Buhari, Ekweremadu, others meet on South East

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday met behind closed-doors with some Federal lawmakers from the South East at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The group, South East Caucus in the National Assembly, presented some of the concerns and challenges of the South East to the President.

Those in the delegation are the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Chairman of South East Caucus, Eyinnaya Abaribe, Sam Egwu, Hope Uzodinma, Andy Uba and Chukwuka Utazi.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, Ekweremadu said: “For us from the South East, we believe that dialogue is better than any other form of engagement. So we decided to visit the President and present to him some of the concerns of the South East including the issues of roads, general infrastructure – the rail and airports.

“We also discussed the issue of security with him and of course the issue of IPOB. We had a good conversation and he promised to look into the issues.”

Abaribe said the delegation also sought for more federal appointments, adding that the South East is shortchanged more than any other zone in the country.

He said: “This is the South East caucus in the Senate and we came to see the President because of the issues we have in the South East.

“We had a fruitful discussion with the President. He has promised us that he is going to look into the problems of South East.

“We know that there are problems everywhere but we also believe that the South East is the zone that is far much shortchanged at this time than other zones.

“We also talked about the issue of appointments from the South East, especially with respect to the National Security Council. The President also told us that governors of the South East have also engaged him on the same problems we engaged him on.

“There is a concerted effort from the people of the South East to be sure that we engage with this government meaningfully.”

Nigeria may emulate U.S direct party primaries, says Ekweremadu

Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu yesterday said the country may emulate the United States of America (USA) in the use of direct primaries to choose candidates of political parties.

Ekweremadu said the use of direct party primaries will strengthen the country’s electoral system.

A statement by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Deputy Senate President, Uche Anichukwu, said Ekweremadu dropped the hint in Abuja when he received, on behalf of the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, a delegation of the House Partnership for Democracy, United States House of Representatives, which was on a working visit to the Senate on Monday.

The statement said Ekweremadu noted that direct primaries by political parties had conferred enormous transparency and credibility on the American electoral system, while also ensuring that the people remained the true owners of the various political parties.

It said Ekweremadu further noted that it was a key ingredient of the U.S democracy that could be explored by Nigeria to improve its electoral system in the nearest future.

He observed that deep inter-parliamentary ties between both countries was imperative for closer bilateral relations and the growth of Nigeria’s democracy, which he said was inspired by that of the United States.

It said that the leader of the delegation and Chairman of the House Democracy Partnership, Representative Peter Roskam, who was also accompanied by the officials of National Democratic Institute (NDI), extolled Nigeria’s efforts at sustaining its democracy and pledged the support of his organisation towards strengthening it.

  • The Ekweremadu-Okorocha tiff

    The Ekweremadu-Okorocha tiff

Sir: When two elephants tango, it is ultimately the grass that suffers. This sage quip captures the fairly recent exchange of verbal volleys between two political behemoths of Igbo extraction, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, Governor of Imo State and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu (PDP, Enugu-West). Okorocha it was who fired the first salvo when during a ceremony to celebrate the victory of Ben Uwajumogu (APC, Imo North) who emerged victorious after the Imo North Senatorial re-run election, called out Ekweremadu for allegedly relocating to Imo State during the election to influence the outcome of same. Okorocha went as far as prognosticating that Ekweremadu’s days as Deputy Senate President were numbered as the election of Ajumogu was crystal clear hand writing on the wall. Not one to be outdone in the publicity sweepstakes, Ekweremadu fired back through his spokesman describing Okorocha as being on a wild goose chase and displaying a buffet of lies and deceit.

Given the diametric divergence in party affiliations and even political outlook and perspectives, it was only a matter of time before both political titans crossed swords but that it has come now is indeed a foreboding of the insidious divisions that might yet rankle Ndigbo in their quest for relevance under an increasingly inclement Nigeria political climate.

Okorocha has never been one to shirk confrontation and continues to divide opinions. While his legion of admirers continue to insist he has transformed Imo State during his five years in office and back him to go on to play bigger roles in the Nigerian political space after his stint in Imo, detractors and neutrals continue to insist he is all hot air, ostentation and false colours. Not that he cares. He continues to nail his colours to the mast.

As much and as stridently as the APC led federal government and President Muhammadu Buhari continue to insist that the federal character principle is upheld and political common weal is not skewed against any section of the country, Ndigbo continue to feel aggrieved and rightly so in spite of the soothing assurances of serving appointees from the region in the current Federal Government.

