  • Ekiti: Dawn of a glorious day

The last four years in the Ekiti State leadership had seen the worst in the nature of human conduct. Creation provides leaders with the grace to aspire to greatness by writing their names on the positive pages of history through their deeds to promote humanity for good. Or otherwise!

Call it providence or accident of history, Ekiti State since creation has seen two types of leadership that differ in orientation and morality. Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo noted for his suave, elegant and moral excellence led Asiwaju Segun Oni and Dr Kayode Fayemi to promote Ekiti virtues of hard work and honesty.

But the post-Adebayo administration in 2003 was denominated in thefts and violent crimes and at the eclipse of that regime that was eventually interred in dishonourable grave, no fewer than 20 Ekiti families had worn sackcloth to mourn the untimely deaths of their promising sons.

Fayemi, between 2010 and 2014, recorded many ‘firsts’ in development index that placed Ekiti State in a prime record of human capital development.

But, again, like a thief in the night and in a comprehensive looting scheme plotted on a raiding chart, roguery, violence and crookery crept into Ekiti State again, gnawing like a vicious rat at the soul of a hitherto serene community and, like a thunderbolt, shattered the peace and integrity of a society that once enjoyed its innocence in the maze of rolling hills with gentle slopes that define the Ekiti genius as towering in value and soft in character and morals.

Indeed, the period between October 2014 and September 2018, a period of a capital loss in integrity and fortunes in Ekiti State, was all about bad boys in government: the bandits and harlequins in a complex game of guile and hollow wits to maim, steal and kill.

It all started with an audacious and armed poll theft that went with tears and sorrow. Like a community doomed to a ceaseless banditry, no one, including the upscale and the yokels, was spared the pains of vicious raids that went with haul in loss of human dignity and material well-being.

Ekiti, like a marooned willow lost in the meadow, was forced to live apart from modernity in what looked like a solitary community of outcasts fated to sedentary living. Not only were the locals stranded in their own land as the bandits raged and raped; national and international development partners also took flight from the shenanigans of the street patron and populist manipulator who in broad smiles hawked misery among the populace in a trading post that Ekiti State had become.

The genie had his hands full with bountiful harvests that could still not fill the cistern of his lust and his victims accepted their recreation into poverty as a rare but harsh providence that went with jaded fortune; a beatification of genteel poverty in which case some Ekiti people accepted poverty as a way of life: a paradox of sorts that is difficult to explain in human sociology and psychology.

For the first time in Ekiti history and contrary to the lessons and morals of the legendary Ekitiparapo War, a people in chains and bedevilled with the callousness of a heartless leader, hailed that vicious leader as Hosanna after raising potentially productive youths on the streets as hell-raisers to threaten their own future and existence.

At the height of his success as a consummate manipulator in the killing of his people’s dreams through lies and deceits, he gleefully dubbed Ekiti people the colony of fools among his co-revellers and Ibadan comrades.

In the autumn of that regime, it was plain that poverty and hunger, the inseparable cousins of want, had crept into the living rooms of Ekiti people, as huge debts overhang of N117b threatened the very survival of Ekiti State that was also burdened with unpaid 10 month salaries and pensions, unpaid contract obligations and cloudy compensation claims to those that lost their houses to over-priced flyover and other fraudulent construction works.

As expected in a human community forced into unwanted slavery, on all four, despondency and anger crept onto the streets on July 14, calling for a change of regime. And following covert rebellion and overt challenge, a burst of emotional legato of ballot fury across the state closed the page of that fiendish regime that stole Ekiti dream at gunpoint and gang-raped her future in the most savage brutality.

The protagonist in the revolution, Kayode Fayemi, is a pro-democracy veteran and natural scourge to the survival of bad governance anywhere it exists. He led the field again with Ekiti people following and shot to victory, bringing home laurels and sceptre that have today restored Ekiti to a kingly state that hopefully will keep away the scoundrels, knaves, charlatans and demagogues from nursing the future of Ekiti people.

