevity, the founder of CPC said: “It is God. My father died at 75 and my mother at 74. Though I lived in America for 40 years, I take care of myself; I know what to eat and what not to eat. I engage in exercises; I jog a lot. Though I can’t jog outside anymore, I still do it inside to ensure I am fit.”

    Average daily activities

For this great centenarian, daily activities begin at 6:00 a.m., when she wakes up. She prays for two hours, have her breakfast and then business starts.

She said: “Actually the business keeps me active. When you are active, your brain and body are always at alert. I would advise retirees to be active even in retirement. I am still very strong and though the body is is getting weak, the spirit it still very strong and willing.”

    Describe your personality

On her personality, she said: “It is difficult for someone to describe himself or herself, but I know I am a good person. I am peculiarly made. Even the Bible says so. Looking at myself and what has happened around me, and what is happening now, makes me know that I am an important personality.

“There is no where I can’t go to; no one I can’t talk to. I have gone round the world meeting people. Some Americans used to ask if I am a Black-American, but I tell them I am full blooded Nigerian, born and raised in Nigeria. I am a great personality. Even when I was young, I see no man above me. We sit together and make good grades. Apart from the fact that I am a Princess, everyone likes to help me and that convinces me that I am a great person. I rate myself like the president of this country. Nobody, except God, is above me. But in all these, I respect the law.”

How would you like to be remembered?

“I would like to be remembered for what I am doing now, for helping the poor, especially women of this country, many of whom have no money to raise their standard. I want to be remembered as helping the poor, imparting the word of God to those who have not heard it before,” she said.

    To the government

She advised the government to do what God has placed in their hands without listening to gossips or criticisms, though criticism makes one to do better. So, they should try to do well. “Anybody can criticise the government but it doesn’t mean it is not doing well. I pray war will not come to Nigeria. I don’t see any coming problem that the country cannot survive; it has been surviving it and will continue to survive because Nigeria is a survivor. Developed countries went through what we are going through and they survived so we are not alone.

“The government should also give youths the enabling environment to be creative and they would do wonders. Our youths are imbued with gifts and talents, they only need the right platform to manifest their ingenuity,” she said.

  • Ekiti woos investors with ease of doing business

Ekiti State has started the implementation of policies and legislations that would create conducive environment for investors and forge a strong alliance between the government and the private sector.

Governor Kayode Fayemi, said the state was working to become one of the top three states in ease of doing business in Nigeria through implementation of relevant policies, incentives and legislations to support the growth of the private sector.

Fayemi spoke during the presentation of “Facts Behind the State Economy” at the weekend at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in Lagos. Fayemi, who doubles as Chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) was honoured with the ceremonial beating of the closing gong for the stock market.

He noted that Ekiti State that used to be number four before he left office in 2014 had moved to number 32, assuring investors that his administration is working hard to bring it back to a top three position through creation of a conducive environment for investors and businesses.

“We have also passed the Law establishing the Ekiti State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (EKDIPA).  Once the agency commences full operations, it will drive our Ease of Doing Business reforms, and provide investors with a one-stop shop to deal with investment related matters,” Fayemi said.

According to him, Ekiti State’s focus on agriculture, especially through such initiatives such as Special Agric Processing Zone (SAPZ), would not only improve the productivity of farmers, but also provide the infrastructure required for processing activities.

He said the state would at the appropriate time, seek investors for some of its existing assets as well as several Greenfield opportunities.

He pointed out that the state’s tourism assets also provide significant investment opportunities.

He added that the state’s economic and investment drives would be complemented by a clear strategy on attracting business, recreational, medical and wellness tourists to Ekiti State.

He noted that investors have started to appreciate the business-friendly disposition of his administration.

“Already, the market is responding to our approach, and we expect to close a partnership on the currently unutilised Ikun Dairy Farm, with a leading dairy company in Nigeria soon. Our belief is that Ekiti is ready for more of such investments, and we are available to answer questions on the investment opportunities that exist,” Fayemi said.

He pointed out that Ekiti State has a long history of partnership with the NSE, noting that the bond raised by the state had been fully repaid while assuring that the state would continue to partner with the Exchange to grow the economy.

He urged investors to see Ekiti State as a destination of choice for investment.

He said the security in the state has improved as the state was actively involved in inter-state collaboration with neighbouring states to get rid of criminals and bandits and end the menace of kidnapping.

“We have renewed our focus on peace and security, which is the foundation of any economic development; and started investing in developing the infrastructure required to make Ekiti State a competitive destination for business,” Fayemi said.

Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Mr. Oscar Onyema, commended the governor for his reform-minded leadership and grassroots development, which are positively impacting the lives of citizens of the state.

According to him, Fayemi’s strategies towards revitalising the agricultural, manufacturing, mining, trade and tourism sectors, which together account for 75 per cent of the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) are commendable.

He noted that the state had increased the proportion of capital spending in the 2019 budget to 44 per cent from 31 per cent in 2018; and channelled budgetary resources towards pro-growth projects including development of a land bank for the state, establishment of one-stop investment promotion centre and enterprise zone industrial clusters, widespread road constructions, electrification and information and communication technology infrastructure, rehabilitation of Fountain Hotels and commencement of Ekiti State Airport project among others.

He assured the governor that the Exchange stands ready to support the growth aspirations of the state by providing access to capital and investments.

“At the Nigerian Stock Exchange, we recognise that to build a sustainable economy for the estimated 3.5 million citizens of Ekiti State, supported by vibrant sectors, both state-owned and private sector enterprises will require access to right-sized capital. We have been longstanding partners with Ekiti State in accessing such capital,” Onyema said.

He noted that during Fayemi’s previous term in office between 2010 and 2014, the Exchange supported the issuance and listing of the N20 billion Fixed Rate Infrastructure Development Bond, which financed a number of projects including the Ikogosi warm spring redevelopment, the Ekiti Water Works construction, as well as the refinancing of high-interest borrowings by the state.

According to him, the Exchange is now more strategically positioned, having transformed into a multi-asset class exchange hub, to further support the developmental goals of Ekiti State in unlocking significant investment value through the listing of public utilities and state-owned enterprises, issuance of subnational bonds, as well as promoting the knowledge economy within the state in terms of public sector capacity building through its technology based learning management system – the NSE X-Academy.

“We have also convened key players in our capital market ecosystem – our top dealing member firms and a cross-section of our listed companies – as a way of bringing interested parties closer to the investment prospects of vibrant state economy because we realise that the ambitions of the state and the capital market are inextricably linked,” Onyema said.

  • Fayemi swears-in Alawe as chairman of traditional council

EKITI State Governor Kayode Fayemi on Thursday rebuffed the opposition by the aggrieved 17 prominent traditional rulers arising from the appointment of Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, as the chairman of the traditional rulers’ council.

The aggrieved monarchs had filed a suit at Ado-Ekiti High Court seeking the nullification of the appointment.

According to them, Fayemi contravened the Chieftaincy Law, which stipulates that the chairman can only be appointed among Alademerindinlogun/Pelupelu Obas.

They claimed in their deposition that the promotion of Alawe to Pelupelu status was political and that could not grant him the power to become the chairman of the traditional council.

As earlier vowed, the 17 aggrieved Pelupelu Obas shunned the inauguration ceremony that was attended by many first-class and other monarchs under the aegis of Majority Obas’ of Ekiti State.
