Why power must shift in Ekiti, by aspirant

Dr. Adebayo Orire is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State. He spoke with reporters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on his ambition and other partisan issues. Excerpts:

What is your assessment of the political situation in Ekiti State?

Ekiti State is 21 years old and we are happy we have the state. But, if you look around, you will see what you would not have thought you will see in Ekiti in terms of negativity and retrogression in Ekiti land. One would have expected that a small state like Ekiti to have become more economically buoyant,   politically stable, socially attractive, and commercially viable.  But, what we are seeing now is social degradation, economic stagnation, political instability and rascality, and some negative indices of growth factors, like as we speak, there no single production industry  in Ekiti, apart from ABUAD farm, there is no single farm in Ekiti that can feed one thousand people.

So, some of those indices would have been maximally low so that we would have to witness more progress in the state, look at politics, we have the highest turnover of governors and rulers  and each defacto government that comes and goes without leaving much  behind.  It has rather resorted in capital flight. We have imported governors, imported commissioners, imported political leaders  and where they live is where their accounts are and you cannot even  access the volume of money that comes into the state in form of loans in your banks because they don’t really stay so the state is left poorer than it was in those days.  If your think of socials, our morals are lower than it was twenty years.

You could see insecurity here and there than those days when Ekiti was a safe haven for everybody; peaceful, loving. But what is heartwarming about Ekiti now is that is a state with a lot of potentials, human resources are superbly abundant, the weather is very good, the climate is very good, the land is expansive and fertile, mineral resources are there in abundant, agrarian opportunities abound, industrial opportunities abound, the land is really still virgin and is just waiting for the right person to come and develop her.

Who is that right person that you think that do the magic?

The magic lies in somebody like me. I have been in Ekiti since 1980, I know the terrain, I know what they like, I know what they lack I know what will make Ekiti buoyant socially and industrially, and in every facet of life. The issue is that I am based here, because I have been here I have been practicing my profession here for years, I have done a lot of businesses here, ranging  from stone quarry, I have gone into agriculture, I have gone into transportation, I have gone into trading and commercial exploits. I have gone into medical practice, I have gone into mineral exploitation; so I know a lot we can do in Ekiti that can make her buoyant in two years. I know what we can plant in Omuo, I know what we can plant in Efon, I know what we can do in Ado Ekiti that are just all waiting to be exploited. Twelve years back when I wanted to contest for Governorship, I told the people that I am going to do 100 industries in four years, as we speak there is no single industry in Ekiti.

I was going to replant 100 million cocoa seedlings in four years 50 million palm trees in four years and as we speak, there is no single farmer that we can say can boast of 30 thousand cocoa seedlings in Ekiti.  Ekiti cocoa was used to be one of the major cocoa that we used to build Cocoa House in Ibadan, and up till now there is no single irrigation farming in Ekiti in large quantity, we usually import tomatoes from the North during the dry season, this is saddling, and these are the things we can put in proper shape and make everybody happy in Ekiti.

What do you think has been responsible for the past leaders inability to put things in proper shape in the state?

The truth is that they were all Ekiti people but they never lived in Ekiti, so they never knew the real needs of the people, imagine somebody who came to do roads and forget the future of agriculture in Ekiti State, truly he had worked, yes but that is his focus because that is the only thing he sees whenever he comes round over the weekends in the state. He only he sees the roads he never went to the farms, he never knew how yams he ate in the hotels came about.

So, there is no way such a person can get the priorities right, everybody had come to do one thing or the other that are good, high fluting, white elephant. Everybody had tried, but you cannot give what is not in you or what you don’t have. Whatever you don’t have passion about cannot come up in your projects as priority, so it is me that stays here that knows the priorities, because I have a business here I know what we will do that will fetch people the money to come and patronize my business.

I know, majority of people in Ekiti apart from civil servants are farmers and traders, so we have to really point this out, I know how to open up the economy of Ekiti by heavy agrarian pursuit and industrialization, and these are what a lot of people will not see when they come from outside.

