Tale of Ekiti community’s mystery stones

SOME call it a mystery town, while others refer to the town as a place blessed with huge mineral resources. But the king’s palace which is worth visiting has been the cynosure of all eyes  despite the high level of education of the townsmen, for  they still use stones to count the number of their past monarchs.

Not only this , the town , Ijero, is the only town in Yoruba land that has the masquerade called  Aje (  witch/wizard) which comes out annually .

On how Aje came to be , the monarch said: “In the days of old when children were falling sick and some were dying, our forefathers brought Aje out to come and rescue the town, and since it cured people and released  them from their  bondage, it was turned into a god being worshipped.  Whoever is ill is healed, while progress comes to the town  and it wades off calamity from the land. That is why we have been celebrating and worshipping Aje. we also called it Ako Egungun (husband of all the Egungun).

    Eegun Aje
    Eegun Aje

The arrival and mere seeing Aje charges everywhere as there are cries of happiness immediately he is sighted on its arrival from ‘heaven,’  while many run to it to be whipped with its cane. Many beg it to cane them. A young man , Yemi Olutayo, said he offered himself to be caned to receive its blessing.

“I am glad for having the opportunity to be caned. It is a physical and spiritual blessing .I know it has answered my prayers  and my life cannot be the same again as things will improve for me next year”.

Joshua Oyewande  Olukolade ,an educationist, boasted that the palace would soon be a tourist centre where people would come from different places to visit in the nearest future.

He argued that despite their high level of education, their system or method of  keeping of dates and numbers cannot be erased as one could see  how they keep number of the monarchs that had passed on.

With the palace’s fantastic architectural design, it can  boast of having a museum as the monarch and some eminent persons in   the town are pleading to the state and federal government to come and see what their forefathers had done.

    OSIRIGBONGBO

At the centre of the town is a giant statue of one of the founding fathers of the town, holding a small  gourd and a sword in his pouch which is strapped on his side .

The  statue of OSIRIGBONGBO who was a warrior  is highly respected and honoured , though it is at the centre of the town where some people offer sacrifices. Some use it as a  meeting point and, of course, where town criers make necessary announcements.

One thing is still certain. The statue is revered and in terms of problems, the man is offered sacrifice.  It is at this place that social activities take place. An educationist and one of the community  leaders, Joshua Oyewande  Olukolade, described  how Osirigbongbo looked like.

He said: “The man , Osirigbongbo, according to our forefathers, was a  giant  with intimidating stature. Being a warrior , Osirigbongbo was always ready to rescue the town from being plundered and taken into captivity”.

    Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti
    Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti

The town’s monarch, the Ajero  of Ijero, Oba Joseph Adebayo Adewole,  said: ” The story of this man is mysterious , as legend has it that he was  the giant warlord  that no one had the effrontery to look at his face. No man ever has  the measurement of his height as he was the tallest man in the community, as no one could reach his shoulder. He was said to be so powerful that his men used pestle to wake him up”, the monarch stated with authority.

The monarch continued: “On his war exploits, Osirigbongbo would go to war without war tools .When he gets  to the hottest war zone, he would go for the leader of his enemies and use his bare hands to tear him  apart and would use his victim’s torn legs to be fighting in the war”.

On the mysterious man’s feeding  , the monarch said: ” We were informed by our forefathers that the Osirigbongbo used to eat  a morsel with the head of a cow. He was said to have a giant muzzle. He never prepared any weapons like arrow, cutlass, knife whatsoever, but depended on his magical power .Legend says when he goes to any war he would go straight to the leader (enemy) , seize his ammunition and would tear the man’s body which he would use as his tool to fight .He ate a morsel of pounded yam with the head of a cow. They use pestle to wake him up .Many strange stories  were said about him.

    Mysterious Stones

Outside Alajero’s palace is a sacred place where tourists go to and it is kept sacred , while it is kept neat always .According to the monarch, each stone represents a king that had passed away , he said ,counting the number of stones there.

“If you start  counting the stones one, two, three, you would miss it and will never be able to finish counting them as you would get confused. And if you go back  and start  counting again, you will get confused no matter how smart or brilliant you are.