The sneaking mutual suspicion is not helped by the spectre of seeming secessionist tendencies symbolised by the Indigenous People of Biafra Movement (IPOB) and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu who is ostensibly nowhere close to leaving the DSS custody in spite of multiple court orders directing  same.

The recent public spat between the two political leviathans strikes a particularly sour note back home. Instead of going after each other’s jugulars in public, the interests of Ndigbo would be better served if efforts are sublimated into conscious steps aimed at uniting and promoting the interests of Ndigbo in particular and Nigeria as a whole. The distasteful operatic of distraction portend no good.

    Saraki/Ekweremadu: Reps hail govt’s action

Some members of the House of Representatives, under the aegis of the Consolidation Group, have called on the Presidency to promote a unity of purpose among the three arms and present an indivisible government through proper governance approach.

While reacting to the withdrawal of the forgery case against Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki and Senator Ike Ekweremadu by the Federal Government at the FCT High Court, the Consolidation Group, however, urged the government to extend the same measure to other cases capable of setting key government functionaries against each other.

The group, in a statement by its Convener, Zakari Mohammed, said it considered the withdrawal as a courageous move and a good sign that the federal Government is responding to popular opinions.

‘’We maintained our position and consistently stated that the forgery case was an infringement on the principle of separation of powers and clear interference by the executive on what is obviously an internal affair of the legislature.

‘’We believe the Standing Order of the Senate can only be declared forged or genuine by the Senate and by actions of the Eighth Senate; its members have no grouse about the 2015 Standing Order.

‘’The filing of the case has equally brought the judiciary to joining the fray with the executive to interfere with the work of the legislature. That is why we consider the withdrawal a bold step aimed at restoring constitutionalism and separation of powers.

‘’We commend the prosecution and the Federal Ministry of Justice for steering the government to do the right thing. At this point, what will give our people confidence and hope that government is serious about tackling the problems posed by recession is when we work as a team to proffer solutions.

•Says all is not well with Nigeria
•Asks FG, APC to hear and respond to Nigerians’ cries

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, yesterday threw his weight behind the withdrawal of the forgery charges against Senate President Bukola Saraki, and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.

He said the move was particularly welcome at what he called this crucial time when active and innovative governance is required to “bring the progressive change the APC vowed to the people of this nation.”

“New legislation will be required to help pull the nation out of the economic mire. More importantly, such visionary legislation will be even more needed to permanently reform our national economic architecture so that we may promote the type of diverse, durable economic growth and employment that will ensure a stronger future and better insulate the nation from the fragility inherent in basing the economic welfare of the nation on the global price of a single commodity,” Tinubu said in a statement in Lagos by his Media Office.

He added: “with these forgery charges found not to apply, it is good that they be dismissed so that the national assembly may focus on this important work ahead.

“While those involved may understandably feel a sense of relief or vindication, this is no time for them to celebrate or to believe all is well with the nation simply because all has turned out well for them on this matter.

“All is not well. Throughout the nation, the people stagger and groan under the weight of economic hardship. This government and our party must hear and respond to their plea. We must lead the way.

“A mind and heart unburdened by the specter of possible legal liability is also free to devote itself to the pressing matters of state. Consequently, this action presents a unique window of opportunity for the national assembly to reset its bearings and to focus on the real issues at hand.

“History will not look kindly on those involved if they were to squander this fine chance.

“As never before, Nigerians look to the various arms of government to perform their roles so that the country can walk the path of change and renewal.”

Tinubu asked Saraki and “those who are the beneficiaries of this legal outcome to now rededicate yourselves to fulfilling the progressive tenets of the APC and to honoring the promises we made to the people with regard to their governance and well being.

“Now that you have overcome this legal battle, you must dedicate yourselves to helping Nigeria win the greater war against poverty, despair and failure. No matter our past difference, in this effort we must stand united in purpose and resolve. Nigeria must do more than survive. It must thrive.”

    Saraki, Ekweremadu hail decision

    Senate President, Bukola
Saraki, and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, yesterday described their discharge by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on charges of forgery as a welcome development.

They also called it a vindication of their position from the beginning of the case that they are innocent of the accusations leveled against them.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, the duo said the court decision was consistent with their position that the case lacked any merit and that the charge of forgery of the Senate rule filed against them can never be substantiated by any fact.