For instance, like somebody doing the overhead bridge in Ado Ekiti now, that is what he sees because he stays in Ibadan, and he wanted a Mokola experience in Ado Ekiti. Do you get what I am saying now, so, a lot of things will just come to your mind because of your association, because of where you grew up, where you stayed, your economy, these things  will rub in on you, on your perception of the need of people, if they had stayed in Ekiti, all their lives they will knows the priority they will know the first thing first, and life itself is about prioritisation. You know, everybody needs to enjoy but everybody needs to work, but the person that enjoy first will go poor, but the person that works first and earns money will go richer, and still enjoy. So prioritisation has been the problem we have in Ekiti, and that is because we had not had the luck of fielding grounded home based politician.

Secondly, you have to put people of integrity in position, and you cannot know of somebody‘s integrity without living with him.

We have packaged leaders. They were packaged for us as highly educated people, as people of high  integrity, people of high volubility, and so on, but you cannot package your system.  However, they  tried their best, but it is not possible to give out what you don’t have, but we have to really go into details of what have the person has done with his personal life. Is he a success in his profession? Does he have a charitable heart?, the kind heart, the attachment to the land, without all these things your ruler ship will be on the surface, and you will not be able to get the real hold on the goodness you want to dish to the people. When you do things that people need, these things will speak for themselves and will announce you and put you in their minds, like realistic and pragmatic person.

You are a medical practitioner and a cleric, could you to juxtapose how these qualities will  come to bear on Ekiti politics?

If you really want to do politics, and you are really serious, then you need to have a kind heart that is attached to the welfare of the people of the land that will develop the health of the people that you want to rule, and so my medical inclination and my religious standing will actually make me a more kind Governor who will see everything as service  divinely ordained to make people and their lives most comfortable. What I am saying is that as a medical doctor, I have the intelligent, I have education, I  know what an average Ekiti could afford, I know what they lack, I know what an average Ekiti can afford for treatment.

So, they are an extension of me, I pity them, in fact, some people cannot afford  treatment, some people cannot even afford food, and as a Pastor and Reverend fellow, I know how they feel, I am part and parcel of  these people, so those two qualities has actually informed my passion for Ekiti people.

For instance, you could see some somebody who could not afford  money when he comes to your hospital, somebody you operate upon and will stay up to like two weeks before he gets money, these are things that actually gingered my interest in wanting to put solace into the heart of the people.

In this part of the country I know everything that one needs to do to put smiles on the face of everybody in Ekiti, and I know that everything we need to grow Ekiti to great success abound in the state, if we continue to break the rocks that we have in Ekiti, we will make money.

If we continue to do irrigation with our streams, we will grow enough vegetation and arable products that we can export. I know that we can generate power from  wind, from sun, from  waters, and even from refuse dumps, because I am here, I am practicing my medicine here, I practice my clergy work here, and because I started politics here, I know the needs of my people. I know the things that can make my people happy, I know what can make the people grow, I know what can feed them and make them rich. So, all the three are synergistic, and complementary to each other.

  • Ekiti doctors decry unpaid six months’ salaries

Doctors in Ekiti State, under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), have decried the six months’ unpaid salaries owed their colleagues working in government hospitals.

They said the situation was causing them serious hardship.

The doctors called for the immediate payment of their salaries and effective funding of health institutions, particularly the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).

They said this would improve healthcare delivery and ensure that EKSUTH meets its core mandate in research and training.

NMA’s State Chairman, Dr. Sunday Omoya, spoke at the weekend in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, at an event marking the end of the 2017 Physicians’ Week and the association’s annual general meeting (AGM).

Omoya said 300 people were offered free medical treatment by doctors at Ipole Iloro in Ekiti West Local Government Area within the period under review.

The NMA chairman said the body also held medical education for rural dwellers on dieting, hypertension, HIV/AIDS and other ailments ravaging the people at the grassroots.

He added that NMA was tightening the noose on quackery with the signing of an agreement with state government for the introduction of accreditation of health facilities to fish out operators of illegal medical centres.

Pleading for the payment of doctors’ salaries, Omoya said: “We are pleading that even if all the arrears won’t be paid, government must bring us as per with our colleague civil servants.

