  • Army ends Operation Flush Out Criminals from Ekiti, Ondo forests

Soldiers from 32 Artillery Brigade at Owena Barracks in Akure, the Ondo State capital, yesterday ended the five-day clearance operation, code-named Operation Flush Out Criminals, at various flash points in Efon Alaaye Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

There had been reports of armed robberies and abduction in the area, leading to many deaths.

During the operation, the troops, led by Brig.-Gen James Ataguba, combed the forests of Oba Ayetoro, Arifa, Iwaraja, Ereguru, Ijeda and other communities bordering Osun State in the axis.

Kidnappers’ and armed robbers’ camps found in the forests were reportedly dismantled.

The Nation learnt that residents of some communities who had fled their homes due to fear of being harmed by hoodlums have returned to their hamlets.

The soldiers have reportedly begun regular intensive patrol of flash points on Iwaraja-Efon-Alaaye-Erio-Ado-Ekiti road.

The Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Major Ojo Adenegan, warned criminals to stay away from Ekiti and Ondo states.

The senior soldier said the Artillery Brigade would not relent in its efforts to align with other security agencies in the two neighbouring states to flush out criminals.

This, he said, is to make the states uncomfortable for any criminal, their sponsors and their informants.

Adenegan urged the public, especially traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders, to protect lives and property of residents through prompt information sharing.

During the clearing operation, a decomposed body of a man suspected to be a victim of kidnapping, was reportedly found in the forest with his GSM phone ringing ceaselessly.

  • Ekiti on the move again

It’s rather exciting that the authors of the Ekiti debacle are regrouping to fix their mess.  Is July 14 then redemption day — or yet another hope deferred?

At the very Genesis in 2007, Dayo Adeyeye stormed out of the old Action Congress (AC), the vibrant part of the comatose Alliance for Democracy (AD), and forebear of the legacy Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), that fused with other legacy parties to form APC.

Prince Adeyeye’s protest was on Ekiti gubernatorial nomination matters.  His exact ire was this same Kayode Fayemi, who he alleged the AC top hierarchs had given undue edge.

Though Adeyeye was a dashing progressive and, as the nimble national publicity secretary of the then formidable Afenifere, a veteran of the NADECO-era anti-Abacha war of attrition, he felt piqued enough to jump in with the relatively conservative PDP.

Besides, at Ayo Fayose’s second coming in 2014, while others were still disputing his nomination, Adeyeye was the first to strike a deal with him.  That took the wind out of that protest, and sort of cemented the Fayose encore.  But it’s good Adeyeye is back, and is part of the salvage mission.

The same, with former Governor, Segun Oni.  Chief Oni, a quintessential gentleman if ever there was one, was another former progressive that found warmth in Ekiti conservative duvet.

Oni was part of the Ekiti elite that fought Fayose to a standstill, at those ultra-dangerous times, of free-wheeling killing and maiming, of Fayose’s first coming.  But somewhat, Fayose had fled town, on account of a controversial impeachment, so rife during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s second term, of organized anomie.

Somewhat still, Oni popped up, as gubernatorial candidate for the same party, on whose behalf Fayose had run down Ekiti.  Like Brutus in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, who claimed he didn’t hate Julius but loved Rome for partaking in Caesar’s murder, some folks claimed Oni didn’t hate Fayemi but just loved himself more!

So, he rode to office with a huge dose of perceived opportunism.  Not only that, his “progressive” whiff watered down the AC Ekiti progressive franchise.  So, when that election was comprehensively stolen, no thanks to the 2007 Obasanjo do-or-die electoral salvo, the Ekiti progressives were bitterly divided.

Well, after more than three years, the court ruled Oni’s win was a heist; and restored Fayemi’s mandate.  One thing led to the other, including PDP’s self-destruction and Oni’s defection.  Now, Oni is back “home”, among the Ekiti salvagers.

Now MOB — Michael Opeyemi Bamidele — who almost became victim of a policeman with a mob mentality, at Fayemi’s campaign launch on June 1, no thanks to a reported accidental discharge that hit him and others.  May the Almighty grant them all complete healing.