Fayemi prepared very well for his new assignment, for during campaigns, he reiterated his resolve to recharge his vision in the Ekiti Collective Rescue Mission (Chapter Two) by retooling his development blueprint to post better results, calling on Ekiti people to reject continuity of poverty but vote for freedom.

He reaffirmed his resolve to not only resuscitate the Eight-Point Agenda, but also promised to strengthen the agenda for a more fundamental and comprehensive development strategy to make poverty history in Ekiti land.

Not only that, after his election victory, he raised a transition committee of eminent Ekiti sons and daughters that called a stakeholders forum to a month-long brainstorming sessions on critical development initiatives and strategies for policy formulation, development and execution.

He also criss-crossed parts of the world to rally investors and development partners to help lift Ekiti State from doldrums.

As wont with audacious visionaries, Fayemi succeeded in his trips with pockets of international aid agencies promising to help rescue Ekiti State in the objectives of the Collective Rescue Mission (Two).

They included a visit to the Minister of Power, Works & Housing, Babatunde Fashola, to discuss issues relating to the ministry’s infrastructure and assets in Ekiti State and how to improve them and introduce fresh ones while at the Ministry of Interior, Fayemi sought from the Minister, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, cooperation and collaboration on security.

On August 29, Fayemi met the Managing Director of the Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), Abba Bello, in Abuja, to discuss on how to record a boom in Ekiti State’s economy through export of farm produce.

In health sector, Fayemi same day held talks with the representatives from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation led by its Managing Director, Paul Basinga. They promised to partner with Ekiti State government to develop the health sector while also seeking partnership in agricultural development partnership with AGCO South Africa (Pty) Limited.

Fayemi also sought funding opportunities in alternative sources of energy for private sector and proposed industrial clusters in the state while also seeking collaboration in a purchasing/agro-processing scheme that aims to stimulate investment through agro-processing enterprises that will create jobs.

The Governor-elect also visited the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, to seek cooperation in growing agricultural productivity and employment, especially among the youth and building on his Youths In Commercial Agriculture Development (YCAD) initiative during his first term in office.

Other issues discussed included efforts aimed at improving processing units across the value chains of crop export produce, including cocoa, coffee, cassava, rubber, cashew, and yam amongst others, including improving storage facilities for farm produce to encourage large-scale production as a way to further encourage agro investments in Ekiti State.

Fayemi, a vision, hard work and transparency devotee, is taking the driver’s seat today in Ekiti development process. Like before, he will drive safely to Ekiti destination of prosperity.

Good morning Ekiti people to the dawn of fine-tuning your history and reshaping your battered destiny for good. Today October 16, marks the beginning of the reclaiming of your land and restoration of your values, hopes and aspirations with the urbane Fayemi leading the vision.

It is an opportunity that must never be allowed to slip again into the hands of scoundrels and bandits that survive on dark intentions.

  • Fayose in tearful departure from Ekiti

Outgoing Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday bade a tearful farewell to the people after a thanksgiving service at the Government House Chapel in Ado Ekiti, the statecapital.

The service was shunned by many political office holders, who similarly boycotted Friday night’s farewell dinner. The governor’s tenure ends tomorrow when governor-elect Kayode Fayemi will take office.

The departing governor could not control his emotion as he made to depart for Akure Airport to catch a flight to Abuja.

As the thanksgiving service ended at about 11am, tears welled up in the eyes of the governor as he made his way to his white Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

“Please take heart, please take heart,”said Fayose’s wife Feyisetan, who noticed that her husband was shedding tears.

Fayose bade his wife, few aides and other admirers, farewell as his convoy headed for the Akure airport.

Throughout the service, Fayose was in pensive mood, his voice was laden with emotion as he addressed the congregation.

The outgoing governor told the congregation he was leaving the number one seat a fulfilled man.

Fayose said: “I’m contented, I’m happy and I say thank you. Don’t be disparaged, don’t worry about me, I will come back. I will rise to the glory of God. I have enjoyed uncommon grace; I will never complain but only thank God.”

Turning to former Speaker Kola Oluwawole who was removed by 14 lawmakers on Thursday, Fayose urged him to take his sack in good faith.

