  • Why PDP failed in 2015, by Ekwueme

Why PDP failed in 2015, by Ekwueme

Former Vice President Alex Ekwueme yesterday hinged the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 presidential election on lack of internal democracy.

Ekwueme, who spoke when he received members of the PDP Strategy Review Committee, who visited him to present a copy of their final report, identified impunity and imposition as some of the causes of the party’s downfall.

He advised committee to reconcile aggrieved PDP members, especially those who left for other parties.

He regretted that the vision on which the party was founded suddenly disappeared.

“With that vision, the party was able to control 28 out of the 36 states of the federation,” the former vice president said.

He promised the delegation that he would make a statement after studying the  report.

The leader of the delegation, Ambassador Aminu Wali, agreed there were cases of impunity that made PDP to lose the election to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

He added that his committee will review aspects of the party to determine areas where changes needed to be made.

Aminu, who addressed reporters at the end of the committee’s meeting with the former vice president, wasoptimistic that the PDP would re-brand to go back to the visions of its founding fathers.

He said the party belongs to all Nigerians.

Aminu insisted that the PDP was already a mega party, whose presence was noticeable in every ward and village in Nigeria.

A member of the delegation and founder of DAAR Communications, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said PDP was meant for everybody.

He apologised to Nigerians on the areas in which they failed to meet their expectations, declaring that PDP was now a born again party poised to win the 2019 general election.

Dokpesi insisted there “is no faction in PDP. What we have are a few dissidents”.

He noted that the senators, governors “are with the caretaker committee-led by Ahmed Makarfi”.

The delegation included former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dubem Onyia and former Aviation Minister Fidelia Njeze.

    Ekwueme rallies Ndigbo

Former Vice President Dr. Alex Ekwueme was the rallying figure as the Igbo in Anambra State pondered cohesion in the ethnic group, reports NWANOSIKE ONU

Individual effort or success is not enough; if the Igbo hope to expand their stake and relevance in the country and assert more influence, they must come together and speak with one voice.

That was the rallying cry of former vice president Dr. Alex Ekwueme as he spoke before a large gathering of Igbo political leaders and business executives in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Self-pity is not an option, neither is putting the blame on someone else, Ndigbo were told.

The state governor Chief Willie Obiano also spoke in the same vein, as did a governorship hopeful Godwin Ezeemo.

No fewer than 57 traders described as most diligent in the 57 major markets in the state were honoured at the event, which was held at the Triple Tree Hotels in Amaokpala.

It attracted other eminent sons and daughters of the state including Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, a one-time governorship candidate.

It was organised by Anambra Consensus Project with Dr. Emeka Eze as its president. It was tagged the Southern Conference Traders Summit.

Dr. Ekwueme narrated how Ndigbo used to live and help one another in the olden days, when, according to him, there was unity among the people. He lamented that such unity had gone in Igbo land, adding that without such cohesion, Ndigbo would continue to wallow in self-pity.

He said the current economic recession in the country was caused by Nigerian’s dependence on importation.

Ekwueme said, “Ndigbo should come together as one for their voice to be heard, our people should unite and we have to be our brother’s keeper, otherwise we will remain where we are today.”

The state governor Willie Obiano, represented by secretary to the state government (SSG) Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, said Ndigbo should speak with one voice to get their fair share of the national cake. He said there must be a linkage between trade and industrialisation, adding that his administration would always partner with traders to move the state forward.

Also, speaking, the leader of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) in Anambra State, an entrepreneur, Sir Godwin Ezeemo, said what Ndigbo needed was sincerity among themselves.

Ezeemo who aligned himself with Ekwueme and Obiano’s speeches, said without such, the much touted unity would continue to elude Southeast.

The president of Anambra Consensus Project (ACP), Dr. Emeka Eze, said the 57 best practicing traders of the year would enjoy privileges courtesy of the group.

He said the (ACP) was committed to promoting Igbo ideology, oneness of Ndigbo and a united direction of Igbo growth and development, the reason, according to him that brought Ekwueme, Obiano, Ezeemo together among others.