Were it not so tragic, MOB’s shooting could pass as a heroic spilling of blood, for a very grim rescue mission, which success or failure could make or mar Ekiti.

Yet, both MOB and Dr. Fayemi must take the full blame (aside from the Goodluck Jonathan Presidency that cashed in, with rogue “federal might”), for Fayose’s second coming.

MOB insisted on challenging Fayemi for governor, despite a sitting governor’s right to second term.

His grouse?  Fayemi allegedly failed to consummate agreed political trade-offs, which led to MOB giving up his Senate aspiration (which Femi Ojudu eventually got, incidentally defeating Fayose in that election), and Jimoh Ibrahim, an Ado-Ekiti politician, who ran a joint campaign with MOB — MOB for Senate, Jimmy for Reps — to give up his Federal House ticket (which MOB got) for promised party patronage, that allegedly never came.

Aside, asked why he couldn’t just wait till 2018, MOB claimed he had cause to believe Fayemi had zoned him out; and parcelled the governorship to another.  So, he exited to Labour Party (LP) to stake his claim.  Needless to say, the ACN in-fighting back then gave Fayose the edge, aside from Jonathan’s “federal might”.

Well, again MOB is back in the house, to join in the Ekiti rescue — and again, may God grant him fast and full healing from his gunshot wounds.

Fayemi’s contribution to the Ekiti debacle was his rather perplexing gubernatorial medley of brilliant policies and toxic politics.

Dr. Fayemi achieved unprecedented developmental strides in Ekiti.  His urban upgrade lifted Ado from at best a big rural town, at worst a sprawling big village, to a modern metropolis.  His street-lighting gave security a healthy jab in the arm, aside from boosting night city beauty.

His education policy would mature and yield wonderful fruits, ironically during Fayose’s second coming, thus acting as an oasis of Renaissance in a desert of unbridled barbarism.  His N5, 000 payout to the poorest and most vulnerable Ekiti elders was the most ambitious in Ekiti’s history, despite the state’s humble purse.

His tourism policy, trying to transform the Ikogosi Warm Springs into a hub of nature leisure all-year and a summer scholarship retreat, to rebrand Ekiti, was a serious study in structured development.

But not all these would appear to matter, as his perceived toxic politics turned almost every developmental asset into an electoral albatross.  Though Fayemi always insists he didn’t really fairly lose the 2014 polls, a good segment of Ekiti, with zest, embraced Fayose’s manic gallop into the past, than Fayemi’s carefully calibrated path into the future.

Even if Fayemi wins on July 14, he must fundamentally revamp his politics to earn the plaudits his policies deserve.  Otherwise, his political future could be bleak.  But again, it is good too that he heads the salvage mission, for a debacle he helped to create.

Before you charge Ripples with stark Manichaean presumption — Fayemi is good, Fayose is evil; progressives are good, conservatives are bad, etc — let it be known this column is driven by the ideology of development.

And if you want to know how bad Ekiti is faltering on that scale, just contrast how Ekiti has regressed under Fayose with the advancement the neighbouring Osun has chalked under Rauf Aregbesola.  Yet Ekiti, under Fayemi, had a few months head start, retrieving its stolen mandate than Osun, in 2014.

In eight short years, six of which were economically lean, if not outright perilous, Aregbesola has primed Osun with the critical infrastructure — physical and social — needed to modernize its economy, propel productivity and earn genuine prosperity: futuristic schools, critical and ultra-modern road networks Osun had never witnessed, and the signal schools feeding programme, so beneficial the Federal Government has copied and implemented it in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states.

Ekiti?  It’s the direct opposite.  Fayemi’s four development-savvy years have been blown away by Fayose’s four of the barbarians — barbarians of cascading backwardness, in almost every sphere of life — with the empty whoop of “stomach infrastructure”

Imagine what Ekiti would have been today, if Fayemi, warts and all, had secured a second term, based on his developmental agenda?

