    New SU leaders take oath

    Students’ unionism has finally resumed in EKSU after about four years of lull.

    The newly-elected Students Union Central Executive Council (CEC) took the oath of office in a colourful ceremony held at the Oodua auditorium of the institution.

    The ceremony had in attendance management, academic and non-teaching staff as well as students.

    The EKSU SU president, Victor Babatope Ibitola, said he was poised to provide responsible leadership, as well as champion student-management relationship that will involve dialogue, maturity and responsiveness.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aina, said his administration believes in a duly-elected Students Union that will work closely with management to achieve her vision of becoming a 21st Century world class university.

    Fed Govt gives Ekiti varsity N2.1b

    Federal Government has offered Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, N2.1 billion as revitalisation fund this year.

    Vice Chancellor Prof. Oladipo Aina spoke yesterday at a news conference on the week-long convocation.

    He said: “This is besides the N664 million released to the university as Tertiary Education Trust Fund last year.”

    Prof. Aina said the money was spent on the building of the Biochemistry laboratory of the College of Health Sciences and the new faculties of Agriculture and Arts.”

    The vice chancellor assured that efforts were on to ensure that the university became residential.

    He said: “Although the money for this has not been accessed, I assure you that we will use it to build hostels. We want our students to have the culture of university education, which they cannot get outside the campus.”

    Lamenting the poor standard of facilities in most tertiary institutions, Prof. Aina said there was need for the universities to be creative to ensure they generated income internally to augment their monthly subventions from the governments.

    He said 5,859 graduates would receive degrees.

    The vice chancellor said there had been substantial progress in infrastructure in the last few years, adding that the university had produced about 55,000 alumni in the last 32 years.

    Said he: “They are not only our alumni, some of them are doing well in their chosen careers. The enabling peace and new lease of life on campus is most noticeable and gratifying with the restructuring of the university’s security department.

    “This year’s convocation is scheduled for between March 24 and 29. We expect it to be hitch free, given the arrangements and strategies in place.”

    Ekiti varsity inaugurates Advancement Centre Board

    Ekiti State University (EKSU) has inaugurated a 25-member Board of the Advancement Centre to oversee the development in and of the institution.

    The inauguration which witnessed the attendance of Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Akinjide Osuntokun, had in attendance Prince Julius Adeluyi-Adelusi who chairs the new Board.

    Other members of the Board included the Institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Aina, Prof. Pat Utomi of the Lagos Business School, Sir Remi Omotoso, the notable industrialist, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), and Mrs. folios Olaniyan.

    The Board was expected to garner supports from various organisations and individuals from within the country and outside for the development of the Institution.

    Inaugurating the Board at the Institution, Prof. Osuntokun disclosed he knew almost every member of the board either directly or through his relationship with some other individuals, expressing assurances that the team would support the dreams of higher attainments for the Institution.

    Prince Adeluyi commended the Authorities of the Institution for believing in the members as having the clout to rally needed resources critical to much needed development of the school.

    Adeluyi said: “We congratulate the University for identifying, inviting and assembling into this Board, distinguished and tested persons of character, accomplishment and capacity.

    The EKSU Advancement Board Chair clarified that Havard University in the United States equally had a humble beginning at its foundation in 1636, adding “it’s story changed in 1638 when its first benefactor, John Havard, after whom the University was named, willed his entire library of 400 books and half of his estate to the Institution. Today, Havard is globally known for its enduring history and innovation in education.

    He maintained that the occasion was not meant only to lament current predicament regarding unattained heights but to also commend the subsisting attainments of by past and present Management of the Institution, adding “There is no doubt that great strides have been recorded to put the Ekiti State University on firm footing in order to enhance its reputation and quality”.

    Said he: “With the full cooperation of the leadership of the University, may we together be enabled to extend the profile of the University to a global first class contain of education.

    “We have set a tall order for ourselves. But then, most of the members of the Board are sufficiently tall in resources and physique.nGod helping us, we should be able to deliver on our mandate”, Adeluyi said.

    Lamenting that a large chunk of its (at least two thirds) Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) was expended on personnel emoluments and infrastructural development, Prof. Aina, said less was routinely being left “to effectively run the system”.

    Said he: “The result of this excruciating resource constraint is that expansion and appropriate maintenance of facilities could not be provided to respond to the intense pressure that a growing student population and contemporary global realities have called for”.

  • Why we dropped fraud case against ex-VC, by Ekiti varsity

    The management of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has explained why the N91.5 million fraud charge levelled against the institution’s former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dipo Kolawole, and two others was dropped.

    It said contrary to media reports that the case was struck out by the judge, the institution opted for an out-of-court settlement after the money was refunded.

    In a statement yesterday by its Deputy Registrar (Information), Ajibade Olubunmi, the university thanked Governor Kayode Fayemi for his support during the over 30-month investigation to recover the money and for accepting the institution’s appeal to discontinue the suit.

    The university said it was only interested in recovering the money, adding: “The university authorities feel compelled to make this clarification for the sake of the public, the university community and our students that the suit was not dismissed by the Magistrate’s Court as reported. Instead, the university opted for an out-of-court settlement after the missing money was fully recovered from the culprits.”

    The statement quoted the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Oladipo Aina, as saying that the money would be used wisely to develop the institution. Aina thanked the government and other stakeholders for their support in the on-going transformation of the university.

    EKSU VC Aina praises Fayemi

    The Vice-Chancellor, Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Prof Patrick Oladipo Aina, has reassured stakeholders that the institution will continue to strive to rank among the best universities.

    He spoke while reviewing his administration’s activities in the last two years.

