  • Eko Hotels goes eco-friendly in business

Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos this week made history by becoming the first hospitality outfit in the country to consciously and officially migrate its activities in such a  way that would reduce the carbon foot print of the hotel  and reduce the greenhouse effect of carbon emission to the environment.

The hotel officially launched its environmental friendly mode of operation through the Eco Friendly Arts competition that was held for children from primary and secondary schools within the hotel’s council area.

Prior to the arts competition, the  hotel  had, in a release, said the   board and management made  a corporate decision  to  officially  embark  on  an  eco-friendly way  of  life due its concern  about  its immediate environment and the global community.

It said: “Eko Hotels is determined to make considerable investment in  ensuring  a  more  eco-friendly  culture  is  embedded  into  the  daily  operation  of  its business. To this extent, they accept they have a responsibility not just to their shareholders, but also to their host  community,  future  generations and  the  larger  society,  so they are  committed  to ensuring that their environment is preserved and properly catered to, promoting a healthier, safer and more sustainable business space.”

Speaking on the new initiative and new way of doing business, the hotel’s chairman, Mr. Christopher Chagoury,  said: “We are far more than just a global and local leader, we are the equivalent of a community that hosts over 500,000 clients each year, providing them with water, energy, food and a hospitable environment.  With ‘eco’ right in our DNA, the board of directors decided it was time to expose our guests to a more caring and greener lifestyle.

“We want to share the opportunity to experience what a greener, more wonderful world could be. You are invited to ride with us on the green side as we join hands to contribute our quota in preserving planet earth.”

To achieve this, the hotel said it is  leading the  change  towards  an  eco-friendly  hotel and   are  championing  the  eco –friendly  drive  with  keen  interest. They have reduced energy consumption significantly, several water conservation practices have  been adopted gradually, utensils and amenities  are  being  replaced  with biodegradable options and  hundreds  of children are being sensitized on the need to reduce our carbon footprint.

“Living green is to pro-actively participate in keeping our environment clean and sustainable for future generations. It is a serious issue; one that will inform the way we see things in every facet of life. Keying into this system of improving our environment is a lifetime and a lifestyle vow to be borne by all regardless of age, creed or social status.

“We at Eko Hotels and Suites firmly believe there is a growing need to drive interest in environmental conversation and bring to the fore its impact on tourism and destination travel, and the benefits that other global brands have thus far enjoyed,” it said.

The arts competition’s grand finale which was held on the premises of the hotel, 10 shortlisted students who scaled through the preliminary stage, compete for the coveted prize of a trophy, a certificate and a cash prize of N500,000.

It is not only for the season, but also for posterity sake  that Eko Hotels and Suites seeks a greener Nigeria, through a greener hospitality business. We see a great opportunity in this green thinking and seek to aggressively build capacity in all areas that would surely lead to the personal welfare of guests, their families, friends and the broader society.

“We, however, cannot achieve this project alone, as it is a long term and team oriented campaign. We must use this gathering to solicit support from the media, business partners and  the state government in actualizing this.

“The foundation  for today’s event began early in 2018 when our management and staff sought better ways to conduct ourselves businesswise and with less adverse impact to our immediate environment.

“After excessive researches, consultations and collaborations, we arrived at a blueprint which will not only see our business safe on cost but will significantly reduce our greenhouse foot print. Stimulated by these findings, the Eko Hotels eco-friendly project was initiated with two objectives: information and sensitization. In the form of information, I like to inform, that as at January 1, 2019, Eko Hotels and Suites, as far as we know, became the first hospitality outfit, to effect behavioural change, by organizing eco-friendly trainings for staff, offering practical tips and advices on green practices both at home and at work. “

  • Ambode calls for private sector participation to boost water transportation

    To ease traffic congestion

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has expressed his administration’s commitment to provide critical infrastructure and enabling environment for investors and the private sector to participate in the ongoing efforts to boost water transportation in the state.

Ambode made the promise at a Roundtable on Water Transportation organised by the State Government under the auspices of the ministry of transportation which held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island on Friday.

The governor said he wants the private sector to own the state economy because that is the only way to grow the Gross Domestic Product, GDP of the state.