He said: “I don’t want you to trouble your mind; there won’t be testimonies without battles. Go and concede defeat in the overall interest of Ekiti. You were removed illegally, but let God fight for you.”

Mrs. Fayose assured that her husband would come back to Ekiti a triumphant man.

She said: “We are coming back, I don’t know how, but I have 200 per

    cent assurances.”

In his sermon titled: “Affliction shall not rise the second time,”

the Chaplain of Government House, Pastor Seyi Olusola, said a man must be ready to face affliction, if he must rise.

Olusola said: “Don’t allow anything to trouble your mind, always come to God.”

As he left the Government House premises, Fayose displayed a wooden board with the inscription: “Ekiti Kete, thank you all and good bye.”

The service was attended by royal fathers led by Chairman of Ekiti State Council of Obas and Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju and the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe.

Outgoing Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola and his wife, Janet; Chief of Staff Dipo Anisulowo; Head of Service, Gbenga Faseluka and Secretary to the State Government Mrs. Modupe Alade also attended the service.

  • Judgement time

What has a beginning must have an end,” outgoing Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose reportedly said as he gave handover notes to the Head of Service, Dr. Gbenga Faseluka, at a ceremony on October 12. He added: “History will be kind to me as a man who has given his best to the people.”

It is noteworthy that among the first appointments Fayose announced when he became governor in 2014 was “personal adviser to the governor on special duties and stomach infrastructure.” By creating this curious office, Fayose had sent a signal that his tenure would be marked by curiosities

Well, Fayose is free to say positive things about his four-year tenure, which ends today. Tomorrow, a new governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, will be sworn in. It is interesting that Fayose will not be at Fayemi’s inauguration. “I have to be in EFCC office in Abuja on Tuesday,” he told journalists at a valedictory event.  Fayose has questions to answer at the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

It remains to be seen whether History will be kind to Fayose. This is the character that reportedly went on the air to declare Prof Kolapo Olusola as the winner of the governorship election of July 14. Olusola, the deputy governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, was Fayose’s personal choice, but he needed to win the election.

While the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepared to officially announce the election result, Fayose announced on the Ekiti State Broadcasting Service (EKBS) that his choice had won the election. Olusola didn’t win. Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election. Fayose’s radio broadcast was illegal. He knew it was illegal. The information was wrong.  He knew it was wrong.

This is the character that, on December 8, 2015, made a fashion statement as well as a power statement at the Ekiti State House of Assembly. Fayose appeared at the House of Assembly to present the Appropriation bill dressed in a pair of Jeans trousers and a T-shirt. Maybe that was his idea of dressing down. But only those who don’t understand the idea of “dressing properly for the occasion” considered Fayose’s informal dressing appropriate for such a formal ceremony.

On the same occasion, Fayose reportedly grabbed the gavel and employed it to “pass” the budget he presented into law, which was an absurd violation of the concept and practice of separation of powers.

Now it is time for Fayose to leave office.  History will judge him by the things he did while he was in power, and the things he did with power. It’s judgement time.

  • Ekiti: Fayose, Fayemi’s wife, others meet in govt house

Members of the Inauguration Committee and Transition Committee set up by Ekiti State Governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, yesterday paid a working visit to the Government House in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. The visit was aimed at ensuring the success of the October 16 inauguration and comfort of eminent personalities that will grace the occasion.

Led by the wife of the governor-elect, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, the committee was received by outgoing Governor Ayo Fayose. Fayose, who received the team, restated his readiness to cooperate with the incoming administration. He disclosed that he will officially hand over the Government House on Sunday to the Head of Service, Dr. Gbenga Faseluka.

Mrs. Fayemi commended Fayose for hosting the committee noting that the visit and inspection was part of the committee’s assignment. She expressed delight at the availability of the complex to host some of the guests that will be on ground for Fayemi’s inauguration. Those on Mrs. Fayemi’s entourage included Mr. Deji Ajayi, Mr. Tade Aluko, Mr. Dapo Karonwi, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji and Mrs. Bunmi Obanise.

  • Court refuses application to stop Fayemi from dissolving council excos

An Ekiti State High Court  yesterday refused to grant an order to restrain the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, from dissolving the executives of the 16 local government councils of the state.

