Ekiti honours contingents on National  AGILE Games’ feats

Ekiti State Government has honoured its contingents for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded National Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Games held in Abuja.

The state’s  contingents participated in six events, securing first place in  Essay Writing, second in Debate, Spelling Bee and Girls’ Basketball, third in Boys’ Basketball, fourth in Digital Literacy and Painting, fifth in Environmental and Entrepreneurial activities.

One of the standout moments of the event was the performance of Eniola Awelewa, who excelled in the painting competition despite his physical disability.

Speaking with journalists in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State AGILE Project Coordinator, Yewande Adesua, described Eniola’s artwork, titled “It Takes a Village”, as a raw, honest and profound depiction of community and belonging.

She revealed that her painting attracted national attention and earned special recognition from Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who requested that the piece be displayed in her office.

Adesua noted that Eniola’s excellence underscores Ekiti’s commitment to inclusive education, which has earned the state national recognition, emphasizing that “disability is not an inability.”

  • Season of trolls in Ekiti

    Season of trolls in Ekiti

    •  By Segun Dipe

The ship of gubernatorial election in Nigeria will soon berth in Ekiti as its next destination. Barring any last-minute glitch, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will release the election time- table that will signal the flag off of the electoral process in both Ekiti and Osun, which will come immediately after. By then, individuals will start expressing their interest in bidding for the primaries that will make them emerge as the candidate of their various parties.

We are in the season before the INEC declaration. That season in Ekiti when people will be making subterranean moves at marketing their potential aspirants and de-marketing those of others. That season when name-calling becomes the order of the day from various camps. That season when half-truth and bare faced lie-telling are bandied as the truth. In Ibadan parlance, it is called the season of leemo (haul it at him).

For starters, trolling is a technological threat to democracy. Issues like disinformation, mass surveillance, and online polarisation can undermine democratic norms and institutions. But a troll would care less about that. In online slang, troll refers to someone who deliberately posts offensive, provocative, or disruptive content to incite reactions or derail conversations. They often aim to upset others or gain attention by starting arguments or causing trouble. This behaviour can manifest in various ways, such as posting inflammatory comments, sending malicious messages, or using derogatory language.

Trolls often have no genuine purpose beyond disrupting discussions or provoking reactions. They may use offensive language, spread false information, or engage in personal attacks to get a rise out of others.

When trolls troll, they care the least about the consequences. All that matters to them is to gain an upper hand for their would-be aspirants, or rather, to bolster the confidence of a person to the point that such would see himself or herself as the best possible candidate and eventual winner of the coming elections, first the primaries, then the general.

It is observed that trolling is rough, repressive and gutterly. Rather than simply sell their principals, the trolls play the game with impunity and employ the worst of tackles. To them, it’s simply a game of thrones and they can laugh it off at the end without minding how much injury it has caused their victims. After all, as they would say, anyone who can’t endure the heat should not bother entering the kitchen.

Indeed, trolling heats up the political space. The worst guilty are those trying to snatch power for their principal. They will defy all sane reasonings to bully the person in the saddle and provoke his followers to no end, so they, the trolls, can capitalise on any retort from their victims.

The trolls in Ekiti have not performed any differently. Pretending they don’t realise that the sitting governor is entitled to another four-year term in office, they have been employing all forms of tricks to galvanise negative thoughts against Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, interpreting all his good intentions negatively and condemning all positive appraisals he is getting.

One would expect the trolling to come from those in the opposition party, but it is coming in the form of envy from those who claim to be members of the ruling party. To them, there are some forces external to the state somewhere, who would stop the governor from running a constitutionally approved second term, no matter how well the governor may have positioned himself in the consciousness of the people he is governing. If he likes, let him be garlanded with all the honours in this world, the trolls believe they can pull him down and make him look bad to the electorate.

And there is this talk of endorsement or adoption of the governor for a second term. His traducers will hear no such thing. They kept querying why anyone would dare to endorse a sitting governor for another term. It is a constitutional aberration, a heinous offence to commit, they’d say. They have argued this to high heavens. Little did they understand that they were only confusing endorsement with the campaign proper. There is nothing constitutionally wrong with any group of persons endorsing anyone for a future election. What the Constitution frowns at is for such a person to come out boldly and declare his intention to contest before the electoral umpire blows the whistle.

While the sitting governor is being endorsed by the people for a constitutionally approved second term, others with the ambition to seize power from him are brazenly declaring their intention to contest and even making barefaced pronouncements.

Talking about endorsement of a sitting governor (as with a sitting President) for a second term, the principle is enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which also outlines the roles and powers of the governor. The Party Constitution is another primary endorsing instrument. It is from these two legal documents that the people derive their powers to endorse.

As stipulated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Governors have two term limits of four years apiece. Specifically, Section 180(1) (a, b, c, d) as well as Section 180(2 & 3) of the constitution provides details of the tenure of the office of a governor and conditions that could warrant an office holder to stay longer than the four years stipulated.