Critical stakeholders/strategic partners who were part of the Roundtable include: United Passengers Waterways Association; University of Lagos; The Good Beverage Recycling Alliance; United States Mission in Nigeria, Trade and Investment Department of British High Commission, South Africa government, Paramount Maritime Holdings of South Africa etc.

Ambode said though the water transportation sector had been left unattended to over the years it, however, remains critical to solving the traffic congestion problem affecting the State.

Adding that the State Government was now committed more than before to fully harness the potentials of the water transportation to the benefit of the people and economic prosperity of the State.

The chaotic traffic situation in some parts of the State in recent times and the pressure on the road with attendant danger to lives and property according to him made the need to forge ahead with the reforms in the water sector being championed by his administration even more compelling.

According to him, “The question to ask is what has brought us to this despicable situation so to speak where the only mode of transportation for over 22million people is road and the road itself is chaotic. In the last three years, we have been fighting traffic and unfortunately in the last two weeks, we have seen what has happened in Apapa and what we have been trying to do. Just about three weeks ago, we saw what happened with regards to the Otedola Bridge disaster and then the carnage, as well as the inability of government to provide for the needs of the people.

“So, among the over 22 million people, almost 8 million are walking on the streets every second and at the same time, 86 people enter into Lagos every one hour according to United Nations statistics for 2016 which is the largest in the world. So, if other states are failing, more people are going to be coming to Lagos and that means maybe right now, there are 120 people entering Lagos not wanting to go back and the only mode of transportation we have for them is just the road and that is why we are coming up with other modes.

“1/5th of Lagos is water. We have the smallest geographical space of 3,577 square kilometers in Nigeria with 25 per cent of that being water. So, you are asking yourself that why in the history of Lagos and in the history of Nigeria, that we did not just think of other modes of transportation and what really went wrong?”

While reeling the benefits of water transportation especially to traffic management, the Governor said it was instructive to note that being surrounded by water, many parts of the State could be connected within few minutes.

“I was in Apapa and I look at the gridlock and it made sense to me that it is just five minutes ride between Apapa and Marina and so the question is can’t we create barges that take our cars officially and then push them there in just five minutes and so in no time everybody is in their offices instead of going through the traffic?

“Between Badore and Ikorodu is just ten minutes. So, we lay off people on Ikorodu axis. This is something that has been waiting for a long time and I just think this is the right time for us to do it because those coming behind us will not forgive us if we don’t take advantage of all the things we need to do to develop water transportation,” the Governor said, adding that major channelization projects, shoreline protection and jetties, among others were currently being constructed as part of efforts to boost the sector.

He said in addition to efforts ongoing, the roundtable was basically to come up with sustainable framework to boost water transportation and encourage people to adopt it as alternative to other modes of transportation.

While wooing investors to take advantage of the reforms in the water sector, the Governor said it was instructive that in the last 36 months, more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) came into the State largely due to transparency and credibility to encourage investors, assuring that his administration would continually create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

Earlier, Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Ladi Lawanson said the essence of the roundtable was to evolve effective framework in partnership with the private sector and relevant stakeholders to play up water transportation in Lagos with the view to diverting a lot of pressure currently on the roads to water.

Also speaking, a major player in the sector, Mr Ganiyu Balogun, who is the Managing Director of Tarzan Ferry Services, commended Governor Ambode for his commitment to rev up water transportation and harness it’s potentials for the benefit of the people.

He said stakeholders were aware of the challenges in the sector and were willing to partner with the State Government to address the issues in the overall benefit of the State.

There were also presentations at the event by University of Lagos, United States Mission in Nigeria, Trade and Investment Department of British High Commission and Paramount Maritime Holdings of South Africa, all expressing readiness to partner with the State Government to boost water transportation.

Meanwhile, the State Government at the roundtable also sealed a major partnership with a consortium of multi-national companies, Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance, to rid the waterways and water bodies in the State of filth with specific focus on plastic waste.

The agreement will also bring about the setting up of a world class collection and recycling framework for plastic waste in Lagos State.