“No man knows the number of the stones deposited here. But it is only the olori ( wives of the king) and the monarch that know  the number. The place is a sacred place and one must not go there, or throw things or rubbish into the place, and whoever does that would see its repercussion. No one ever tries  it”, he said .

Still on the stones , the king said: “The sacred place where we keep stones started long time ago when our forefathers were not educated. Whenever a king dies, the community would place a stone there .So if you want to know how many kings that had passed away, you will have to count the number of stones.  Despite our civilization , education and modern world, we refused to jettison the idea .When I pass away too, a stone would be placed there.”.

    Tree

A big tree has been there for more than 800 years. It is called ISAGUN. According to the monarch, “it is a special place where princes  and princess go to for initiation when they are being welcomed  into the royal family .They   must go round the tree seven times,  wearing white apparels and this is an initiation into the royal house .Its like a church where they observe baptism and confirmation .Anybody that does not do that is not considered to be from a royal house  and cannot publicly claim this”.

    Eyekun-Aafin

A statue at the shrine shows the sculptor of a woman with  beads on her neck and holding a cloth. According to Yewande ,  Ijero will never forget the woman in  a hurry because of her contribution to the town . According to the monarch, she was  the woman who started using stones to list the number of monarchs that passed on. She was a great woman warrior. ”

    17th shrine

The monarch claimed that the town has 16 shrines, but when he came to the throne  in 1991 he added another one to make it the 17th one. He said: “ We  have about 16 shrines here, but it has become 17 and that is the church I go”.

According to him, the town has shrines for the  Ogun, Masquerade, Esu and so on, while  we all belong to the supreme deity .But when  I was enthroned,  I built another shrine , and that is a church where I worship God who is the Supreme Being ”

Asked how he manages to practise  the three religions , he said since he is the head of the community ,he then belongs to all the three major religions , and when it is time to offer sacrifices, he would supply all the needs and give them to the chief priest of the town .

“I supply  their needs for sacrifice  .Since I am the community head. I am a Christian, but I observe all the religions, including the African tradition religion. It is part of our culture and we cannot stop it”.

Joshua Oyewande  Olukolade said if the federal and state governments could invest in tourism in the town, many would be employed.

He said: ” China , Kenya and some countries make a lot money from tourism. We should emulate these countries. Nigeria is blessed with all these. I believe we would still get there. It is only a matter of time”.

  • Jubilation in Ekiti over Fayemi’s nomination

Jubilation in Ekiti over Fayemi’s nomination

There was jubilation in Ekiti State yesterday, following the announcement of former Governor Kayode Fayemi as a ministerial nominee.

Some residents of Ado Ekiti and All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters and civil servants stayed glued to their television sets to monitor the reading of the letter conveying the list by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

APC members milled around the party secretariat in Ado-Ekiti singing, dancing and congratulating one another on the nomination of the ex-governor, which they believed would benefit the party and the state.

Some eminent citizens have been congratulating Fayemi on his nomination, urging him to use his position to add value to governance in Nigeria.

State Chairman Olajide Awe urged Fayemi to strengthen the template for modern governance anchored on human development to contribute his quota to national development.

From the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti, Rev Felix Ajakaye, came an advice to Fayemi to use his God-given gifts and talents to “concretely and meaningfully” make a positive impact in the service of the nation.

The cleric enjoined the former governor “to continue to serve God and humanity with humility and to keep using your God-given talents for the common good”.

The monarch of Fayemi’s hometown, the Onisan of Isan-Ekiti, Oba Sunday Owolabi Ajiboye, described his subject’s nomination as the “beginning of greater heights in life which affords him another opportunity to advance the course of governance”.

The monarch said: “This is a new beginning of greater heights in your life, which we believe you will exploit to advance the course of representative governance anchored on human development, which you championed over the years in your journey to political governance.”

For former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Director, Samuel Bandele Falegan, Fayemi’s nomination presented “the second time within five years that my joy is full to the brim”.

The elder statesman said he was convinced that Fayemi’s nomination was a reward by God for dedication to selfless service to humanity and loyalty to his party, even as he said the legacy projects by the former governor had sold him beyond Ekiti frontiers.

The Alare of Are-Ekiti, Oba Boluwade Adebiyi, described Fayemi as “a politician of no mean stature, a complete gentleman, a child of destiny” and asked him to maintain the attributes in the service of the nation.

