  • PDP reconciliation committee visits Ekiti

The reconciliation committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), set up by the national leadership of the party, yesterday visited Ekiti State.

Its mission was to reconcile the two factions- that of former Governor Ayodele Fayose and that of the state Chairman of the party, Mr. Makanjuola Ogundipe.

Led by Umar Damagum, the committee met the 14-member State Working Committee (SWC) at Olujoda Hotel in Ado Ekiti.

Both groups have been at war over whether the party should hold primaries or go for a consensus candidate to get its standard-bearer for the 2014 governorship election.

At the meeting yesterday were representatives of the factions, including Chief Ogundipe and his deputy, Mr. Femi Bamisile. Dr. Tope Aluko, Pastor Kola Oluwawole and Busola Oyebode represented the Fayose faction.

Damagum, who addressed reporters after the closed- door meeting, hailed the factions for accepting the conditions and for being ready to embrace peace.

He, however, refused to clarify the contentious issue of either a primary election or a consensus candidate, saying: “When the time comes, the leadership of our party will do what is right.”

Damagun added: “I am happy and confident that we are more than resolved after this meeting in Ekiti PDP to take what belongs to us in 2014.”

  • ‘Outside forces, individual interests fuelled Ekiti PDP crisis’

Former Minister of Education and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prof. Tunde Adeniran, has said “outside forces” combined with “individual interests of aspirants” fuelled the crisis in the party in Ekiti State.

Adeniran, a former Ambassador to the Republic of Germany, said the opposition capitalised on the “small cracks within the party over disagreements on the adoption of a consensus candidate” for the 2014 governorship election.

Describing the print media as “patriotic partners”, he hailed them for their objective reporting, saying: “I have followed reports in the dailies and found them a fair representation of the events as they unfold in our party.”

Prof. Adeniran spoke yesterday at a media parley in Ado-Ekiti in respect of the latest move to broker peace among aggrieved members.

The state chapter of the PDP has been enmeshed in a crisis on how its standard-bearer in the 2014 poll will emerge.

Factions have made issues out of this. They have also quarrelled over whether the party should hold primaries or go for a consensus candidate.

The matter came to a head three weeks ago when members of the factions engaged in a combat, using dangerous weapons in the early morning showdown at the party’s secretariat in Ajilosun area of Ado-Ekiti.

Agreeing to a “consensus” option, the former Minister noted that the situation in the party called for a candidate who could rise above personal ambition to ensure success in the governorship election.

He said: “At a time like this, our appeal to patriotic and selfless members of the party is to show restraint and stay focused on the noble and unifying ideas being canvassed by the party leadership. We want to take steps that will lead our party out of the wilderness into a fine pasture of scenic beauty and glorious limelight.

“I am convinced that this is not the time for members to put personal interests above the collective interests of the party as it remains a vehicle for the realisation of the legitimate aspirations of individuals.

“The reconciliation committee set up by party leadership has begun work in Abuja, but here in Ekiti, acrimonies must stop.

There is need for cohesion, temperate language, civility of behaviour and altruism in thought and in action.”

  • PDP to hold meetings on Ekiti, Anambra

The National Reconciliation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) plans to meet the party’s leaders in Ekiti and Anambra states.

A statement by Ambassador Umar Damagum yesterday in Abuja said the meetings, which will be chaired by the Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, would hold tomorrow at the Legacy House, Abuja.

Members of the state Working Committee and governorship aspirants of the party are expected at the meeting.

  • Ekiti holds summit to boost health care

Ekiti State Government has held a summit on the Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) conducted in the 16 local governments.

This is part of efforts to ensure an effective and quality health care delivery in the state.

The summit, which appraised health facilities, level of patient care management, personnel attitude and integration of the community into a health system package, also examined the established referral protocol, infrastructures as well as the availability and adequacy of equipment in the state’s health care facilities.