That is the race against time Ekiti faces on July 14.  But it’s good the authors of the debacle are back, in a tough battle, to make good.

It’s all left to Ekiti to, four years after Fayose, yet again choose salvation or perdition.

  • We didn’t bring mopol to Ekiti to kill Fayemi, says campaign group

The Prince Tayo Adebiyi Campaign Organisation has denied the claim that the mobile policeman that fired gunshots at Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele and five other All Progressives Congress (APC) members last Friday was in Ekiti State on an illegal duty.

The group also denied harbouring any plan to assassinate the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, describing the shooting incident as an “accidental discharge”.

Adebiyi, a House of Representatives aspirant, who is in police custody was arrested on Saturday to state all he knows about the shooting incident.

Addressing reporters in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, Director General, Prince Tayo Adebiyi Campaign Organisation, Mr. David Ayeni, said his principal brought the policeman because of the growing incidence of kidnapping along Efon-Iwaraja-Erinmo, in recent times.

Ayeni clarified that the policeman was struggling with a group of party members, who wanted to mob the dignitaries when the trigger was suddenly pulled and released the bullets.

He said the shooting was regrettable, but insisted that it was a clear case of accidental discharge as once posited by the Ekiti State Police Command.

Ayeni appreciated the Nigeria Police Force for their effectiveness, by promptly bringing the situation under control, saying this reduced the number of casualties.

  • Ekiti: bloody opening to grim electioneering?

Obuko de, oorun de”, the Yoruba would say with a wink of deja vu. The Yoruba-English translation of that isn’t easy, without the expression losing its drama and its flavour.

But suffice it to say that it has to do with the billy goat and its over-powering smell. In that context, it signifies noting but mischief, at best; disaster at worst.

So, when on July 1, shots rang out at the inaugural Kayode Fayemi campaign to kick off his electioneering for the July 14 Ekiti gubernatorial election, at the All Progressives Congress (APC) state secretariat, not a few didn’t think twice before pointing fingers towards the Ayo Fayose government’s way, arguing with knowing looks, that it was an “assassination attempt” against Fayemi.

Opeyemi Bamidele, however, got caught in the crossfire.  He has, according to reports, since undergone a successful surgery and he is said to be recuperating from the wounds.

But the Fayose camp, ever ready to roll in the bog, pronounced itself game, trying to hang the mess on neighbouring Ondo Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu’s neck.  From the Fayose propaganda machine, the policeman, from whose gun the bullets came flying, was one of the many, it alleged, Akeredolu “rented” and drafted into Ekiti, to terrorize and subdue the people, in Fayemi’s favour!

Even, Dayo Adeyeye, newly defected from the Ekiti Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC, after losing the party’s gubernatorial nomination, laid claim to a part of the assassination theory.  According to him, he was the target, because someone, somewhere in Fayose’s camp had allegedly threatened him — you need to be alive, he quoted the alleged malcontent to have said, to defect anywhere!  Obuko de, oorun de!

Mercifully, however, all these claims would appear the over-fertile imagination that often plagues the immediate aftermath of disaster or near-diasaster, weaving  colourful tales!  Preliminary investigation suggests the shooting, as costly as it was, appeared an accidental discharge from a mobile police officer, who nevertheless the police authorities said was on “illegal duty”.  The police should give us detailed briefings, as they get more information.

Still, that accident may well be a stiff eye opener for a potentially bloody and tension-soaked campaign, in the run up to the July 14 governorship elections.

Both camps have been talking tough, in a manner of a bloody, no-retreat-no-surrender war, that must be settled on the battle field, with clear winners and losers.

Perhaps fearing a return dose of the notorious “federal might” that delivered his own election in 2014, Governor Fayose has betrayed excessive excitability, predicting doom for whoever dares to “rig” the election, sparing at real or imagined “federal might”, not unlike Don Quixote tilting at the windmills!

The Fayemi camp has been no less bellicose, declaring it wasn’t at all fazed by Fayose’s infantile wolf-cry, insisting that wouldn’t prevent the PDP electoral ouster on July 14.