The Olupole of Ipole-Iloro, Oba Ezekiel Babatola Oladele, said: “God never closes a window without opening a door and God does not take anything from us without giving another.”

He urged Fayemi to dedicate his life to God in the service to humanity.

President, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Ekiti State Branch, Yakubu Sanni, said Fayemi’s legacy projects would remain unparalleled.

Sanni praised him for promoting Islam through the approval of hijab for female pupils and appointing Muslims into top positions of government.

Members of the Association of Traders and Market Leaders of Nigeria said they were happy that Fayemi as a proud son of Ekiti State “has never put us to shame”.

In his words, the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi, said Fayemi’s nomination was an attestation to his record of excellence.

  • Ekiti gets industrial court

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria will soon commence sitting in Ekiti State. The state has provided temporary site for the court and accommodation for the Judge.

Besides, government is expected to provide land to  serve as the court’s permanent site within the next three months.

Before now, those who have cases at the court used to travel to Akure, the Ondo State capital but the latest development is expected to give them relief.

Governor Ayo Fayose has pledged to do everything possible to support the court to function well and bring justice nearer to the people.

He spoke while receiving the President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, who visited him.

Fayose said: “When I got the wind of your court coming to Ekiti, I did not waste time to take advantage of the visit.

“Everybody can manage infrastructural development, but not all can manage human resources. We are saving a lot of resources by bringing the court here.

“We will look for land for permanent site for your court within three months and we have shown you the accommodation for the Judge that will be here.”

Responding, Adejumo expressed satisfaction with the temporary site provided for the court and the judge’s residence.

Adejumo said: “Lawyers and litigants having matters relating with us have been going to Akure but that is not tidy and safe enough. Thank you for the quick approval of our requests.

“We will be asking for a land for us to build our court complex. Within the next two months, we will start operating. We will do justice to all manner of people. We are to ensure industrial harmony in the country.”

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, said the court already had divisions in 26 states of the federation.

  • Ekiti government denies appointing PDP members into SIEC

Ekiti State government has denied appointing card-carrying members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) for the purpose of conducting the local government election.

The state’s Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kolapo Kolade, said the allegation is false and unfounded, insisting that SIEC members are non-partisan and credible individuals whose integrity cannot be questioned by anybody.

Kolade, who spoke on Tuesday at a briefing on the activities of his ministry in the last one year, said the SIEC, as presently constituted, is an impartial and unbiased umpire to conduct a credible council poll on December 19.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has filed a suit challenging the composition of SIEC, claiming that the electoral agency is composed of card-carrying PDP members.

Kolade said the conduct of the local government poll would offer what he called “a clear break from the present caretaker committee arrangement which has been in place since 2010.”

He disclosed that the ministry had in the last one year settled chieftaincy matters in some communities as well as some boundary disputes to ensure peace in the state.

The commissioner revealed that the Ayo Fayose administration had peacefully resolved kingship tussles in nine communities which had been without monarchs owing to interests from certain quarters.

  • Security alert over protests in Ekiti, Rivers

Security alert over protests in Ekiti, Rivers

Security agencies have been placed on the alert following the uncovering of plots to sponsor protests against some ministerial nominees.

Also, there were indications last night that Mrs. Amina Mohammed, Special Adviser to the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, has accepted her nomination for a ministerial job.

President Muhamadu Buhari is said to have rejected lobbyists seeking to be Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He has reportedly directed Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, who is a minister- designate to retain the portfolio.

Kachikwu is listed to be the Minister of State for petroleum Resources because the President has said he will be the minister of Petroleum – a decision that has been criticised by some legal experts that it is not backed by the law.

The Senate is expected to unveil the ministerial nominees’ list tomorrow and release the screeing plan.

Some governors and opposition elements plan to scuttle the screening of some ministerial nominees.

Besides, some former governors are said to be unhappy with some nominees.

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in some states are also believed to be aggrieved.

The states are Rivers, Ekiti, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Gombe and Kwara.

Some of the targeted nominees include ex-Governors Rotimi Amaechi and Kayode Fayemi, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, Udoma Udo-Udoma, and Abubakar Malami.

It was gathered that security agencies have discovered that those opposed to these nominees have perfected their plans, including public demonstrations to call for the rejection of the nominees.