The programme was attended by stakeholders, including traditional rulers, opinion leaders, health workers, local government caretaker chairmen, supervising councilors for health, medical officers for health at the 16 councils, officers in charge of the existing 65 health facilities in the state as well as medical record officers in the facilities.

Speaking at the summit, the Deputy Governor Prof. Modupe Adelabu stressed the vital role of the local government in the provision of an effective health care delivery.

Mrs. Adelabu, who was represented by the Special Adviser in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Bamitale Oguntoyinbo, noted that the local government is the closest tier of government to the people, stressing that the task of ensuring free quality health care delivery should not be left in the hands of the government alone.

The Deputy Governor, however, assured that the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration would leave no stone unturned in its quest to ensure the provision of a free and accessible quality health care delivery to the indigenes.

  • Ekiti PDP factions clash again

    Ekiti PDP factions clash again

The crisis rocking the Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worsened yesterday, with the reported clashing of two factions at the secretariat in Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti.

Some factional members led by the Publicity Secretary, Pastor Kola Oluwawole and Dr. Tope Aluko, who met reporters, said the hoodlums, allegedly sponsored by a top official of the party, attacked Deolu Aluko, the treasurer and others.

Those also reportedly attacked were the Awo-Ekiti Ward Chairman, Alhaji Azeez Akanbi, Mr. Agboola Olajide and Mr. Alake Abiodun.

A statement read by Oluwawole said: “The violence violates the decision of the Southwest PDP and the national leadership that peace should be maintained pending when the five-man committee set up by the Southwest Exco would visit Ekiti to intervene.”

Sixteen PDP governorship aspirants yesterday declared their consent for the adoption of a consensus candidate for the party for next year’s poll.

The group, through a communiqué issued at the end of an inaugural meeting, also supported the indefinite suspension of former Governor Ayo Fayose and others for their alleged involvement in the violence, which rocked the party a few weeks ago.

They urged the leadership of the party to put measures in place to confirm Fayose’s suspension, adding that “consensus arrangement would produce a quality and marketable candidate with wide acceptability.”

At the meeting were Chief Abiodun Aluko, Senator Bode Olowoporoku, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (rtd), Senator Ayo Arise, Aribisala Adewale, Otunba O. O. Akerele, Prof. Adesegun Ojo, Dare Bejide, Femi Bamisile, Odeyemi Tunji and Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

Others are Mr. Bodunde Adeyanju, Chief Obafemi Peters, Ropo Ogunbolude, Bimbo Owolabi and Dr. Kunle Afolayan.

Fayose described the group as “mere conspirators”.

His supporters, led by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Pastor Oluwawole, the Secretary, Dr. Tope Aluko and the Treasurer, Mr. Deolu Aluko, decried the 16-member list.

According to them, “most of the names are unknown to the party going by the requirements that would qualify anybody as an aspirant.”

Oluwawole said many of the people whose names were mentioned were also officially unknown to officials of the party and had never visited the secretariat since the present leadership assumed office last year.

Ogundipe told reporters that the constitution of the party “is clear on the process of disciplining errant members.”

According to him, the only three members of the party in the state, who could be suspended by the local chapter of the party, include “my humble self as the state chairman, members of the Board of Trustees, Senator Clement Awoyelu and the member representing the state at the zonal level, Temitope Ademiluyi.”

He said: “These people are the only ones subject to discipline at the national level of the party.”

Added he: “As at the last count, we have 23 aspirants in the party and one wonders why it is only one (Fayose) that faults every step taken by the leadership of the party.”

