    Ondo, Ekiti to collaborate on regional integration

    Ondo and Ekiti state governments are collaborating in business integration to ensure rapid and sustainable development, it was learnt yesterday.

    Ondo State Commissioner for Regional Integration and Diaspora Relations, Prince Boye Ologbese and his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Makanjuola Kareem, spoke about the collaboration in Akure, capital of Ondo State, during a stakeholders’ meeting.

    Ologbese said as the seaport is coming on board in Ondo State, it is important for Ekiti to have a dry seaport.

    He said it is a good thing that Ekiti State is also planning to have cargo airport from August, adding that it would serve as a business advantage.                

    Ologbese, who hailed 0ndo State Governor Lucky AIyedatiwa, said promotion of tourism in the region through a smart city tagged: ‘Green Economy Initiative Project”, will open the region to the world.

     The commissioner said there was the need to step up to have common data within the Southwest, “especially now that Amotekun is fully working”, noting that they are to issue identity cards to farm users and operators before accessing farm areas in order to separate criminals from genuine farmers.                      

    0logbese also stressed the need to have security trust fund in the region to strengthen security.

    He added that they are to use security to guard the border markets, stressing that with the high cost of food commodities, the two states will work on border markets.

    Ekiti State Commissioner for Regional Development and Inter-governmental Affairs, Dr. Makanjuola Kareem, noted that the collaborative discussion is on how to move Ekiti and 0ndo states forward.

    He appreciated governors of the two states for trying to checkmate menace of criminals, saying through collaboration, insecurity would be tackled headlong.

    The commissioner said Ekiti and 0ndo states have many things in common, noting that many of the citizens contribute to the economy of both states as well as the region.

    He said it will be very nice if roads are in good condition so that goods can be easily moved from the seaport to the dry port, adding that if both sea and cargo ports work together, it will be a great benefit to the region and the country in general.

    Ekiti pledges more support for business owners

    Ekiti state government has reiterated its commitment to continually support and encourage business owners in the state to grow.

    The commissioner for information, Taiwo Olatunbosun said the government would not relent in its efforts to provide financial support, enabling environment, and incentives for businesses to grow because of their positive impact on the state’s economy.

    Olatunbosun spoke at the second edition of Eventpreneurs Summit organised by Smylnstribe held in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state capital.

    He said that Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration has put in place a series of programmes and initiatives to support the growth and survival of micro, small, and medium-scale businesses in the state.

    Acknowledging business owners as the key contributors to the state’s economic growth and wealth creation, Olatunbosun said that the government would continue to provide more innovative opportunities for improved productivity.

    He lauded the convener of the summit, Adebimpe Eweje for organising the programme, saying the initiative aligned with Governor Oyebanji’s shared prosperity agenda.

    He called on the participants to utilize the platform provided by the summit to build robust business connections and broaden their knowledge on how to grow their brand in the events industry.

    Eweje said that the summit was primarily organized for various vendors in the event industry including event planners, caterers, event decorators, and traditional Alagas.

    She noted that the summit had become a veritable hub shaping the future of young individuals in the industry and building strong networking for robust business connections.

    Ekiti rejects TCN’s, BEDC’s planned two-month power outage

    Ekiti State Government has rejected the proposed plan by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to put the state in blackout for nine hours daily for two months effective from July 1.

    The government said the planned power outage amounts to unacceptable economic, financial and social price to be paid by the citizens.

    TCN and BEDC had in notices announced that TCN’s schedule to carry out maintenance work on the 132kV Akure Osogbo transmission line would involve installation of Optical Ground Wire and other activities requiring outage on the affected network for safe working space.

    TCN and BEDC had stated that the maintenance would be between July 1 and August 31 and that there would be power outage in Ondo and Ekiti states for nine hours from 8am daily throughout the period.

    But, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utility, Prof Bolaji Aluko, said government was not informed or was approval sought and obtained from the Ekiti State Electricity Regulatory Bureau, saddled by law with the authority to regulate the electricity industry in Ekiti State.of Mathematics, English language and science subjects for career in ICT, Engineering and Medicine.

