  • U.S. acquires land at Eko Atlantic City

The United States (U.S.) Embassy has acquired 50,000 square meters from the developer of Eko Atlantic City, Messrs South Energyx Nigeria Limited.

During the signing of the agreement, the U.S. Consul-General, John Bray, said Eko Atlantic City was selected for its world-class infrastructure and other important features.

He said the purchase is a 200 year lease and demonstrates U.S. trust in Nigeria and her people and a signal of a long time commitment to the country.

He declined to give the price of prime property.

He said the purchase demonstrated America’s believe in the economic development of the country and Lagos in particular. On type of structure the embassy is planning to erect, Bray said it will depend on what the architects come up with.

He said: “We will write to our home government which will be followed with the architects coming in to look at our processes and what we do. After that initial process, they will come up with what will suit our operations. Our current building in Walter Carrington is no longer suitable for our operation that is the major reason we are making this bold move. We want to serve anybody with reason to come to us in a conducive atmosphere that suits the moment.”

In his remarks Chairman, Eko Atlantic City, Mr. Gilbert Chagoury who was elated, said the city has been hosting big clients. Asked if the U.S Embassy is its biggest client, he said no, stating that there are bigger clients. He however, said part of the reasons the embassy bought into the project is the confidence reposed in the totality of the project.

  • US Embassy buys 50,000 sqm from Eko Atlantic city

Eko Atlantic City is not a common place for plots but a haven for the super-rich and corporate bigwigs.

The Nation checks revealed that current land prices in this exclusive enclave are now U$1,800 per square meter for inner city plots while plots located along the road and waterfront are significantly higher at US$2,500 per square meter and US$3,000 per square meter respectively.

The latest entry into the exclusive enclave is the United States of America Embassy in Lagos that acquired 50,000 square meters from the Developer, Messrs South Energyx Nigeria Limited.

At the signing ceremony on Tuesday, the U.S Consul General F. John Bray said Eko Atlantic City was selected for its world-class infrastructure and other important features.

He said the purchase is a 200 year lease which demonstrates their belief in Nigeria and her people and a signal of a long time commitment.

Though he declined to give the asking price but a rough calculation of 50,000 square meters at $3,000.00 comes to about $1.5 million.

Chairman, Eko Atlantic City, Mr. Ronald Chagoury who was elated at the turn up of events, said the city has been hosting big clients.

Asked if the U.S Embassy is their biggest client he said no, stating they have bigger clients.

He however, maintained that part of the reason the embassy bought into the dream is as a result of the confidence they have in the totality of the project.

On when the city will be completed, he responded that currently they are reclaiming and building infrastructure which will take up to 5 years.

He cited an example with Victoria Island which started developing in 1967 and is still developing.

  • Ambode assures of greater benefits for Lagosians in 2019

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has assured of more life changing projects in 2019 for the greater benefit of Lagosians.

Ambode gave the assurance in his New Year message to Lagosians at the grand finale of the 2018 One Lagos Fiesta (OLF) held at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island on the eve of the New Year

He said though 2018 was a great year for the State, the New Year holds greater promises for all.

“I want to thank God for giving us this New Year and also thank all residents of the State for being peaceful and for cooperating with our government in delivering services in 2018 and we are ready to take Lagos to the next level.”

On expectations for Lagos, the governor said irrespective of the fact that 2019 is an election year, the State would witness more prosperity as the enabling environment for the economy to thrive had already been firmly established.

“I want you to know that 2019 has a lot in stock for all of us and we must stand up for a better Nigeria and a greater Lagos.

“I believe the GDP of Lagos will grow and I believe irrespective of what is happening, Lagos remains the most prosperous State in Nigeria and it can only get better,” he said.

The Governor attributed the successes his administration has recorded in the last few years to the sterling efforts of security agencies in keeping the city safe, adding that the State has emerged as the safest place to live in Africa.

He also assured that he would leave no stone unturned to ensure that ongoing capital projects across the State would be completed before the expiration of his tenure in May.