The consortium including Nigeria Bottling Company, Coca-Cola, 7-Up Bottling Company, Nestle and Nigerian Breweries, among others, will be investing in boats with capacity to collect waste from the waterways, thereby protecting the ecosystem and boosting water transportation.

  • Ambode to Buhari: Lagos truly deserves a special status

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday evening urged President Muhammadu Buhari to seriously consider the possibility of granting Lagos a Special Status to enable it sustain its position as the driver of the nation’s economic growth.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at a State Dinner in honour of President Buhari at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, as part of activities to commemorate his two-day official visit to the State, expressed concerns that 26 years after the Federal Capital was relocated from Lagos to Abuja, the State has been left to strive for development without much Federal support.

The Governor said that despite the strategic position the State plays in the nation’s economy, there was still much untapped potentials and opportunities for economic, social and cultural growth in the State, which he said his administration was doing its best to explore by strategically focusing on improving the ease of doing business, entertainment, sports and tourism.

He, however, said that for these potentials to be realised, the State requires Federal Support, adding that several attempts by some eminent personalities to push for a Special Status for Lagos as well as a bill seeking to accord the State same was turned down by the Senate.

“Mr. President, it has become glaring that Lagos State cannot achieve this alone. Mr. President, 26 years after the Federal Capital was relocated from Lagos to Abuja, the State has been left without much Federal support.

“Your Excellency, despite all these, Lagos State needs more and Lagosians deserve more. Eminent Nigerians have called on the Federal Government to grant our State a Special Status. I recall that a bill seeking to accord it a Special Status has been rejected three times in the Senate. Lagos deserves a Special Status if we want the State to continue to serve as the major driver of the nation’s economy,” Governor Ambode said.

Thanking President Buhari for magnanimously yielding the State’s request to reconstruct the Oshodi International Airport Road into a 10-lane world-class road and transform the Presidential Lodge Marina into a monument and cultural legacy, Governor Ambode also seized the occasion to request the President to cede the ownership and management of the National Stadium, Surulere and the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu to the State Government to enable it revive them for the benefit of all.

“Mr. President your word has been your bond as far as your promises to Lagos State are concerned. You approved the reconstruction of the Oshodi to Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road into a 10-lane world-class road that will be ready by the end of this year. You gladly released for our kind use, your Presidential Lodge in Marina because you believe in our vision to transform the lodge into a monument and cultural legacy as part of the Onikan-Marina cultural and architectural regeneration.

“In addition, as part of our drive to use entertainment and sports to drive tourism and economic growth, we again ask of Your Excellency to consider ceding the ownership and management of the National Stadium Surulere and the National Arts Theatre Iganmu to Lagos State. These two edifices have been left to decay and our government is in the best position to revive these assets and make them viable again for the benefit of all Nigerians.

“This is not too much to ask but we are reassured that our President is a listening father who understands the yearnings of Lagosians. We are confident that he would listen and respond positively to the demands of about one-eighth of the nation’s population resident in Lagos,” Governor Ambode said.

Speaking on Friday after conducting President Buhari round the Eko Atlantic City (EAC) which is a multi-billion dollar project expected to accommodate over 150,000 people who would reside there and another 250,000 who would work and commute within the city on a daily basis, Governor Ambode said the project was a practical example of how the private sector could partner with government to boost the economy.

He recalled that the project, which was conceived and initiated during the tenure of former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was a brilliant engineering display which had saved the whole of Victoria Island from ocean surge and other threats.

“This project has actually saved the whole of Victoria Island and is standing on over 750 square kilometres bigger than Victoria Island itself when it is eventually completed. This is just an example of what the private sector can really do to the Nigerian economy and that is why we have made it possible that Mr President should take a practical tour of how we can really move the Nigerian economy when we partner with the private sector,” Governor Ambode said.

Responding, President Buhari commended the initiators of the EAC, saying he was extremely impressed with the potentials of the project, which according to him, would create jobs and boost Nigeria’s economy.

“I have just gone round to see the Eko Atlantic City. I’m impressed with the potentiality of this project and the amount of jobs and positive effect which this project is capable of having on the economy.

“I’m really grateful for those who agreed to invest so much in our country to get a secured area for operations capable of handling big businesses and investments throughout Africa,” the President said.