A source said: “Security agencies have uncovered plans by some elements in the opposition and a few stakeholders to launch vicious political attacks against some ministerial nominees.

“Some of these elements are even plotting to disrupt the public peace in Abuja because of the inclusion of some technocrats and independent-minded nominees. They are aggrieved because the President didn’t go for political candidates.

“Their attempt is to rubbish the President’s choices under the guise of opposing some nominees.

“Some governors have so far been implicated in the would-be protests.”

Another source said: “ Some loyalists of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike are planning a protest at the National Assembly this week against former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s nomination.

“We have reliable information that they have set aside N350million to execute this invidious plot.

“What is worrisome is that Wike’s loyalists are doing this at a time Rivers State children have been locked out of schools because of the state government’s refusal to pay salaries.”

The source also alleged that some PDP stalwarts met with a group of senators from the party to ‘pay back Amaechi in his own coin’ for defecting from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The PDP is already advising its members in Rivers and Ekiti states to reject the nominees appointed by the President , “ the source said.

But the APC in Rivers State may resist attempts by Wike’s loyalists to march on Abuja against Amaechi.

“Security agencies are very concerned about the possibility of the Rivers crisis spilling over into the FCT, Abuja,” another source said.

Rivers State APC chairman Chief  Davies Ibiamu Ikanya admitted that he had heard about the planned protest and had told his members to be prepared. He said: “The APC in Rivers State has borne with equanimity all the numerous attacks by the PDP and its leadership against our leader and former Governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi.

“It is sad indeed as the former governor, has done nothing to deserve such evil behaviour. We have decided as a party that we will no longer keep silent. We will match the PDP action for action and word for word.”

Mrs Mohammed is said to have accepted her ministerial nomination.

A Presidency source said: “After personal discussions and interaction with Ban Ki-Moon, Ms Mohammed has accepted her appointment. She was on her way from New York to Nigeria yesterday in preparation for documentation and screening.

The Office of the Chief of Staff was busy yesterday preparing the profiles of the ministerial nominees for the Senate.

It was learnt last night that the President had rejected lobbyists seeking to be the GMD of NNPC and directed Dr. Kachikwu to retain the portfolio.

A Presidency source said: “The President met with the GMD of NNPC at the weekend and assured him that he would combine the portfolio with that of a minister of state.

“Buhari said he would honour all the conditions which made him to secure the services of Kachikwu from a high profile job in ExxonMobil.

“The President has shut his doors against lobbyists for the GMD’s job.”

  • Ekiti teachers condemn seizure of membership dues

    •Unions clash over Teachers’ Day

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in Ekiti State  has decried its exclusion from the World Teachers’ Day celebration today.

The union said the  government owes its members arrears of 13 months of membership dues.

ASUSS accused the state wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) of blackmailing it before Governor Ayo Fayose, which made his administration not to recognise the union.

State ASUSS Chairman Olusola Adigun, in a statement yesterday, said the “union was worried that the governor had allowed the NUT to influence him to openly hate us as we celebrate our day”.

Adigun affirmed that ASUSS has been legalised to unionise secondary school teachers through the approval of the  Ministry of  Labour and Productivity.

The state NUT Chairman, Kayode Akosile, at a briefing last Wednesday,  described  ASUSS “as an illegal body”.

He accused “ex-governor Kayode Fayemi of breaching the law to recognise it ”.

Akosile said: “Before any union can operate, it has to be registered by the Registrar of  Trade Unions in Abuja.

Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola did not recognise ASUSS. He told members that as a senior lawyer that he could not breach the law. So, ASUSS to us,  is an illegal body.”

But Adigun countered: “It is highly disappointing to see our governor`s preference for NUT,  particularly in the  preparation for the Teachers’ Day celebration.

“Our members have complained bitterly of their exclusion from the last education summit,  even though our members are the ones to implement the outcome in  secondary schools.

“In view of the wicked roles which the NUT has been playing to make sure that we are not recognised in the  Fayose administration, we want to state that Ekiti NUT is the biblical Cain, who killed his brother Abel, ASUSS .

“The NUT has been inciting the people against us, telling them that we are not legally constituted and that we don’t have the legal rights to membership dues.