He said, “It is of awesome note that out of the 57 major markets in the state, the smallest of them harnesses a daily turnover of N15 million, while the largest, erupts with an average of 260 million naira daily turnover”

Former governorship candidate of the United People’s Party (UPP) in the state, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, said nobody could pin Ndigbo down in the society.

He believed that the failure of the unity of Ndigbo was made possible by their leaders, adding that the leaders must show the way for others to follow.

One of the representatives of the awardees from cattle market in Awka-Etiti, Chief Felix O.M Okpalakunne, commended the organisers for finding them worthy of the awards.

Also, Ekwueme, Obiano, Ezeemo among others commended Anambra Consensus project for such an idea, adding that such groups could bring Ndigbo together again in the South East.

Furthermore the leaders said such a thing should be taken to our brothers and sisters in Delta, Rivers, Abia, Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi for Ndigbo to come together to pursue their goal.

The event featured 57 best traders and commercial entrepreneurs in the 57 major markets in the state.

Dr Ekwueme narrated how Ndigbo used to help one another, when, according to him, there was unity among the people.

The former vice-president noted that without such help, unity would continue to elude the people.

He said the current recession was caused by Nigeria’s dependence on importation than exportation.

Ekwueme said: “Ndigbo should come together as one for their voice to be heard. Our people should unite, and we have to be our brother’s keepers. Otherwise, we will remain where we are today.”

Obiano, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, said Ndigbo should speak with one voice to get their fair share of the national cake.

He said there must be a linkage between trade and industrialisation, adding that his administration would always work with traders to develop the state.

Ezeemo said Ndigbo needed sincerity in their inter-relationships.

The politiocian, who aligned with Ekwueme’s and Obiano’s positions, noted that unity would continue to elude Southeast, if the people failed to speak in one voice.

President of Anambra Consensus Project (ACP) Dr. Emeka Eze said the 57 Best Traders of the Year would enjoy some privileges from the group.

He said: “It is of awesome to note that out of the 57 major markets in the state, the smallest of them harnesses a daily turnover of N15 million. The largest erupts with an average of N260 million daily turnover.”

Ekwueme, others hail IGP on community policing

Former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnamemeka Achebe, yesterday hailed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for establishing community policing across the country.

The frontline Anambra sons spoke yesterday at the inauguration of the state’s Eminent Persons Forum (EPM), which has the right to arrest suspected criminals in any part of the state.

The trio hailed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris for establishing community policing.

They noted that it would help to flush out criminality from the society.

The event, which took place at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre in Awka, the state capital, was attended by traditional rulers, presidents-general of 177 communities in Anambra State, among others.

Inaugurating the forum, Governor Obiano, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke, was assisted by Police Commissioner Sam Okaula.

Addressing reporters after the inauguration, Dr Ekwueme noted that with the arrangement, many communities would be safe from criminality.

The former vice president said though the state had been crime-free, the establishment of the EPM would further boost security.

He said: “With the people of communities, the work of the police will no longer be cumbersome. As such, bad eggs in any community will be fished out. This is a laudable programme in our society.

“This time, it’s being configured in such a way that work of crime prevention is not being left alone for the police. It has been a long muted idea.”

Igwe Achebe urged the divisional police officers (DPOs) to tighten security in their areas, adding that the number of rapes was alarming in some communities.

The monarch, who was represented by the Ajie of Onitsha, Chief B. O. Adibua, said community policing could solve security challenges across the country.

He said the programme had been experimented before without success, adding that the time had come to help states and Federal governments to tackle security challenges in the land.

Okaula praised Obiano for what he called his passionate commitment to security, safety, law and order and for providing the platform for security agencies in the state.

The police chief described Anambra as the safest state in the country, adding that with the inauguration of the forum, the state would continue to witness peace and for its development.

He said: “May I use this opportunity to make a clarion call to all and remind you that crime and criminality thrive only where good people decide to keep mute.

“Crime will continue to soar to high heavens where the public continues to see the police as its enemy. Criminals would continue to rape justice with impunity if you refuse to pass useful information to the police.” Okaula said.

Obiano said the security of lives and property was key to development of any state or country.

He said community policing was a process that must continue, adding that his administration was ready to work with the police and other security agencies to make Anambra a safer place for its residents.