“As we speak now, six months are being owed while civil servants are owed five months. This is causing serious demoralisation to our doctors in all the cadres of health institutions.”

  • Court dissolves 16-year-old marriage between clerics

Court dissolves 16-year-old marriage between clerics

An Ado-Ekiti Customary Court, ‎on Thursday, dissolved a 16-year-old marriage between Mr Emmanuel Jegede and his wife, Olubunmi, both clergymen.

The marriage was dissolved on the grounds of threat to life, provocation, stubbornness, lies and adultery.

The petitioner, Mr Emmanuel Jegede, 41, a clergyman, resident at Irewumi quarters, opposite Bawa Estate, Ado-Ekiti, told the court that the respondent was arrogant, lazy, stubborn and unsupportive.

He explained that the respondent, who gave birth to three children for him, was not willing to work to assist him in taking care of the children’s welfare.

Emmanuel said that she was the only one responsible for the family upkeep including the education of the children.

The petitioner, therefore, pleaded with the court to separate them and award the custody of his three children to him for proper care.

The parties have since January, 2016, stopped living together, as the petitioner had remarried ‎a new wife.

The respondent, Mrs Olubunmi Jegede, 39, a prophetess, trader and resident at No 31, Ifesowapo q‎uarters, off Nova road, Ado-Ekiti, denied all the allegations leveled against her.

She alleged that the petitioner was an adulterous man and that in 2008 alone, he committed adultery with five women in their church.

The respondent added that she even caught more women with the petitioner in their parish.

The mother of three children told the court that for two years, the petitioner abandoned her and the children.

She said the petitioner preferred to drink beer to stupor and smoke cigarette instead of taking good care of her and the children.

Olubunmi said she was responsible for the school fees of their second child, Elizabeth, 6, since 2015 to date.

She consented to the decision of the petitioner that the court should dissolve their marriage.

The respondent, however prayed the court to award the custody of her three children to her for proper care.

The president of the court, Mrs Olayinka Akomolede, observed that the marriage had broken down irretrievably and consequently dissolved the marriage.

She awarded ‎the custody of the three children to the respondent for proper care.

Akomolede ruled that the petitioner would be paying N2, 500 as feeding allowance on each of the three children, beginning on or before Nov. 30 through the court registry.

She further ruled that the petitioner would be responsible for the education of the children at all levels.

However, the court granted the petitioner, unrestricted access to his children between the hours of 8a.m. and 6p.m.

  • Police arrest six suspected rustlers

    Police arrest six suspected rustlers

Operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have arrested six suspected rustlers, who specialize in stealing goats in Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Kwara, Ekiti and Lagos States.

The suspects are: Gani Adeyemi, 29, Kabiru Oladimeji, 50, Alimi Ayodele, 32, Kunle Olasebikan, 45, and Umaru Mohammed, 46.

According to police sources, the suspects had carried out several operations in the neighbouring states, where they stole goats, money, phones and jewelry at gun point.

It was gathered that the suspects lured goats with raw white beans following which they would gag the animals and cart them away in the operational vehicles.

Confessing, Ayodele said: “I am married with three children. I stopped at Senior Secondary three and became a bus driver. I started stealing goats seven years ago when armed robbery became very hard in Lagos.

It was my friend Akube that introduced me into goat stealing. We operated at Osogbo, Oyo, Ilorin, Ijebu. In each of the operations we went home with at least 20 goats. We used to be three in number namely Alimi, Gani, Akube who is still at large. We used to  operate at about from 11p.m to 12 midnight along village roads where goats sleep.

‘’ Gani’s role is to drive our operational vehicle, Akube catches the goats with raw beans while Ayo seals the goat’s mouth. Most of the goats sleep on the road. We were challenged by vigilante men at Iyana Oba in Osogbo where they blocked the road and we exchanged fire with them. We sold the goats to one Kazeem at Mile 12 market (Lagos) at N7,000 each. Kazeem is still at large.