  • Rapist jailed 8 years for defiling 12-year-old

Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye  of a High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on Friday jailed a casual labourer, Innocent Eze  for eight  years for raping a twelve-year-old girl.
Eze,  an indigene of Nsukka, Enugu State, bagged one year for indecent assault and seven years for the defilement, the two counts which, according to the judgment were contrary to Sections 360 and 218 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Justice Adekanye, in his judgment, recalled that the convict, on August 31, 2011, in Ijan-Ekiti, had seized the young girl who had just assisted him to fetch water from a well, threw her onto his bed  and raped her.
He, according to the judgment, later stuffed a handkerchief in the violated girl’s private part when blood started oozing out after the act and also gave her N100 to “buy drugs.”
The judgment read in part: “This is definitely a barbaric act and the sentence must be such as would serve as deterrent to the convict and others who still harbor similar tendencies.
“Accordingly, my sentence on the convict is that he is sentenced to 1 year imprisonment in count 1 and he is also sentenced to 7 years imprisonment in count 2. Terms are concurrent.”
Justice Adekanye said: “It’s unfortunate that a 12-year-old girl would have been sexually defiled as was done to the victim in this case. It is more unfortunate that the matter came to the public domain.
“The convict by his act had succeeded in placing a stigma on the person of the victim, which may take a long time to erase. The trauma suffered by the victim is definitely such as would take a longer time to forget.
“The act of the convict is not such as should be encouraged. This is definitely a barbaric act and the sentence must be such as would serve as deterrence to the convict and others who still harbour similar tendencies.”

  • Ekiti PDP suspends Fayose, others

    Ekiti PDP suspends Fayose, others

Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis deepened yesterday, with the suspension of ex-governor Ayo Fayose and three other executive members for their alleged roles in last week’s bloody clash at the party secretariat in Ado-Ekiti.

Also suspended are: Secretary of the Party, Dr Tope Aluko, Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Oluwawole and Women Leader, Mrs Busola Oyebode,

The party has been embroiled in crisis over who will be its torch bearer in next year’s governorship election.

State party chairman Makanjuola Ogundipe said the State Working Committee took the decision “having found them culpable of anti-party activities and acts of insubordination.”

Ogundipe explained that “the PDP is a disciplined party and would not tolerate any act of indiscipline from any of its members, no matter how highly placed.”

According to him, last week’s attack on the PDP Secretariat was “unwarranted, irresponsible and most uncalled-for, looking at the efforts we have made to ensure everyone within the party is given a sense of belonging.” “When President Goodluck Jonathan speaks, it becomes law. Consensus is part of the ways of doing this in democracy. But the consensus is not going to be an imposition. PDP as a party that believes in internal democracy, so we are not going to impose any candidate. The consensus arrangement would be done in such a way that everyone would be carried along and given a sense of belonging”.

In respect of his suspension by seven members of the SWC for purported “high handedness and corruption”, Ogundipe noted that “those who claimed to have suspended me lack the power to do so according to Section 21(9) of the party’s constitution”, adding that “only the National Executive Council of the party can suspend me.”

He added: “Anybody sitting in Ado Ekiti and saying he has suspended me must be a huge joker. Only the National Executive Council can suspend me in line with section 21(9) of the PDP

    Constitution.

“Where did they derive their powers. It is either those people are mischievous or ignorant of the Constitution. Our National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur still recognises me as the authentic Chairman of PDP in Ekiti”.

Fayose faulted his suspension which he described as “an ignoble news.” Director of Media of the Fayose Campaign Organisation Idowu Adelusi, told reporters on telephone: “you don’t suspend from the top (state level) but from below (ward level).

He said: “It is news to us. It is an ignorable news. Ogundipe is not a member of Fayose’s ward. He cannot do that.

“You can only suspend from the ward level. Suspending Fayose from the PDP is like suspending PDP from Ekiti. Ogundipe must learn from the past. Fayose is an institution in Ekiti politics and it will be funny for anybody to suspend him from the party.”

  • Why I want to govern Ekiti, by aspirant

Former Ekiti State Deputy Governor Adebisi Omoyeni, has kicked off his aspiration to contest the governorship of the state in the 2014 election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He unveils his mission to Assistant Editor DADA ALADELOKUN.