At the end of the day, however, it is only an election, not war!  If Ekiti makes a wise choice, they would enjoy the dividends for the next four years, till 2022.  If they make a foolish one, it is strictly theirs to endure for four long years.  But choice must be sacrosanct and free of any illicit pressure of any kind.  Democracy demands no less.

Which is why the security agencies must take the July 1 shooting as a wake-up call, and wrap a safety and security ring around Ekiti, during this electioneering period.

Prevention, they say, is better than cure; and sure, there would be life after the July 14 polls.  The security agencies should, therefore, demonstrate zero tolerance for bloodshed during this campaign period.

  • Ekiti shooting: Bamidele moved to Lagos for post-surgery treatment

Injured former House of Representatives member and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, has been moved to Lagos for post-surgery treatment.
He was flown to Lagos aboard an Air Ambulance Chopper with registration number 5N-BSW belonging to Flying Doctors Nigeria, which landed at about 3.05pm at sports field of Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti.
Bamidele was shot by a mobile policeman at the APC secretariat during a welcome rally for its governorship aspirant, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Friday.
The former federal lawmaker had a surgery on Friday which lasted about four hours to remove two bullets lodged in his abdominal region and leg. He was in a stable condition before being moved to Lagos.
The surgery was performed at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) by a team of eight doctors including four consultants.
A statement on Sunday by his media aide, Ahmed Salami, disclosed that Bamidele was moved to Lagos for treatment as a follow up to the surgeries he undertook for the gunshot wounds he sustained.
Salami said although Bamidele’s health has stabilized appreciably, there was need for him to go for post surgery treatments to ensure quick convalescence for him to be able to join Dr. Fayemi’s campaign train, of which he has been playing a pivotal role.
He said: “We want to assure our teeming supporters to discountenance the misinformation by rumour peddlers that his health had relapsed, saying he was in a stable condition and people were already having unfettered access to him at EKSUTH before he left for Lagos.
“Dr. Fayemi and his wife Erelu Bisi Fayemi, Aare Afe Babalola, Engr. Segun Oni, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Dr. Wole Oluleye, Barrister Victor Kolade and several other bigwigs in APC circle including ordinary
members of his party were allowed access to him on the sick bed confirming the appreciable level of his stability before being allowed to be taken out of the state.
“Let me put on records that his being taken to Lagos was caused by gross dearth of equipment and personnel at EKSUTH.
“As much as we salute the proficiency and commitments of the Doctors in the hospital, let me also added that many of the consultants and equipment used in performing the surgery were hired from other hospitals.
“To forestall a situation whereby we have to rely on bringing equipment that are readily available in other hospitals down to Ekiti to treat him, we decided to shift him to such hospital to fast-track his recuperation.”
  • Ekiti lawmakers back Olusola at highway sitting

Members of Ekiti State House of Assembly yesterday held a special sitting on a major highway in Ado-Ekiti, the capital, to back the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

The lawmakers, who held their plenary at the foot of the Ado-Ekiti Flyover inaugurated by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan last Saturday, warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) that Ekiti is “a no-go area for rigging”.

During the sitting, which started at 12.13 pm, the lawmakers resolved to work for Olusola’s victory to ensure realisation of the continuity agenda of Ayodele Fayose’s administration.

Led by Speaker Kola Oluwawole, the lawmakers pledged to resist any attempt by the Federal Government and its agencies “to scuttle the wishes of the people through their votes at the July 14 governorship election”.

In the lead debate by House Leader of Business, Mr. Olatunji Akinyele, the legislators affirmed their loyalty to the governor for using his mandate for the benefit of Ekiti residents.

Akinyele hailed Fayose for “changing the face of Ekiti” with people-oriented projects, including the dualisation of roads in Ado-Ekiti and other major towns.

The lawmaker noted that this culminated in the inauguration of the flyover last Saturday by Jonathan.

He added: “We support Prof Olusola for the governorship of Ekiti State and we urge the people to vote for the continuity of Fayose’s legacies.