‘’For the 20 goats we got at last operation at Osogbo we got 20 goats and sold 19 for N133,000 and roasted the one that died out of suffocation and celebrated our dinners with it. Out of the N133,000, I paid N20,000 for fuel and N20,000 for vehicle maintenance and shared the balance.

In his confession, Kabiru, whose gang operated in Ojodu Berger, Agbado, Mowe Ibafo and Sango areas of Ogun State said his group stole only three goats on a daily basis.

Kabiru and other members of the gang were however arrested by a police patrol team which also recovered guns from them.

  •  Military not involved in vaccination – FG

Military not involved in vaccination – FG

Federal Government on Wednesday said  the military is not involved in any monkey pox vaccination as presently rumoured.

The rumors had spread like wildfire that the military was injecting monkey pox virus to people in their medical outreach across the country.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole said this when he briefed State House correspondences at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting presided by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He was with the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu and the Special Adviser to the President on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina.

According to him, the eleven states are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Nasarawa and Rivers.

While stressing that outbreak was confirmed in Bayelsa, he said that out of the 19 samples tested, 3 tested positive from Bayelsa 12 tested negative from Bayelsa, and 4 tested negative from Lagos.

He explained that the military  medical outreach has never harm anyone and in some cases involved in road construction and other services.

He said “Council also received an update of the public health of the nation.  We informed Council about the latest development with respect to the Monkey Pox virus outbreak. So far, as of today, there are 74 suspected cases in 11 states of the country. We have confirmed three in Bayelsa state, We are still expecting the results of other ones.

“We are also doing advance test in NEDE,  that is the African Centre of Excellence for Genomes and Infections Disease to really understand the genomes of this virus.  Even when they are negative, the laboratory attendance should be able to tell us what exactly they are. We will also be able to locate and identify the origin so that we can take adequate precaution.” he said

On the military vaccination rumors, he said  “It is also important to use this opportunity to dispel the rumour circulating in the country that the military is vaccinating people and trying to spread monkey pox across the country. The military is not involved in any vaccination exercise and I must also really educate the Nigeria people about how vaccination campaigns are done.

“Federal will take the lead but we do not conduct campaign without involving states.  So, there is no way we will do campaign for vaccination without working with the states and it is the state that will be in front and we provide support.

“The rumour that federal is involved in monkey pox vaccination campaign is not true. And as of today, we are only doing vaccination campaign in three states against other diseases.

“We are doing vaccination campaign against yellow fever in Kwara and Kogi because of yellow fever outbreak in some parts of the country. We are also doing cholera vaccination in Borno state and so anybody carrying the rumour,  please help us educate Nigerians that it is not true. We are not vaccinating anybody, we plan to do missiles campaign very soon and we will also do yellow fever before the end of the year and we will let you know.

“You will never find Federal staff conducting vaccination campaign without the support and active participation of the state ministry of health, this is just to correct the misconception.” he stated

Asked whether he was disowning the  military over the issue, he said “With respect to what the military is doing, I spoke about vaccination and not about military campaign. The military as part of a campaign of winning over the heart and soul of the people havel got engaged in several things. In the past,  the military was noted of even constructed roads, the military will do outreaches, measure blood pressure, talk to people. These are normal things,  I referred only to vaccination.

“We had to request for the assistance of the military in Borno state to reach inaccessible area with respect to the polio campaign so we have worked with the military in the past and we will continue to work with them.

“There are doctors in the military, there are nurses and when you go abroad, some of the best institutions abroad are those ones managed by the military. So we cannot disown the military. But what I want to put across is that the military is not involved in any vaccination.” he said

On the report of illegal traffickers of kidney,  he said “With respect to the harvest of organs we received advice periodically from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, from National Security Adviser about goings on around the world. One of which is the harvest of organ illegally and it is our duty to alert Nigerians that this is ongoing, they should be careful, they should seek advice, they should patronize only accredited institution.

“And as we rebuild our health infrastructure there will be less need for anybody to travel out and so we spare Nigerians the agony of falling victims of some of these illegal practices.”