“My mission for our dear state, Ekiti, is to take it to a level it has not attained since, its creation 17 years ago.” With this statement, former Deputy Governor Adebisi Omoyeni disclosed why he yielded to pressures “by lovers of genuine development of Ekiti”to run for governorship in the coming election.

He added: “I also have a vision of putting Ekiti State on the world map of industrialised states and make it self-sufficient and economically viable.

“I realised that our people had been suffering from acquired poverty in the midst of plenty. God has endowed us with stupendous natural resources which if harnessed, can empower us to kill poverty in the state. Infrastructure and basic amenities like pipe-borne water, good roads, and electricity among others, are painfully in short supply. This shouldn’t be allowed to go on.”

He linked the situation to unemployment among the youths, saying: “Any right-thinking person will be touched by the level of unemployment among Ekiti youths today. I am personally touched. I have therefore developed a programme of action that would aggressively create jobs for all our youths and unemployed graduates. I will create 4,000 job opportunities annually during my tenure. I did it in Wema Bank and will do it in Ekiti State.”

Linking job creation to industrialisation, Omoyeni said: “Government has no business in business. Government would only provide enabling environment for them to strive. We will encourage entrepreneurs, both local and international, to come to Ekiti and establish industries under Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. My experience in the private sector and connections will be brought to bear in this regard. Industrialisation will be an avenue to create jobs. Our youths will be adequately trained to work in these industries.”

Maintaining that unemployment breeds insecurity, the banker-turned politician said: “Peace and security are essential for development. Our government shall take every measure necessary to ensure that residents of Ekiti, carry out their legitimate businesses in a secure atmosphere. Apart from tackling poverty through reduction in hunger, we shall support all security agencies in the discharge of their responsibilities.”

The aspirant said his administration would appraise the mineral resources available in the state and ensure they are exploited for the benefit of its people.

On education, he said that bursary and scholarships would be given to students in tertiary institutions.

“As a trained teacher myself, teachers will be highly motivated; all their entitlements, including the Teachers’ Peculiar Allowance (TPA), will be paid. No teacher will be humiliated. Rather, our administration will train and re-train them to acquire modern methods of teaching to enhance their output. Infrastructure will be provided in our schools, while our tertiary institutions will be adequately funded to attain world class status. As a former lecturer myself, I will ensure that lecturers and members of the academic community are well motivated. We shall institute a tax regime with a human face for our lecturers and other categories of government staff,” he stated.

“Our government,” he assured, “will mechanise agriculture for improved output by providing necessary equipment and enabling environment. Food-processing industries will be encouraged to process farm produce into value added products for export and local consumption.”

Saying that only a healthy population can be productive, Omoyeni promised to pay attention to health-care at all levels, with adequate attention to health institutions.

Describing civil service as an integral part of any government, he said his administration would accord civil servants their pride of place in the scheme of things, with adequate care for their rights and benefits with the ambit of available resources. “Local Government Areas shall be guaranteed their independence, and their workers shall be accorded full benefits as obtained in the state civil service. There will be no discrimination in the conditions of service at the state and council levels,” he promised, adding that “those that have been unjustly eased out of service shall have their cases reviewed and justice done.”

To Omoyeni, the party is supreme. He said: “I have demonstrated this with my total support for the current State Executive. I will create every opportunity for the party to grow stronger and maintain discipline.

“Building a new Ekiti State cannot be done by one man alone. The labour, civil servant, teachers, artisans, students, academics, farmers and professionals have roles to play. My government will motivate everybody, including Ekiti sons and daughters in the Diaspora, to partake in a new dawn for prosperity, peace and progress in Ekiti State.”

  • Ekiti to inaugurate early-child-care centres

Ekiti State Government yesterday spoke of plans to inaugurate the three mega early-child-care centres being developed in the three senatorial districts.

It said this would ensure solid educational foundation for children.

The facilities are located in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital (Central), Ikole-Ekiti (North) and Ikere-Ekiti South).