The council chairmen acting under the aegis of the state chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) had approached the court seeking an interlocutory injunction to stop Fayemi from sacking them.

Dismissing the application, Justice Abiodun Adesodun, described as unmeritorious, pre-emptive and speculative. Justice Adesodun said there is no compelling fact in the application to warrant the granting of the order.

The judge subsequently adjourned the substantive matter to October 22. The council bosses, who are People’s Democratic Party (PDP) members, filed the case through their lawyer, Mr. Obafemi Adewale, while Mr. Tajudeen Akingbolu and Mr. Adeoye Aribasoye appeared for Fayemi.

Counsel to the defendant (Fayemi) challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear the application on grounds that the matter was speculative.

The suit was filed owing to the impending change of government on Tuesday, October 16. Outgoing governor, Ayo Fayose, is expected to make way for the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who will be sworn into office at Ekiti Parapo Pavilion. The council chairmen were elected in the local government election conducted in December last year on a two-year tenure.

  • Fayose hands over to HOS, presides over last cabinet meeting

Outgoing Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose Friday evening handed over the instruments of office to the Head of Service, Dr. Gbenga Faseluka.

He surrendered the handover note to Faseluka at a special valedictory State Executive Council meeting at the new Governor’s Office in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Fayose said history would be kind to him the way he managed the resources in trust for the people of the Fountain of Knowledge.

That would be the last time he would preside over the cabinet meeting in his capacity as the state chief executive.

The departing governor said he would be available to answer questions on who he ruled the state anytime he is called upon to do so.

The special cabinet meeting was attended by traditional rulers, legislators, senior government officials and party leaders.

In an emotion-laden voice, Fayose said: “What has a beginning must have an end. It is not the number of years spent but the quantity and quality of achievements.

“I thank the people of the state for their cooperation and urge them to extend same to the incoming administration.

“There should never be a vacuum; our priority in Ekiti must be discharge of our duties.

“I’m a man who came, saw and conquered. I can’t finish all, I have done my best.

“History will be kind on me as a man who has given his best to the people. I will remember all for your support, I bear no grudges against anyone.”

Thanking the people of Ekiti for their support, Fayose urged them to cooperate with the incoming administration to take the state to greater heights.

Earlier, Fayose had inaugurated the new Speaker’s Lodge named after the last occupier of the state number one legislative seat, Kola Oluwawole.

Oluwawole was removed as Speaker on Thursday by the state lawmakers and was replaced with Adeniran Alagbada.

Fayose urged the deposed Speaker to see his impeachment as a “price of leadership.”

He told Oluwawole: “If I were you, in the interest of Ekiti, I will tell them to carry on. Everything works for good.”

  • Ekiti Assembly suspends 12 pro-Fayose lawmakers

… ELECT APC MAN AS NEW SPEAKER

    …SACKED SPEAKER: MY REMOVAL ILLEGAL

With barely five days to the change of government in Ekiti State, an ally of outgoing Governor Ayo Fayose, Mr. Kola Oluwawole, was impeached as the Speaker of the House of Assembly.

Oluwawole was on Thursday removed alongside the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Sina Animasaun, by fourteen lawmakers who belong to both People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC).

An APC lawmaker, Mr. Adeniran Alagbada, was elected new Speaker while Mr. Segun Adewumi, was returned to his former post of Deputy Speaker.

Minority Leader, Mr. Gboyega Aribisogan, was elected as the new House Leader of Business while former Chief Whip, Mr. Sunday Akinniyi, emerged as the new Minority Leader.

Mr. Ojo-Ade Fajana emerged as Deputy House Leader, Mrs. Cecilia Dada as Chief Whip and Mr. Musa Arogundade as Deputy Chief Whip.

The Assembly also suspended Oluwawole and eleven other lawmakers for 125 legislative days.

Other lawmakers slammed with the hammer of suspension are Animasaun, Samuel Omotoso, Wale Onigiobi, Wale Ayeni, Dare Pelemo, Samuel Jeje, Dayo Akinleye, Delete Fajemilehin, Tope Fasanmi, Tunji Akinyele and Sanya Aladeyelu.