Speaking on the growing drug abuse among the youth,  he said “We are quite aware of this.  Abuse will take several forms.  Abuse of substances that are smuggled into the country in higher doses than normal. For example we have metadol and tramadol and even Viagra being smuggled into the country. Look at the dosage, the Viagra dosage is three times normal and when you look at the tramadol it is three to four times normal and once NAFDAC officials come in contact, they are impounded and destroyed.

“We are also working with the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria to educate people about the abuses.  We are aware of the abuse of cough mixture because of the content and we are working hard in respect to this.”

Stressing that Nigeria is part of the campaign against tobacco, he said that the country is implementing the framework convention in tobacco control.

“As of Monday we were part of the  ECOWAS meeting to look at how do we raise taxes on tobacco. That meeting we really worked to prevent smuggling on tobacco products, we looked at how we can raise taxes on tobacco products. It is known that Nigeria has one of cheapest tobacco prices in the world and that will contribute to the abuse.  That convention and recommendations coming from there will really contribute to raising taxes on tobacco and also generating resources that will go into health.

The Minister of Water Resources disclosed that the Council also approved the sum of N236 million for the completion of Sabke dam in Katsina state.

He said “One Memo from my ministry was considered today as part of our efforts to improve the hethrege for irrigation, we have been committing ourselves to completing many of the irrigation projects we inherited in the past two years. One of such is the Sabke irrigation project. This is a project that started as far back as 1997 during the PTF days but was abandoned and then reawarded in 2009, completed 95 percent by 2012 and again abandoned.

“When we came into office, I commissioned a technical audit of all the ongoing project and n the ministry and because of the status of that project having attained 95 percent completion,  it became a priority project because it was a low hanging fruit for us to complete.

“Unfortunately, when the contractor was mobilised to site,  we found out that a lot of component of the irrigation project had been vandalized and for us to be able to put that project into effective use,  we now have to do a lot of rehabilitation works and we therefore brought a memo seeking Council to give us an augmentation of about N280m for us to be able to complete the work 100 percent and make it fit for the purpose and Council considered and approved this memo.”

  • Ekiti 2018 and Fayemi

As the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC) formally released timetable for the 2018 governorship election in Ekiti State, tongues are beginning to wag in which direction the pendulum will swing in the state. Although no fewer than 40 aspirants, including prominent names like former Governor Segun Oni, Senators Babafemi Ojudu and Gbenga Aluko, have emerged on the scene, the big conundrum on the horizon in APC is whether the immediate past governor of the state and current Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, is going to throw his hat in the gubernatorial ring.

While it is not clear if Fayemi is keen to do so having spoken about the unfinished business of the 2014 election in the state (in reference to the criminal role of security agencies in that election) and the determined effort of his party to seek judicial review of what has become popularly known as EkitiGate, there is a growing campaign on the part of some of his loyalists that regardless of the outcome of the judicial review, Ekiti needs him to return to rescue her from years of ruin, pillage and pestilence. Even at that, opinion remains divided among political pundits between those who favour his return, as the most prominent and visible politician in APC who has been uncompromising in his opposition to the PDP juggernaut in the state, and the one capable of rallying both local and national support to rout Fayose and those who believe he should stay above the fray and help to determine who gets the APC ticket in the state.

As someone who does not see politics as a ‘do or die’ affair, it is difficult to discern any burning ambition in the minister. Many remember with admiration how he conceded defeat in the controversial 2014 election in a manner atypical of an average Nigerian politician. Every time he is asked the million dollar question as to whether he plans to return to Ekiti, he has always insisted that he has a job courtesy of the President’s good gesture and he is committed to the success of the Buhari administration. He remains one of the most trusted “Buharists” from the South-west zone and it is almost certain that if the President is positive about him running as part of a bigger picture in the 2019 plans, he will do it. Equally, if the President says that he still needs him in Abuja – as part of plans to consolidate the Buhari administration, it is difficult to see him do otherwise.

There is of course little doubt that he clearly has a pride of place in President Buhari’s heart ever since he conducted the well regarded December 2014 Presidential primaries that gave candidate Buhari the APC ticket. And since his appointment as a Minister against all the odds, he appears to have remained strongly in the good books of his boss.