Governor Kayode Fayemi said at the inauguration of a block of six classrooms built by the Nigerian Breweries Plc at St. Barnabas CAC Nursery and Primary School, Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti that the facilities were central to having a sound education.

Represented by his deputy, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, the governor listed efficient and effective teaching force, a conducive teaching and learning environment, provision of essential instructional materials, among others as essential ingredients for a meaningful primary education.

He said the ingredients are in addition to the implementation of an approved curriculum.

Governor Fayemi said: “The present administration has built a dedicated and highly- contented teaching force with the recent approval of promotion for 1,994 teachers and the payment of Teacher Peculiar Allowance (TPA). Primary school staff vehicle/housing loans and rural teachers’ allowance of 10 per cent have been passed into law for implementation to boost the morale of teachers.”

The governor described the donation of a block of six classrooms by the Nigerian Breweries Plc as a fruitful collaboration between the private and public sectors.

He described the gesture as an indication that the efforts of the administration in the education sector are attracting the attention of corporate bodies, such as the Nigerian Breweries Plc.

Hailing the company for considering Ekiti State for such project, Governor Fayemi urged teachers and pupils to make good use of the building and the furniture provided by the firm.

He enjoined other stakeholders, including parents, guardians, faith-based organisations, financial institutions and corporate organisations to emulate the Nigerian Breweries Plc and join hands in moving education forward.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Breweries Plc, who was represented by the General Manager, Ibadan Plant, Mr. Goke Adeyemi, lauded the state for its spirited efforts at reforming and restoring the legacy and pride of sound education.

The manager said Ekiti State was famous for its intellectual leadership throughout the world because of its love for education.

He said the donation of the block of classrooms was part of his company’s contribution to the infrastructural challenges in the education sector.

Adeyemi described the intervention as a way of identifying with the feats attained by the Fayemi administration, especially in the area of education.

  • Fayemi’s wife cares for the needy…3000 on three square meals free

Fayemi’s wife cares for the needy…3000 on three square meals free

The new lease of life being enjoyed by the aged, widows, HIV/AIDS patients and other vulnerable citizens in Ekiti State has continued with the introduction of Soup Kitchen by the wife of the state governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi through her Ekiti Development Foundation (EDF).

Under the Soup Kitchen plan, the needy are fed three times a day three days in a week.

It boosts the subsisting freebies introduced by the government. Such freebies include payment of a monthly N5,000 to the aged from 65 years, consistent free medical missions for all categories of residents in the state, free healthcare for children under five years, the aged over 65 years, expectant mothers and indigent disabled persons.

The feeding plan started with 200 persons, with beneficiaries accessing meals across centres in Ado-Ekiti, Osi, Itapa, Emure, Aramoko and other centres across the state. Now, there are 3000 persons benefitting from the programme.

The Soup Kitchen follows closely on the heels of the Food Bank launched in October 2012 through which well over 3,000 selected individuals had been accessing raw food materials at centres located in Ado-Ekiti and other locations in the state, according to Erelu Fayemi, EDF founder.

The governor’s wife said the EDF spearheaded the food bank and soup kitchen as part of its contributions to the administration’s resolve to banish poverty and extreme hunger from the state.

Said she at the soup kitchen launch: “The target of the current administration is to ensure that every family secures access to free nutritious meals a minimum of nine times every week. This is not just a dream, it is a goal towards which we are working.”

On the soup kitchen, the EDF is collaborating with the Centre for Family and Reproductive Health Initiative (CFRHI), a non-governmental organisation, founded by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development and Gender Empowerment, Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi.

The governor’s wife said the ultimate target of the initiators is to ensure that the soup kitchen is replicated in each of the 177 wards of the state before the end of the year.

She is optimistic that the target will be achieved if indigenous people of the state residing at home or in the Diaspora, as well as political appointees in the state, support the initiative.

The Deputy Governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, and some top female officials of the state were with the governor’s wife as she spoke during the launch of the feeding plan.

