Eko 2012 medical report will be released soon – CMD

The Chief Medical Director of the just-concluded 18th National Sport Festival (NSF) in Lagos, Dr. Akin George, said a comprehensive medical report of activities at the games will be released soon.

George told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that proper documentation of medical activities at the festival would take time to compile because the relevant officials would come from the various centres where they were deployed to.

According to him, all centres have been urged to ensure that reports were properly collated to serve as guide for future events.

“We have been able to gather the data from all the venues now, which as I have shown you, they are being analysed for a proper documentation.

“And I think this will take some time because you can imagine the number of people that we have seen.

“A place like UNILAG sees an average of 150 patients a day, throughout the competition.

“Even up to this morning when the camps are supposed to have been closed, we still had people coming in, I had to tell them that the festival was over and we have to go back to our various institutions to do our normal work.

“You will get the proper analysis of this when they are ready,” George told NAN.

Eko 2012: LOC pledges adequate food supply for contingents

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the ongoing 18th National Sport Festival in Lagos on Wednesday pledged adequate food supply for contingents at the various Games’ Villages.

Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, Secretary, Catering and Feeding Sub-Committee of the LOC, made the pledge during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Oluwasanmi, who was reacting to alleged food shortages at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, assured that the issue had been resolved.

“The alleged shortage of food at the FCE Games Village, as well as other locations, are due to the unexpected increase in the number of contingents at the Villages.

“For instance the LOC made provision for the feeding of 300 athletes at the FCE, but the number has more than doubled due to the inclusion of Ogun and Abuja contingents at the village,“ Oluwasanmi said.

NAN reports that contingents at the FCE before the intervention of the LOC, have been feeding at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Games Village, due to shortage of food at the FCE.

NAN learnt that the shortage of food at the FCE Games Village was due to the large number of contingents at the village, who now turned out to be much more than the volume of food provided there.

“The increase at the FCE was due to the unexpected addition of about 400 athletes from Ogun and Abuja.

“The two contingents were not initially scheduled to stay at the FCE, but at the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba,” she said.

Oluwasanmi added that the two contingents had since been relocated to the FCE, since they reportedly said that they would prefer to be at the FCE Games Village.

The secretary said that two more caterers were being added to the four already at the FCE, to ensure adequate provision of food for the excess number of contingents now at the village.

The four caterers at the FCE village are: Mrs Rita Moyo of Riyo Ventures Ltd., Mrs Kehinde Majekodunmi, of Ketis Outlook Catering Services, Mrs Abosede Bademosi of D.T.S. Catering Services and Mrs Kikelomo Giwati of Kyke-Fem Catering Ventures.

They all told NAN that the LOC had charged them to prepare food for a specific number of contingents at the village, but that the unexpected upsurge in the number of contingents at the village was beyond their capacity. (NAN)

  • Eko 2012: MOC okays preparation as zonal qualifiers kick off

AFTER inspecting facilities designated for the 18th National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012, the Main Organising Committee (MOC) has expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation by Lagos State.

The MOC led by its Secretary-General, Abba Yola told journalists after inspecting venues such as Onikan Stadium, Rowe Park Sports Centre and Teslim Balogun Stadium that he was satisfied with the level of work being carried out at the venues.

He, however, urged the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to ensure that work is speeded up in all the venues in order to ensure that the facilities are fully ready for the festival in November. The MOC scribe said: The Onikan stadium renovations are going on well, the only problem is the pitch and I think they need more hands to remove the weeds that are growing there so that they can plant the grass and beautify the place.

Also, removing the weeds is not something that a machine can do, so they would need more manpower in removing the weeds. Aside from that, I think work there is going on well and the manager has promised that we would get results by the end of the month. We would be getting in touch with the contractor to ensure that more people are employed to do this so that they can meet up with the timeline.

He added: “The work at Rowe Park is moving on well because I can see that they have done about 70 per cent of the job and I am particularly impressed with the facilities put in place for the physically-challenged athletes that would be taking part in the games. Teslim Balogun Stadium is going on very well and I am quite impressed with the facilities on ground, all they need to do now is make some minor adjustments and the stadium is ready for the games.”

He however, said: The renovations are going on well, just that things have to move fasters because of the lack of time. We have been assured by the people in charge that by the end of the month renovations would be almost done. The renovation of the secretariat, I can say is 99 per cent complete; all the offices are set and all the equipments needed are in place and I have to commend the LOC Secretary-General for his efforts in seeing that things are up and running.”

For the LOC scribe, Kweku Tandoh, the renovation work would be completed as at when due.