The two men described the case as a ‘politically-induced distraction’ which came at a time when all hands ought to be on deck to solve the problem of economic recession biting the people, destroying homes and creating severe social disorientation in communities.

They, however, acknowledged that the federal government finally displayed courage and strength of character in halting the unnecessary waste of precious time of both parties by agreeing with the defence team that the case lacks merit and therefore should be discontinued.

They expressed appreciation to “all our colleagues in the Senate for their solid support and understanding while the case lasted. We also thank other parliamentarians in and out of the country and the international community as a whole for the consistent solidarity they displayed to us and their belief in our genuine cause since the commencement of the case”.

“We believe much time has been wasted in pursuing this needless case and we hope that the same treatment will be extended to other politically-motivated cases. It is also hoped that from now on, the various arms of government will be allowed to devote all the available time and resources to working on the problems confronting the country and finding solutions that will lead to higher standards of living for the majority of the people of Nigeria.

“At this point, what the country needs is a strong economy where a very large percentage of those who are willing to work can be productively engaged; where there is solid infrastructure, where the atmosphere brings the best out of the people and where all are able to realize their full potential. We pledge to work for Nigeria to achieve all these,” Saraki and Ekweremadu stated.

Forgery: Court discharges Saraki, Ekweremadu, others

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Jabi, Abuja has discharged the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and two others charged with forging the Senate Standing Orders 2011.

Others include a former Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa, and a former Deputy clerk, Ben Efeturi.

Justice Yusuf Halilu, in a ruling yesterday, accepted the application by lead prosecution lawyer, Aliyu Umar (SAN), for the withdrawal of the charge against the defendants in view a pending suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja on the same subject matter.

At the commencement of proceedings yesterday, Umar told the court that in view of the pending case at the Federal High Court, which Saraki and Ekweremadu also referred to in their applications, the prosecution was inclined to withdraw both the older charge and the amended one filed on October 5, 2016.

Umar said: “This government respects the rule of law and the hierarchy of the Judiciary. It is obvious from these two applications (filed by Saraki and Ekweremadu) and the similar case before your learned brother, Justice Kolawole, at the Federal High Court, who is dealing with the issue, that we are withdrawing the charges.

“It is trite that two matters of the same subject matter cannot be before different courts of coordinate jurisdiction. Therefore, the amended charge dated October 5, 2016 and also the original charge dated June 10, 2016 and filed the same date, be struck out and all the four defendants be discharged.”

Lawyers to the defendants – Paul Erokoro (SAN), Joseph Daudu (SAN),

Ikechukwu Ezechukwu (SAN) and Mahmud Magaji (SAN) – did not object to Umar’s application to withdraw the charge, following which Justice Halilu struck it out and discharged the defendants.

The judge praised the prosecution lawyer for bringing his wealth of experience to bear in his handling of the case, leading to the withdrawal of the charge.

Justice Halilu noted that it takes courage for somebody that is standing for government in a criminal matter to have counselled his client on the need to avoid abuse of judicial process. He noted that Umar has shown great courage.

“By this courage you have chosen the part of honour and good professionalism. As Nigerians, we have a duty especially the bar and bench to make this country better than we met it,” the judge said.

He also praised defence lawyers for their cooperation and the way they conducted themselves during proceedings.

Justice Halilu urged them not to feel witch-hunted, but to believe that the police have their duty to carryout investigation in any matter. He advised the police to always be guided by national interest in their duties.

The suit referred to by Umar, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/646/2015 was instituted on July 23 2015 by Gilbert Nnaji (representing Enugu East Senatorial district) to stop the police from proceeding with their investigation of the forgery allegation. He also sought to restrain the Attorney General of the Federation from taking any action on the investigation report produced by the police on the case. The suit had the IGP and AGF as defendants.

Nnaji alleged that the police’s investigation of the case “is inspired by a devious petition by the Secretary of the Unity Forum Senators, solely aimed at

Ugwuanyi, Ekweremadu charges Rangers for NPFL title

GOV. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has charged players of Enugu Rangers International Football club not to be complacent about its status as the potential Nigeria  Professional Football League champions, but tackle today’s final match against El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri with all seriousness and commitment to be able to win the game out rightly.

Gov. Ugwuanyi in a morale boosting message to the players said that the people of the state were expectant to see Rangers win the match and break the jinx of 32 years without a trophy.

The governor reminded the team of the significant of the trophy to the people of the state, saying that the God appointed time has come for the club to shine and rekindle the confidence of its fans as the pride of the East.