The beauty of the soup kitchen, as noted by the governor’s wife, is the decision by some of the beneficiaries with catering background to cook the foods and serve as volunteers in each centre.

“This will erase any suspicion about the quality and safety of the food. We don’t want political opponents to turn round and say that there is something else to the initiative. “That is why those who are cooking and serving are among those eating it,” Fayemi’s wife said.

She said the introduction of the soup kitchen was in fulfilment of some of the electioneering promises of the governor when criss-crossing the nooks and cranny of the state for votes.

She thanked organisations and individuals that have contributed to the success of the projects so far and sought further support.

She urged all political office holders in the state to ensure the establishment of at least one soup kitchen in their ward to take government nearer to the people at the grassroots.

In her remarks, Prof. Modupe Owolabi said the initiative was the begining of good things that the people of the state have longed for.

She described the project as an imitation of best practices in the developed world, adding that the government was proud of the efforts of the governor’s wife towards giving the people a new lease of life.

She appealed to the people of the state to continue to support the administration to enable it to deliver more dividends of democracy to them.

The founder of the CFRHI, Dr Richie-Adewusi thanked the state government for its giant strides aimed at ensuring that the people enjoyed the presence of government in their localities.

She urged the volunteers in charge of the soup kitchen not to divert the food, whether raw or cooked, and to treat the beneficiaries with love and care.

Two of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Margaret Abegunde in Ado-Ekiti and Mrs. Bosede Folorunso in Emure, lauded the initiative and prayed for the continued success of the administration.

Abegunde said: “I collect N5000 monthly from the government. I enjoy free health services and now free meal. Fayemi and his wife are taking care of the aged and my prayer is that they will age gracefully.

“I’m short of words because none of us enjoying these freebies have ever been asked to produce any political party card before we benefit. I’m close to 90 years and I can say this is the first time I’m seeing this type of thing.”

The governor’s wife also recently supported nearly 200 individuals across families with various sums totalling N11 million direct financial empowerment and individuals in the state. However, what made the event tick was the flavour of the so-called minority groups including the Ibo, Hausa-Fulani, Urhobo and Ebira who took prominence among the list of beneficiaries.

All the beneficiaries of Erelu Fayemi’s assistance however shared just one common attribute: they all needed material and financial assistance, reached out to her office and succour came their way.

Many among the 190 beneficiaries who spoke to the nation were lost in words when a total of their accumulated four-month largesse were handed over to them one after the other in sum which totaled N11 million.

One of the beneficiaries, an Igbo trader in the state, Mrs. Irene Obasi, was full of praises for the governor’s wife on her efforts at supporting people of the state, irrespective of their political or ethnic backgrounds.

She noted: “I would have made my request last year but I was discouraged by people who said I was Igbo. I was to discover late that the Igbo were among those who benefitted that same year.  I thank the governor’s wife for not discriminating among the people of the state and for offering good leadership to all communities in the state. May God continue to bless you, Ma.”

The beneficiaries included widows, orphans, multiple birth mothers, students and those seeking assistance to offset medical bills or start businesses.

At the ceremony, the governor’s wife said she would continue to use her position and networks to empower the people and enhance their well-being.

She explained that the four-month accumulated disbursement was delayed due to the death of the former Deputy Governor, Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka, an incident she said plunged the state into mourning.

The First Lady assured the people of the state of her avowed commitment to sustained financial assistance through her office and EDF, but admonished beneficiaries to make judicious use of the money, urging them to ensure they commit the given sums on whatever they might have planned, with a special prayer for the sick among them to get well quick.

The governor’s wife used the opportunity to urge the beneficiaries and well-wishers of the Dr. Kayode Fayemi-led administration to continue to disseminate information about its unprecedented achievements, saying “we give assistance not on the basis of political r religious affiliation. Christians have access to my office as much as Muslims. Whoever genuinely approaches my office for succour would surely find one.”