    21 suspected armed robbers, cultists arrested in Ekiti

    The Police Command in Ekiti State has arrested 21 suspects in connection with the recent killings and other crimes in the state.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that four persons, including a commercial motorcycle ticket agent, were recently killed by gunmen at various locations in Ado-Ekiti.

    The command’s spokesman, DSP Sunday Abutu, told reporters yesterday in Ado-Ekiti that the suspects were arrested following discreet investigation by the command.

    The spokesperson for the command said the suspects were arrested for alleged armed robbery and cultism.

    Abutu explained that the suspects were members of different cult groups who killed people in the state as reprisal attacks within their confraternity.

    He said a police investigation indicated that one of the suspects is a member of the ‘Eiye Confraternity.’

    Abutu said further investigation also led to the arrest of several other suspects, including members of a notorious cult gang, who allegedly came from Plateau State to take part in the act.

    Ekiti suspends head teacher over illegal levies collection

    Ekiti state government has sanctioned the head teacher of Saint Philips CAC Nursery and Primary School, Erio-Ekiti, Adeniyi Ayodele over the collection of illegal charges levies.

    The executive chairman of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Prof. Femi Akinwumi disclosed this in a statement in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital.

    Akinwumi said that Ayodele was relieved of his post for two months following Ayodele’s confession that he committed the infraction levelled against him.

    He said the suspended teacher’s action contravened the free and compulsory education policy of the Governor Biodun-led administration in the state.

    He revealed that evidence proved that Ayodele was collecting N25,000 from each pupil in primary six while another N8,000 was being collected from each of the primary four pupils.

    Akinwumi said the punishment was necessary to serve as a deterrent to other Head Teachers in public primary schools who are fond of breaching government policies

    He directed the head teacher to hand over to the most senior assistant head teacher who should be reporting at the SUBEB headquarters pending further determination of the case.

    Ekiti promotes livestock production

    Ekiti State Government has declared its readiness to invest in livestock production, to enhance food security and stimulate economic growth.

    Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, said this yesterday in Ado-Ekiti at the training of community livestock service providers in good husbandry practices, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).

    Boluwade said the government decided to leverage on the opportunities in livestock industry not only to increase self-sufficiency in animal products, but also to promote proper nutrition and create jobs.

    The commissioner, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Olugbenga Odesanmi, said participants  are expected to utilise the L-PRES initiative to contribute to Ekiti food security and economic growth.

    Boluwade noted that the training would strengthen and broaden their knowledge of animal husbandry practices, bridge the gap in livestock production as well as improve livestock value chains.

    The L-PRES State Project Coordinator, Mr Adedipe Olayinka, said the World Bank-funded project is aimed at enhancing livestock production through an effective value chain strategy that provides jobs and creates wealth.

    He said the community service livestock providers would work with the local farmers to boost food production and enhance economic growth.

    Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal University of Technology, Oye-Ekiti, Mr Kayode Ojo has condemned the rising wave of insecurity and the unwarranted killings in Ekiti State.

    Speaking through his media aide, Deji Aiyelabowo, Ojo described the situation as senseless, scary, cruel, and barbaric.

    He urged security agencies to do everything possible to fish out the real killers and make them face the wrath of the law.

    The former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in the state said the “seeming helplessness of the Police in crime control and prevention is worrisome.”

    He said the act was not only despicable but cowardly and unpatriotic.

    According to him, he received the news of the brutal killings of three different residents of the State by some faceless and unpatriotic elements with rude shock.

    “This despicable act must be condemned by all right-thinking Nigerians, not only Ekiti residents.

    “No doubt, the few criminal elements in our society are looking for opportunities to discourage or create fear in the minds of the people in the State so that evils can flourish. We must not allow this,” he said.

    Ojo reiterated that people must not allow evil to flourish in society and called on the security agencies to rise to their responsibilities by exposing the evil elements from within.

    “Let the community fish out the criminal elements who carried out these dastardly acts and hand them over to security agencies.