The leadership change was effected by three APC members and eleven PDP members at a plenary attended by the Clerk, Mr. Told Esan.

Speaking with reporters after plenary, Aribisogan, the new Leader of Business, said Oluwawole and other PDP lawmakers were suspended over alleged complicity in the disappearance of N60 million in the House.

He also added that they were also slammed with suspension for ineptitude, saying they allegedly allowed the reputation of the Assembly to be destroyed by the governor with their attitudes.

Aribisogan also stated that the assembly under Oluwawole was poorly funded , became practically a subservient of the executive and the speakership position was hijacked by powerful members, owing to their closeness to the governor.

He also accused the former speaker of betraying Ekiti populace by holding a secret plenary last month with other suspended members to approve N10 billion supplementary budget sent by Fayose.

“Today, we held a plenary session which was a follow up to the parliamentary we held yesterday and we carried out changes in the leadership of the House.

“When the PDP members were busy doing the presidential primary in Port Harcourt, we were busy here strategizing on how best to make Ekiti governance for the incoming government, Dr Kayode Fayemi.

“14 members sat to carry out these changes out of which 11 are addressing this press conference. We have 26 members in this Assembly, and we needed just nine to form quorum.

“Our actions were guided by the standing orders of this Assembly and we didn’t deviate from it, so the quorum was formed and our actions were legal and constitutional”, he added.

He added that the PDP still remains the majority party in the Assembly and that those who carried out the removal did so in the overriding interest of Ekiti people.

The new Speaker, Hon Alagbada , in his acceptance speech, appreciated the members for reposing confidence in him, saying he won’t betray the confidence the trust .

“You are aware that the House has since inception of the present administration becomes the property of the governor rather than an arm of government. Ekiti State is yearning for a purposeful legislature that would be truly committed and independent to discharge its constitutional duties.

“We will no longer allow a situation whereby legislature will be pocketed or caged by the executive. Let me assure all and sundry that that we will cooperate with the governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi to move Ekiti forward.

“You will recall that the fourth assembly changed its leadership in 2014 when sme members of APC defected to PDP to facilitate the smooth take off of Mr. Fayose. So, history is only repeating itself and there is nothing extra ordinary in what we have done”

The new Speaker announced the dissolution of all statutory and standing committees of the House, urging the chairmen to hand over to their respective secretaries.

But the deposed Speaker, Oluwawole, accused the Police of colluding with the new leadership and suspected political thugs to invade the Assembly and carry out the act.

He described his ompeachment today as a rape on democracy and an a descent to lowest level of lawlessness and illegality.

Addressing reporters at the new Speaker’s Lodge, Oluwawole said the lawmakers who removed him did not meet the two-third majority.

“This is bizarre! In a democracy? This is the height of illegality and it can never stand. As the Speaker of the House, I supervised over the last adjournment of the House, which was carried out according to laws and laid down rules.

“I retain the power to reconvene the House and i have not done that yet. How then can some people say the House sat? This is totally illegal.

“The role of the police in this siege is clear. It was enemies of democracy that purported the House sat. Ekiti State House of Assembly has not been reconvened by its speaker.”

FAYOSE: I WON’T DABBLE INTO ASSEMBLY AFFAIRS

Governor Ayo Fayose in his immediate reaction to the change of leadership of the House has advised the lawmakers to put the interest of state first.

Fayose during a press conference on the State of the State said the welfare of Ekiti people should be paramount to the legislators.

He said: “The well-being and the welfare of Ekiti people is important to them whether or is Oluwawole or Alagbada.

“What is important to Ekiri people is their welfare. In the next 72 hours, I will leave and whatever it is, they are all members of Ekiti State House of Assembly.

“Whoever that they agree among themselves to be Speaker, they should work with him. Honourable members should work together for the good of Ekiti State.

“I enjoin them to cooperate with the incoming governor, Ekiti State is bigger than all of us. I won’t dabble into their affairs because whatever they sow today, they will reap tomorrow.”