While wishing them goodluck in today’s match, Gov. Ugwuanyi prayed God to crown their efforts with a resounding victory as super champions .

Similarly, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has charged the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu to shun any form of complacence and go for the jugular of the El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri on the last day of their Nigeria Premier League, NPL, title campaign this season.

A statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, said that Ekweremadu stated this in his goodwill message to the Flying Antelopes of Enugu ahead of their season’s decider at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, today.

It said that Senator Ekweremadu said while the odds, no doubt, favoured Rangers, the team must go all out to achieve an emphatic victory and win the league on a high note.

He said: “I want to commend Rangers International for coming this far, ready to break what appears like a 32-year jinx despite the challenges. I urge the team to go all out to not only win the league title, but also to do so on a resounding note by drubbing the El Kanemi Warriors”.

  • Saraki, Ekweremadu, Mark seek prayers to end recession

Saraki, Ekweremadu, Mark seek prayers to end recession

Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and former Senate President, David Mark yesterday sought joint efforts to bail out the country from economic recession.

This was contained in their separate goodwill messages to mark the country’s 56th Independence anniversary.

Saraki specifically called on Nigerians from all walks of life to collaborate with the Federal Government in order to ensure the nation emerged from the current economic recession stronger, more united, developed and self-reliant.

The Senate President, in his message signed by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu, also commended all Nigerians, especially the nation’s founding fathers, for their contributions that have averted disaster from the nation at every point her existence is threatened by social, political and economic problems.

While expressing regrets that in her 56 years of existence Nigeria’s economy still depends on only oil, a situation which created the present economic problems being experienced by the citizenry, Saraki commended Nigerians for their perseverance, understanding and support in the face of the harsh economic condition.

He said: “As we celebrate independence, we should all vow to work together as we have done in the past to save the nation. As we expect leaders to initiate policies, programmes and projects that will propel the economy to grow rapidly and improve the standard of living of the people, our people should also seek to explore their creative talents to produce goods and services which can compete with the best in the world, thereby enhancing our ability to export massively and earn foreign exchange.

“That is why I continue to say that the responsibility to once again search for credible and lasting solutions to the economic crisis lies with all Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora.

The Senate President also called for prayers from individuals and faith-based organisations for the quick recovery of the economy as “we can only achieve our goals with the blessings of God upon our efforts.”

On his own, Ekweremadu “urges sober reflections, return to the path of founding fathers” the Deputy Senate President called for sober reflection and return to the path of true federalism as envisioned by the founding fathers in order to move the nation forward.

The Senator, who stressed the need for justice, peace, and unity, once more urged the Federal Government to mobilise all capable hands to salvage the nation’s ailing economy, as there was hunger in the land.

This is contained in a statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu.

He said: “This 56th Independence anniversary calls for sober reflection. No people can make progress unless they retrace their steps back to where the rain started beating them.

“Nigeria, at formation, had a building plan, which was based on true federalism as covenanted by our founding fathers at various conferences leading up to independence. For as long as we followed that plan, we prospered.

“But, once we discarded the building plan, dissembled the inherited structures and legacies and began to undermine the fabrics of equity, justice, balance, healthy competition and economic prosperity that was ingrained therein, we charted our route to the current perdition.”

Ekweremadu, however, assured that Nigeria would bounce back faster if immediate steps were taken to unite the country, getting the best hands on deck, irrespective of wherever they are found.

“I am afraid, true prosperity may continue to elude us as a nation unless we restore the basis of the union as agreed upon by the founding fathers, also taking into cognisance the experience of the last 56 years.

“There are no two ways about it, for what a people sow, that is exactly what they will reap”, he stressed.

Also, Mark in a statement entitled Nigeria @ 56: A Nation Destined for Greatness, expresses hope that recession will end if the right steps are taken.

A statement by his media Assistant, Paul Mumeh, said that the former Senate President took stock of Nigeria’s chequered economic and Socio-political history since independence and submitted that in spite of the bottlenecks, the nation is destined for greatness.

To achieve greatness however, Senator Mark canvassed for policy consistency saying that development in the country has been largely encumbered by inconsistencies in policy formulation and implementation.

Senator Mark also urged for love and unity of purpose among Nigerians irrespective of religious, political and ethnic affiliations, adding that such is the only way the nation can realise its full potential with all the abundant human and natural resources.