    Aina said the institution has recorded tremendous accomplishments, which were made possible through the support of the workers and the commitment of the Visitor to the university, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who he said provided adequate funds.

    The VC said Fayemi was the first governor to give a capital grant of N300 million to the varsity, beside increasing its monthly subvention.

    He added that the government supported the varsity’s autonomy, which he led to a congenial working environment and completion of the Medical Library, medical students’ hostel, and the Biochemistry and Pharmacology buildings.

    Aina further said for the first time, the university recorded full accreditation of all courses presented to the National Universities Commission (NUC) while it was rated 19th on the webometric ranking of Nigerian universities and 198th in Africa.

    The VC described as unprecedented, the recent achievement of the students of EKSU Faculty of Law, who were the best performing students at the last year’s Final Bar Part Two examination of the Nigerian Law School.

    The EKSU candidates recorded 95.1 per cent pass, which was the best among graduates of 35 universities who took the examination.

    He said a five-year strategic plan was under way to build a vibrant academic culture, which includes collaborating with renowned institutions around the world.

    “The university has also repackaged its linkage programmes with top universities, including Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil; University of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa; Texas Southern University Houston, Texas, United States, University Wollongong, Australia and University of Nottingham, United Kingdom,” he said.

    The VC said his administration has also invested in international training for members of staff.

    He described the co-operation of his principal officers as unique and commended the workers for their loyalty.

    He also said that new programmes have been introduced to enhance EKSU’s global competitiveness. These include Theatre and Media Arts, Architecture, Peace and Conflict Studies, Gender and Development and Forensic Science in collaboration with Gujarat Forensic Sciences University, India.

    On physical infrastructure, the university will soon take delivery of structures for the School of Postgraduate Studies, Entrepreneurship Centre, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Faculty of Education.

    “A public private arrangement has been concluded with private investors for the construction of Campus Students hostels and Staff residential buildings,” the Vice-Chancellor added.

     

  • Varsity receives C of C Bureau

    EKSU has been commended for adhering strictly to the provisions of the law of Nigeria with respect to the codes of conduct of pubic officers.

    The newly appointed Ekiti State Director of the Code of Conduct Bureau, Akinfolarin Feyisola, said this during a visit to the vc.

    Feyisola, who led the management team of the bureau, said as an alumnus of the university, he was proud returning to his alma mater, which has greatly improved in terms of academic ranking and infrastructural growth.

    The vc was happy that Feyisola and three of his management team are alumni of EKSU.

    He expressed his readiness to support the bureau in its proposed workshop to educate EKSU staff on the procedure to fill the Code of Conduct Bureau Assets Declaration forms.

    The vc described as a welcome development the responsibility of the Bureau to monitor the lifestyle of public officers to ensure discipline, modesty and eradicate corruption and questionable lifestyle.

     

  • Killing of EKSU student: Family demands Coroner’s Inquest

    The family of a student of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Mr. Seyi Fasere, is requesting a Coroner’s Inquest to ascertain what caused the student’s death.

    It said this in a letter dated July 30th, issued on its behalf by Mr. Durodola Olabode, a lawyer, of the Philip Olu Ojo Chambers.

    According to the letter copied to Governor Kayode Fayemi, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Wale Fapohunda and the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, the Chairman of Oye Local Government has 30 days to institute the inquest lest he would face a legal action.

    In the letter titled: ‘Demand for Justice’, the family said it decided to “demand the true cause of Seyi’s death to remove the doubt in some quarters that he was a member of an armed gang that robbed a bank” on the day.

    The letter said if the police could parade the deceased’s body around town, saying he was an armed robber after same had been denied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Fasere, “a Coroner must be brought in to clear Seyi’s name.”

    Fasere, a part-time Business Administration final- year student of EKSU, was believed to have been killed by the police in Oye-Ekiti after a bank robbery in the town on February 28.

    According to reports, Fasere, who had gone home for his tuition fees, was returning to campus with N100,000 meant for the payment of the fees when he died. It was said that none of the valuables on him at the time of the incident, including the money and mobile phones, was recovered.

    The petition reads: “Take notice that if your office will fail, neglect, refuse and or ignore to perform this statutory responsibility thrust on your local government within 30 clear days of your receipt of this letter, our clients will use all legal powers within their reach to enforce the extant laws as duly passed by the Ekiti State House of Assembly.”

    The letter hailed Governor Fayemi for his “zero tolerance for extra-judicial killings”, urging him to support the family in exposing the circumstances of Seyi’s death.

    The petition said a police officer attached to Oye-Ekiti Divisional Police Station told Seyi’s parents that their son was an armed robber, which they had denied.

  • EKSU donates equipment to BSES

    The Ekiti State University (EKSU) has donated digital satellite television equipment and accessories to the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES).

    The equipment were received by BSES Director-General, Sina Awelewa.

    Awelelwa, believed that the partnership between the BSES and EKSU would continue to improve.

    He praised the university’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Patrick Oladipo Aina, for his efforts to make EKSU a world-class university, as well as improving the frontiers of the institution in the area of partnership.

  • Varsity for Post-UTME screening

    Varsity for Post-UTME screening

    The Ekiti State University (EKSU) has set aside a week (from July 22 to 29), for the computer-based screening of candidates who have applied for admission into the institution.

    It has also made the screening open to the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) candidates who did not choose EKSU as first or second choice. However, all candidates must have scored 200 and above in the last UTME.

    Accordingly, candidates are to register online on the university website not later than midnight of Friday, July. Candidates are, however, warned against engaging in any form of examination fraud.