In the same vein, the Constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC) allows for a governor to serve a maximum of two four-year terms. Meaning, an individual can be governor for a total of eight years.

These trolls have a way of assuming that their principals, who have never been elected into any position of authority before, would be entrusted with power to perform better than the sitting governor who has not served out his two terms. Fine. But that is where the line between the promises they are making on behalf of their principals and that of the commitment in the form of performance of the sitting governor is drawn. Promise and commitment, though can serve as campaign tools, should not be confused. They hold two unrelated meanings and implications.

A promise is a declaration or an assurance that one will do something or that a particular thing will happen. It signifies an intention to perform a specific action in the future.

On the other hand, a commitment is a binding obligation or a dedication to a cause, activity or person. It goes beyond mere words and is reflected in consistent actions and behaviours over time. Commitment thus signifies a deeper level of dedication and responsibility.

Simply put, a promise is an intention to do something, while a commitment is the action of consistently following through on that intention. Promises can be made quickly and brazenly, but commitments require sustained efforts and dedication.

As it is at the federal level today, the APC is the ruling party in Ekiti State. The strength of the party lies in the fact that it is the party in action, and the performance of the sitting governor is its selling point. To leave such commitment, which the party has already entered into, and start making extraneous promises, will be preposterous of the party. Worse off will be to abandon certainty and start marketing uncertainties. That will be tantamount to gambling. No amount of trolling can push the ruling party to take such a risk in the coming election. A bird in the hand, they say, is worth two in the bush.

Ekiti imposes ban on public smoking, warns defaulters

The Ekiti State government has declared a ban on the public consumption of nicotine and tobacco products across the state.

The government made the declaration on Friday during the flag-off ceremony of Smoke-Free project and 2025 World No Tobacco Day organised in collaboration with the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, (CAPPA) in commemoration of World No Tobacco Day 2025.

Speaking at the event, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Health, Oyebanji Filani, called on individuals, organizations, and stakeholders to join hands with the state government to nip the menace of tobacco and its negative impact on public health.

The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Mrs. Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, noted that the state is moving decisively to protect Ekiti people through a clear and coordinated public health intervention.

While decrying the devastating and harmful effects of tobacco, the commissioner advocated for stronger control measures to protect public health towards eradicate the scourge in Ekiti communities.

According to him, “We must empower communities with accurate information, strengthen regulations to close loopholes, and support those on the journey to quit tobacco use. Our youth deserve to grow up in environments free from the manipulation of profit-driven industries.

“We must educate the public about the industry’s manipulative strategies, implement and enforce strict regulations on tobacco products, marketing, and sales, provide resources and support for those trying to quit tobacco use by establishing a quitting group, and prioritize public health over industry interests.

“Let us stand together as advocates for health, truth, and a tobacco-free future. On this World No Tobacco Day, let’s pledge to expose the industry’s tactics and protect future generations from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine addiction. We can create a healthier, tobacco-free world.”

On his part, the Chairman of Ado local government, Bosun Osaloni made an open declaration against the public consumption of tobacco saying that the council will work with the legislative arm to enact laws that will protect the public, especially the youths, from the health hazards of smoking.

The council chairman regretted the harmful effects of tobacco arising from the pungent smell of cigarette smoke in public places, including motor parks, restaurants, and bars in the area.

In the same vein, Executive Director of CAPPA, Oluwafemi Akinbode, said the collaboration with the state government is the urgent need for stronger enforcement and legislative will against the dangers of smoking, particularly at the grassroots level.

His words, “Ekiti State government is making a renouncing pronouncement about declaring Ado-Ekiti a smoke-free city. It essentially means the city will begin to enforce the laws banning smoking in public areas, banning smoking places, and enforcing the ban on smoking in schools and public areas.

“This is a significant step. Having worked nationally and internationally, we are beginning to look at national governments that are closer to the people, because what we are talking about is how people can change and stop smoking.

“The government in Nigeria is doing very well in terms of regulating tobacco control. There is a body of laws that significantly regulate both the production, distribution, and consumption of tobacco products in Nigeria.

“What we are doing is to step down what has happened on the international level, the national level, and the local level. We are beginning to take enforcement to the grassroots where it matters most. The enforcement will be better done at the grassroots level.”

Ekiti PDP violent-free congress signs of victory in 2026 – Fayose

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Emmanuel Fayose, has hailed the recently conducted local government Congress across the 16 council areas of Ekiti state.

Fayose, who described the exercise as a massive success and signs of victory for the party in the 2026 governorship poll, affirmed that the outcome of the congress was a confirmation that PDP is ready to reclaim the state.

The PDP chieftain in a statement in Ado-Ekiti on Monday lauded party faithful and delegates for their peaceful conduct and impressive turnout, despite alleged attempts by some opposition elements to derail the PDP congress through court orders.