“We also warn that the Federal Government should steer clear of the governorship election because rigging will not be allowed in Ekiti State.”

The lawmaker representing Ijero Constituency, Mr. Dayo Akinleye, said Ekiti residents would not be intimidated by federal might at the election.

He said: “The federal might cannot intimidate us because the PDP is on ground in Ekiti. We call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the real votes of the people and the police should not allow themselves to be used for dirty jobs.”

The lawmaker representing Oye Constituency I, Dr. Samuel Omotoso, claimed the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was not popular at home.

Omotoso said: “Fayemi is from my constituency; he is not popular at all. For several elections, Fayemi has only been able to win his one ward of six wards in previous elections.

“I have not seen how such a candidate can be helped. This is a message to INEC and the Federal Government that Fayemi is like a patient the doctor would say has poor prognosis.

“The coming election is like that for APC: they cannot win and can never win. We are united in continuity under Fayose and we have confidence in Eleka, who is a professor of Building Technology, unlike a doctorate degree holder in War Studies, who would only destroy.”

Speaker Oluwawole said: “This plenary is special in the sense that the government of the day has performed well. We were elated and we have decided to come to the open to commend the performance of Fayose.

“I want to correct an impression. We have only one member on suspension; the other six who are not here have obtained permission.

“This is to correct an impression that some people are boasting that 10 of us are defecting. That is a fallacy. Fayemi is a serial loser who has never won any election. The last one was through judicial abracadabra.  He will lose on July 14.

“I say this for the record. We are a united house and we remain dogged. We cannot be intimidated nor harassed or kidnapped. We are commitment to Fayose who has demonstrated that he is committed to the service of humanity in Ekiti…”

  • Herdsmen/Farmers Clashes: Experts urge farmers to embrace ranching

Some security experts on Friday urged farmers to embrace ranching as a lasting solution to the perennial clashes with cattle herdsmen in various communities in the country.

The security experts told our reporter in Lagos that cattle ranching would go a long way in curbing herdsmen clashes and cattle rustling in the country.

Mr Aghanya Ibezimako, a retired Commissioner of Police, said that the killings persisted due to lack of modern crime-fighting equipment by the police.

Ibezimako, former CP in Benue, Kogi and Ekiti, called on all security agencies to synergies and share intelligence to finally tackle the menace.

“Initially the country was battling with Boko Haram insurgency and now it has graduated to herdsmen killings.

Read Also: ‘Herdsmen’s, farmers’ clashes may worsen without ranches’

“Government needed to provide necessary equipment to the police to fight this crime because they are closer to the public than other security agencies,” Ibezimako said.

The former CP commended Federal Government for deploying 150 special force of the Nigerian Air Force in Benue and other states where the clashes were prevalent, saying that it would yield positive result.

Mr Micheal Sam-Wobo, a security expert, urged government to deploy the use of information technology in fighting crime, adding that it would also generate employment among the youths.

According to him, technology can be used in detecting suicide bombers carrying explosives inside their dresses.

Mr Tony Ozorh, another security expert, called on National Assembly to enact a law establishing ranching as private businesses as was being done in advanced countries.

Ozorh said that countries like Bulgaria, Algeria and Brazil, among others, made ranching serious business enterprises through which the countries generate income from it.

According to him, herdsmen of the premordial time who used to move around with sticks now carry AK 47 rifles.

“Cattle herdsmen should have grazing areas where they can feed their animals.

“We urged the National Assembly to pass a law that will establish ranching like in other countries of the world,” he said.

  • Ekiti presidential lodge named after Jonathan

The new Presidential Lodge of Ekiti state government will be named after former President of Nigeria Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on Friday.

The Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose disclosed this on his verified Twitter account.

