CDS: Ekpa’s arrest greatly reduced tension in Southeast

The arrest of Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa in Finland has greatly reduced the tension in the Southeast, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa said yesterday.

This development, he said, alongside the Operation Udoka by the Defence Headquarters, is restoring peace in the region.

Operation Udoka was established to flush   banditry and end the sit-at-home situation in the Southeast. Gen. Musa said they were working with the people to ensure stability in the region.

He said this when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Defence to defend the 2025 budget.

Musa said: “With the arrest of Simon Ekpa, it has greatly reduced the tension. Also, with Operation Udoka, we’re also doing that, picking up most of the leadership that are there, taking them out, and then making sure that the place is peaceful.

“The sit-at-home on Mondays is gradually diminishing. We’re also working with the political leaders there because we understand, like I said always, we need to have the local support because without it, it’s difficult. You know, the terrain is very challenging, so we need to work together. It is improving.”

Gen.Musa said the last holiday period was very peaceful because they were very proactive. He said they were committed to non-kinetic measures of addressing the security problem and this was yielding positive results.

His words: “We had some intelligence and worked ahead to ensure that everywhere was kept peaceful. That has happened and we intend to do that and continue to do more. What we try to encourage is synergy in our operations.

“And like we always appeal to Nigerians to understand, they have to take ownership of their armed forces, they have to take ownership of the security challenges we are facing. It’s not the challenge for the armed forces alone or security agencies; it’s everybody’s responsibility to do.

“We’re happy that we’re beginning to get that support from everywhere. Human intelligence information is coming, it’s flowing quite very well and we are taking adequate action and that’s why we see things are improving.

“What we have done is that we have established and enhanced the kinetic efforts for the three services for our operations. We have the Delta Safe, which is in the Southsouth for oil theft and militancy. At least for the first time now, we have been able to reach our Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) oil quota for Nigeria and we intend to do more.

“Our target is to hit 2.2 million barrels a day for Nigeria. It’s not something that we can also do alone. We also need the other stakeholders in the oil industry to also play their own role. We are doing more, providing more security. We are close to two million barrels per day. We intend to do more. This year, we want to intensify our operations.”

The CDS said security agencies have formed groups that are discussing with the locals. And they have found that that discussion has helped a lot.

Chairman of House Committee on Defence,  Babajimi Benson, said as representatives of the people, it is their duty to ensure that every Naira is judiciously spent to strengthen the operational capacity of the armed forces and deliver tangible results.

He said this year’s budget defence is particularly significant as it comes against the backdrop of evolving global and domestic security threats.

Benson stated that these recent developments highlight the need for heightened vigilance and inter-agency collaboration.

Finnish Govt releases two of Ekpa’s accomplices

The Government of Finland has released two of the suspects arrested alongside Simon Ekpa for alleged subversive activities, The Nation learnt yesterday.

Ekpa was arrested on November 21, last year, along with four others for alleged terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and terrorism financing in Nigeria.

He was subsequently sent to prison by the district court of Päijät-Häme on the allegations of “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media”.

The five men have been in prison since November 2024.

Though The Nation could not ascertain the names of the two released suspects or why they were left off the hook, government sources confirmed to our correspondent that the two accomplices had been released.

The sources, who refused to divulge more information on the issue, said Ekpa remained in custody.

This is coming on the heels of the announcement by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, that Nigeria had requested for Ekpa’s extradition.

“The Federal Government has actually forwarded most of the requirements to the Finnish Government. So, I’m sure the right thing will be done.”

The Nation’s investigation revealed that the Finnish Government was working with its Nigerian counterpart to end the violent activities of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the Southeast.

    • Enugu welcomes arrest, offers to provide evidence of his atrocities during trial

The Federal Government yesterday said yesterday that it was monitoring the legal proceedings concerning Mr. Simon Njoku Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish citizen and prominent leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ekpa is a prominent member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the secessionist group led by detained Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

He is also the leader of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militant arm of IPOB.

Ekpa and four others were arrested in Finland by the country’s Central Criminal Police early in the week, following which the District Court of Paijat-Hame, Finland, ordered his imprisonment “with probable cause on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent”.

He was believed to be the brains behind the sit-at-home order that has been forcing a shut-down of business activities in the Southeast states on Mondays.

The four other suspects arrested with him were reportedly accused of financing terrorism.

A statement issued by the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, yesterday confirmed the arrest and detention of Ekpa, who is wanted in Nigeria for terrorism.

Ekpa was reportedly charged by the Finnish authorities with inciting terrorism and promoting violence in Nigeria.

They accused Ekpa of using social media platforms to spread separatist propaganda, incite violence and encourage illegal actions, which had caused significant disruptions in the Southeast. Finnish investigators had also linked him to incidents of violence in Nigeria, which were believed to have been fueled by his online activities.

Ekpa’s arrest, the statement said, followed sustained diplomatic pressure by the Nigerian government on Finland to take action against his activities, which were linked to violence and instability in the Southeast.

The request for action, Ebienfa further stated, featured during high level engagements between the two countries.

The state reads in part: “The arrest of Mr. Simon Njoku Ekpa follows sustained diplomatic pressure by the Nigerian government on Finland to take action against his activities, which were linked to violence and instability in the South-East of Nigeria.

“The request for action featured during high level engagements between countries.

“The Ministry wishes to affirm that the arrest of Mr. Simon Ekpa is a significant development in addressing the activities of IPOB, and also neutralising the influence of transnational actors and their impact on our national security.

“The Ministry will continue to monitor the legal proceedings and provide further updates as the case progresses.”

Enugu hails arrest, says gov’t ready to provide evidence against secessionist

The Enugu State Government yesterday commended the government of the Republic of Finland for the arrest of Ekpa and his gang members, describing him as a common criminal, a con man and a terrorist, who has no interest of Igbo people at heart.

The government also described Ekpa as a murderer and fraudster who delights in killing his people and living large off their misery, saying that Enugu State was ready and willing to provide evidence of Ekpa-sponsored atrocities against Ndigbo to aid his trial and conviction, whether in Finland or Nigeria.

The foregoing was contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

The statement reads: “The Enugu State Government welcomes the arrest of the Finland-based terrorist, Simon Ekpa.

“His arrest and trial will no doubt go a long way in strengthening peace, security and stability in all parts of the South East.

“This arrest is in line with the demand of Governor Peter Mbah administration, which has repeatedly made it known that Ekpa is a megalomaniac, common criminal, murderer and fraudster, who takes joy in feeding fat on the manipulated emotions of Ndigbo and inflicting misery on the South East region.

“Ekpa has for long, and unfortunately from Finland, made a living by creating a siege climate and mentality in the South East, destroying lives, property, and the Igbo trademark of entrepreneurship and hard work.

“He thrives on manipulating, exploiting and extorting the people on the pretext of fighting for their interest and for the restoration of Biafra,” the government said.

IPOB has also disowned the embattled separatist, saying that it has no relationship with him.