“The modest successes we have recorded would not have been possible without the efforts of security agencies in the State.

“I want to appreciate the efforts of security agencies for their dogged contribution in making our State the safest place to live in the country and Africa right now.

“Let me also assure residents that we are committed to their well-being, security and safety. We also want to assure that we are committed to completing all on-going projects before the end of May,” the governor said.

The Governor said he was thrilled that the OLF was meeting the set objectives, saying that the positive impact of the fiesta on the economy of the State had been massive and encouraging.

“The positive economic impact of the fiesta is very visible. You see, at the beginning, we were doing this particular fiesta in just one location but again we have been able to increase it to five locations, eight days, 40 concerts and you can imagine everything surrounding it in terms of employment, job opportunities for food hawkers, artisans and above all, the security that has kept the city very safe.

“So, we are very excited that this is part of the GDP that we are growing for Lagos and I know that this will be continued by the next government. I am satisfied that we made a promise that we were going to use tourism, entertainment , arts and sports to promote excellence in Lagos and almost four years after, people can see that we have fulfilled it and Lagos is the only destination for people in December, he said.’’

Besides, Ambode also seized the occasion to urge Lagosians to go all out and vote enmasse for President Muhammadu Buhari in the February 16 presidential election and also for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the March 2 election.

According to him, victory for both and all other candidates of the party would continue the positive economic trajectory the country and the State in particular has witnessed since 2015.

“It is the best interest of all of us to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari and we assure the President that we would deliver Lagos for him come 2019.

“In Lagos, we must continue with the plan that has worked and vote Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the next governor of Lagos State,” he said.

The 2018 OLF with the theme, ‘A December To Remember’, continued in its fine tradition of holding simultaneously in five locations including Agege, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe just as it attracted thousands of participants and millions of viewers across the world.

The highlight of the grand finale at the Eko Atlantic City venue was the spectacular display of fireworks and the raffle draw which saw Mr. Ayodeji Omoboye, a resident in Ikorodu emerge winner of a brand new car from GAC Motors, while other residents went home with consolation prizes.

  • Nigeria’s first steel, concrete building ready soon

A Building construction firm, ITB Nigeria Limited, has said it is set to complete its first steel and concrete building project, the Azuri Peninsula, in the Eko Atlantic City, Lagos State.

The Azuri Peninsula project, which began in early 2015, is a unique steel and concrete residential building project, consisting three sets of over 30 floors.

Steel and concrete structures involve a mix of steel and concrete to form a single element. The advantage of using this technology gives rise to benefits like speed, performance and value. Additionally, concrete encasement protects the steel from buckling, corrosion and fire. The building offers a collection of four-bedroom luxury and super luxury apartments; two and four-bedroom town houses, known as ‘Marina,’ as well as six-bedroom penthouses.

ITB Nigeria Quality Assurance / Quality Control Co-ordinator,  Emmanuel Adeyemi, expressed satisfaction with the project, which he said is the very first of such by his firm. For him, the project is a testimony to the quality of work being undertaken by the firm “We are excited about this project because it’s our first composite structure created by a combination of steel and concrete to form a single element. This helps to deliver performance that is more effective than when individual components are used together but not unified,” he said.

He added that the firm is fully focused on understanding its clients needs and delivering on its promises, regardless of the scale or complexity of the challenge at hand.

Adeyemi explained that the uniqueness of composite structures is that it enhances construction time, performance and value. This is because steel framing for a structure can be erected quickly and the pre-fabricated steel floor decks can be put in place immediately. When cured, he further revealed, the concrete provides additional stiffness to the structure, making the structure one that can stand the test of time.

ITB Nigeria is the major building civil engineering contracting firm handling some of the infrastructural projects being carried out in Eko Atlantic city.

According to him, the projects, upon completion, would transform water transportation and thereby contribute to the vision of the present administration to reduce pressure on road infrastructure.