She however added it would be improper and possibly look like being ungrateful for those benefitting from the different life-changing programmes of the administration to keep silent while detractors run down and talk ill of the government.

She said: “Let me encourage all of us here to tell others about this programme. The more people we can make happy and restore smiles to in whatever way, the more successful the administration of Governor Fayemi. We should also endeavor to speak the truth to people whenever the enemies of the administration deliberately misinform the public in respect of Governor Fayemi’s many laudable and life-changing programmes.”

Just as I told our Igbo mothers on their Igbo Day recently, the programmes of my office and that of EDF are not for only the Yoruba or Christians alone. It is for those who lack a definite source of income. Once you come Younwill be asked questions to ascertain how true your claims are. We will definitely reach back to you wherever you come from or your religious/political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the wife of the governor also recently led advocacy visits of the members of Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Law Management Committee to the Ekiti state University (EKSU); the State Judiciary. She equally visited the Ministry of Justice as well as the Ekiti state Police Command in the drive to ensure zero tolerance for gender violence in the state.

Erelu Fayemi Fayemi, who is also the Chairperson of the Management Committee said the reason for the visits was to build partnership with all relevant stakeholders including government agencies to combat all forms of violence against women.

She added that working with stakeholders will enable women have a better grasp of the situation on ground and the plight victims of violence and ensure that response to the law against gender violence was adequate.

Erelu Fayemi, who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Social Development and Gender empowerment, Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi, said the committee, will not leave any stone unturned to ensure that violence against women and girls became a thing of the past in the state.

At the Ekiti state University, the governor’s wife commended the university community on the various steps it had taken against some students and even lecturers found violating women.

She further gave kudos to the university for establishing GBV support club in the school which would make students and lecturers work side by side to address the issue of violence against women.

Erelu Fayemi promised to fully support the establishment of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies being proposed by the institution. She used the opportunity to advise victims of gender violence not to be silent but to report immediately any form of violation against them in order to get justice.

The Chairperson advised administrators of higher institutions in the state to ensure that security personnel took the issue of violence against women serious and to discourage out-of-court settlement.

At the Ekiti state Judiciary and state Ministry of Justice, the governor’s wife solicited for the establishment of a gender court to operate side by side with the family court already in existence in the state.

She requested the designation of a gender court to hear and determine GBV cases as provided by section 5 of the Gender-Based Prohibition law 2011, as well as replication of the family courts in all the judicial divisions of the state. The committee also demanded that adequately trained gender sensitive court officers should be assigned to work on gender issues, as well as to ensure that gender cases were expeditiously tried.

Speaking with the state police commissioner, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, Erelu demanded the strengthening of gender desk at the police  stations by posting gender sensitive officers with adequate and continuous training.

She also request that gender cases must be charged under the Ekiti state Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Law 2011, while also calling for prompt release of case files to ministry of Justice, adding that survivors of gender violence should be given free medical treatment as provided by section 8a of the law.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Social Development and Gender Empowerment, Mrs Fola Richie-Adewusi urged all hands to be on deck to address the challenging issues of gender violence with vigour.

The commissioner, who is also the vice chairperson of the committee, noted that government has given the committee a mandate to ensure zero tolerance for gender violence in the state, adding that government has also approved GBV support fund to assist those who have been violated to get back on their feet.

On the visit to the EKSU, Erelu Fauemi made similar appeals and called for supports of the Institution’s management in the fight against various abuses of women.

Responding to the various demands of the committee, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oladipo Aina said the university had embarked on the construction of female hostel accommodation with full security network to ensure that women were adequately protected from all forms of harassment.

He disclosed that a lecturer of the university was recently sacked as a result of violating female students and promised to meet such stern action on any staff of the institution who used their positions to harass and embarrass female students on the campus.

The VC disclosed that the University Council has approved the establishment of Centre for Gender and Development Studies to ensure that all men and women are treated fairly and equally with dignity and respect.