Fayose stated that the party members and leaders have through this peaceful conduct reiterated their determination to send the government of the APC packing in the state.

The PDP chieftain added that the alleged attempt to derail the congress through legal distractions was a failed plot by desperate political actors who fear his growing popularity and the momentum behind his candidacy.

“The outcome of the hitch-free congress was a confirmation that the party leaders in Ekiti are now united and committed to rescuing the people from the vestiges of the ruling APC.

“My rising grassroots support and the successful congress have sparked panic in the ruling APC camp, with fears mounting that he is poised to clinch the PDP ticket and become a formidable opponent in 2026.

“The people of Ekiti are ready, the party is united, and the time for real leadership is near”, he added.

  • Rumpus in Ekiti judiciary over exclusion of judge in CJ nominations

Rumpus in Ekiti judiciary over exclusion of judge in CJ nominations

Justice J.B.K. Aladejana, one of Ekiti State’s longest-serving judicial officers, has raised alarm over his exclusion from the shortlist of nominees forwarded to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for appointment as the next Chief Judge of Ekiti State.

The exclusion, according to him, not only contravenes judicial seniority convention but also echoes a painful chapter of past injustice that saw him suspended from office for 16 years.

In a statement, Justice Aladejana decried what he described as a “worrisome outcome” after the Ekiti State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) forwarded names to the NJC based on the preference of Governor Biodun Oyebanji. He said the governor’s choice of Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, who was appointed to the bench nearly 12 years after him, raises constitutional and ethical questions. According to Aladejana, the state’s justification for his exclusion — that he was posted to Court 3 while Justice Ogunmoye sits in Court 2 — is “unconstitutional, against convention and common sense.” He argued that courtroom assignment is merely an administrative matter and not a determinant of judicial seniority. “The Ekiti State government’s position that I am junior because I resumed in Court 3 is both misleading and unjust. It is shocking that after enduring 16 years of suspension based on a disputed NJC recommendation, I am once again being sidelined — this time from my rightful place in the hierarchy,” he said.

Justice Aladejana was suspended in 2006 following his alleged involvement in the controversial impeachment of former Governor Ayodele Fayose. The NJC at the time recommended his retirement, but the Ekiti State Government neither implemented the recommendation nor replaced him permanently. Instead, the government continued to appeal for his reinstatement until it was approved in 2023. “I was eventually reinstated after 16 years, during which the state government continued to treat me as a member of the judiciary. They sent me abroad for studies, appointed me to chair a judicial commission of inquiry on chieftaincy matters, and later made me Chairman of the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission.”

Justice Aladejana added that his posting to Court 3 upon reinstatement was made by the late Justice Oyewole Adeyeye, a judge who was appointed six years after him. “He explained that it was for administrative convenience. I did not contest it because I had just returned after a long absence,” he explained. In what he views as a troubling parallel, Aladejana noted that the same alleged infraction that led to his 16-year suspension — serving as Acting Chief Judge without constitutional authority — is now being echoed in the appointment of Justice Ogunmoye as acting CJ. “It’s an ironic twist. The same issue for which I was made to suffer for over a decade is now being repeated, yet I am the one being further punished,” he said.

Ekiti backs Tinubu’s inclusive education plan

The Ekiti state government has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to implement an all-inclusive education system across the country.

The Special Adviser on special education and social inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, stated that Ekiti would align with the federal government’s plan to create a unified education system that caters to all students, regardless of their physical or social differences.

Agboola spoke on Monday in Ado-Ekiti during an event commemorating the International Albinism Awareness Day, which brought together over 300 persons with albinism from across the state.

The special adviser, who reiterated the Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s government commitment to fostering inclusivity in the state’s education system, assured that the administration would work to ensure students with special needs feel a sense of belonging.

She urged parents to regularly engage with their children’s schools to discuss strategies for supporting their specific challenges, noting that collaboration between parents and educators was key to effective inclusion.

Agboola, who commended members of Ekiti State Albinism Association, assured them that the state government would continue to facilitate access to experts to address the unique challenges faced by persons with albinism.

The Chairman of the Ekiti State chapter of the Albinism Association of Nigeria, Oniya Oluwafemi, emphasised that albinism is not a disease but a condition affected by sun exposure, which can lead to skin cancers if not managed properly.

He applauded Governor Oyebanji for his supports to the albinos and inclusive governance, citing employment and skill acquisition opportunities extended to persons with disabilities.

At the event, dermatologists led by Dr. Olufemi Ologun from the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun State, provided skin and blood examinations for all participants.

    • Traditional ruler justifies action

Family of Oluode in Ayetoro-Ekiti has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, over alleged land grabbing, assault, and destruction of property by the Alayetoro of Ayetoro-Ekiti, Oba Samuel Olufisan Ajayi.