He said: “Today in Ekiti, the Presidential Lodge in the Govt House, Ado Ekiti will be named after former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

  • Fayose planning attack on Segun Oni’s supporters, says Fayemi

    …. Ojudu pledges support

The Kayode Fayemi Campaign Office said it has uncovered a clandestine plan by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to carry out coordinated attacks on supporters and associates of former Governor Segun Oni, using thugs who would pretend to be working for Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Minister of Mines and Steel Development and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the campaign office, the plan, which had reached advanced stage, was designed by Fayose as part of the efforts to cause disharmony between the two former governors as well as their supporters. According to information, the assailants would carry out the dastardly act, wearing JKF branded materials and making insinuations that would establish a possible link to the Fayemi political camp.

Security agencies in the state are hereby alerted to this clandestine move by the PDP goons aimed at introducing violent dimension to the politics of the state ahead of the July 14 governorship election. We urge all supporters and members of APC to remain vigilant, shun any form of violence  during this electioneering period and report any act of intimidation to the law enforcement agencies,” the  release said.

Meanwhile, Senator Babafemi Ojudu has promised support for Fayemi  to win the governorship election in the state on July 14. Ojudu, Senior Special Adviser on Politics to the President had withdrawn from the race for the APC ticket after it was marred by violence. In a statement by his campaign team, ERO 2018, he was quoted as saying “We wish to extend good wishes to the nominee of our party Dr. Kayode Fayemi and restate our support for the policies of President Muhammadu Buhari to fight corruption anywhere it may be found”

He expressed appreciation to all for the support given to him during his quest to be the candidate of the party in Ekiti State reiterating that it “was never about an ambition, but about our people.” He added that the withdrawal by his group was an act of patriotism – to reinforce the importance of the sanctity of the process and ensure the sanity of our political system while being focused on the big picture.

  • Ekiti: As we inch towards 14 July

House of War” is a chronicle of the bitter and bloody struggle for political power in Nigeria’s Second Republic, especially among the followers of the late sage,  Chief Obafemi Awolowo. It is the story of the schism in the Awo camp and how Awoists turned against one another in the great scramble for political office. The book exposes the politicians’ grand auction of principles and the political intrigues, double dealings, back stabbings, stealing of votes, arson and killings, that characterised the Second Republic, especially during the 1983 elections. It is a vital  book for those who have been following Nigeria’s new attempt to establish a worthwhile democracy since the end of military rule in 1999″.

Written by Dare Babarinsa,  unarguably, one of Nigeria’s most resourceful media practitioners, HOUSE OF WAR is an unremitting catalogue of blood, tears, murder and mayhem – a catastrophe  that must, God willing, never be repeated  in the Southwest or anywhere in Nigeria, ever again.

Anybody aged 50 years and above, in either  Ondo or Ekiti state would,  most probably, see the Ekiti governorship election scheduled for Saturday, 14 July 2018, with some foreboding. It was precisely that mindset  of fear that  made  Dare, the author, to call me as early as 7 am, on Sunday, 13 May, (the day immediately following  the rerun of the botched APC primaries at which Dr Kayode Fayemi emerged the APC candidate with his co -contestants congratulating him), to start pondering on how not to have a repeat of the 1983 cataclysm. Needless to say, I am generously mentioned in The House of War.

While the essence of this article is to show that there should be no reason for a rehash of that ugly event, it is, more importantly, to plead with the real dramatis personae, Governor Ayodele Fayose and the Solid Minerals Minister, Dr Kayode Fayemi. Incidentally, I am close to both and they know why I am eminently qualified to play the role I have set my self in this piece.

The first thing to know, which I am sure they know only too well but which their unnecessarily excited supporters may care little or nothing about, is the fact that Ekiti is one. We are a homogenous people and  therefore , all subscribe to the Omoluabi ethos. We obviously  need not do anything to warrant a recrudescence of our 1983 malady, not to talk of anything  near the Rivers state 2015 governorship festival  of  killings,  arson, decapitations  and burning of corpses . But  it takes only a spark , a rumour, a wrong word, or even a small misdemeanor to ignite a crisis of  unforeseen dimensions.

