    JUST IN: Ekong ruled out of Guinea-Bissau clash

    Super Eagles defender, William Troost-Ekong, has been ruled out of the clash against Guinea-Bissau today.

    The Nation learnt that Troost-Ekong is down with a hamstring injury and was seen with an iced pack to the knee area of his right leg.

    Last Thursday, the 30-year-old POAK defender scored the winner for the Super Eagles against host country Côte d’Ivoire and suffered an injury.

    Before the start of the tournament, the Eagles lost the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi, Victor Boniface, Umar Sadiq, and Wilfred Ndidi to injuries.

    However, a win today against Guinea-Bissau will seal the round of 16 qualification for the Super Eagles.

    AFCON 2023: Victory against Cote d’Ivoire was a morale booster, says Ekong

    Super Eagles stand-in captain, William Troost-Ekong, has said the win over Cote d’Ivoire in the Africa Cup of Nations was a morale booster to the team ahead of their next games.

    Troost-Ekong’s second-half goal was all Nigeria needed to seal the victory and earned them three valuable points against the Elephants in a tense encounter at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara on Thursday.

    In a chat with the Nationsport, the PAOK Salonique defender commended his players’ exceptional performance following their resounding 1-0 triumph over Cote d’Ivoire.

    He stated further that he and his teammates were determined to beat Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday and heaped praises on coach Jose Peseiro for the team’s tactics.  

    “The victory will take us to the next game. It was good to get the points. We wanted to win the first game and we wanted to win today. I think today was a great team performance. We created so many opportunities in the match and I think we have to give credit to the coach because his tactics worked for us,” Troost-Ekong told Nationsport.