“We wish  to point it out that ASUSS has won more than 50 court judgments  against the NUT and the most recent one, at the National industrial Court of Nigeria, Enugu, last December 2.

“In that judgment, Justice A. Ibrahim held that ‘the rights of the claimant (NUT) to collect checkup dues; or subscription; is limited to its members; it is only the claimant’s members who are obliged to pay membership dues or subscription dues’.

“The court pointed out that ‘there is nothing averred to show that secondary school teachers are members of the claimant and therefore their contributions, whether as check off dues or subscriptions, belong to the claimant and cannot be taken away from it (ASUSS)’.

“The judge, therefore, submitted that ‘on the whole the preliminary objection of the first defendant succeeds as I uphold the submission that the claimant lack locus standi to bring this action. I further uphold the interlocutory order of the court on the funds kept in an account on the orders of the court made on July 27, 2012. The suit is accordingly hereby struck out’.

“Equally, the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice has given two  legal advice in 2011 and 2012 that ASUSS has the right to exist and to collect dues from its members, and which the government has obeyed until recently.

“Despite our financial constraint, we went ahead to celebrate our annual award day amidst funfair in commemoration of the  teachers day, where 40 ASUSS teacher-retirees were feted with gifts, 16 students who emerged the best in the ASUSS annual essays in each local government were given both cash and books. e ASUSS also paid for the WASSCE fees of the overall best pupil in the state”.

  • ‘Jail Ekiti housing boss’

Residents and house owners in Irewolede (Fajuyi) Estate in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, have asked the State High Court in Ado-Ekiti to jail the General Manager of Ekiti Housing Corporation, Babasoji Awe, for alleged contempt of court.

The house owners/claimants went to court, challenging the revocation of their houses purchased on a mortgage agreement but which Governor Ayodele Fayose wanted paid within a month.

The plaintiffs claimed in the contempt charge that Awe, a lawyer, was duly served.

Their counsel, Rafiu Balogun, said his clients have begun the suit vide a Writ of Summons and accompanied with other processes and documents and the defendants were duly served.

“The second defendant (Awe) has served the house owners with the letters of revocation, and shamefully and with impunity, they were given seven days to vacate their respective houses,” Balogun said.

Pleading with the court to act in defence of justice, Balogun noted: “We all know what is going to happen after the expiration of the seven days ultimatum; the government will forcefully eject them against the spirit and the intendment of the pending matter.

“This is an affront to the rule of law and a despicable attempt to foist a fait accompli on court and that must not be allowed to happen again in this country.”

  • Students protest Ekiti education policies

    Students protest Ekiti education policies

Ekiti State students are angry with Governor Ayo Fayose over what they call his “anti-education policies” and attempts to take education out of the reach of the poor.

Acting under the aegis of the Federation of Ekiti State Students Union (FESSU) and the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), they condemned the scrapping of free education by the Fayose administration.

The placard-carrying students, who came from the state-owned tertiary institutions, poured into the streets of Ado Ekiti at 8.30 am yesterday, singing anti-government songs.

Some of their placards read: “Ekiti students pass vote of no confidence in Fayose”; “Primary/secondary education must be free in Ekiti”; “Ekiti bursary, nothing but a scam”; “Blackout in Ekiti State University”; “College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti fees must be reduced”; “No to N50,000 acceptance fee at College of Health Technology, Ijero”; “Don’t stop payment of WASSCE fees for poor students” and “we reject exclusion from education summit”, among others.

They said they chose to protest on the state’s 19th anniversary to send a message that all is not well in the state and to kick against “bad government policies” in education.

The students marched from Ajilosun, stopping at various junctions to address the public.

They added that they would be forced to continue the protest, until Fayose acceded to their demands.

The march caused a huge traffic snarl at Ijigbo Roundabout. Some officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) were there to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the protest.

Addressing reporters, FESSU’s National President Peter Obayemi lamented that students no longer had access to bursary from the government.

He accused officials of the scholarship board of underhand dealings.

Obayemi said he was detained for agitating  the payment of bursary.

He said the student bodies would no longer tolerate intimidation by any government official.

The student leader said the Fayose administration had declared a war on students by its actions.

Obayemi said: “We should let the world know that the government has neglected students. It organised an Education Summit and refused to invite students and instead invited artisans, motorcyclists and traders.