I sound this warning because a lot is already on social media which can not help  matters going into the election. There is, for instance, the claim, by a vocal supporter of governor Fayose that the emergence of Dr Fayemi  equates to President Muhammadu Buhari  fighting Ashiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Yoruba land , a red herring, if anything at all.  . When I interjected to say  that Ashiwaju has not only endorsed Fayemi’s candidacy but has, indeed,  pleaded with his co -contestants,  as well as all APC members,  and supporters to rally round the candidate, he  remained ever obdurate , offering instead, to be Ashiwaju’s armour bearer, even where he hasn’t as much as ask him . This  is dangerous politics which must be stopped henceforth .

Happily, on the other side, I have heard Dr Fayemi appeal to his supporters to treat everybody with  utmost decorum.. Governor Fayose may have to do the same.

My advice then is that , rather than throw needless tantrums at  each other, the  two leading political  parties, in particular, should make their campaigns issue based; concentrating on what they would do to emancipate our people from poverty squalor and other debilities  as well as emphasise their developmental agenda.

Given the circumstances, therefore, , what they can present as a guide to what they would do if elected , are the records of performance of the last two administrations in the state, that is, the performance chart of  then governor Kayode Fayemi and that of the sitting governor Ayo Fayose. These, I imagine, should be enough for the good people of Ekiti to, in their collective wisdom, make an informed choice. Fortunately, President Buhari has shown, beyond any shadow of doubt,  courtesy  past elections during his administration,  that he is neither President Obasanjo nor Jonathan, who would immerse himself in the outcome of any election. We are therefore guaranteed a free, fair and transparent election.

Being quite  close to the APC candidate and the government he headed from 2010 – 2014, I know that none of Ekiti’s over 100 hamlets, villages, and  towns,  benefitted by less than 2, 3 or more projects from that government. I am equally aware that some  of the projects  currently being executed by the Fayose government include the Ado-Ekiti overhead bridge, the new Governor’s Office, a new High Court complex, and dualised roads among others. For Fayemi, there were roads, legacy projects, a re – engineered Ikogosi tourist centre as well as dead industries that were brought back to life, an example being the Ire Burnt Blocks industry.

I would like to see the Professor  Eleka campaign do exactly what  Toyin  Akingbade, did on Ekitipanupo – the Ekiti intellectual web portal – this past week,  listing the projects the Fayemi administration accomplished in the Ikole Local Government Area, which he correctly says were mostly replicated in other Local Government Areas of the state. The PDP candidate would also be at liberty to include those projects, like building even toilets in schools where there used to be none, 5 kilometre or less roads, etc done by LGs as all these can only be  correctly chalked up to the incumbent government.

I show below, the projects, as presented by Akingbade.

This information can be presented by both parties in multi media platforms for easy spread.

Since governor Fayose’s government has a directorate of stomach infrastructure, Professor Eleka should also show the government’s programmes comparable to    Fayemi’s social safety net programmes like the  N5000 monthly stipend to 20,000 Ekiti elders, and the others, put at another 20,000 making a total of 40, 000, who were earning some money monthly during the Fayemi era.

Finally,  there are the  two critical  issues of the state’s debt stock and payment of workers salaries  where both should  endeavour to  educate us. Given the considerable controversy surrounding the first, it should help each respective  campaign if it could publish from the records of the national Debt Management Office (DMO) which would show, not only the amounts, but the timelines  as to when the debts were accessed. This should clear all the cobwebs in the state’s public finance.

Outstanding workers’ salsries has since become a national embarrassment. While it is obvious that Fayemi owed only Tue September, 2014 owing to no fault of his, it is believed that the sitting government owes no less than an average of 6 months. Given the present debt stock put at about N56B, it would no doubt help Professor Eleka and his campaign to let the electorate into how this came about.

If the two  candidates would do this,  make the campaigns issue based and non rancorous, and candidates on the emerging new partied concentrated their campaign on what they have in store for us, Ekiti can effortlessly turn out the must emulate state in all future elections in Nigeria.

In the name of God politicians should please spare us tears and blood. There must be life for Ekiti and its peoples after the election.