The family claimed that despite a court ruling affirming their ownership of the disputed land, the traditional ruler demolished their property and attacked workers on site.

The family in the petition, through its counsel, Wole Falola and co. alleged that Oba Ajayi led six arm-wielding hoodlums to the property, causing a major damage to ongoing projects, including destroying blocks and wasting cement.

The family also said the hoodlums attacked workers on site with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, beating them.

The petition reads in party, “That a court judgment was given in favour of  Oluode family in a case with the monarch, Oba Ajayi, and the verdict was not appealed and our client have since been in lawful and actual occupation of the law even since.

“That shockingly, around April 2025, the above-named persons in company of some hoodlums at large invaded the land with dangerous weapons such as cutlass and guns wherein they chased away the people working on the land, they destroyed blocks, wasted their cement phones plus valuable items and cash.’’

“That our client laid a complaint at the Police Station, Ido-Ekiti where policemen, were detailed to arrest the suspects. On getting to Ayetoro Ekiti, some of the suspects, particularly Seun Ajayi, Idowu Olaoye and Alaba Akinola resisted the arrest, threatened that they could not be arrested since their DPO had spoken with the Kabiyesi on the issue.

“That our clients were of the conviction that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ido Ekiti, is shielding the suspects to evade arrest for his interaction with the Kabiyesi on the subject matter.

“We, therefore, appeal to you to use your superior office to wade into the matter by arresting, investigating and prosecuting these individuals for their heinous, criminal and lawless acts”, it added.

Oba Ajayi confirmed that he ordered the demolition.

He explained that the land belonged to his mother’s family, and they had approached him to make judicious use of the vast space.

He claimed that the Oluode family, who had won a court case on the land, had trespassed beyond the demarcated area, leading to demolition.

He said: “I was not at home a couple of weeks ago, when some people called me from home that they could see building springing up on the land, outside their demarcated space.

“It was then I told them to go and chase them out and they went and carried out my order.’’

The pensioners who declared supports for Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s re-election, called on governorship aspirants jostling for the plum seat to shelve their ambition and join hands with the governor for the state’s progress.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday during a programme organised to endorsed Governor Oyebanji for re-election, the

NUP chairman, Ekiti chapter, Comr. Tope Popoola, the governor is doing creditably well and there is no need to discontinue him from taking Ekiti to higher pedestal.

Popoola who lauded the governor for his promise his promise-keeping spirit and inclusive governance, said Ekiti people had no regret in entrusting him with their mandate during the 2022 governorship election.

He added that Oyebanji has brought a new lease of life to all segments in the state, saying that the pensioners have never had it so good especially in terms of welfare package, pension and gratuity.

He said the records of the governor on pensioners’ welfare is unprecedented in the history of Ekiti, hence, their support for his re-election.

He highlighted Oyebanji’s achievements, including appointment of Special Adviser on pension matter, regular payments of pension, liquidation of inherited gratuity, and payment of N10,000 palliatives to members.

This endorsement is total. All members collectively agreed to endorse the best Governor in Nigeria, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, because he initiated regular payments of monthly pension, gradual liquidation of the inherited gratuities, payment of pension arrears and payment of N10,000 palliatives fund to our members.

“The governor’s personal donation of a sum of N15m towards our guest house project, appointment of Advisor on pension Matters, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria, are areas where our lives have been touched directly by this governor. We are happy that you made promises and fulfilled them.

“While thanking you for all that you have been doing for the pensioners to enhance our welfare, we have come with one voice to adopt you and reciprocate your giant strides with unflinching support during the next elections”.

The NUP National Vice President, Com. Ayo Kumapayi, commended Oyebanji for restoring the respect and dignity of the pensioners in the state and making them credit worthy to be able to participate in the economic activities.

“I could remember a time in this state, our members were so poor that we became subjects of ridicule in the market. But today, Oyebanji has reversed this trend and restored our respect and dignity. We now go to market and buy whatever we need. God bless our governor”, he said.

In his response, Oyebanji, saluted the pensioners for their unflinching support, saying their full backing further lent credence to the fact that his government hasn’t disappointed the populace.

Oyebanji represented by his deputy, Chief Monisade Afuye assured pensioners that their wellbeing is a priority, promising to continue addressing challenges faced by the senior citizens.

“I wish to assure you that the interest of our senior citizens and indeed the people of Ekiti State is paramount to us and he would not relent in the good works we have commenced. We are committed to addressing the challenges being faced by our senior citizens.

“We understand the importance of timely payment of pensions, gratuities and access to quality healthcare to enhance your quality of life. These are actions that reflect our vision for a society that values and uplifts its elders.

“Your wellbeing is not just a matter of obligation, it is a priority that aligns with our vision of inclusive governance and commitment to shared prosperity. We shall continue to pursue this within available resources”.