To confirm his pride of place in President Buhari’s heart, virtually every federal appointment from his state has been ceded to him. In fact, only two appointments from Ekiti appeared not to have had his imprimatur – that of the Political Adviser to the President in the office of the Vice President, Senator Babafemi Ojudu and the Chairman of the Board of Nigeria Ports Authority – Emmanuel Adesoye. Apart from Lagos and Ogun States, Ekiti boasts of the highest number of appointees from the South West so far.

Beyond this, he has also used his position in government to gain concession for the inclusion of Ekiti State into the Western Standard Gauge Rail Line and also attracted the construction of the Federal Secretariat in Ado Ekiti. Only recently too, he facilitated relief materials for flood victims in the state through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). This is in addition to other Ekiti sons and daughters he has assisted with employment in various institutions of state.

His involvement in promoting the Buhari brand in the political realm has not deterred him from expanding the importance of a hitherto redundant solid minerals sector in the nation’s economy. Since assuming duty in November 2015, he has worked so hard to re-position the sector and use it as a vehicle for President Buhari’s diversification agenda. Some of his achievements include the new roadmap for the sector, enhanced geological data, increased revenue generation, financial support for artisanal and small scale miners, improved cooperation between the federal government, states and host communities in mineral resources development, improved transparency in the sector and a determined enforcement of the laws and regulations undergirding the sector, thus improving investor confidence.

He has also been very supportive in the President’s foreign policy agenda, helping with the campaigns of Nigeria’s candidates for key positions in international organisations and also with the President’s programmes in the annual United Nations’ General Assembly amongst other mostly unreported assignments. His commitment to the success of the Buhari administration is a matter beyond debate and his optimism that the administration will laugh last is infectious even if it runs counter to the feelings on the opposing side.

Although his focus has often been party unity and effective mobilization of party members in Ekiti State ever since he left office, Ekiti APC has not been immune to internal challenges. This probably informed the minister’s regular convening of quarterly meetings of Ward, LGA and State executives of the party since December 2015 barely a month after assuming duties as the minister representing Ekiti and these meetings have been held consistently. The last edition took place a couple of weeks ago at his Isan Ekiti country home. At the September meeting, he was reported to have reiterated his well-known position on party unity and commended those who have expressed interest in running for office as great mobilisers that have kept the spirit of party and members alive. Many had predicted that he was going to use the September 30 meeting to announce his interest in the race, but this did not happen even as some followers openly demanded for this.

This uncertainty on whether he will run or not has thrown many into confusion even as the ruling party has gone ahead to announce Dr Olusola Eleka, currently the deputy governor, as its candidate for the 2018 governorship election. Yet if there is one candidate the incumbent governor seems mortally afraid of contemplating as the flagbearer of the APC and eventual successor, it is the Fayemi. This seemed to have informed every effort to nail him via petitions to EFCC and the setting up of a hurried judicial commission of inquiry in the state. Unfortunately for Governor Fayose, many of the claims taken before the EFCC and the judicial panelanel in the state appear to have been dead on arrival. For example, the claim that Fayemi stole N852million SUBEB fund had been debunked by Access Bank that provided the counterpart fund. The Ado Ekiti Manager of the bank testifying before the Panel of Inquiry confirmed that the bank recalled the money when there was no agreement with the Fayose administration on the terms and conditions of the loan. An investigation panel set up by Governor Fayose and chaired by the retired Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Ademola Ajakaiye also absolved Fayemi of any malfeasance on SUBEB funds. Equally, the claim that he misappropriated the N25 billion bond taken by his administration for infrastructure development has proved to be a red herring given the physical evidence of the various projects and the independently audited evidence of judicious utilization of the resources obtained.

With the INEC timetable released, it would not be long before the conundrum in the state is resolved. Inevitably, Fayemi will have to express the intention, if he has any, within the timeframe stipulated by INEC. Whether he runs or not, it is clear the last has not been heard of this urbane intellectual who sees politics and leadership as service and sacrifice, not ambition and opportunism.