The jetties under construction, according to Adejare, include VIP Chalet, Badagry; Apa Waterfront, Baiyeku Waterfront, Offin Waterfront, Isalu-Ajido, Badagry; Liado Waterfront, Amuwo-Odofin; Ilashe-Ojo Waterfront, Ito Omu Waterfront, Epe; and Takwa By Island.

He said, “The jetties which are at various stages of completion ranging from 90 per cent to six per cent, essentially involves the construction of modern concrete jetties with shelter and shoreline protection across the riverine areas of the State.

“The work done and on-going include construction of reinforced concrete jetty supported by 24 number of concrete piles, hydraulic sand filling to be paved using 60mm paving stone, chrome handrail with canopy over the jetty, fenced waiting area, street light, waiting shelter with concrete seats, toilets for male and female, soak-away, among others.”

On channelisation of four new ferry routes, Adejare said the project was conceived to improve water transportation, adding that it would be completed with new world-class comfortable ferries already ordered to be procured by the

  • I’m grateful to those investing in Nigeria – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday expressed appreciation to foreign and local investors that agreed to commit their investment into Nigeria, aimed at boosting the country’s economy.

Buhari, who unveiled a plaque to commemorate his visit to the Eko Atlantic City project, expressed his appreciation to investors after being shown round the project by Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State.

He said that their investment had helped to provide employment for Nigerians, reducing the rate of unemployment in the country.

“I am extremely grateful to those that agreed to invest so much in our country.

“I have just gone round to see the Eko Atlantic City. I am extremely impressed with the potentiality of this project and the amount of jobs and its effect on the economy and what it is capable of bringing,’’ Buhari said.

The President, while expressing his satisfaction with the ocean reclamation embarked upon by the state government and its partners, said that the investment had impacted on the country’s economy.

Earlier, Ambode said that the project was an example of what the private sector could do to the nation’s economy.

Ambode, who said the project was initiated by the Bola Tinubu administration, noted that it had actually saved the whole of Victoria Island from potential danger.

He said that the project, which would spread over 750 square kilometres, upon completion, would eventually be bigger than Victoria Island.

In an interview with newsmen, Tinubu, who accompanied the President on the tour, described the Eko Atlantic City project as a solution to a potentially dangerous liability.

According to Tinubu, the ocean surge at the Ahmadu Bello end could have wiped out the whole of Lagos Island.

He, however, advised the Federal Government to replicate the project on the nation’s coastline.

The inspection marked the end of Buhari’s two-day visit to the state.

2nd Lagos Marathon: Renowned long distance coach hints Nigerians

With less than six days to the 2ndAccess Bank Lagos City Marathon, Stephen Nuhu, a renowned long distance coach, has advised Nigerian athletes for the 42km race to run cautiously.

Nuhu told newsmen on Monday in Lagos that Nigerian athletes should be tactical by running at their own pace.

“My advice to Nigerian athletes participating in the marathon is for them to run cautiously, I mention cautiously because they will want to keep pace with the East Africans.

“If they have been training seriously before the marathon, they do not need to overstretch themselves, stick to your planned pace.

“You don’t have to keep a fast pace like the East Africans from the beginning, starting too fast will burn a lot of your stored energy early in the race.

“And your legs will feel fatigued much sooner, there is no need to run the race like someone that wants to commit suicide because of the money involved,’’ he said.

Nuhu, who is based in Jos, Plateau, one of the best terrains for long distance training, said he was optimistic that a new national record would be achieved at the race.

“Nigerian athletes are getting closer to the international standard, so, I believe and hope that there will be a new national record,’’ he said.

He also said that he would be featuring no fewer than 20 athletes.

He expressed the hope that the likes of Philip Sharabutu, who came first among the Nigerian runners at the maiden edition in 2016 with 2:30:51, Eliya Pam’s time of 2:31:41 and Peter Maham’s time of 2:39:07 would better their times.

NAN reports that the race would be timed using the “Time Tronics Electronic Timing System and Chips/Tags will be attached to the race bib.

The starting point is the National Stadium, Surulere, opposite Teslim Balogun Stadium, while the finish point will be in front of Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.

The race is scheduled for February 11.