“We are saying no to privatisation of public schools in Ekiti.  We reject all sorts of fees that have been reintroduced in public schools.

“Government used to pay WASSCE fees for pupils before; this government says it will no longer pay. We reject all these anti-education policies.

“Many students have lost the joy of being admitted to the College of Science and Health Technology, Ijero- Ekiti as they were unable to pay the N50,000 acceptance fee before the deadline.

“The Ijero College of Health Science and Technology is the only school in Nigeria paying such an outrageous acceptance fee, which does not guarantee their admission.”

A NANS executive member, Oluwabunmi Aduloju, condemned the detention of the FESSU boss.

He also criticised a policy introduced by the scholarship board that all students of Ekiti origin must travel  to Ado-Ekiti to collect their bursaries.

The Vice-President of Ekiti State University (EKSU) Student Union Government, Sunmisola Ogunleye, said the campus had been in darkness for 11 months without any action by the governor, who is the university’s Visitor.

She said: “In the last one year, EKSU students have been in darkness and all attempts to address the issue have proved abortive.

“The community has even used the privilege to extort money from the students who donated N1,000 per head for the restoration of electricity, yet nothing was done by either the government or the management of the institution.

“Unfortunately, the student area affected by the blackout is the constituency of governor, his chief of staff, commissioner for Budget and Planning.”

Commissioner for Information Lanre Ogunsuyi described the protest as “unnecessary”.

He alleged that the students were sponsored by the opposition.

The commissioner said the Fayose administration wanted to make the bursary scheme more transparent.

He said the government would not be distracted.

  • Ekiti lawmakers visit College of Medicine

Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly Committee on Health led by the Chairman, Dr. Samuel Omotosho, have paid a working visit to the Ekiti State University College of Medicine.

The committee, who toured the facilities in the college okayed the job done at the Biochemistry, Pharmacology departments, Medical Library complex and Animal House.

Omotoso expressed satisfaction with the accreditation of the College by the National Universities Commission (NUC). He added that the committee wants information on the admission of students into the college and other requirements for its growth.

The Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Kehinde Oluwadiya, assured them that the  College would leave no stone unturned to ensure quality and standard.

  • Ekiti has received N9.6b bailout cash, says Fayose

Ekiti has received N9.6b bailout cash, says Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has clarified that the state only got N9.6 billion out of the over N29 billion it applied for in the Federal Government’s bail-out funds for states.

The governor, who spoke on Monday in Ikogosi-Ekiti during the opening ceremony of a two-day retreat for commissioners, permanent secretaries and heads of agencies, also said out of the N5.6 billion applied for by the 16 local governments in the state, the FG only approved N991 million.

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor made the clarification following insinuations that the state government did not want to pay pensions arrears and gratuities of retirees.

“You people know that I don’t hide anything from you when allocations come. We applied for N29 billion from the bail-out fund. It is to cover the August and September 2014 salary arrears left by the Fayemi government, leave bonus, pensions, gratuities and others. But for reasons we don’t know yet, the FG only approved N9.6 billion for salaries leaving other issues.

“The 16 local governments applied for N5.6 billion and we did all the necessary papers and presented them to the appropriate authorities, but only N991 million was approved. We were later told by the Central Bank of Nigeria that about 14 states had similar problem with the small amount approved for local governments.

“I have since written to them to rectify the situation and I hope they will do that quickly. It is only the Federal Government that can explain why they only approved one item, salary, out of the many items we presented to them on the workers’ issue.

“We have nothing to hide and people should appeal to the FG to release the money in full. We know it is loan that we will repay with nine per cent interest,” he said.

The governor also explained that the state had experienced a sharp decline in monthly allocations in recent time.

“Last month we had a shortfall of N500 million and this month we have a shortfall of N600 million. The economy is dwindling and in bad shape and the Federal Government must do something about it urgently,” he noted.

The governor also gave the assurance that there would be transparency in the disbursement of the CBN’s N2 billion loans to small and medium scale enterprises as soon as the state receives it.

He urged participants and civil servants to be loyal, committed and dedicated to their duties.

He promised a conducive atmosphere for them to work and motivation to deserving ones.

The Head of Service, Dr Gbenga Faseluka, expressed the determination of public servants to put in their best.