    “The killers are human beings, who are supposed to be traceable. They are not spirits, hence, all efforts should be made by all who are supposed to do the needful.” 

    It will be recalled that three different souls were mowed down at different spots across Ado-Ekiti, the state capital a couple of days ago.

    A commercial motorcycle ticketer was gunned down close to the Police Divisional Office at Okesha area, a POS operator was killed at the Adebayo area and another rice hawker was murdered close to the NSCDC office at the popular Oja-Oba Market at Okesha by yet-to be apprehended persons operating on a motorcycle.

    Ekiti State Government has restated the commitment of the Governor Biodun Oyebanji-led administration to bring about all round significant improvement in the quality of lives of residents.

    Commissioner for Information Taiwo Olatunbosun spoke while featuring on a current affairs programme, ‘Bottom Line’, aired on a local radio, New Cruise FM, Ikere-Ekiti.

    He stressed the need for residents to not only support Governor Oyebanji to make life more meaningful for the people, but also key into opportunities facilitated by government to better their lives.

    Acknowledging that times are tight due to factors, including global economic downturn, low oil prices, impact of the fuel subsidy removal, high unemployment rates, inflation among others, Olatunbosun said the government had proactively activated short, medium and long term measures to mitigate the effects of the global economic downturn, stressing that Governor Oyebanji’s focus had always been to ensure the well-being of the citizenry.

    Gunmen kill motorcyclists’ ticket officer in Ekiti

    Unknown gunmen yesterday killed an officer of the Okada Riders Association, Ekiti State, Samuel Omoyajowo, in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

    It was learnt that the victim was shot in the day by two gunmen riding on a commercial  motorcycle around the popular Okesa Roundabout.

    Omoyajowo was said to have been shot moments after he asked if the gunmen had obtained a ticket for the day.

    Witnesses, who knew the victim before his death, said he was one of  the officers engaged to issue tickets to commercial motorcyclists at the roundabout.

    The witnesses said the assailants sped away after the shooting.

    People scampered for safety, as many hurriedly closed shops and offices for the fear of reprisals from members of the Okada union.

    It was gathered that the body of the victim had been deposited at the morgue of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.

    The Ekiti State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the development, said investigation into the case had begun.

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted heavy rainfall in 14 states this week.

    They are Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Taraba, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ekiti and Osun states.

    The agency said the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is expected to be strong over the West African region.

    MJO is the major fluctuation in tropical weather on weekly to monthly timescales.

    The agency explained that the strong MJO would lead to heavy rainfall.

    This is contained in the weekly weather forecast bulletin issued by NiMet yesterday.

    The forecast is valid for seven days.

    The bulletin reads: “During the week, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is expected to be strong within the week over the West African region.

    “Good moisture influx and velocity divergence are expected to enhance the prospects of heavy rainfall over parts of Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Taraba, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ekiti and Osun states.”

    The agency also highlighted some states that would experience moderate to heavy rainfall.

    “Moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated over parts of Zamfara, Kano, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra states,” it said.

    NiMet predicted low rainfall over parts of Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa and Yobe states.

    It added that the rest of the country should experience low to moderate rainfall.

    The agency warned that the heavy rainfall in some parts of the country could lead to flash floods.

    “There are prospects of flash floods on roads, bridges and low-lying areas which can disrupt vehicular traffic.

    “The public is advised to take necessary safety precautions; do not walk through fast-flowing runoff waters,” it warned.

    The agency also predicted the maximum and minimum temperature that would be witnessed by various states this week.

    It stated that the maximum temperature range of 35 – 40oC is anticipated over parts of Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe and Borno states.

    “Temperature range of 30 – 35oC is expected over parts of Kaduna, Plateau, Taraba, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states.

    “The rest of the country is expected to experience a temperature range of 25 – 30oC.”

    According to NiMet, the minimum temperature range of 15 – 20oC is expected over parts of Plateau states.

    It stated that a temperature range of 25 – 30oC is anticipated over parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe and Borno states.

    Temperatures 20 – 25oC and above are expected over the remaining parts of the country, NiMet added.
